Where?Dear SJ,
It seemed like I drove forever. I couldn't stop crying; Yin was probably the only real friend I'd ever had. And now he was gone. I mean, he chose to stay in his home, but I was still sad.
Suddenly the truck sputtered, slowing down. I pulled to the side of the road and turned the key.
I jumped out of the truck and walked around it, searching for anything that looked out of place. And then I saw him.
In the bed of the truck, gazing at me through pale eyes, was Derek.
I gasped and jumped back.
"Heh, surprised to see me?" he said, leaping down to stand in front of me.
"What do you want?" I snarled. "Come back to try and kill me?"
Derek stretched his wings.
"Nah, I'm over that. You can trust me this time."
"Oh sure," I said sarcastically.
He leaned against the truck, looking up and down the road.
"Middle of nowhere. Psshht."
Then with a smug look at me, he said,
"So, not going home?"
My wings started aching, and it was making me irritable.
"Shay killed my family, okay? He even killed Raven. Just go away; it's not like you care anyway," I snapped.
It was Derek's turn to be surprised. "Shay killed Raven?" he growled.
I nodded, rolling my eyes. "That's what I just said."
Why did he have to act so dumb?
"Ahh...." Derek ran his fingers through his long black hair.
I could tell he was hurt to hear about our friend.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to find another place to live," I said, making for the driver's side of the truck.
Derek moved to stand between me and my destination.
"I know a place," he said. "My friend and I have been fixing it up for six weeks now. It's almost finished..."
"Hah!" I said coldly. "As if I would trust you after what you did back in Nox City."
He let out an aggravated sigh.
"Lux, that was a long time ago. I've changed my ways. I'm a new dog now. You can trust me."
To me, it sounded automatic, as if he'd rehearsed that speech.
"Yeah, whatever," I said. "Just get lost."
But Derek wouldn't get lost. In fact, he seemed eager to help me.
"Here, let me help with the truck..."
I wanted to snap at him, but thought better of it. That'd just lead us nowhere. So I agreed to his help.
After about an hour, we had the truck running again.
"So, you still want to go your own way?" Derek said, opening the door for me.
I turned to look at him as I climbed into the driver's seat.
"If I could trust you like old times, then I would go with you," I said.
"But you can trust me... You
have to," I heard him say as he shut the door.
I pretended I hadn't heard him and drove off, not once checking the rearview mirror.
