Gavin looked up at the sky, and shivered. He buried himself in the moss of his nest, his scales matching so well he was nearly invisible. He called out, a low trilling sound, that echoed across the valley where his nest was located. His mother had left to find food, and had promiced to be home by sunset. As the sky grew dimmer and dimmer, Gavin called again, ending in a tiny whimper. He was scared. His mother never broke her promices, and she should be home by now. He curled up deeper into the pile of moss, and stared blankly at teh bottom of the nest. His nest was located on a shelf on the side of a tall hill, overlooking a green valley with a blue river twining down the center. It was filled with moss, bird down, and a few pieces of cloth. His mother slept in the cave next to his shelf, because she was much too big to fit in his. He blinked back tears, and called again. The sorrowful cry echoed back to him, and he sniffed. What if she'd abandoned him? What if she never came back? A tear slid down his cheek, and he crawled out of his nest. He went to the edge of his shelf, his tiny claws scraping on the hard dirt floor. He stuck his snake-like head over the edge, and peered down at the valley with his keen red eyes. He could see the river, and the large black shapes of the mountain sheep that grazed there. But no matter where he looked, there was no sign of his mother. Suddenly he saw a shape on the horizon, and leaned foreward precariously over the edge of the shel, his tounge flicking out in excitement. He focused, and let out a cry of dissapointment. It wasn't his mother. Still curious despite that fact, he focused again to find out what it was. What he saw made him blink. The shape was a human. More exact, a whole bunch of humans. They were coming towards his valley on large skinny sheep with no horns, and were flashing like fish. Their shiny scales glinted in the sun, sending beams of light in all directions. He frowned. The only humans he had ever seen were the few travelers that came through the valley, and none of them ever looked like this. He frowned, and went back to his nest. As he tried to go to sleep, he wondered when his mother would come back. But another question kept him up. What were the humans doing here?
