Story:
Rain thundered down, dripping into my small bed. I sat up to look around wearily. I was a pretty pink and blue color. Mama had always been gold and green. We used to get water by the pond, or go for a swim. We had had such fun! But.. then it happened. And it wasn't ever the same again.
""Come on!" I barked, racing down to dab at the water in happiness. Mama followed more slowly, looking up at the domb above our heads. "Honey... our time is coming soon.... C-ren wont want us in here forever... and you are almost of age..." I glanced back in surprise. "The legend story's of Ren? Where we are only allowed to live here till she decides to get us a family? There true?" Mama came over and licked me, but then we heard something. The unmistakable crunch...crunch of human boots. The most dangerous thing here was the ones who cared for us...
I had always heard them when they led out a EBW or whatnot. But nee this close. Mama started running, nudging me up, and we took off. Thump! Thump! My heart started to beat fast as we ran over stretches of land, back to the safety of our burrow. But then, Mama disapeared. I skidded to a stop, and looked up, afraid of what I would see. Mama was being pulled away in a net! And three more humans were after me! I started toward mama, but she looked back, and called to me. "I will be fine! Run!" I meowed unhappily, and took off again, our hole getting better. But then I heard the dreaded sound. swish! A Net! It hit me on my back, almost getting me, but thrust me forward, and I fell headfirst into the hole, wailing.
I must have blacked out, because I woke up with moonlight on me. The humans were gone. I stayed in the hole for days after that, eating bugs and what I could find. Water dripped from the opening until finally, three weeks later, I got out. I moved away from that hole... they could find me again. So I raced into the forest. But then I stopped. And looked back. The pond... no. I had to leave. I ran into a bush, and started digging another burrow.
As months passed, I was still small. But I learned to survive. I learned... and thrived. I often could here humans about, but I avoided them now. They could not catch me awake. One night, I went to sleep worried. Humans had been after me all day. I had suspicions they wanted me. So, tired and drenched from the steam in the forest, I went to sleep. I was so tired I didn't wake up when the humans .Finally. Caught. Me.
So here I woke up, in a wet dog bed. Humans came, trying to adopt me. Soon, I would be gone too. But I was treated well, and liked Ren actually. I just wished I was back home, with mama. Before all this.
