Chapter 1: pg 1
Spring came late to the forest. The water was still frozen when the birds came back from flying south, and snow still lay on the ground( really though, it was more like slush then snow, but not quite) In a small hole dug into a hillside, a she-wolf lay nestled inside with her 3 newborn pups: Nyan, a black wolf who looked almost exactly like her mother, Nya, Ranku, a skinny brown male, and finally Marti, a silver coated female. Suddenly, pain gripped her stomach. She yelped in pain as a contraction shook her. It faded slowly, and then another gripped her even harder then the previous one. She howled, but the pups did not notice, for they were both blind and deaf. She wished that her mate Lupus would come and soothe her, but she knew that would never happen. A she-wolf never allowed another wolf into her den. Never. It was unheard of. She pushed with all her might, and then a small shape plopped out on to the ground. Suddenly she froze and her thoughts broke off. There was something wrong with the pup. She blinked, and sniffed it. It was small. Much too small. She blinked again, and felt sadness well up inside her. The pup, she thought, is not likely to survive the winter. It probably would not survive its first moon. She shook herself. It did not matter if she didn't think it would survive. It may.Hope. She must have hope. "Maia", she said softly. It had been her mother's name. A beautiful name. She looked at each of her pups slowly. Nya, Ranku, and Marti. And Maia. Now there was Maia
