Ignore my Instincts

You saw that I’m feral, that I was never bred to be a pet
I’m trying not to bite anymore
I’m trying to be good
You removed my leash of chains, I should just run but I can’t live without you now
You stole any ability I had to survive alone
I was always alone before you
I was trying to be good
It didn’t matter
You tried
But you had to leave
I was never bred to be a pet yet I’d walk by your heels
If you came back I’d never bite again

Tragedy

I always knew this was all we would ever have
I always knew it would end in tragedy
Knowing didn’t prepare me, as tragedy us struck too soon

I don’t know how I should feel
I’ve never had to grieve before
I’ve never lost anyone I needed
I’ve never lost anyone I wanted
It’s like you’re already gone
Dragged away like a rabid dog

You’re not a dog
You’re not really a human
We were wild together
A feral dog and her wolf torn apart too soon
Now we howl together, oceans apart
At the same moon

Human

I was always teeth and nails
Fur and paws
Biting anyone who got too close
Until it was you
I lost my humanity long ago
It faded away before I even noticed
I wear the mask of a woman
Underneath are my teeth
Tucking away my tail, clipping off all my fur
I can almost pass for human
But dog I will always be
You saw through my disguise
You said I was more than human
I knew I was less

Wait

You didn’t chose to leave me
You haven’t even done so yet
It doesn’t make a difference
Abandonment hurts either way
I’ll never remove my collar
Even if I’m a stray now I’ll still be your dog forever
Sitting at your door
Scratching to get in
Your scent is fading from my memory
I’ll sleep on the blanket you left for me
Waiting forever until you return
It will never happen
I still wait
Others will try to leash me, I’ll bite every one
They’ll say you ruined me
But really I ruined you
I was born to bite
I chose to bite
You simply allowed it

Choice

I wish you could have stayed
I wish we had a choice in the matter if it had to end
You didn’t chose to leave
I wish you did
At least then we would have had a choice
It wouldn’t feel like things spiralled out of our control

Remember

I see you in everything
I find you in nothing
It hurts that I don’t want to remember
Remembering is pain
You deserve to be known, to be heard
But you can’t be seen by me from here

If I wasn’t left

Take me by the lead
Muzzle me if you must
Sit, stay, heel
I’ll obey every word
A loyal companion I was intended to be
A sick mutt I was born
An aggressive hound I was made
But at your heels I’d sit
A loving dog by your side

Violent

I am a violent dog
I bite when I’m angry, I bite when I’m sad
My snarl can look like a smile
But my teeth can cut like a knife
I am a violent dog
I know exactly why I bite

Wild

You left me chained to a pole at the side of the road
Left me without my instincts
Took my teeth and cut my nails down blunt
Thinking I would be your pet forever
By the time you left I’d forgot how to be alone
Forgot fear, forgot hunger
Now I need to forget you
To be wild again, free
I used to long to be free
Now I long for your chains
Long for your voice, your touch
Wild I was meant to be
Tame you made me
