Willford Scott Layman found himself flat on his back staring up at the sky. No not the sky, were he had expected to see the normal pale and cloudless expanse of blue, he saw the dancing outline of a portal. letting out a low moan, the Five foot seven blonde male brought one pale hand to his aching head. Portals were once a rarity in this, well in his world. shifting his weight into a forward sitting position, he took in his surroundings with twin orbs of ever shifting color.
It was a quiet enough place, beautiful, quaint, yet most of all it was so full of life. Life, yes life, the very thought of the word brought a broad smile to his face. This world, for it had to be another world, was so different from his own dead desert like home. His eyes turned a deep gleeful shade of blue as he turned his face up to the sky. It was just so, so Blue! With a giddy smile plain on his face he drank in the sight. He had never seen the sky before, his world was so enveloped in thick clouds of pollution and dust, he had herd about the grand expanse but never beheld the sight again. It was the most breathtaking moment of his young life. His glee was soured by a spasming cramping sensation from the joints in his legs as they reeled in retaliation as he slowly stood, causing him too wobble, for a second he was worried they would give out, and he would fall once again to the all to hard ground. It was true his body was used to taking a beating, from the day he was recreated in a lab, his bones ground away and replaced with hard ceramics, joints decimated and rebuilt as machines capable of taking on thousands upon thousands of miles in one stretch, he was resurrected in his current form by some of the greatest human scientists of all time. Yet even his body, in all its close to being artificial glory, had its limitations. This time though he was lucky, his joints held out as slowly he righted himself to a full standing position.
He let out a low groan as the world around him slowly faded, his eyes turning green as the screen to his internal interface, involuntarily replaced the lovely scene before him. Though he was not partial to ripping his eyes from the lively land, he knew it would not do for his body to give out wile in a world not his own. More over, it would be fatal for such a thing to happen when he was alone. A dull beep sounded in his right ear, bringing his mind back from the dark tangent it had raced away on. For someone who was designed to be an Operator, a CBO designed specifically for the control of or the working with a could blooded killer he sure was flighty. With an internal sigh he ran his 'eyes' over the multitude of binary that ran across the 'screen'. It was an internal diagnostic, the same one that he ran every night as he slept. It would bring to light any problems with his mechanics or the systems that worked inside him to keep him running.
Luckily for Wilford, he was for the most part OK. The artificial joints in his legs, though badly strained from the mad dash he and hi 'partners in crime' had only hours before, were for the most part alright. The all to familiar cold sensation started up from his legs, icy yet dreamy and comforting. It was his body's own morphine like component, something to soothe and heal the aches and pains the were sure to come alone with what he was, and what he dose. Reassured that he was, and would be fine, he allowed his interface screen to fade. Blinking his eyes furiously he was greeted by the face of a very large lion. No, not a lion, or at least he did not think it was a lion, this creature was much larger, and he had never seen a lion with horns, or one that sported the dark blood red fur that this one seemingly had.
It stared him down coolly through two green, gold framed, eyes. Though his world had been so drastically, and severely changed and mutated, since the fallout. Never once had anything so different crawled out of the putridity radioactive pits. And even if one thing had, he doubted it could have ever looks so, so noble. Though he was no normal lion, or what ever his species was, he seemed to fit here, in this odd blue skied world.
After a pause it opened hits jaws and did the one thing Will never expected it to do. it SPOKE!
"
Are you alright, human?"
Its voice was cool, yet the way its tone changed ever so slightly when it said human sent shivers down Will's spine. Still caught up in the wondrous glory of the thing, all he could manage was a simple nod in reply. The creature snorted at him then spoke once more,
"
Very well then, I suggest you get your act together. Though the Faerre may be small in size, they will not hesitate to cast you out if you prove to be uncouth."
Will was dumb founded, yet he managed a squeaky reply,
"
Faerre?"
He regretted the single word as soon as if left his lips, why did he have to make a buffoon of himself now? As if on cue a small blue head appeared above the great horned lion's. It's small face was twisted in a look of agonized boredom as it clawed the front half of it's body unto the others head.
"
Lokeash!"
Will was startled by the deepness of the small creatures voice.
"
I thought you said we were leaving Vinara. Why did you stop? I'm bored will all this needless chatter, I want to go NOW!"
The great lion threw his head back, forcing the small creature into the air. Will got the slightest glimpse of its small fox-like body before it once again disappeared. Sputtering the small creature once again clawed its way to the much larger lion's head. This time though it did not speak, letting out a low growl it buried its teeth into the larger creatures ear. With a yelp the large red beast jumped to the side shaking his head, unable to dislodge its smaller assailant he hoped forward a few paces before taking off at a loping gallop. Will watched them disappear into a growing crowd of humans and the much smaller fox like creatures, they seemed to be moving off in the same direction, and slowly he found his eyes shifting from the two rapidly disappearing to the line quickly forming nearby. He was so entranced by the commotion, that he did not see the portal above him open up once more. He did not hear the screaming yelps of the giant eyeless dog, or the gleeful euphoric screams of the girl clutching tightly to the mount of pink and brown fur. Well that is at least until they hit him.

Willford Came to once again on his back. Staring up at the blue sky, with an aching body. As his eyes cleared he glimpsed the pale face and dark eyes of this long time friend Cora. They say that once upon a merry day before the fallout, Cora was a beauty, they say that she was beloved, they say that that she was sought out by many. With her pale-fair skin and matching dark hair and eyes, that at least, was easy to see. Yet the things they did to her, the ways they changed her , she was not built nor designed by the same kind hands that had worked on rebuilding Will, No those who built Cora made her wild, drove her mad, they made her haggard, fierce, and gave her a temper to rival an ornery mother bear. Cora was a killer, a cold blooded killer, made for nothing else but infiltration and assassination, yet to him, she was everything. It was through his hand, and knowledge of rewiring CBO's that she had some control over what she was now a days, it was because of him that she was free. And through that knowledge they bonded more than any other CBOA and operator pair had ever been.
Still half dazed he shot her a cheesy grin,
"
Hey, there beautiful,"
he drawled sounding half intoxicated. Cora made no verbal response to this, instead she lifted a single expertly curved eyebrow in a look of minor disgust.
"
Your lucky"
She dully stated looking away from Will, out towards the growing crowd.
"
Portals are almost impossible to follow, The only reason we were able to find you was a concentrated collective effort of Blar, Zen and I"
Her tone stayed dull through the whole speech, yet in her eyes he glimpse some untold emotion. From his back, and with her facing away form him, he could not tell much about its origin and the small glimmer in those black globes soon died out. Shrugging it off, he once again shifted his weight forward. his limbs and muscles groaned in complaint to the motion and he found himself taking the time to stretch each one, making sure every thing checked out. He felt like he had been hit with a literal ton of bricks, and in all reality he had, Cora by herself would have been heavy but not enough so to making him feel this way even with gravity acting on her, but if his memory served him well, his tracker dog, Blar, had been the first to hit him. Blar by himself was large and heavy enough to take down a fully grown man or a small CBO on the ground, from the air, with Cora on his back, Blar would have hit him with the same force as a large ground car. Will was surprise, if not lucky, nothing on or in his body was broken.
After completing his quick manual diagnostic check, he looked around, The crowd was much larger by this time, and they seemed to be heading in the same direction, a few humans, and other odd creatures like none Will had ever seen were mixed him the group, a few were accompanied by the same small fox like creatures Will had seen with the large Lion like creature. Every now and then eyes would drift their way, true it most seem odd, two kids alone in a world they had never seen, one Blonde with eyes that shifted color every so often, and changed with his mood, wile the other, a lithe female with too black eyes and dark colorless hair. Yes they were quite the pair. Add to that the Overly large Pink and brown eye less tracker with a docked tail and ears, who seemed content to lay in the sun his brown stomach exposed to the world, and his tongue, short for his species, lulling out on the ground next to him.
"
Concentrated Collective, eh?"
Will spoke up, in an attempt to break the silence the had stretched on between the two CBOs.
"
Your even starting to sound like me, Cora"
His partner snorted in contempt
"
You wish, Willford"
Her tone was cold, as she snapped the last part of his name.
"
Ouch"
He mockingly replied, shooting a smile towards Cora that died on his lips as he saw the look of utter confusion on her face.
"
Where do you think they are going?"
She asked no one in particular,
"
Duno, I want to follow them though."
He said as he got up and stretched loudly.
"
Conforming to the system Will?"
Cora asked turning her black eyes up to him.
"
No, its just i want to explore this place, Vinara, seems so, well it just seems to full of life."
"
Vinara?"
"
Its this worlds Name, Cora."
"
You know its name already?"
"
Well, Yeah I learned it from a chance encounter with a very large Lion and a Faerre, well at least I think it was a Faerre."
The look Cora shot him was full of utter disbelief.
"
A fairy? Gee Will, you really did hit your head."
Slowly she stood and moved towards him, hands out stretched and grasping. Will Jumped backwards a few steps and continued.
"
No a Faerre, I'm only guessing, but i THINK they are those little fox things every were around here."
"
Little fox things, eh?"
Cora replied looking confused,
"
Really now? Don't tell me you haven't seen them, they are EVERYWHERE."
Will made a hand motion to emphasize the last word, which in consequence made Cora scowl and look around, Will followed her gaze. everywhere he expected to see someone or something, they would move, almost like they were... like they were.. scared of Cora...
"
Oh, wait, that right. The Predator Complex. Cora they are afraid of you."
A low snarling dog like growl echoed deep from within Cora, visibly shaking her small frame.
"
My life just keeps getting better and better you know?"
With a deep scowl Cora flopped Her body Back unto the ground, the force of her weight hitting the ground was enough so that a small cloud of dust rose into the air around her.
Will looked at Her with dark blue eyes filled with sadness. Not a day went by that he wished he could help her more than he already had, but there were such things a physical limits to what a person could do to another. With a heavy sigh, he took a few steps backward towards Blar, The tracker raised his eyeless head to bump his hand with a whine.
"
Well boy, You coming?"
~{ -------------------------------------------- }~
Will followed the Line of Humans and various creatures alike, for quite some time, Finally after what seemed like endless rows of shops and many sellers hawking their merchandise to both Blar and Will alike, they found themselves at a wooden structure that seemed to fit the same description as the great stone cathedrals of the long dead humans in Will's World. Even with his raptor like eye sight he could not make out all the expertly inlaid glyphs and scenes that seemed to endlessly cover the entire building.
In his wonderment he failed yet again to see something important, Zen, the small robotic and leather work dragon Will had built with his own two hands, Pulled his way out of the pocket Will had unceremoniously dropped him into after rescuing him from under Blar's girth. With an angered series of squeaking clicks the small animatron clawed his way up Will’s shirt and unto his shoulder. Clicking with glee the small animatron clenched at Wills shirt with steel framed claws as slowly, ever so slowly , they were jostled into the wide doors of the wooden Cathedral. It was dark, the only light in the large building was from torches set at increments of every few feet. Will stumbled forward a few paces before his eyes settings adjusted to the dim light. Blar, who Will had forgotten had accompanied him, let out a low wine. It was quiet here, too quiet, and it seemed to be having an effect on the large brown trackers sensory infrared. A concerned smile touching his lips he planted a reassuring hand on The Trackers neck he helped guide the large animal to a relatively vacated area.
It was there they sat, in the quiet darkness. Blar, slowly falling into the grasp of sleep wile Will's eyes darted over the many elegant designs within the building. He could not believe the many depictions, they ranged from small fox like creatures tilling land and raising crops, to the same fox like beings counting money and sitting among paper work. Another section showed two of the fox like creatures brandishing large swords locked in what seemed like a fiercely matched battle, and farther down the line a single Fox shimmering with ruby fire. Each was a stunning piece on its own, but as an overall whole they were a breath taking mural of the history of the small fox-like creatures. They had to be what the large lion was talking about, there was just no other creature he could be talking about, These small foxes had to be the Faerre and this, Vinara had to be their world.
With a satisfied grunt he sat back leaning his body against Blar's side. The tracker almost completely lost in sleep snorted and rolled causing Will to fall back unexpectedly with a yelp. Zen, angered by the sudden jog clicked angrily and jumped into the air, quickly taking flight. The combination of his light weight frame and the helium sacs within his frame work bolstered him quickly high above the crowds. It took Will a second to recollect himself, but as soon as he realized Zen had taken an unexpected flight he jumped to his feet with a yelp. Will had a hard time keeping up to his eye in the sky without the obstructions of warm soft human bodies, and small knee high animals that were easy to trip on. Will cursed his luck of falling through the portal without his trusty Hover board, and excruciatingly slow progress. He dodged person after person, and animal after animal, each time trying his best to keep Zen with in his sights.
Finally after what seemed to him like hours Will seemed to be making some head way. It seemed like Zen was circling, something, much like the extinct predatory hawks of old. For the time being Will was just thankful that for now something had caught his eye in the sky's attention long enough to stop him from going deeper into the throng of people. Finally he found his way to a small clearing in the mass of people, at a dead run he took off across the clearing, Zen was circling a small object just above him on a stage like area. Quickly he bounded up the stairs not entirely seeing those he stepped on to get up to the top as quickly as possible, his eyes were trained on one thing Zen.
As his foot connected with the highest step on the small stairway he bunched all his genetically enhanced muscles in this leg and vaulted his full weight into the air hand out stretched grasping at the robotic dragon. He must have looked pretty stupid as he sailed through the air, for time seemed to slow down as he watched Zen click at him in anger and flap its wings furiously in an attempt to get away.
"
No you don't!"
He shouted at the small animatron as his hand connected with the creatures tail, Will winched as Zen buried his claw like protrusion at the end of its tail into the palm of his hand in a last ditch effort to freedom. Then time seemed to once again take on its normal speed and gravity took hold of both Will and the Dragon, Will's weight dragging them both down despite the amount of helium within the small creature. Wills feet hit the ground with a thud, the force of the impact enough that he had to roll to defuse his remaining momentum. When he finally settled he found himself face to face with a beautiful sight.
"
Oh wow look at those circuits."
He commented more to himself. He reached out with his freehand to touch the board when he noticed something odd, It seemed to move up and down in an odd rhythmic pattern, and there were no light to indicate the circuit was even working. Oh wait no.. the circuit board was
breathing?
Will looked at te thing before him even closer,
Oh!
he exclaimed taking a few odd steps backwards, dragging the small angrily clicking dragon along with him.Blushing deeply he rose to his feed and looked down at the petite Faerre before him, for it was a faerre, not a beautifully crafted circuit board.
"
I'm sorry I mist took you for a circuit board, a very stunningly crafted on at that. I'm quite fond of your markings. Are those resistors i spy on your back?"
He turned an even deeper shade of russet at this question, and regretted it sincerely after stating it. quickly in a habitual motion he brought his hand, the very same one still clutching Zen's tail up to his head. He yelped in Pain as the Leather and metal dragon's hard polished steel beak clamped down hard onto his forearm. It hit the floor with a hard
Thunk, causing the anamatron to let out a serious of harsh and profane Clicks and whistles.
Oh! Gee Zen!Will Cried out as he quickly bent down to examine the dragon, It glared at him with glowing blue eyes, knocked slightly askew from its fall from glory. Cautiously Will held out his hand for the Dragon to climb onto. When all he got was a defiant puff of smoke from the dragon horns he commanded him to get on with a stern
"
Up, Now"
As if to emphasis this his eyes turned a stormy grey, the color sent shivers through the small creature and begrudgingly he made his way unto Its creators hand. Slowly Will's eye lost their stormy grey hardness, fading instead to a complacent blue, gently he set to work on Zen's body, flicking open his face plate, and re adjusting his eyes so they were even once again. Soon he was onto checking the small dragons body, for th most part he was fine, no serious dents or damage that would need serious repairs.
"
Your lucky, he told the small blue eyed creature, you didn't fall half as far as you did from my hover board that one time, could you imagine having a fall like that here? you'd be broken to bits with no magnets to catch your metal and slow your fall. "
The Dragon clicked in reply and affectionately nibbled on Will's closest finger. With a smile Will placed the dragon unto his shoulder, and once again looked around. He was startled to find himself still on the stage, in full view of all those around him, and holding up the very impatient group of those waiting to approach the young circuit Faerre. Turning an even more impressive shade of red, will all but yelled
"
Oh! I'm, I'm so sorry! I forgot were i was for a moment, Back in my home, well my world there is nothing quite like this place, there is no spectacular clamor of humans, animals, and mythical beasts for the attention of another. Forgive me please, I'm not familiar with these customs, But when Zen fell i HAD to make sure he was alright. His tec is so delicate that if one thing goes wrong he'd be messed up for a wile. Especially since none of my tools or even my hover board seemed to have come through that portal with Me.
Hum.. thinking about that how did you come through the portal Zen?"
He turned his head to the dragon, who let out a confused click in reply. Wills face fell into a confused mask,
"
well it cannot be COMPLETELY impervious to tec, I mean Cora and I came trough alright, and so did Blar, though he is more organic than the two of us."
the impatient cough of another suitor brought Will crashing back into reality,
"
Oh Crap! there i go again, off on a tangent. And for a CBOO I cant believe i'm so successful."
Blushing once more he ran his hand up the back of his head,
"
So um, yeah, your a great listener and all, I'd like to invite you to maybe come visit with me or something? It's the least i can do for holding up your.. your .. um event? With those markings you'd fit in great!"
With a slight wave he vaulted himself off the stage, into the general direction of were he had left the sleeping Blar, still not entirely sure What he had, interrupted.
