Username: rivendell
Kirin's name: Darius
"He that informs himself"
Gender: Male
Height: 13.0hh
Age: Ten years
Notes: Rare mutation
Personality: This lovely male certainly takes his name seriously, as any sort of knowledge to him is sacred. He goes to great lengths to inform himself on any matter, even if it has happened decades ago. In stark contrast to his brother, who he loves dearly, Darius is somewhat shy and reserved, but also a troublemaker who adores pulling pranks. He's very intelligent, and sometimes has to say his sentances in a more relaxed manner so that he doesn't seem like a little nerd who can be pushed over easily. Even though Darius is on the quieter side, he does like to be around females more than males, he feels that they're much more gentle and seem to understand him better. This doesn't mean he tries to flirt with them though, that's all up to his brother. Instead, Darius just likes to talk to them, and listen. A connection like that makes him popular with the ladies, but more like their dearest friend instead of just another male trying to impress them. Strangly enough, Darius doesn't worry about impressing anyone, he doesn't believe in that sort of thing, and thinks that those who do are foolish and will get themselves killed.
Story: The day dawned bright and cold, but everyone else was asleep, too mindless to notice the beautiful dawn. Mist curling down into the land, light flashing off it, turning the silver into a brilliant shade of gold.
"Nothing gold can stay," murmured a strange creature by the name of Darius, quoting a famous poem that he had heard in his quest to find knowledge. He sighed serenly and turned away from the picture-like scene, dissapointment written all over his endearing face. A familiar voice sounded behind him, and Darius frowned, knowing his brother, Gabriel, had come to lecture him. This put him into a sour mood, Darius didn't appreciate his brother's words all too much.
"It is beautiful, isn't it, little brother?" Gabriel said in his gentle voice, so much like Darius' that if it wasn't for their coloration they'd be almost impossable to tell apart. In response, Darius snorted, a sound so harsh it seemed to disturb the very earth beneath his hooves. "Why don't you want to talk to me? Is something wrong?"
"Go away," Darius growled at his older, much more cheerful, brother. "I don't want you bothering me. Go off and flirt with the females somewhere. Shoo!" Gabriel laughed, and after a few more moments, Darius heard his footsteps become quieter and quieter until they faded away entirely. Finally, a bit of peace! He thought, flinging himself down onto the ground in an exasperated manner. The earth was dying and all his brother and the rest of the herd wanted to do was sleep in! What a curse it was to be born into a race who couldn't know, who couldn't feel the world like he could! So young and so misunderstood.
"I feel your pain," a sudden noise brought Darius back into the present with an uncomfortable jolt of his heart. It was a massive wolf who had spoken, his grin seemed malevolent in nature, and his tone the same. Scrambling to his feet, the wolf laughed harshly, and Darius' spine stiffened. He had heard that laugh before.
"Y-y-you!" He gasped, trying to circle around so that he faced the small cliff, his back to the lush forests, ready to make a swift escape.
"Oh, yes. It's me, Darius. Your little 'imaginary friend.' Didn't you miss me? You don't seem happy to see me again, do you," It wasn't a question, and as he spoke, the wolf lept forwards to cut off the Kirin's exit.
"Mal, I don't need you here! Leave me alone!" Darius bellowed, fear and anger creating a painful knot in his chest. "I trusted you, and then you went on to kill my parents. Just leave me and my brother alone!" On the last word his voice cracked, and choking sobs racked his body.
"Me oh my, I had forgotten about that brother of yours. He doesn't remember me, does he? I should go pay him a visit," And with that, Mal turned on his heels and bounded away into the forest. Darius stood for a moment before screaming and racing after the wolf. They went through the woods, Mal in the lead, cackling sourly.
As they burst into the midst of the other Kirins, Mal whipped around and flung himself at Darius, who was powerless under the wolf's surprise attack and superior size. His feet slipped out from under him, the world came rushing up to meet him, and then it all went black.
....... holllaaa ...... holllaaa ..... holllaaa .... holllaaa ... holllaaa .. holllaaa .
When Daruis woke again, it was strangly quiet. Fearing he had gone deft, the young male scrambled to his feet, but was reassured when he heard his hooves scrambling against the earth. Quiet, yes, but still there. He looked around, and took in the fact that Mal hadn't hurt him besides knocking him down, and then it hit him. There wasn't a Kirin to be seen. Heart pounding in his throat, Darius called out his brother's name, softly.
"Gabriel?" No answer. "I'm serious, Gabriel, this isn't funny!" Again, no reply. Instead, a small, fur-covered creature with a large, bushy tail and soft chocolate eyes looked at him with curiousity. She had an obviously fatal wound in her side, Darius could see one of her rib bones. Lowering his muzzle, Darius sniffed its little head, and the creature took the opportunity to scramble up his face to rest among his horns. "We're all alone, aren't we, little miss?" She twitched her tail, he felt it against the fur along his neck. Darius bit his lip, and then turned around to climb back up through the forest to the cliff, hoping he was right.
He was. At the edge stood Mal, looking down with an evil smile.
"So, come to get me, have you?" He asked, taking Darius aback. How did the demon know? The wolf laughed and turned around to face him, grin still plastered on his face.
"Yes, I have. What did you do to my herd?"
"Oh, but I haven't done anything to them. The better question would be, what have I done to you?" Another dry, wheezing cackle flew from Mal's throat.
"What did you do to them!"
"Take a look for yourself!" Mal motioned to the cliff. Glaring at him cautiously, Darius peered over the edge and saw the rest of the herd gathered around a Kirin. It looked. . . like him. "Yes, the herd is mourning the loss of their 'little brother.'"
"You killed me! You piece of filth! When I'm done with you, there won't be enough of you to feed to a minnow!" Darius bellowed, turning around and charging at Mal, who sidestepped him easily and backed away to the cliff. The Kirin charged again, anger boiling inside his stomach. This time, he mananged to catch the wolf on one of his spines, right beneath his elbow. Mal screamed and twisted around, but it was too late. The three of them fell off the edge of the cliff, Mal's screaming becoming fainter and fainter. With a slam, Darius hit the earth. Instead of feeling every bone in his body break, he felt a warmpth invade instead. Gasping, he reared up, and several Kirins scattered away screaming about the living dead and such. The squirrel on his spines whispered in his ear,
"Well done, friend," and vanished.
The day dawned brightly, and as the light hit Darius' eyes, he grunted somewhat confused at where he was. Getting shakily to his feet, he took in his surroundings. He was on top of the cliff, the sun just beginning to rise. Gabriel walked in and said,
"Good morning, little brother. How are you?" Slightly taken aback, Darius asked his brother about the day before, to which Gabriel replied, "Why, nothing's happened! I mean, I think there's a new girl into me, but that's not super exciting to you, is it?"
Had it all been a dream?
"What about last night?"
"You can't remember?"
"If I did, do you think I'd be asking."
"No. You got angry at me because I'd hurt some female's feelings or something, and you've been up here ever since, unless you snuck down to do something."
"Oh, um. Okay. 'Bye, Gabriel."
"Where are you going?"
"To go down there and say goodmorning to everyone." Gabriel chuckled and followed his little brother, but just before they were in hearing range of the other Kirins asked,
"So, what's with the change of the heart? You're not usually so social."
"I don't know. I guess I've just taken your stupid advice to 'loosen up.'"
"Glad you did, but it doesn't matter unless you're hungry."
"Of course I'm hungry, stupid, I haven't had anything since yesterday."
"Great, then you can eat my dust! Last one there looses!" Gabriel screached, taking off. Darius laughed and sprinted to catch up, easily beating his brother with a more even stride, though Gabriel soon caught up. And from then on, they were even more aware of the word "brother's" meaning.
