I'M READY TO BLOOM !!

story: ignoring an event in the city wasn't ursa's style. while she loved her town and the community it fostered, the city was surrounded in an air of excitement and thrills. it was easy to become intoxicated on the feeling alone. there was a parade happening today, and you bet ursa would be there. live music, small businesses, people dancing in the streets, and all kinds of greasy food you know you shouldn't be eating.
this parade was special though. it was a celebration. a celebration of the end of slavery in the united states. how could you ignore that?
the streets roared with the sound of music, laughter, and machinery. bipoc-owned businesses lined the side streets, selling everything from fry bread to african sponges. of course, ursa had to stop here first. her attention was immediately caught by a plethora of colorful jewelry at one stand, made from polymer clay and beads upon closer inspection. the woman who presumably ran the booth gave ursa a toothy smile as she approached. "hi! let me know if you need anything," she said, before turning back to look at her phone. everything was so gorgeous, but ursa was particularly drawn to a pair of cottage-core styled bee earrings. call it a bear's instinct. they showcased fat little bees surrounded by flowers and leaves, with a trail marking where the bee had been. they were too cute to pass up.
after spending far too much money in the mere 30 minutes she'd spent shopping around, ursa found herself at the edge of a park. the edge of pygmy park, the largest park in the city, named after the family of pygmy opossums that have lived here since before the city was founded. a ban had been placed on the park shortly after the city was established, ensuring no opossum would be harmed or displaced. this fostered peaceful interactions, ultimately making the opossums docile after generations.
the opossums were hiding or sleeping now though, much to ursa's disappointment. the feeling didn't last long though. a stage had been setup in the middle of the park, with a large crowd gathered in front. thankfully curiosity didn't kill the bear.
a mr. and ms. juneteenth contest was being held. children from the three nearest highschools came up one after another, showcasing their charm, talents, and dazzling outfits. even though there were two winners, it was still hard to pick a favorite from the group of 30 kids; 15 boys and 15 girls. ursa took a seat on the grass and pulled out some kebabs she had purchased earlier. what's a good show without some good food after all?
as the two hour mark neared, a groggy ursa was brought back to life as the crowd around her erupted into applause. the winners had been named! a young man, no older than 16, had impressed the judges with his poem about growing up as a biracial teenager in america today. the other winner was a young woman, likely 18 years old, who had captured everyone's attention with her regalia and performance of the fancy dance. two different art forms, two different expressions, both made in honor of the past.
the winners were ushered away towards the main square, to prepare them for the parade. a float had been made for the winners to sit on and would lead the parade through the street. ursa and the crowd followed after, speaking excitedly of how beautiful the parade was going to be. floats had been made from the nearest schools and the mayors office, banners were strung up between street lights, flags hung under windows, and people held up signs of all sorts.
at the front of the parade, drums, trumpets, and clarinets were raised in harmony before music began to pour through the streets. cheers rose to meet the noise but didn't quite reach. ursa was accustomed to loud noises and found herself lost in the thrill of it all. she cheered and screamed and clapped with everyone else, almost forgetting the heat that clung to her. she was pressed in on all sides but barely noticed. her mind was with the parade, so focused that she might as well have been in it.
when ursa returned home that night, the music still rang in her ears. the life of everyone around her still stuck to her skin. as she got ready for bed, her mind was full of all the possibilities she could do to celebrate juneteenth within her cafe, and how she could share the history of it all.
note: this entry will not be counted, i just wanted to share what i wrote c:
