Burning. Burning. That's all the little vixen felt. The fire that swirled from her opponent's muzzle twisted and turned around Shelby's body, dancing in the wind. SHe could hear Ayla, her voice growing fainter. The burning felt...good. And Shelby knew why. But she had to pretend. Pretend that it hurt. Pretend she had given in. SHelby forced herself to slump, to keep the flames at bay, not to absorb them. A Houndoom, dark grey pelt with skeletal bones lining down his back, growled with pleasure, pointed tail whipping with pleasure at his rival's defeat. He lifted his muzzle heavenward and howled. Howled to the dark sky that shrouded his pack. Smaller, shrill voices joined his, making an ear-splitting sound that made Shelby's ears ring. The flames were slowly disappearing, but Shelby made sure to absorb some. Flash Fire sure could come in handy, especially when your rival didn't know about it. The Vulpix, with six tails lowered and head hanging limply to the side, kept one eye barely open to watch their progress. Somewhere behind her, she could hear Ayla screeching for her, the little fox-like Pokemon thrashing about to escape her enemies' grasps. Ayla was growing fainter; she was being dragged away.
"Without this mutt in the way," The Houndoom sneered. "We can continue with our plan." She watched the Houndoom until he was out of sight, only to be replaced by two Houndour who picked up Shelby in their rough grips. The Vulpix forced herself to stay limp, instead of snapping back. She watched out of the corner of her eye, as they grew closer, as the Houndoom slowly stalked up to Ayla, staring down at the Eevee. Ayla's normally sleek, light brown fur was now singed and blackened with soot, but her face revealed something Shelby thought she would never see. Anger. Rage. Fury. Her friend was actually ready to kill. "You'll never get away with this!" Ayla growled, coughing slightly. She didn't let so much as a whimper out when the Houndoom slapped her, leaving scratch marks acrossed her cheek. "You're different than the little, timid Eevee I met back in Gemstone Village." The Houndoom said softly, a grim smile on his face. "You've grown stronger. Normally, Shelby would have to be by your side just to keep you courageous, yet here she is. Dead." He spat the last word in her face, making her shake with anger.
"I can handle you without Shelby." She snarled softly. "Just because she's dead doesn't mean she's gone forever." The Houndoom laughed at her comment. "Ah, but here is where you're wrong my little fox!" He said, prowling around her slowly. "You say that, but how can you be so sure? DO you see her spirit wandering around you? No! Here she is, limp in my lackies' jaws, and yet you believe she's still here? Hah!" The Houndoom was about to say something else when Carly growled, "Shelby may have been the source of my bravery, but that doesn't mean I lost it just because she's..." Carly stopped, choked up a little, but the defiant glow in her eyes wanted Shelby to yowl out in pleasure. Her friend had actually learned that you can be brave without someone or something.
The Houndoom's smile faded into a frown, his mouth twitching into the beginnings of a growl. "If you're so sure," He began slowly. "Then why don't you fight?" Carly's devilish grin made Shelby almost tense up, if it wasn't for her plan. Already, the start of a vicious Flamethrower was billowing inside her mouth. "To avenge Shelby? I'd gladly kill you." Carly stood up, shaking slightly, but still standing. The Houndoom didn't give her anytime to prepare her first move; the dog lunged at her, barreling into her andusing and Iron Tail. Ayla retaliated with a Crunch, and Shelby heard bone crack as the Houndoom's shoulder blade was split. He howled with pain, and bit down on Ayla's neck, gently, just to watch her die slowly. Ayla was slowly growing weaker. SHe was already feeble enough, especially because of their ambush before. It was now or never. With her six tails glowing, she smacked one Houndoom in the face, making him drop her back legs with a sharp yelp.. Shelby twisted her head around to scorch her other captor. This Houndour had Flash Fire as well, as she watched the fire become abosorb into it, but the Houndour dropped her in shock. Shelby darted to the Houndoom, and with a roar, somersaulted in the air to smack the skeletal dog's head with Iron Tail. The Houndoom let go of Ayla quickly, wheeling around to face Shelby. Ayla's eyes twinkled dully as she saw Shelby, standing tall with an ugly snarl on her muzzle. "How...How did my Fire Blast not kill you?!" The Houndoom roared, his eyes wide with shock. Shelby grinned at him before saying. "You forget that one of the fire dogs. And with every Fire attack, you hurl at me, just like you do,"-She blew out a snake of fire, swirling it up one of her legs and absorbing it-"I take it all in." The Houndoom's expression went form shock to anger. The two stood tall for a minute, the Houndoom over Ayla, Shelby growling loudly, preparing to attack. The two suddenly sprang at each other, ready to tear one another apart.
