Book 1
World War III
The Night of the Bombs

Prologue

It was dark, close to midnight, and five men sat huddled around a campfire on some uncharted island. One of them held a thick chain in his hand that snaked behind him and disappeared into the darkness.
After a few moments one of them spoke, his voice gruff and hollow “It’s time we get moving, are the experiments under control yet?”
“Yes” the man holding the chain replied, yanking on it and dragging something forward that walked on two legs that looked almost human in the weak light, though it was only the size of a child.
“Can it really fly? Who will watch it up there?” one of the others spoke up, his voice almost excited at seeing the creature.
The man with the chain smiled and yanked again “Fly, get in the air or you won’t have dinner!”
Two wings slowly stretched out behind the human-like thing as it let out a low moan. The wings flapped once, then twice and finally it lifted into the air with a groan.
The first man who had spoken smiled with what someone might call an evil grin “Then in two nights time, they will fall.”

A young girl, only about eleven, sat on a couch in a small, almost ancient house. Her finger pushed the up button on the remote as she flicked through the channels, finally stopping on a news channel showing photos on missing children. After a moment she turned up the volume to listen.
“Another child was kidnapped late yesterday afternoon, that makes the tenth one in just this week.”
“Yes, the police can’t find any leads as to what is happening. They are urging parents to keep their children indoors and…”
The TV flickered off as her dad stepped in and hit the power button. “None of that, you shouldn’t be watching those things.” He said as he turned to face her “Now I have to go pick up your mom and baby brother from the hospital, will you be alright alone for a while Amber?”
“Of course, and I’ll stay inside.” Amber replied and stood up to stretch “What time is it?”
“About 8 o’clock.” Her dad replied and left the room quickly.
Amber watched him go; still bored out of her mind and the only thing on TV were more news stories about the kidnappings. Finally she turned and left the room herself, hearing her dad’s truck starting up outside, and turned on the computer.
