Prologue
“Racule!!”
Seara’s budding fears were planted as she arrived on the sight. He lay wounded in the dirt, a spear piercing his side. Blood flowed from the open wound, coating his already rusty coated fur. Breathing rapidly, he shifted his eyes. “Seara.” He croaked happily, trying to lift his head to look at his life-long mate.
“Racule, oh my… What did they do to you?” She whimpered, switching to wolf and laying down next to him. Surviving this was not an option anymore. Their pack was being quickly whipped from existence, and hiding among the humans was starting to show. Racule pinned his ears back against his head and closed his eyes. The gigantic brute sighed, flashing back to the moment. “Seara, you don’t need to know. All you need to do is get the pups to City 3.” He looked into her eyes as he spoke, undying determation locked. “Must I leave you now?” She said, laying her head across the scruffy neck of her mate.
“Yes. I am close to passing anyways. Seara, I love you. Never forget it.” He said. The spear shifted, and fell. It slid out of the brute’s side, the end snapping off. It glowed faint neon blue before returning to its regular, obsidian arrowhead, looking as it were dipped in blood. The blood of a wolf. Seara stared at it, considering something. “Racule, I love you too.” She gave him one last lick on the cheek before grabbing the end of the arrowhead and setting off.
Chapter 1
“AKRITA!!! HURRY THE HECK UP!!” Kate’s voice echoed over the forest, searching for her lost sister. “Where ever you are, anyways.” She grumbled, turning in a circle as she walked. “Damn it Kathryn, you’re going to get us found, or killed!” Akrita whispered angrily as she appeared silently from the bushes behind her. Kate jumped, whirling around and stringing her bow, inserting the arrow into it. Akrita put her hands on her hips. “Really?” She exclaimed, throwing her hands up. The thick redwood forest was rich with deer, and some were even watching the hunters now, curiously. Kate giggled and lowered her bow. “You really sound like a wolf now, able to sneak through the bushes and trees so quietly.” “Well at least I don’t get actually shot at.” Akrita spat back at her, glowering. Shrugging, Kate returned to looking through the green woods.
Her bright red hair was in deep contrast to Akrita’s dark Brown locks, but when they stood together, their hair made them look like the redwood trees. A dark brown with incredibly bright red in them. Bark was peeling off the main trees, which made them look like a gigantic cat came and used them as a scratching post. This was not entirely lying. Shara cats travel from the mountains down to The Plates in the wet seasons, following the herds. Deer, Elk, Moose, All kinds of prey came. Kate looked around for the hybrid predators. They had a caninish look to them, with a long tail. The Shara cats were scruffy, pack animals, and never went anywhere without at least 3 others with them. Being 10 feet long and 5 feet high, the smallest ever recorded Shara, then when you see one you know there’s trouble. These cats were bred for one thing...Living in the forest and killing anyone who leaves the city.
Kate found what she was looking for. A herd of elk made its way through the forest. The dumb things went straight at her, oblivious to the hunter waiting only meters away. Kate squatted and raised her bow. Akrita sat close by, carefully observing her sister’s actions. Focusing in on the prey, a cow elk with a limp, she trained the bow on its head. She switched her eyes to glance at Akrita, who was shaking her head. “Its scull is too thick. That works for deer, but nothing larger.” Frustrated with her sister’s rejection, she trained the arrow on its heart. It would be bloody, but at least then it would be instant. She let the string go. The arrow went silently through the air, on a mission. Success. It pierced cleanly, the elk’s eyes widening in alarm, rearing, and then collapsing as it dropped to the ground, dead. Kate smiled. Food and no suffering. This would also help the population, for there would be no limps anymore in this herd. The rest of the herd abandoned its dead member, running off into the gigantic redwood forest. . Kate and Akrita both stood, and trotted over to the dead elk. Kate, mumbling something, pulled the arrow out gently, careful not to break the shaft. She looked it over, and then set it back in the sheath. They both were as quiet as possible. The only thing that kept them out of prison last time was the close relationship with the head officer. Lucky they were his nieces. Kate bent down, resting her elbows on her knees. Closely examining the elk, she looked closer. A piercing bite was still producing blood on the back of the poor cow’s leg. Grunting her displeasure to see a Shara bite, Kate quickly turned to look at Akrita. “We need to get Railyn before getting the meat.” Kate growled, narrowing her eyes into the trees. “Why? Those stupid cats will have eaten it by the time we get back. It’s useless, Kate.” Akrita said, throwing her hands up in the air. “Akrita, have some faith.” Kate grumbled, picking herself up off the ground and trotting to three river. Three river was the river that separated the forest from the City, 3. So they named it three river.
