The crimson red trees lie in a scattered zigzag pattern around the town square. Their leaves shedding little by little as they fell off their branches and into the gutters and sewers below, Man hustled and bustled about ransacking shops for food and robbing banks for money. I guess this was probably how I saw the world for my Man was very different he was kinder than others and had a large heart. But his work prevented him from spending much time with me.
Life went on as usual and nothing out of the ordinary ever seemed to disrupt our daily life. Things went the same. We went to the store, got our daily milk, and then went home to begin our daily work. Mine usually consisted of napping and then hunting in the afternoons. But today I felt a strange shift in the air, a small feeling that tickled my brain and told me something was going to change.
As we arrived at our small flat in apartment 302 my Man let me out of the crate and made a strange gesturing with his hands to somehow shoo me from the staircase. I backed up a few feet not sure whether to trust the one who put food in my bowl, or the one who softened by bedding. But before I knew it my paws were skidding down the stairwell and I was thundering out of our apartment building, leaving my owner and my soft life behind me.
I found myself meandering outside on the hot asphalt of the streets. The sun beat down on me like a hot volcano about to erupt. The searing light of the day seemed to blind me to an extent but I pressed onward walking slowly but surely. My paws seemed to sizzle every time they pressed down on the hard earth. I was sweating buckets at this point and I almost felt helpless. My navigation sense seemed to be off today and the only thing I wanted now was shade. I opened my eyes wide staring around for a thick wooded area. Wherever there were trees there surely to follow was shade.
After travelling for another hour or so my nose was filled with the pleasant fresh scent of a forest not too far ahead. I exhaled a long relieved sigh as I padded forward. The temperature had gone down since noon but the heat was still unbearable. As I rounded a nearby corner the large green belts lie straight ahead of me. Thick fir trees dappled with maples surrounded the exterior of the woods. Inside it was probably a maze of zigzagged passages and I shouldn’t be expecting any suitable dens or hide outs. I trotted forward breaking out into a blinding sprint as I neared my forest area. Once inside my body began to cool down immediately the fresh winds blowing in from the north ruffled my pelt sending it flying backwards as I sat there. My golden eyes scanned the area once more. My usual white-socked paws were now a deep brown with…mud.
I continued on. Ignoring scents of prey and resisting the urge to look for water. My main priority was actually to find another cat. Someone who knew the ropes around here…someone who could lead me to a new and better town area, I was after all not a feral cat but a domesticated one. One that was used to being fed by Man. I raised my muzzle once more to scent the area and this time an unusual scent wafted from not far off. It was feint but it was the scent of a tom-cat.
I stepped forward no sooner did I hear the rustling of leaves of a small blackberry bush not too far away. I tensed my claws unsheathing and my fur standing up on end. I readied myself for an attacker, an opponent of any sort. To my surprise a rather scrawny tom-cat emerged from the bush.
His pelt was a light grey with large black stripes indicating that he was a tabby. His eyes were a piercing yellow and his tail was no longer than a twig off of a bush.
“Well hello there!” he mewed out his small tail twitching slightly at the sight of me.
I swallowed my fear and kept my head high my whiskers twitching only slightly in annoyance but this was what I had wished for. A perfect tour guide to a new town, shifting my paws I puffed out my chest and fluffed up my tail before speaking.
“Well hello to you too.” I replied with a hint of irritancy. What kind of fumbled feline was he? Showing up out of the middle of nowhere and acting kind and sophisticated? He sure was an odd one alright.
The tom seemed twitch for another moment before digging his claws into the damp earth. He was obviously nervous about something for his anxiety was apparent on his face. He wore an expression of pure secrecy he knew something I didn’t and I was determined to discover what. Without thinking I began to interrogate him asking him question after question about where I was and how I’d got there. Who he was and why he was here and he answered them with as much truth as he could muster but I could tell some on his answers were lies.
“The names Scarfy.” He began shuffling his paws every once in a while to reassure that he wasn’t going to fall off the hill we were on. He continued on after this and I soaked in every sentence he said.
“This place you’re in? It’s no place for rookies. You have to learn the ropes around here and if you don’t someone will surely catch you and pin you like a mouse. Well the name to Man for this place is New York City. The name for cats is Man Bid. Man Bid isn’t one to mess with. Human’s here are either rich with money or poor with only a few scraps to manage. Same with cats, you’re either top of the food chain or the prey that the larger ones feed off of. Me? Well I’m probably a prey. I don’t have much respect out here and you probably won’t either unless you mate with one of those beasts.”
Scarfy spoke with much emotion in his voice. Almost as if he was reading a drama movie script, I tried hard to focus on what he was saying but to no avail I learned little from it. Sure the place I was in was big and scary and you either found your place or you were an omega of the pack. Big deal it wasn’t the first city in which I had encountered that had similar rules to that.
Scarfy turned abruptly without warning and unsheathed his claws. From behind him a crazed rustling had started up once again in the bushes. I ducked down readying myself for an attack and possible bloodshed.
Jumping out of the bushes a large Bombay cat with tawny brown fur emerged. His deadly green eyes sent a swift gaze over both me and Scarfy. Stepping forward he let out an exasperated chuckle.
“Well well well!” he cackled staring down at the runty Scarfy. A flicker of amusement broke out into his gaze as he stared between the two of us. My mine was whirling with thoughts of all sorts but I kept them to myself. Scarfy on the other hand was infuriated with the prospect of meeting this tom and decided to challenge him a bit.
“Well Felix I thought I’d never see you again...” he insulted taking an angered swipe at the Bombay.
Felix leapt back avoiding the claws with a swift dodge. Cocking his head at the strangest angle he now looked to me and from the viewpoint I was standing at I could easily see a look of pure amusement in his eyes. Instead of keeping up the fight he swiftly pushed Scarfy away and strolled towards me. I took a cautious step back and tried hard not to show my fear but his eyes were soft and when his green eyes connected with my golden ones my throat tightened with embarrassment. I suddenly realized this cat was very handsome.
He had amazing green eyes possibly as green as emeralds and jet black fur. He had a slender figure with muscular legs and shoulders and as I looked into his eyes once more I felt a deep connection. Felix held my gaze for a while before looking away as if he was too afraid to look me in the eyes again. Scarfy who was still standing a few feet away rolled his eyes and rose to his paws once again. He continued on without me and for a while I thought he would leave but eventually he turned and flicked his short tail in irritancy to signal he was ready to move out.

I travelled beside Felix with Scarfy taking up the head. So far we had encountered no more cats than earlier today but I was not so sure that we wouldn’t run into any danger. We were far from any houses and I was beginning to wonder if we would ever return to any town of any sort but I remained silent and patient as I could muster. As we walked on I began to feel a sort of numb soreness in my paws and finally when I could take no more I begged them all to rest.
“Please can we just find a dang house and rest for the night?” I asked my golden eyes piercing into Scarfy’s yellow ones. Felix stopped immediately and smiled at me his strange crooked smile. Scarfy on the other hand stared back with a harder and sharper gaze.
“Oh please!” he moaned stepping forward to push aside Felix and stand next to me. “Of course we can rest! There’s a town only a few paw steps from here! We will be able to make it before sundown.” He seemed to be proud of this information and I simply let out a small smile onto my face before turning back to Felix.
“You alright with resting for the night?” I asked making sure the tom was feeling up to no longer making our trek south. The Bombay seemed to consider my question before smiling and nodding his head slowly. He kept silent but his emotions were apparent. He liked me. I felt sudden warmth spread from my whiskers to my paws as I gazed at him but soon Scarfy broke up our little connection.
“Let’s get a move on then!” he called out before turning swiftly and bounding down the hillside. I felt a sudden pang of sorrow for the poor tom for he obviously had token a bit of a liking to me himself but…oh well.
“After you Madame!” Felix meowed with playfulness. He hadn’t ever really played around before and for the first time in a while I let out an explosion of laughter. The two of us had really bonded quickly and I could also see it wasn’t getting us good attention from Scarfy. He still sat irritant on the hill his dark yellow eyes staring into my golden ones I could tell he didn’t like the way Felix treated me but there wasn’t much I could do about that.

Before I knew it the light of dawn was reflecting off my eyelids alerting me to my senses of daylight once again. We I opened my gold eyes I was greeted by a soft green pair of eyes that held the same level as mine. Felix was staring down at me his black pelt shimmering in the morning light without another word he moved closer to the entrance of our hideout. Scarfy was already gone hunting just as he said he would and a strange but yet familiar scent filled my nostrils.
Turning my head ever so slightly I caught the sight of a light grey Siamese she-cat, she had bright blue eyes with a soft pale face. She had a long striped tail with a black tip and even a familiar white splotch on her underbelly. This was Elezne my long lost sister.
Without warning I bounded out of the den flying past Felix and right over to Elezne were my sly sister sat with much contentment in her face. She wasn’t necessarily in the healthiest state for her ribs clearly stuck out of her sides and large bags hung down from under her eyes but none the less she was my sister and that was all that mattered.
