Final entry of the third book is here!Dear SJ,
Derek and I circled each other in the narrow hall.
He twirled both his blades like a trained warrior, and for a moment I was scared.
Stop being afraid, I told myself.
The worse that could happen is you die.Sounds pretty bad to me.
I stood in a casual stance, watching him make a spectacle of himself with his blade-twirling.
"You ever going to fight me?" I asked, slightly irritated. "Or are you just practicing for the flag-twirling team?"
Wrong thing to say.
Derek charged at me, his blades singing as they cut through the air.
I barely had enough time to dodge, and our blades clanged together.
The sound rang throughout the house, but no one seemed to have heard.
Where was Violet?
Again I'd let my thoughts distract me, and Derek nearly cut my throat with the wakizashi.
If I'm stupid enough to let a short blade get that close... Well, that's a disgrace.
I parried another strike from the wakizashi and almost had my paw cut off by the katana.
He's got two blades. There's no way I can win with just one! Then I spotted something shiny out of the corner of my eye.
Another blade.
It was another katana, lying at the end of the hall.
I started backing up, parrying and lashing out as Derek advanced.
I was so close to the second sword, so close...
And then my paws were swept out from under me.
When I looked up, I saw Derek staring down at me, the tip of his katana pointed at my throat.
"You're not very good at fighting," he said, his voice cold. "I thought the Elites taught you better than that."
I tried to kick him off, but failed.
Why did he have to bring that up?
"Not with a blade," I admitted, feeling the prescence of the lone katana waiting for me to take it up and start using it.
He laughed a bitter, hollow sound.
"Jerry was an exceptional fighter. I'm surprised you learned nothing from him while he was training you."
Jerry...
Suddenly it all came rushing back.
The Elites, my training, Jerry, Maro...
"You'd best be surprised, Derek," I snarled. "For he's taught me a few tricks."
I immediately swung my blade, catching him in the arm.
He yelped and stumbled off me, clutching his arm where the laceration had been made.
I picked up the second katana and charged him, now armed with two blades.
Derek rolled out of the way, nearly colliding with the wall.
"Who's the weak one now?" I said mockingly.
He stood up, glaring hard at me.
I'll admit, it made me uncomfortable.
Then he lunged at me, cutting my shoulder with the wakizashi.
I had just enough time to move out of the way and parry his katana.
"Ooh, sudden anger. Looks like hurting you gives you power. I'll make sure to end you quickly," I said as blood seeped out of my new wound.
Derek said nothing.
We both charged each other at the same time, the clang of metal on metal ringing through the house.
For hours it seemed, we fought.
Parry, counter, block, strike...
Then came a time when we were both tired, leaning against opposite walls and glaring at each other.
"You still haven't won," he said. "You can't hurt my family."
"Like you still care about them?" I spat.
He looked surprised at first, but looked as if he wanted to hear what I had to say.
"Your father kicked you out of the house. And guess whose fault it is?" I pointed at Violet's closed bedroom door.
Derek snarled, "You think that's going to stop me from defeating you? Despite all that's happened, I love my family, and that'll never change."
Silence filled the hall.
We stared at each other for a long time.
And then...
"Forget it," I said, dropping my blades. "I can't do this anymore."
Suddenly a black mist manifested at the top of the stairs.
It grew larger and shaped itself into a dog.
A cloaked dog, to be exact.
Basement Ninja.
"What're you doing here?" I growled, walking up to him boldly.
His piercing blue eyes yielded no emotion as he watched me.
"You had a job to do," he said his voice dark. "And you failed..."
Derek came forward, still clutching his blades.
"So
you're the one who put her up to this..." he said, snarling. "I had a feeling it'd be you."
BN laughed. This seemed like a game to him, I thought.
"Oh yes, I remember you," BN said without aknowledging Derek's comment. "You're that little pup who always played in the basement even though you weren't allowed."
Leave it to Derek to play in a dark, evil place.
"You... you've seen me before?" Derek asked, baffled.
BN leaned against the wall, crossing his arms.
"Only too many times to count," he replied.
"Then why did I see you?" Derek said. "Why didn't you show yourself?"
"Didn't wanna scare you," BN said with a laugh.
It felt awkward to be in the middle of this strange reunion, so I spoke up.
"So, what're you going to do since I 'failed' to kill Derek's family?" I asked.
BN seemed to ponder this for a moment.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything.
"Nothing," he replied finally.
"Nothing?" Derek and I said in unison.
"That's right," BN said, "nothing."
Derek and I exchanged a look. We both knew this wasn't good.
We were about to ask what that meant when BN vanished.
"I guess this is over," Derek said after a long pause.
"I guess so..."
So yeah, basically the whole battle is over. I drove out of town in Shay's truck a few nights later though.
I couldn't risk staying at Derek's house, especially when BN was lurking around.
As I focused on the road, I thought about how much had happened over the past year.
Made and lost friends... Discovered dark secrets...
Sigh...
I stopped on the side of the road near a cliff.
As I sat on it, looking at the land before me, I felt something nudge me.
"Hey Yin," I said without glancing back.
The lion sat down next to me, his tail flicking.
"I'm okay now," I told him. "There's no more to worry about."
He shot me a look as if to say "don't jynx it."
As the sun set I decided to head back to the truck.
Yin jumped into the back, and we both took off on the road to nowhere.
"It's just you and me buddy."

Finally! I'm finished! This concludes book three, folks! Not sure if I'll start a book four... we'll have to wait and see.
