A Novel in Progress
{ Please note: this is NOT the real, final-draft version, and it is currently untitled. }

Author's Note:

I know that many people hate sad and depressing books, which is okay. We each have our own opinions that we stand by, and I have my own as well. When I see a sad book, I do a mental (or not-so-mental) cheer, and grab it. I love to read sad books, as long as they haven't REALLY happened. Although, in my opinion, the biggest tragedy ever written was the 7th Harry Potter book (see if you can figure out why hint: I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan). So, obviously, my favorite genre to write in would have to be a fictuous (I don't even think that's a word) tragedy, which this book will be. I also would love lots of constructive criticism and critique.

Enjoy the book!

A dark shadow, visible only because it was of a denser darkness then the black emptiness surrounding it, glided through the pack of Unknowings, casting them aside with a dainty flick of it's wrist. The usually aggressive, fierce Unknowings skidded away, whimpering rather loudly. The shadow began to glide faster and faster, until it moved so quickly, the only way you could tell where it was was because of the terrifying pain that overcame you when you were in it's path. Suddenly, the thing stopped, and it was clear again, too clear. A hand with long, hooked nails and slender fingers reached back to pull of the hood of the creature that now stood before an unconscious little girl, perhaps only seven or eight. The face of the monster was horrifying.
The thing had eyes that were narrowed slits, evil, red cauldrons. A nose was still there, but it was tiny, so small you could hardly pick it out. And the mouth was nonexistent, all the creature had in it's place was a huge, gaping hole. The thing was completely black, no, darker, and had no hair at al. The face was covered in scars, criss-crossing all over the place and making the face seem like a battleground.
The monster bent beside the little girl and whispered, through his giant hole of a mouth, "She will do. Take her away, Marilbythe, now."

A tall Unknowing, thinner and more deprived than the rest, nodded hastily, bowed, and murmured, "Of course, my master." The creature took the girl into his bony arms and scuttled away, toward the forest, in which he found a man waiting beside a river.
"Sir, here she is," Marilbythe hissed.
The man, tall, dark, and handsome, looked up at the feeble thing. "Thank you," he said, gently retrieving the child and nestling her close to him.
"Hello, Luna. I can see you've already encountered some pretty crazy things, so let's get you home."

• • •

Now, before we continue there are some things you must know before we continue. Luna Devile was born into a loving, kind family, with a mother, father, and brother who all loved her immensely. Well, almost all. Luna's brother, Jack, hated her with everything he had. He was constantly trying to kill or hurt her, and one day he almost succeeded.
On April 16, 1987, Jack ended up killing the wrong person – I mean people. He had tried to kill his sister, and, not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, snuck a bomb into Luna's room before trying too run away. It ends up, Luna was at a sleepover, which Jack didn't know, and his parents were killed, as well as him being horrifically wounded in the explosion. He skin was black, now, and scars covered his body.
Now that he had found Luna, who had hid from him, he erased her memories and sent her away until she was old enough to resist when he tried to kill her, like raising a pig for slaughter.
