Ch. 2
The creaking of the front door echoed around the room as I entered the house I lived in with my brother.
I flipped on the light switch and yelped. My big brother, Eli, was standing not two inches from my face. His expression was a mixture of worry and anger.
"Where the heck have you been?" He asked me quietly, his voice laced with anger.
Eli had watched over me ever since the car crash seven years ago, when our parents had died. He was now twenty-eight and, since I wasn't old enough to have my own house, I stayed with him. He was a fun guy most of the time, but he worried abuot me way too much. I guess he didn't want to loose me like we did our parents.
He crossed his arms and stared me down. I tried hard not to, but I was soon giggling at his serious expression, it was so bazar.
"What? Do I have something on my face?" He asked worridly. His eyes were wide as he rubbed his face and ran his hands through his dark brown hair.
"No jus--"
"Ohmygod Lilly, what's that on you're shirt? Is it blood?! Tell me the truth." He was staring at me as if he could see into my soul, and maybe he could, I mean, I'd just had a chat with a wolf.
Please, reread that last sentence and tell me I'm not crazy. Please...
I was totaly loosing touch with reality...
"Uh...well shoot, this is odd...Um..." I pulled on the hem of my blood-stained shirt and decided to tell the truth, "Would you believe me if I said that I'd just saved a someone's life?"
"No, but maybe if you said you'd killed somebody. Do you need me to drop you off at jail?" I think that he may have only been half joking.
"Nah, but, would you believe me if I took you to see him and his talking wolf when I go back to make sure he's still alive?"
"Go get cleaned up, but this is not over! We'll go see your imaginary boyfriend tomorrow, then we'll see what other stories you can come up with. I'll get the truth out of you yet, because Lilly, talking wolves is a really lame excuse." I was halfway up the stairs by the time he was finnished.
"I do not have an imaginary boyfriend." I muttered under my breath.
Warm water flowed over me as I cleaned myself of blood. When I was done with my shower, I slipped into my PJ's and climbed into bed, praying that Spencer would be okay.
I got up in the morning and did something I'd almost never do. I put on a dress.
I'm usually not a dress-y person, (truthfully, I didn't even know I owned a dress, but I actualy had a few) but I just, I dunno, felt like wearing one.
Falling just above my knees, the dress was yellow and a bit sparkly. I picked it out because I decided that it would look best with my dark reddish-brown hair. I found my white fedora hat and tied a yellow ribbon across it, then I took a little white jacket, and my white flip-flops, and was ready to go. I even took extra time to brush my hair.
"Why are you all dressed up?" Eli greets me as I walk into our kitchen for some breakfast.
"Ummm? Felt like it." I mummbled around a mouthful of poptart.
"...You don't have a boyfriend I don't know about, do you?" Eli asks after a while, shooting me a stern look.
I sigh, "Really Eli, sometimes I just don't think you trust me."
"Sometimes I don't." He counters.
"I'mma walk to school with Taylor."
"Okay, I'll pick you up after school." I knew he was thinking, what a waste of gasoline, following my little sister around on the basis of a story. But he didn't say it out loud, that was cool of him.
"Sweet," I replied, grabbing my backpack and heading out to meet my friend Taylor and walk to school.
"Lilly! Oh, I didn't even notice that that was you at first!" A girl with blonde corkscrew curls rushed up to hug me. It was my best friend, Taylor.
"Tay Tay! Haha, yeah, the dress huh?" We began walking the little ways to school, and for those of you who care, we actually did not take the dirt road, I just like going there when Taylor's not with me. I guess you could say it's the more scenic route.
"So...?" Taylor says after a while of walking in silence.
"So?"
"The dress! Are you going to a party after school?"
I stared at my feet for a bit before replying, "Nope."
"Ooooh, I see..." She said knowinly, with a teasing smile directed at me.
"What?" I wrinkle my brow and give her a hard stare.
"You're trying to impress a boy!" She screeches.
"I...No! What!?"
"It's true, it's true! It's is soooo true!" She sang, grabbing my arms and twirling me around.
We were both laughing and stumbling around when our school came into sight.
At school, it seemed like everyone there had a comment on my choice of apparel.
One of my teachers, a bubbly, cheery, annoying woman noticed and said to me, "Oh, Lilly, you're all dressed up!" Heh, yeah, kinda stating the obviouss there lady.
I was walking down the hallway when a boy with messy blonde hair came up to walk next to me.
"You dressed up for me Lil?" He asked.
That got him shoved up against the lockers with a threat. Let me see...I think I said something along the lines of, "I swear, Tony, if you ever say a word to me again, I will knock out all of your shiny white teeth, one by one, then I'll tie you up to a tree by one foot and tell all the little kids that you'll drop candy if hit with a baseball bat." I growled out, my fist in his face.
He just grinned foolishly, "Candy huh? I guess I am pretty sweet." He joked, and I punched him in the gut, walking away as he told his friends that I was 'totally into him.'
Yeah, not.
The soft rumbling of the engine buzzed around us, deepening the silence.
"Ummm...Stop here," I tell Eli. His only answer is the sudden cut of the engine. I pushed open my door and hurridly jumped out. Eli followed a ways behind me as I decided where I had met my new talking wolf buddy.
Trees, trees, trees. Bushes. More trees.
"I think it was here...?" It sounded more like a question than a statement. "Ummm...yeah, let's just go in here. I'm sure we'll find them eventually."
I heard Eli sigh behind me, I knew he was having second thoughts about bringing me out here, he probably thought I'd get him lost. Actually, I probably would.
Slipping into the forest after a bit more speculation, I didn't even wait for Eli. He'd fine me...eventually.
When I finnaly stumbled my way into the clearing where Spencer was injured, I stopped short. Grabbing onto a tree for leverage, I kept myself from slipping as I stopped abrubtly, watching the sight unfold before me. Eddie was standing there, and he was just...breathing. Well, I mean, duh. But it was just one looooong breath, and all of the blood that was on the leaves and grass and ground, just dissapeared.
"Ohmygosh. Eddie, you're magic!?" I screeched, happily clapping my hands together.
He yelped, sounding as if I'd stepped on him, then he jumped, spinning to face me midair.
"Oh, that was such a cool jump Ed, do it again!!"
"No! What!? No!" He yelped in a high pitched voice. Then he said, "Lilly, there's someone behind you. Watch out!" His tone was serious, but I was bent double, laughing at the exspression that he had shown when he'd seen me.
"Lilly? Lil, where'd you go?" Eli stepped into the clearing. "Are you okay Lil? Your face is really red..."
I was laughing to hard to answer him, but I did catch an accusing glance from Eddie. I guess Eli probably wasn't supposed to be here, oh well.
Eli and Eddie were both silent as I attempted to stiffle my laughter.
But then Eli noticed Eddie...
"OHMYGOD!!!" My brother screamed, staring at Eddie, horror written over his face.
Just after I'd stopped laughing, I couldn't help it. I laughed so hard that I fell to my knees, tears leaking from the corners of my eyes, jumping off of my cheeks to splat against the fallen leaves.
When I could finnaly breath again, I whispered to Eddie. "Ed--Eddie, c'mere." The big obsidian-black wolf trotted over, keeping a wary eye on Eli as he did so. I put my head to the wolf's ear and whispered to him. Then I watched as he padded up to Eli, a sour look on his face, and stuck out a paw. "Hi..." He muttered, looking at me for comfirmation. I shook my head, grinning at him. He growled at me. I shrugged and he lowered his paw.
"Oooh, is it a robot?" Eli asked me warily.
I was about to answer when Eddie plopped down, staring into the distance, possibly in the direction that his cabin was. I wasn't sure.
"I'm offended. Do I look like a robot?" He asked. Then, after a bit of silence, he said, "Why are you here?"
I wiped my face of the remaining tears, and stood up. "Just wanted to check on you guys. Spencer, is he...?"
"He's alive, thanks to you. You sure you're not at least half doctor?"
"No...what's half doctor?"
"I dunno. C'mon, we'll go see Spence. He'd love to see the girl who saved his life."
"Oh, okay." I smiled and followed as Eddie led the way. I grabbed Eli's hand as I passed him, as he didn't seem able to move by himself at the moment. "C'mon buddy, we go now, 'kay?"
"Umm...'kay." He mumbled stumbling behind me.
"Spencer! We have guests," Eddie called into the cozy log cabin as he led us through it's door. I followed him to the kitchen to see Spencer at the table, a pencil was in his hand and a paper in front of him. He seemed to be drawing. I'd seen him when I'd helped him live, but I hadn't realized how good looking he was. His black hair, the same color of Eddie's fur, was ruffled in a cute kind of way, falling to almost cover his gray-blue eyes. He looked up from his paper, widened his eyes, and looked at his paper agian. Then his gaze fell on me and stayed. "Lilly?" He whispered, and looked at the paper again. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Was he drawing me!? I immediately threw that thought away.
Eddie gave Spencer a look that made me think, maybe he hadn't told Spencer my name?
I shifted under the boy's gaze.
"Oh, uh...Well, for being half dead yesterday, you look...alive." I muttered, not really looking at Spencer. Anywhere but at the boy staring at me...
Everyone was silent for a second, untill Eli burst out with some random hypothesis of his.
"Vantriliquisim! That's what it is!" He said tiumphantly, pointing at Eddie. We all stared at him. Spencer had an eyebrow raised, I grinned, and Eddie pawed at his face.
"Should we just let him think that?" The wolf asked me.
I shrugged, "I'd rather see what else he can come up with."
Eli was lost in a world all his own, closing his eyes and muttering to himself. When he finnaly spoke, I couldn't help but snort at his obsenities. "I ate a chocolate bar...Can they rot?" I heard him ask himself. He then mumbled something about dreams, and pinched himself. When that didn't work, he saw me watching him, and said, "Oh! Lilly, turn on the TV! We'll see if they have anything about talking wolves." He was pointing towards Spencer's granite counter.
"That's a microwave dimwit." I said.
I looked at me like I was the crazy one, and told me, "Right, right. Turn on the microwave. We'll see if they have wolves on the news and--" He stopped when I burst out laughing at his serious tone. "What's so funny?" He said, shooting me a disdainful look.
"Nothing, Eli, we should go home." I said, glancing at Eddie, who seemed to be trying hard not to laugh at Eli. I looked up at Spencer, his eyes were so intense, seeming to bore right into me. I had to look away before he...I dunno, tore out my soul.
"Nice to see that you're still alive." I mumbled, grabbing Eli's hand to make sure he was with me.
"Eddie, do you think you could help us get out of the forest? It's so confusing..."
"Yeah, sure." The wolf said easily.
"Yes! I bet widdle Ed Ed will show us the way, won't ya boy? Won't ya!? Such a good dog." Eli cooed, crouching down and shaking Eddie's face from side to side.
"Um...Well, this is ackward..." Eddie mumbled, pulling his head from Eli's grasp.
I was trying hard to hold back from laughing, and Spencer was grinning boyishly, as if he enjoyed seeing the wolf's torment.
"Eddie, you've fried my brother's brain." I giggled. Immediately, I stopped. What was I doing!? Giggling like that, so girlishly. Ugh.
"Ahaha." Eddie grumbled, trotting to the door.
I started following behind Eli, who seemed like a child after loosing grip on a balloon as he chased after the wolf. I would have followed them, if not for the warm hand that held me back.
"Wait, I want to talk to you..." I heard Spencer's soft, british tinged voice behind me.
I turned my head to look back at him. He looked nervous talking to me.
"Yeah, okay." I said quietly back to him. Being rewarded with a warm, happy smile, I followed him back into the cabin.
When Spencer and I sat down at the table, there was an ackward silence, where we jsut watched eachother. To be honest, it was a little wierd. I decided to start a conversation.
"So...you and Eddie..." I tried, but I'm really not to good at that kinda of thing. You know, conversing?
"We're um, brothers." Spencer mumbled, looking down at his hands.
"Uh...Well, I guess that's not wierd. No, not at all. Actually, that explains why I can understand him..." Spencer was still staring at his hand, like he didn't want to look at me. Like he was afraid to see what I thought.
"I don't think I even want to know how the heck it's possible that he's a wolf though...Kinda creepy really." I said after a while.
He closed his eyes and smiled, "Just the kind of reaction I'd expect from you...Calm..." He almost seemed to be talking to himself, but he was indeed talking to me.
It was, really, kind of creepy. 'The kind of reaction--' How would he know?
His eyes flashed open a moment later, like he realized what he'd said. He was me tensed up in my chair and tried to ammend.
"I mean, I don't--I um..." He gulped, looking as if he wanted to take the words back.
I laughed, "No really, that's okay. I mean, of course, it wasn't wierd enough that your brother's a talking wolf. Nope, but you know how I'm going to react to things you say." I stood from my seat, and crossed my arms.
"I'm going home. Just try to stop me...Stalker." I grumbled, walking away.
Even when I heard his chair scream backward as he stood, I kept walking. Even as I heard his pleas for me to let him explain, I kept walking. Even when he caught up with me, I well, stopped, and punched him. Sorry, tried to punch him, but he grabbed my fist.
"At least let me walk you home," He said quietly, pushing my hand away from his face, and letting go.
I unclenched my fist.
