Hi there,
this is my Percy Jackson fanfiction. I haven't thought up a clever title yet, but my friend read the first chapter and she thinks it's pretty good so far. (:
CHAPTER ONE
Shelley trudged through the mud angrily. Of course they always made HER go feed the snakes in that disgusting snake pit. No one even liked her. Why? She was still an unclaimed camper, and had been so for a few months already. Everyone in the Hermes cabin, where most of the unclaimed kids stayed, none of them ever talked to her and she felt very alone at times.
As Shelley strode up to the snake pit she shuddered to see the snakes writhing in their pit, hoping to get some animal - or human - flesh. Shelley hissed at them and a few actually skittered away. Her stomach sank. Even animals were scared of her. She picked up the bucket of dead mice and dumped it into the pit disgustedly. Then, she turned away fast so she wouldn’t have to see them eating the mice.
“Shelley!” called a deep voice. Up at the top of the hill was Chiron, one of the camp leaders. He had his arms crossed and he was stamping his hooves impatiently. “Did you feed the serpents?”
Shelley nodded. “Yes, sir, I did.” He turned to go. “Good,” he said as he walked away slowly. “It’s time for our final meal of the day, if you would like to join us.” His voice was kind. Shelley appreciated that Chiron was always so much nicer to her than everyone else. He treated her like a daughter of Zeus.
Chiron trotted away towards the dining hall, with Shelley following behind, struggling to keep up. Even when he walked slowly, he was still much faster than her, what with his four legs and all. Shelley huffed as she followed him up to the hall, where a delicious smell wafted into Shelley’s nose. Mm, smelled like they were having stew today.
The kids at the Hermes table were, as usual, clustered together at the end of the table. Shelley swallowed her loneliness and walked over to the table. At the table were two empty seats with bowls full of stew. Wait, two? Why two? Shelley stared curiously at the other Hermes kids. It looked like they were all there. She couldn’t anyone missing. She sat down at her bowl and ate it silently, wishing the other kids would talk to her.
Suddenly she heard the door creak open and a tall boy with long brown hair walked in, followed by Chiron. Shelley hadn’t even noticed the centuar leave, but apparently he had. She looked up at the boy and wondered who it was. She’d never seen him before. Perhaps he was a new camper?
Sure enough, Chiron lead him to the Hermes table. The unclaimed kids always came to the Hermes table. Shelley stuck her hand out to the boy. “Hello. I’m Shelley.” Much to Shelley’s surprise, the boy took her hand and nodded. “I’m Jack. Nice to meet you.” Shelley observed him. He looked about fourteen, so they were about the same age.
Jack ate his food slowly, not meeting anyone’s eyes. Shelley tried to think of something to say to him, but no words came to her mind. Instead she blurted out stupidly, “So, you’re a demigod too?” Jack grinned. “Yep, obviously.” Shelley blushed madly. “Um..sorry...sometimes my mouth says things that my mind disagrees with.” Stupid, stupid! She chastised herself.
“It’s okay,” Jack said, smiling. “I say silly things too sometimes.” Shelley could tell she and Jack would be good friends. She smiled back at him. “How long have you known that you were a demigod?” she asked. A basic question, but probably one he hadn’t been asked yet.
“Only about a week,” Jack confessed. “Chiron sent one of the sons of Apollo to protect me after I found out, but there are monsters coming after every demigod now.”
Shelley looked confused. “Why?” Jack shrugged. “Dunno,” he replied. “They kept saying ‘Give it back! Hades needs it!’ to me, and I have no idea what Hades needs.”
With a shudder at the thought of facing Hades’ monsters, Shelley looked over at Chiron. He looked concerned. “I bet we’ll find out in a minute. Chiron looks worried.” Jack glanced at him too. “Yeah, he does look pretty worried.” Chiron clapped his hands together loudly.
“Everyone, I’ll need your attention PLEASE.” Chiron gazed around the now-quiet hall. When he wanted everyone to watch him, everyone watched. He wasn’t exactly the one to ignore, particularly when he had that expression of worry. Every person in the hall turned their eyes to Chiron. He cleared his throat and said, “The sword of Hades has been stolen. No one in the Underworld saw anyone suspicious go in or out, and, as you all may or may not know, it is almost impossible to get out of the Underworld once you get in.”
Several campers nodded. Shelley supposed they had learned about it somewhere, because obviously, none of them had ever been to the Underworld and come back alive. None of the campers were allowed to leave camp unless it was urgent, a quest, or summer break. Shelley shot a sideways glance at Jack. He was watching Chiron intently. Of course, being a new camper, he wanted to make sure he knew what was going on.
“Later, Dionysius and I --” he was interrupted by a loud “CALL ME MR. D!” in the back. Chiron sighed. “All right. Later tonight, Mr. D and I will be deciding on the campers who will aid Artemis in recovering this sword. I understand that if Hades does not have his sword returned in a timely manner, he’ll march himself to Olympus and destroy everything in sight.”
Shelley noticed a few campers looking worried, while others looked eager. Then Chiron did something strange. He looked at Jack and gave him this look, which Jack returned, as if they were exchanging a message through their minds. Then he gave the new camper a small nod and clip-clopped out of the dining hall.
Jack stood up quickly. “All right. Er...nice meeting you Shelley. I suppose I’ll see you a lot, since we’re in the Hermes cabin together, eh?” Shelley nodded at him and he walked away, leaving his half-eaten stew behind.
Shelley finished her stew and stood up to go back to her cabin. As she left the hall, she saw Chiron talking to Jack about something. She sighed and made her way towards the Hermes cabin. Suddenly she felt weak in the knees and she stumbled to the ground. Electricity charged through her veins as she lay on the ground weakly. Chiron had galloped over to her and was bent over her, looking at her with shock. Shelley coughed. “What is it?” she asked in a faint voice.
Chiron called to Mr. D as Shelley giggled. She wasn’t sure what was going on, but she felt like she’d just been struck by lightning. When Dionysius had run up, he gasped. “She’s been claimed, I’d say,” he said in his usual tart voice.
“Shelley, you are a daughter of Zeus.”
