Prologue
The nameless kit slowly crept up to the Thunderpath, following the scent of his lost brother. I don't know how they can't smell Moonkit. He smells as fresh as if he were standing beside me. These cats must be stupid. He felt a pelt brush against his, and heard a comforting purr, but when he turned his head he saw nobody. Moonkit's scent grew stronger. The kit, who was barely old enough to walk, looked across the path that reeked of monsters. He saw nothing. He had no clue how he had gotten where he was alive, but the whole time he traveled across NatureClan's territory, he had felt as if StarClan itself was guiding him.
He must've crossed it! Oh, I shouldn't have ever said those things to him... "Moonkit?" he called. There was no answer, just the soft breeze of the wind. He didn't even notice the starry silver spotted tom sitting beside him. With no hesitation, the kit darted across the Thunderpath. That's when he noticed the huge monster. Far away, but not far enough for his tiny paws to take him to safety in time. He stared at it with huge dark brown eyes until he was hit.
Pain shot through the kit, the overwhelming weight of the monster crushing his face and head until he had felt that for sure, he was either dead or decapitated as his short life flashed before his eyes. But when the roaring faded to the distance, and he was still yowling in pain, that is when he realized he was still alive. The pain died slightly, but the nameless kit couldn't feel his left eye. Moonkit's scent poured over him, soothing him.
That was when the kit realized Moonkit was with him all along. He tried to speak, but blood poured into his mouth, and he began choking on his blood. That's when the kit caught a new scent: Flamestar, the kits' father. The pale orange tom ran over to him, not seeming to notice Moonkit crouched protectively over his littermate's motionless body. He frantically licked the blood off his son's hideous face. "My kit, my kit, my kit," he sobbed. "Please don't die. You're all I have left." The kit knew exactly what he was talking about. Flamestar was his only living relative, and most feared him. He was not only Flamestar's only relative, but his only friend.
Another starry cat appeared beside Moonkit. She was a beautiful silver spotted she-cat, exactly like Moonkit, but her eyes were dark brown like her other son. Flamestar saw her. "Crater. You walk among StarClan now?" At the mention of his mother's name, feeling the pelts of his family slowly heating his, the kit found a new strength inside him. Slowly, cautiously, as his mother told Flamestar she wanted to name him Monsterkit to honor his bravery, his right eye opened.
What was not explained:
- Flamestar was going to find Moonkit by himself when he heard Monsterkit yowling in pain. He instantly ran over of course.
- Moonkit and Monsterkit's mother, Crater, was a rogue. When Flamestar fell in love with her, everybody was even more suspicious of him.
- Nobody liked Flamestar because he tried so hard to be a great leader, he acted cruel and often unfair.
- Moonkit made it past the Thunderpath and was found by a vicious badger. The badger killed him. He was too scared to call for help.
- Crater died giving birth to her kits.
- Moonkit wandered away because he heard StarClan calling him. They called him because unfortunately, it was his fate to die so this would happen to Monsterkit.
- Monsterkit wasn't all that brave (StarClan gave him the bravery to approach the Thunderpath). But after being scarred , it sparked something in him that made him a fearless cat. He was made deputy because he could defend and protect his clan fearlessly. That explains why it was his fate to be ran over.
