The Herd(Read and post <3)

[Meredith's Whiskers]

Hello I decided to write a story about horses cause I have nothing else to do. So here goes.^^
Basically it's about a herd lead by Nanook and a lone mare that joins the herd.They will go through many challenges, gaining new members and loosing some.

Chapter 1
  Nonook stood on a hill and looked over his herd. The wind blowing in his main and tail he whinnied to his mate Tess. She lifted her head from grazing and watched him. Nanook started loping down the slope. Tess, who was with foal, finished chewing the grass in her mouth and trotted to the foot of the hill. Nanook stopped just in front of his mate and nuzzled her cheek.Tess nuzzled him back then sighed. "I'm glad your back."

Nanook nodded and started walking to his herd. Tess watched him and then fallowed. The other mares bickered to him then continued grazing. He Stood in front of his herd with Tess at his side. 

  Raine navigated through the forest as fast as she could. With the wolves right on her tail she had no time to rest. Her hooves hurt and scratch on her hind leg stung but she kept going. Without her herd she couldn't defend herself. She burst into a clearing and kept going gaining speed. She looked behind her. No wolves, but a stallion!She halted and spun around. The stallion's  coat was white and he had a short mane. The stallion had blood on his hooves most likely from stepping on wolves. Raine looked around and noticed other mares gathering. One walked to the stallion. "Who are you?"Raine asked the stallion. 
  "My name is Nanook, this herd's leader. May I ask who you are?"Nanook held his head high staring at Raine. Tess stayed close to Nanook. In her vulenerable state she seeked protection from Nanook. 
  "Raine."She shook her mane and looked at the other mares then to her cut, it stung like crazy but she just ignored it. 
  "Do you wish to join my herd?"Nanook glanced at Tess then looked back at Raine. 
  "Sure."Raine said. 
  "Then you should meet my herd. This is Tess my mate."He nuzzled Tess."That is Vanity over there and that is Xenthia. They will introduce you to the rest of the herd."Raine nodded and walked towards Vanity and Xenthia. 
  "Hello, I'm Xenthia."One of the horses said. 
  "Hi."Raine answered. 
  "I'm Vanity."The horse said and started walking away. 
  "Vanity!"Xenthia yelled after her."Nanook wants us to introduce Raine the rest of the herd!"
  "Whatever."Vanity said and loped away. 
  "She's still angry that Nanook chose Tess as his mate."Xenthia chuckled. "She doesn't want to listen to a word he says.I'm just worried she'll go to another herd just to make him jealous."
  "Oh."Raine watched Vanity run off. "Would she do that?"
  "Oh yes!She'll do anything for that stallion."Xenthia shook her  mane. "Anyways let's go meet the mares."Xenthia started walking to where all the other horses were grazing and Raine fallowed. "This is Delilah and Mai. Those two, Tayla and Lieh are sisters."
"Oh."Raine smiled and sniffed the air."Xenthia...Wolves!"

ess left the side of Nanook. Pains stabbed her side.It's time. She thought, and walked to the forest. She found a grassy opening in the foliage and trees. She lay down and lay her head on the ground. She whinnied in pain. 

Xenthia ran to Nanook. "Nanook there are wolves in the forest closing in."She stopped in front of him with Raine close behind. Nanook reared and warned the mares to flee."Where's Tess?"Xenthia looked around.Just then they heard a cry of pain. 
  "She's foaling!"Nanook charged down the hill and into the forest. He let out a cry for her and when she didn't answer he kept going. "Tess!"He ran into the clearing where a couple of wolves were circling her. Tess looked up at him. He reared and charged at one. It jumped back and Nanook bucked hitting one in the jaw cracking it. Nanook snorted and trampled on another one. Nanook looked back at Tess she had gotten up and licked a little wet foal. Nanook nickered and glanced around for any other wolves. He walked over to the two once he was sure there were no more.
 "Nanook..."She sighed and nuzzled him. The little foal tried to stand but fell. Nanook nickered to the little foal."What should we name him?"
  "Him?Well, how about Spartain?"Nanook watched the colt. 
  "That's good. Spartain."The black colt looked up at them and tried to get up again but failed. Just then a growl came from the bush behind Spartain. The wolf jumped out and grabbed Spartain with it's claws. Spartain  cried for his mother with eyes wide open. "Spartain!"Tess screamed as the wolf dug its teeth into his neck. Nanook hit the wolf with his hooves and it ran off. Tess walked closer to Spartain and nickered."Spartain..."She laid down beside the colt. His breathing was shallow and blood stained his neck and sides. Tess lay her head on Spartain's neck.
 "Tess...We hav-"
  "No! Nanook, I'm not leaving him!"Tess closed her eyes. Tears rolled down her cheek and hit Spartain's neck. Nanook gently nudged her up. 
  "He's gone, Tess.He's gone."He silently guided her out of the forest. The rest of the herd was watching them near the river. Concern was written all over the faces of the mares as they watched Tess, who had blood on her cheeks and chest, and Nanook make their way down the hill. Xenthia and Raine met them at the foot of the hill. 
  "O-our colt i-is gone."Tess hung her head more tears managed to fall down her face.
