"Worried?" A voice woke me up, out of my almost-daydream.
I turned and flashed Tauro a sarcastic smile. "Of course not" I said, my words dripping with sarcasm. "You?" I asked.
He laughed quietly. "Me? C'mon honey, Me? Worry?" He Laughed again, then turned to the lift doors. "Nearly there" He commented casually, as if it had nothing to do with him. I rolled my eyes and turned back, irritation seeping through me. We were supposed to be a team. But really, I did all the work. He just hung around, making irritating comments and generally being annoying.
The lift stopped with a faint, rusty clank. I took a deep breath as the doors opened, shedding light onto us. "C'mon" I muttered to him, and stepped forwards, hoping that for once, he would just do what I asked. I walked down the catwalk-like path that was raised up between the guards, feeling strangely self-conscious. At least I wasn't wearing a skirt, or something equally embarrassing that they could look up.
Tauro was right next to me, awkwardly close. As I quickened my pace, wanting to get this over and done with, he flashed me a smug smirk, so quick that only I would be able to catch it. I suppressed rolling my eyes as we reached the end of the catwalk-path. I looked at the man we had come to see, and taking another deep breath, I was about to begin...but Tauro (The irritating fool!) Beat me too it.
"Sir Delaney?" He began, traces of his smug, jerkish smile still on his face.
"Yes." The Delaney replied. "That is me. What do you want, make it quick"
Tauro seemed slightly taken back, but then regained his confidence.
"Just one thing" He said calmly, attempting at tension.
"Oh, the suspense is killing me" Came the cold, sarcastic reply.
Tauro shrugged. "Fine. The Ring of Aithar"
Delaney sat back, obviously surprised. For a moment, there was utter silence, the room filled with tension. Then Delaney laughed. A cold, bitter, barking laugh that lasted a few seconds. He then gazed at us, incredulous, a smile smugger than Tauro's on his face.
"Yes, I have it" he smiled, holding up his hand and twirling the golden ring on his index finger once, showing off the blue-black jewel. Dark as midnight, shining like the stars. I snarled under my breath.
"But I rather like it right here, on my finger" He smiled cruelly. "And now, since you have nothing for me -
I cut him off angrily. "Our country is dying! And you're sitting here, a fat, greedy old man! We need that ring to fight the plague and the infected animals! The scientists are destroying us! Please!" I was half snapping, half snarling.
Delaney smirked. "You're genetically engineered with 'powers' no? The scientists gave you amazing abilities. I'm sure you both have incredible powers" He said, letting sarcasm creep into his voice at the end. "And you can't save yourselves?"
"You Know that we can't. They're disposing of us, and the faulty plague-fighting beasts that went wrong and spread the plague. We're killing them, they're killing us. The ring is our last hope! With its powers we could save ourselves!"
Delaney smirked even more. "Oh, how very touching" He smirked, the sarcasm so blunt it made me wince mentally. I groaned inwardly. Jeez, this guy was such a jerk. We needed that ring - or even just the stone - So bad. I was on the verge of morphing into a snake or something, and snatching it. Yeah, sorry.
Recap: My 'power' is morphing. Tauro's is electricity. Those scientists had something wrong with them, I know. I sighed and looked at Tauro. For once, he was actually paying attention. He turned to look at me, his expression saying 'We need to get out of here, in once piece, with the ring, alive'
Ring - Doable.
Out of here - Doable
In one piece, Alive - Not so easy.
But hey? Nothing like two jerks, an army that wants to kill you and near death for daily fun, right? Humph. Then Tauro did something stupid. (Which probably shouldn't surprise me, he does stupid things daily) This was really stupid though. He leapt at Delaney. I morphed into a vixen and leapt after him as the army began to scramble up the sides of the catwalk-path. We had about 5 seconds. I made a mental note to slap Tauro if we survived this, then bit Delaney, hard. Alarms began to wail and screech, red lights were flashing and Delaney was laughing. The army began to advance....
