Chapter Eight
Training
Unedited
Stone looked around. He was standing in a small grassy meadow with a creek running through it. Reed surrounded the creek, and wild flowers dotted the meadow. Stone was surprised to find himself in such a peaceful place while dreaming. He cocked his head and stared for a moment, before stepping through the grass to explore.
"Hello?" He called, wondering if somebody was there. Maybe Savage, again?
Stone felt a breeze flow through his fur, and thought he heard a whisper in it. He felt a shiver run down his back as he got the feeling he was being watched. His black ears pricked, and his bright blue eyes scanned the meadow again.
"Who's there?" He demanded, adding a snarl to his face, and unsheathing his claws.
"Relax, little one" The whispering voice came from the wind. Stone immediately obeyed, sheathing his claws and letting a look of curiosity on his face instead.
"Who are you?" Stone asked, looking around once again. He didn't see anybody.
He got no answer, just the sudden feeling that he was alone again. He sighed, sad to know whoever it was was now gone. He got the feeling he knew that voice, but it wasn't familiar.
Suddenly everything went black and a loud laughing filled the air. Savage's laughter. Stone's fur stood on end and he hissed out of surprise. The scent of blood wafted from the grass under Stone's paws. He jumped back and felt himself land on a hard surface, the stone floor of a cave.
"Hahaha, nice try!" Savage's voice surrounded him.Stone jumped awake, hissing. His eyes flew open, and he found himself face to face with Adira, who looked equally surprised.
"Argh!" He jumped back, just as Adira took a step back.
"Sorry!" Adira apologized, a look of amusement filling her face. "Sir wanted me to wake you up. It's time for your training. Get something to eat first, though."
Stone sighed, letting his fur lay flat again. "Oh...okay, thanks."
Stone padded away from her, well aware of her gaze following him. He put his ears in annoyance, wishing she hadn't bothered him.
Better to have strange dreams than a waking nightmare. He thought.
Stone looked at the food in the fresh kill pile. He knew he must be starving, but for some reason he didn't feel hungry. He grabbed a chipmunk and stepped away. He didn't get far before a paw seemed to come out of no where and tiny kit claws scratched across his face.
"That one's mine, Tiny!" Stone heard, as he dropped his meal in surprise.
"What?" Stone put a paw to his muzzle where the kit had attacked him. The scratch didn't hurt much, it was hardly bad enough to draw blood, but he felt the soft ooze of blood drip down his nose anyway. the scent filled his nostrils, causing him to freeze. His eyes went blank for a moment, as if he were in a trance.
"Hey, what's wrong with you?!" The kit's growl brought Stone back to his senses. He blinked away the fogginess.
"Oh, um...okay have it, then." Stone said quickly, turning around to grab something else.
"I don't want it,
now.
You touched it" The kit sneered, then pranced off as if this were the best insult ever.
Stone watched the kit go a for a second, then snatch the dead chipmunk back into his jaws. He glanced around at the other kits. Most of them were staring at him. He quickly stepped into the darkness of a den and laid down to eat.
He didn't even taste his meal, just the overpowering scent of cat blood on his muzzle. He his paw to wipe it off, but the scent was still there from his wound.
When he had finished, he got to his paws and slipped silently to the exit of the trainie den. He glanced back once more, before slipping outside.
Sir sat just outside, looking more annoyed than usual. Stone wondered if that was because he took so long to come. He open his mouth to explain himself, but Sir merely walked away, flicking his tail for Stone to follow.
Stone hesitated for a moment, then snapped his mouth shut and followed. He looked around as he walked, paying more attention to his surroundings.
So many cats here. He thought as he spotted a large group of them practice fighting.
There has to be more here than all the clan together.Sir suddenly stopped and Stone slammed into him. Sir silently shoved him away with a very annoyed expression on his face. Stone put his ears back in embarrassment, and looked away, only to spot a bunch of kits and older cats in the area Sir had brought him to.
Like mentors and apprentices...only that guy has two apprentices...and she has five. He thought with surprise.
"This is the training area. You'll learn to fight and hunt here." Sir explained, then pointed with his tail to a cat who was sitting to the side watching. "Flick here will be your sparing partner. You two will fight until either you beat her, of I say you're done. Go."
Stone looked at Flick. She was large, strange for a she-cat. She had amber eyes and short silver fur. Scars covered her body, just like all the other savages. Stone silently wondered if he would earn himself as many scars as the others.
You should be sizing her up for a fight, not taking notes on how beat up she is. Stone put his ears back and looked her up and down. She was stronger and bigger than him, but he was probably quicker. He could confuse her with a bunch of fast moves, one after the other.
Stone crouched into a fighting position, and across from him Flick did the same. She gave him a grin, though it was in no way friendly. Stone replied with a growl, then he pounced.
He aimed his attack just above her head, while staring at her paws. Just as he had guess, she leaped up to avoid his attack, only to bowled into by Stone. He wasn't heavy enough to knock her off her feet, but she stumbled, and Stone took his chance. He slashed out at her paws, cuasing her to trip up even more. He then landed a final blow to he shoulder, knocking her clean off her paws. Flick fell to the ground with an
oof. Before she would get up again, Stone put his two front paws firmly on on her chest. He bared his teeth in a smile.
Stone looked up at Sir, who had a look of shock on his face. It quickly disappeared, though. Back to the annoyed sneer, as if he had a thorn in his paw. "Let her up." Sir said.
Stone looked back at Flick, her eyes were full of surprise and anger. He stepped off of her and sat down.
"That was pure luck!" Flick claimed, glaring at Stone. "I bet he can't do it, again!"
Sir looked at her for a moment, then turned to Stone. "Do it again."
Stone smiled.
Easy He thought, crouching again into a fighting position. Flick crouched as well, a look of concentration on her face. Stone knew she wouldn't be as easy to trick this time, but maybe he could use that.
Stone pounced again, just like last time he concentrated on her paws, and aimed for above her head. Only this time Flick ducked, then pushed up when he went to land, obviously meaning to knock him out of breath and throw him off. Instead, Stone landed on her back and bounced off again just as she pushed up. He was launched a fox length away, before landing smoothly on his paws.
Flick whipped around to face him. She growled, putting her ears back flat against his head. Stone just smiled, thoroughly enjoying this. His smile seemed to make Flick even more angry. She charged at him, and Stone easily dodged. Her anger made her sloppy. She skidded to a stop where he had just been standing, meanwhile Stone stepped around her and turned to face her. When she whipped around to face him he was fake yawning, now teasing her on purpose.
She charged again. This time Stone leaped into the air and slashed at her back as she went below him. He landed softly on his paws as she skidded to a stop and whipped around again. She let out a frustrated growl, and charged again. Stone snorted.
She doesn't change tactics, does she? He simply stepped aside again. As she went past he slashed at he paws, making her stumble as she avoid them. Just like last time, he gave he a hard shove to he shoulder, and down she went. Again he pinned her to the ground. She glared up at him and let out a low growl.
Stone got off her and looked at Sir expectantly. Sir's face had not changed this whole time. Stone's smiles shrinked a bit when he saw that. "Go back to the trainie den." Sir said, then walked over to Flick. He asked he something as she got up, and she answered back quietly. The two then looked at Stone.
Stone suddenly realized that he was suppose to be leaving, so he turned and started walking. He only half recognized where he was going, and just hoped this was the right way.
Sir watched him go, then looked back to Flick "Amazing, isn't it? How did he learn that?"
Flicked huffed "I tell you, he must have been trained before."
"Yeah. I wonder how good he really is." Sir wonder aloud.
Flick rolled her eyes. "Whatever." She muttered, before padding away, heading towards the other trainies and trainers.
Sir smiled to think he'd been assigned to Stone.
He'll make me look like an amazing trainer, and therefore fighter. Maybe he can help me change ranks. I just have to use his abilities to make it look like I've taught him everything! Sir sunk his claws into the ground in anticipation.
