Chapter Nine
Unnamed
Unedited and unnamed and stuff.
Stone bounded along, chasing after a white fluffy tail. He was in a small sandy clearing. Bright sunshine shown down through the trees from above. A familiar snowy white she-cat ran ahead of him, her laughter filling the air as he chased her.
Stone pounced, but Dovepaw leaped out of the way just in time. "Missed me!" She giggled. Stone let out a playful growl and dived again while she was occupied with her taunting. This time he didn't miss.
The two tumbled, rolling once before coming to a stop with Stone on top. He held her pinned firmly to the ground with his front paws. Dovepaw looked up at him in surprise for a second before letting out a laugh. "Grasswhisker keeps saying I need to pay more attention in fights."
Stone chuckled. "You should listen." He advised, taking his paw off her so she could get up. Dovepaw didn't get up, though. She rolled, tripping Stone so that he fell down beside her. She giggled at his surprised face as she rolled again, this time so she was on top of him.
"Gotcha" She teased. Stone gave her a wide grin, and opened his mouth to retort, but he stopped. Dovepaw leaned down so they're faces were so close together that her whiskers tickled his. His eyes widened and he snapped his mouth shut. Dovepaw grinned at him, her green eyes sparkling. Stone felt himself blush under his fur, and he put his ears back uncertainly."Um...Stone?" Adira's voice brought Stone back to the waking world. He opened one eye and looked at her irritably. Her green eyes shined back at him, making him even more annoyed. They were just like Dovepaw's.
"What?" He had to keep himself from snapping the reply. He didn't want to wake up yet. It seemed he was only asleep for a second.
Except for the dream... He mused.
"Oh, uh, sorry...I thought you were awake." Adira put her ears back nervously. "I'll just...bye" She muttered, turning to leave.
"Wait! It's okay. What did you want? Is there something wrong?" Stone asked, lifting his head off his paws. His gaze softened when he saw how nervous she seemed to be.
"Oh...I just...well I was gonna ask...well you keep calling the trainies apprentices and the trainers mentors and other things like that, and I just wanted to know why...Is that what they were called where you came from? A clam?" Adira pushed her nerves away and just asked. She seemed to say it all it one breath.
Stone snorted "It's
clan."
"Oh..." Adira let out a small laugh "I knew that"
"Yes, that's what they are called in a clan...only training isn't started until your six moons old." Stone explained, turning his gaze to his paws as he remembered being unable to be an apprentice.
"Why so old?" Adira cocked her head at him.
"Well...kits that young aren't meant to fight. It's just not right, and it's against the warrior code." Stone answered, glancing up at her.
"The what?" Adira asked, looking confused.
"Oh...um...they're kind of like a list of rules. You have to follow them, or Starclan will punish you." Stone tried to explain.
"Um...Starclan?"
"Our ancestors. Those who have died. They live in the stars and look down on us from above." Stone glanced up as he said this, even though he could not see the sky due to the ceiling of the cave.
"How can they punish some one if they live way up there?" Adira glanced up with him.
Stone sighed and turned his face away from her "They just
can, okay?"
Adira looked at him with a confused expression on her face. She waited for a moment, hoping to get a better answer. She frowned when she realized she wasn't going to get one. "Okay..." She muttered, her nerves returning a little. She could tell this was a touchy subject for Stone. She wondered why.
Stone looked up after a minute. "No more questions?"
"Oh...um...so a clan is just like this, only with older trainies and a code?" She asked, pricking her ears forward as he looked up at her.
"No. Every clan I know of is much small than this....and there's not as many ranks. Everybody in a clan works together and helps each other live. Everyone who can hunt hunts, and everyone who can fight fights, but only when the leader tells them to. Clan life is a lot different than here..." Stone trailed off and muttered something that Adira could hear. She didn't take any notice of it, though.
"It sounds amazing. Everyone helps each other? Really?" Adira's eyes shined at the thought, then a confused expression returned. "Wait...what do young cats do, if they are not training?"
"What any kit should do. Eat, sleep, play." Stone shrugged.
"So, if I were in a clan...I'd be playing all day?" Adira smiled dreamily. "No kitsitting or breaking up fights, or scrounging for food?"
Stone gave her a kind of sympathetic look. She had probably never known kindness, having grown up with The Savages. The smallest promise of a bit of free time seemed to fascinate her so much.
Adira blinked, bringing herself back to reality. "Oh...I should really go, now. Sir said he wanted to see you...you should go."
Stone sighed as he got to his paws, then shook his pelt. He didn't feel like training. "Okay, thanks Adira." He muttered, before padding off through the darkness to the exit and his waiting Trainer.
"Where have you been?!" Sir growled the second Stone stepped into the light. He looked especially grumpy today.
"Uh..." Stone began, but wasn't sure what to say.
"I asked for you a while ago. You know how long I've been waiting? You think just because you've been here a moon and you already advanced past Scratch that you can slack off?!" Sir continued, glaring at him.
"Er..." Stone looked shocked. Sir usually never said a thing before a lesson.
Sir glared at him for a moment then huffed. "C'mon." He spat, before whipping around and walking away, only he walked in the opposite direction of the training field.
Stone cocked his head, wondering what was wrong, but hurriedly followed his trainer. He looked around as he walked, and recognized the same path he had taken when he had first joined, or rather was saved by, The Savages.
Sir took his to the outside of Savage's den, and paused. Stone thought he saw something flash in his eyes, but it was gone so fast he wasn't sure it was ever really there. Sir glanced at him, then stepped into the den, waving his tail for Stone to follow.
Stone blinked in the darkness of the den. He noticed a pair of glowing red eyes staring at him, and suppressed a shudder. There was something about Savage that gave him that creepy feeling that makes your fur stand on end.
"Hello, Stone." The smile in Savage's voice could be heard clearly. "Yarrow" He added, looking at Sir. Stone glanced at his trainer and grinned.
Yarrow? That's his real name? No wonder he tells everyone it's "sir"."Savage." Sir's voice was respectful, but Stone could detect a hint of annoyance. This made him even more amused.
Savages glowing red eyes turned back to Stone "Stone, you have learned fast. I must say I'm impressed." He paused as if waiting for a reaction.
Stone blinked, unsure what to say. "Uh...thanks?"
Savage let out a small laugh. "I've decided to train you myself from now on, Stone." He said this as if it were a great prize to be his trainie.
Stone, on the other hand, had to suppress another shudder.
Train with him? No thanks... He looked at Sir then back at Savage.
When Savage realize he was not going to get a reply, he continued "You will stay in here, instead of with all the other trainies." He then turned to Sir "Yarrow, you are no longer need here. Go continue training."
"Yes sir" Sir muttered, that hint of annoyance still present. Stone heard him leave the den.
Savage turned back to Stone and smiled, though Stone couldn't see it. "Make yourself comfortable. I have work to do." He invited, before leaving the den as well.
Stone listened to his paw steps as he left, then looked around. He could hardly see, it was so dark.
How does he live down here?! It's so dark... He thought, as he poked around. He stumbled across what seemed to be a nest. Not wanting to sleep anywhere near Savage, he chose a spot across the den from that nest to be where he would sleep. He carried some extra bedding to that spot and shaped it into a sort of nest.
Stone sat in his new nest and looked around again. He could make out the nest across the den, now. He was quite sure he hadn't been able to before. It seemed the longer he stayed in the dark, the better he could see...or maybe he was imagining it.
"Well, now what?" He wondered out loud. "I've made myself comfortable...sort of..."
His gaze turned back to the nest, and he shuddered to think that Savage would be sleeping there later. Weird how he had never thought of Savage sleeping before.
He doesn't seem like a normal cat. He seems like something more...but of course he sleeps. Everyone does. Stone cocked his head, then shuddered again.
That doesn't mean it's not creepy that I now share a den with him. I won't be sleeping much, I don't think.
