“Prince Arctic”
(This poem is written about a character from the Wings of Fire series and may be unfamiliar to those who have not read the books, specifically the prequel and the Jade Winglet arc.)
Trapped in a frozen wasteland
Knowing this wretched magic
Chained by rules and expectations
Just get me out, this tragic
Kingdom in which I’m trapped in
Forged in ice and snow
A cruel love I’ve never come to know
Within these icy walls, they’re pressing
In the bitter cold, repressing
All of my longing and despair
My beating heart just isn’t there.
Just take me anywhere but here
To a place of true, unbridled feeling
When I met you, your words, your warmth
Had left my icy heart reeling
In time, I leave, with you by my side
Flying towards the future we saw
Yet in time, I would come to find
That the ice in my heart never thawed.
The days and nights, inherently wrong
These bitter arguments, painful and long
Yet buried beneath these layers of ice
Was an ember of love, flaring higher
It might have seemed small
But it takes just one ember
To set the strongest of forests on fire.
However, by then, it was far too late
The darkness had caught up to me
I was deep within my rage, and yet
I was simply a puppet, held by its string
Condemned to a death of excruciating pain
A fate of desolation and starkness
Within the sight of the unfeeling night
And the ruthless stalker of darkness.
