The crickets that surrounded the camp chirped softly as the cool stillness of the night pressed down around the trees and bushes. The stars twinkled silently above, softly winking as yet another grave was dug into the ground with claws that ached from the sheer amount of earth that was packed beneath them. A medium sized black and white tom walked back through the camp, careful not to disturb his sleeping clanmates. A night as peaceful as this, absent of the cries and moans of the sick, was rarer than seeing a spirit from ÉtoileClan walking between the weary cats. His breath clouded in front of his muzzle and he shivered, terrified at the thought of the coming leafbare. He wasn't prepared; his stocks were low from trying to keep the ailing cats as comfortable as possible before their inevitable journey to meet their friends and family who'd gone on before them. L'eautwitch had disappeared without a sound, leaving Mistysoul distraught even in the company of her pions. Altocumuluspaw had said her goodbyes and left, unable to stay where Cumuluspaw and Cirruspaw had once walked. Soucipaw had never returned from his final assessment and was presumed dead, which caused grief among the young cavalier who'd known him best. Finally, Arbreflame had left after giving her only son up to be raised by Grincheuxsnarl and Grognoneyes only to be found dead at the border two sunrises later. It seemed like quickcough was killing just as many cats as it was running off in fear. Wolfwhiskers missed all those who were gone fiercely, especially Morningwhisper. He may have broken her heart all those moons ago, but she was still the mother of his son and he knew Rocherpebble needed her.
Finally giving up on staying away, Wolfwhiskers disappeared into the medicine den and curled tightly in his ratty nest. It was barely a nest at all, just a few leaves and moss scraps left. He'd used any moss he could find to carry water to his patients, and that included his own nest. He and the rest of ChessClan were too busy to rebuild it, so he slept as comfortably as he could in it. It took merely two blinks for him to realize he was no longer in his nest and now laying on soft grass underneath a tree. Confused, he stood up and looked around him. The coming chill of leafbare had disappeared and the sun was shining luxuriously on a field full of bright green grass that swayed ever so slightly in the breeze. Wolfwhiskers could feel his own whiskers swaying about at the same pace and the grass, and then he realized the never ending tiredness he'd come to accept as a part of himself was gone. He stretched each limb, amazed at how he couldn't feel the tenseness of his stress in his muscles anymore. Before he could begin to explore, a tortoiseshell pointed tom who was missing an eye stepped out from behind a tree and hissed. His thick fur was standing straight out and his eyes glowed with a primal rage that Wolfwhiskers had never seen before. He had, however, seen this tom before in his dreams. "Massasaugaeye! Why are you so angry?" he asked, mouth turned downward as he began to worry. Something was wrong; he needed to get out of there.
Massasaugaeye pulled himself forward as smoothly as a snake, muscles rippling like waves beneath his pelt. His eyes were flaming balls of pure anger, and his claws looked sharper than the talons of an owl. His ears were flattened against his head, and drool dripped from his thorn-sharp teeth as he growled deeply in his throat.
"They have made the worst mistake," he howled, eyes growing wilder by the second. Wolfwhiskers took a step back, bracing himself to run as Massasaugaeye approached him. "ChessClan will pay for what they've done!" Massasaugaeye threw his head back and laughed, appearing to have gone insane by the bubbling rage inside him. "You must stop the molly from giving birth! Her pions will doom you all!" Massasaugaeye seethed, peeling his lips back even further as he suddenly clamped his teeth around where Wolfwhiskers's neck had been mere seconds before. Wolfwhiskers shook his head back and forth in confusion as his mind whirled through the possibilities. "You think it's over after Lunestorm? He was a warning!" Massasaugaeye screeched and then flung himself forward, claws ripping deep into Wolfwhiskers's shoulder and pinning him to the ground. "They were only the beginning. If you do not stop it, it will grow worse than you can ever imagine. You've doomed your Clan!" Massasaugaeye's breath came in ragged gasps as he swallowed back words he so desperately wanted to spit in the fou's face. A loud clap of thunder boomed and lightning flashed, temporarily blinding Wolfwhiskers. He felt the weight of the ancient tom disappear, and his eyes regained their sight to find Massasaugaeye gone.
It was as if he'd never been there; the wounds his claws had inflicted were gone and the impressions in the grass where his paws had been weren't there either. Just as Wolfwhiskers was getting to his paws, a small flash of fur caught his attention and he whirled his head only to see nothing. "Probably just another crazy ÉtoileClan cat," he whispered to himself, shaking from the confrontation. Wolfwhiskers knew what Massasaugaeye had been referring to the entire time, and he shuddered at the thought of more cats dying to quickcough. It was a terrible way to go, and he just wanted to help. Still breathing heavily, he wandered through the foliage until he found the impression in which he'd awoken in the starry hunting grounds. He forced himself into the same position and let sleep take over his shaking body, hoping to awake back in his terrible nest in the medicine den.

Chasmstar breathed the milky scent of the nursery in before turning her attention back to her pions. She hadn't left their sides in the quarter moon they'd been alive, and she knew she wasn't about to leave them any time soon. The five of them were just so small, they needed her for everything. Purring, she curled her tail tightly around her litter and chuckled as she felt little Bouekit wake with a yawn and begin to suckle. "Mama?" a small squeak sounded from her belly, and she jumped. She lifted her feathery tail and saw Loutrekit staring up at her with dazzling blue eyes. She had been told that her pions would have blue eyes until their real eye color shone through, but she didn't want to believe that her darling daughter's eyes would change. She tried to stand, but fell over with a squeak. "Mama, help," she pleaded, her words very childish and not pronounced correctly. Chasmstar's heart melted, and she instinctually opened her mouth to call for Rookstar to come share the monumental occasion. Suddenly remembering their fight, she snapped her teeth together and fixated her attentions on her daughter. Her tiny white chin trembled as she yawned, so Chasmstar nudged her back into the warm pile of her brothers and watched as her breathing deepened into sleep.
"Where dad?" a small voice piped up from inside the pile, and Ourskit wrestled his siblings away awkwardly. He waddled up to his mother on short legs and looked around. Chasmstar knew Ourskit had probably heard the term come from Mandarinekit, Mielkit, or Neigekit, but she wasn't prepared to answer her largest pion so early on such an important question.
"He's out on a journey, sweetie. Now go back to sleep," she whispered, and Ourskit stuck a tiny pink tongue out at her. Chasmstar sighed as she pushed him back towards her belly with his nose, and she finally relaxed when he buried himself among his littermates. She hadn't expected them to be talking so early, but then she remembered the simple two word sentences they were forming. They could barely walk, and Loutrekit was only the third pion to open her eyes from the entire litter. Sighing, and breathing in the now familiar scent of her pions, Chasmstar curled herself tightly around him and began drifting off to sleep. As long as they were tucked safely at her belly, she could protect them from Rookstar's lies. She could keep them from the truth that she wasn't allowing their father near them. She could keep them safe.

Richterscreech puffed his chest out as he led the patrol along the northeastern edge of the valley. Mont Blanc loomed ominously farther west down the border, but Richterscreech was happily leading the group of six cats away from its terrifying peaks. Just as they were about to turn away from the border, a familiar scent reached his nose and he stiffened. "Lead on without me. There's tour business I must attend to," he whispered to Grincheuxsnarl. He trusted the grey-white tom to take the patrol straight back and not include any detours. He rushed across the border into a bush, purring as the scent of Skinknose. He ignored the milky scent of pions; he simply assumed she'd come to see him after giving birth to Raviolinose's pions. He pushed his cheek against hers, purring rather violently as she nuzzled him back. They may have broken things off when she had delivered Tritonpaw and Scinquepaw, but he knew he still had feelings for her hidden deep down. "Skinknose! What are you doing here?"
"Raviolinose may have died, but he lives on in these kits. I want ChessClan to have them to remember him by. He died a true death worthy of ÉtoileClan, leading those dogs away from the patrol," her voice trailed off. "I may not have loved him as much as I should, but these two little ones deserve to be raised as if their father was still here," her voice was barely audible, and she looked up at Richterscreech out of the tops of her beautiful eyes. "You'll take them, won't you? I've already named them in a way you'll like. This is Éterneumentkit and this is Poirekit," she said, first nudging a little brown mackerel tabby and then a little brown ticked tabby with startlingly green eyes. Skinknose stood in silence before tilting her head down and pushing her muzzle against Richterscreech's chest. 'I... I have something I need to say," she whispered, voice shaking as Richterscreech peered down at her.
"Let me go first," his heart warmed at how close she was after how long they'd spent apart. "Thank you for bringing Raviolinose's pions to me, to all of ChessClan really. He was such a strong tom, and you did well choosing him as your mate. I'm only sorry you two didn't have longer together," his voice trembled as tears threatened to spill down his cheeks. He wanted to exclaim his love for her right there, but he knew it wasn't a good option considering her mate had just died. Richterscreech turned to leave, but he cast one quickly glance over his shoulder. His heart fluttered like a bird, urging him to stay, but he ignored it. She loved Raviolinose.
"Richterscreech, wait," Skinknose whispered, and he turned to see her eyes filled with tears. "I never loved Raviolinose," she admitted, and hope burst into Richterscreech's chest. 'I... I think I love you," she suddenly ducked her head and scuffled her paws in the dust before Richterscreech padded up to her and placed his ear to her nose.
"I love you too," his words were so soft that they were practically carried away by the slight breeze.
"Will you be my mate?" she asked, and Richterscreech nodded quickly while swallowing his rising emotions. He knew he didn't need to ask Butterflyleap; she'd always been open about Richterscreech's sexuality. His tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth and he couldn't even speak, but words weren't needed. All that mattered was that he was standing here with his muzzle pressed to Skinknose's forehead as two of her pions tumbled around joyously at his paws.

"Oh, my dear Magnoliastar!" Balbuzardkit squealed as his littermate pulled herself to the top of a rather short tree stump. "What shall you have me, your lowly cavalier Balbuzardstrike do?" he grinned slyly, and Magnoliakit sat and appeared as if in thought for several seconds.
"Fetch me the nicest prey from the pile, Balbuzardstrike," she said loftily, lifting her muzzle into the air and looking down her short muzzle at the black and white tom. He dipped his head ceremoniously and raced off, tiny paws sending clouds of dust billowing up behind them. As Loonfrost watched her adopted son bury his nose into the fresh-kill pile to find an appropriately sized mouse, Coatiheart pressed his silvery-grey pelt against her side and purred soothingly. Balbuzardkit struggled back, dragging a mouse with his head held high, until he dropped it at the base of the stump. Magnoliakit looked down at it and nodded. "That'll do," she said somply, preparing herself to leap down and have her share.
"I remember when Mouflonpeak and Steppepaw were this little. I was dreading their ceremony even though it was still two moons away," Loonfrost sighed, leaning her head against Coatiheart's muscular shoulder. The tom may have been small and weak when he joined, but moons of cavalier duties had strengthened him to the normal size of a tom his rank. She smiled as she thought about her striped grey son who had drowned all those moons ago. "His death was tragic," she whispered, and Coatiheart turned his loving gaze towards her. "I still miss him, you know? Every day I think about him and how much he looked like his father," Loonfrost's voice trailed off as Coatiheart stiffened at the mention of Greypeak. She was about to apologize when a loud squeal dragged her attention back to the stump where Magnoliakit was holding her paw tightly against her chest.
She tipped her head back and wailed, standing frozen so as not to put her paw down. Coatiheart surged forward and pushed her to lay down with his nose. She looked up at him with a whimper, but he sighed with relief as he looked at her paw. "You've got a nasty splinter, Magnoliakit. I haven't seen one this big before," he clucked his tongue and ran his tongue soothingly across her angry red pad. "I may have to remove the entire paw unless you're brave enough to let me try and pull it out?" his voice raised in pitch, ending the sentence like a question to make it seem like it was Magnoliakit's choice to have him pull the splinter. She nodded with a soft whimper, and she unsheathed her claws as Coatiheart expertly gripped the splinter between his teeth and pulled. She barely even flinched, and he spat the small shard to the side and licked her cheek lovingly. "You'll have to avoid that stump, little one. It'll just give you more of those terrible splinters," he cautioned before returning to Loonfrost's side.
Her thoughts had wandered and she wasn't paying attention to the two littermates anymore. Wind and snow swirled in her vision as she padded into a cave and spotted a longhaired grey tom snarling playfully with his three kits. "Summitstar!" she called out, setting the leaves she had been carrying to the side as she rushed to him. Addersong was on a patrol, and these stolen moments were what she lived for. She purred as she nuzzled him, and he pressed his nose to her cheek in return. Duckkit let out a loud squeal and charged, slamming her forehead against his leg. Summitstar staggered before dramatically collapsed on the ground. He said a hwole speech before Rookkit pounced on him and urged him to die already so they could take over JaggedClan. "Now, Rookkit, why would you want to do that?" Loonfrost chuckled as she pulled the small nearly identical copy of Summitstar off of him.
    "Loonfrost?"
The molly's attention snapped back to the present, and she raised a paw to feel tears streaming down her cheeks. "Why were you calling out for Summitstar? And Rookstar isn't a kit anymore," Coatiheart said, his voice thin with grief. Loonfrost opened her mouth to explain, but Coatiheart turned away and padded up to the pions they were raising. "When you stop loving him, you can love me,"
Coatiheart said, his voice full of raw emotion as a tear began to build up in his eye. He quickly blinked to hide it, but the experienced medicine cat inside Loonfrost could see the faint trail it had left down his cheek. She could feel her heart tearing, the longing for those stolen moments in the mountains with Greypeak warring with the love she had for Coatiheart.
"Coatiheart," she called weakly, chin trembling. The grey ticked tabby turned, his eyes squinting as he tried not to show just how hurt he really was.
"No, Loonfrost. Not until you stop loving him. I don't want to believe you're fully mine to love when you still call out for him in your sleep. When you daydream about the time you spent with him. Can you not forget about him after all these moons? It's been over two season cycles, Loonfrost, so why can't you? Why can't you stop loving him so you can stop hurting me?" Coatiheart gasped as he tried not to break down, and so he turned and crouched to let Magnoliakit crawl onto his back for a badger ride. "When you're ready, you can come back to me. But not before that," he whispered as he stomped away with a terrifying growl to please his adopted daughter.

A small ginger pointed tom was squealing excitedly as he climbed across Grognoneyes's long flank. Grincheuxsnarl watched Mandarinekit lovingly before he curled himself around Grognoneyes with a purr. "I don't know how to be a father," he admitted abruptly, and Grognoneyes rolled over to stare his mate in the eyes. He flicked his ear before smiling as Mandarinekit wiggled his way up between the two.
"Just be how your father was," Grognoneyes suggested, leaning down and nuzzling his son affectionately.
"That's just it. I never met my father," Grincheuxsnarl admitted, and Grognoneyes looked confused. "My mother abandoned me when I was about two moons old, so I barely remember her either," the tom added, and Grognoneyes's eyes filled with pity. He ran his tail along his mate's flank and nuzzled his chin.
"You deserved better parents. You just have to look after Mandarinekit. Be supportive, caring, and kind. It's truly not that hard," Grognoneyes whispered so as to not wake the now sleeping pion. "You parents were just lazy fools, I promise. We'll make it through this together, Grincheuxsnarl," Grognoneyes's attention drifted to Mandarinekit as the small tom stretched and yawned. Grincheuxsnarl got to his paws and stood over Mandarinekit with an awkward smile, as if it was a face he didn't make very often.
"Mandarinekit? What would you like to do?" he asked, and the pion grinned widely.
"Badger ride!" he yelled before sinking his claws deep into Grincheuxsnarl's leg and trying to climb up. The silvery-white tom yelped in surprise, but Mandarinekit pulled himself onto Grincheuxsnarl's shoulders. "Badger ride!" he yowled triumphantly, and Grognoneyes laughed as he awkwardly stomped out through the nursery entrance. He wished for it to never end, this undying happiness he could feel in his heart. He knew he shouldn't remember Arbreflame, but he truly believed her giving Mandarinekit up was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

Tremortremble smiled as he watched Tectonicmarch dig furiously through the fresh-kill pile. Seismicwhisper was grooming himself a few fox-lengths away, and it struck the young tom about how long it'd been since the three had gone out together and had some fun. "Tectonicmarch!" he called, walking up to her with a grin. He typically wasn't one to start these adventures, but something inside him stirred him to help his littermates sneak away for the day. Tectonicmarch looked up from the prey-pile, a mouse dangling by its tail from her mouth. "Drop it. I've got an idea," he laughed, and she quickly left the small creature behind and padded up beside him. Seismicwhisper looked up from his grooming and smiled. "Follow me," he whispered into his brother's ear, and Seismicwhisper just nodded and followed along behind.
The trio left the camp behind and climbed a hill before looking down across the valley. "How about that stand over there?" Tectonicmarch asked, flicking her tail towards a group of roughly five oaks that were hugging the side of the mountains. Seismicwhisper nodded enthusiastically and Tremortremble smiled excitedly. "Let's go!" Tectonicmarch took off at a gallop, running for the trees as her brothers followed along behind her. The three crashed into the trees, landing on top of each other while laughing. Amusement sparkled in Seismicwhisper's eyes as he rolled onto his back and stared up at the sky.
"So, Seismicwhisper," Tremortremble said as he towered over his silent brother. "I saw you talking to that tom at the Gathering. Jaguarslip, was it?" he asked, and Seismicwhisper blushed before rolling over to place a paw over his muzzle. Tectonicmarch just laughed, eyes sparkling because she knew Tremortremble would tell all of the details whether Seismicwhisper wanted him to or not. "So, this Jaguarslip is really pretty. He's got rosettes, so I definitely get why Seismicwhisper is acting all shy. I mean, who wouldn't like him?" Tremortremble's smile grew into quite an evil one as Seismicwhisper's muzzle burned with embarrassment. "They chatted, well, you get what I mean," Tremortremble corrected himself as Seismicwhisper rolled his eyes. "Then the Gathering was over. I have smelled Jaguarslip's scent on Seismicwhisper's fur at least one time before, so it looks like our little brother has a boyfriend," he snickered, and Tectonicmarch nuzzled her embarrassed littermate lovingly.
"Any cat special in your life?" Tectonicmarch asked, and Tremortremble shook his head. The simplicity in which he shook his head, no emotions portrayed in the action, clued Tectonicmarch that he was being truthful.
"You?" Tremortremble immediately asked, since it seemed like every cat was going to spill their love life today. Tectonicmarch tried to be as cool as he had been, but he watched her swallow anxiously and flick her ear. "There is some cat!" Tremortremble cried, and Seismicwhisper perked up. The mute tom stomped up to his sister and pushed his muzzle into her face with a snort. Tectonicmarch's mouth gaped, confused at how bold her typically quiet littermate was acting. "I have seen you and Mouflonpeak talking a lot more often now that I think about it," Tremortremble mused, and Tectonicmarch ducked her head and gave away her secret.
"You can't tell him I like him!" she hissed, and Tremortremble just laughed. "I've been trying to get the courage to ask if he likes me but I just can't," Tectonicmarch groaned as she slid down to the ground and frowned. "No," she whispered, eyes wide as she spotted Mouflonpeak leading a patrol along the border and coming their way. Seismicwhisper's ears perked up, and he trotted out and pressed his nose to Mouflonpeak's shoulder. That was his motion for signaling a cat to follow him, so Mouflonpeak said something to his patrol and followed along until he reached the stand of trees. Tectonicmarch was avoiding his gaze, but Tremortremble nosed her closer. "Um, hi," she offered, and Mouflonpeak dug his claws into the dirt.
Tremortremble leaned over to Seismicwhisper and murmured, "He definitely likes her. Watch this." With that, Tremortremble nosd his way between the two and looked between them. "Ok, listen. Tectonicmarch likes you, Mouflonpeak. Before you say anything, I know you like her too," he laughed and then trotted off, jumping behind a bush to watch. Mouflonpeak awkwardly leaned forward to nuzzle her, and Tectonicmarch did the same. It ended with their muzzles crashing together painfully, and then Tectonicmarch ducking her head and fleeing. "That didn't go as planned," Tremortremble whispered to Seismicwhisper.

The breeze was comforting against Ottomanspire's haunches as he dragged a lump of dirty moss and leaves from inside one of the many cavalier dens. A flattened feather floated up from the mess, landing delicately on his nose, which led to him dropping the old nest and sneezing. Viperinepurr snickered as she dragged out her own dirty nest, flinging it on top of her littermate's. "We had to do this today before the mountain winds get here. We'll want newer, cozier nests for those cold nights," she commented as Ottomanspire stared at the pile of tattered bedding with disgust. He opened and closed his mouth, nodding his head side to side as he mocked Viperinepurr before sticking his tongue out at her like a pion would. "Come on, don't act like an apprenti. We're cavalier now, so we've got to act the part," Viperinepurr snapped, and Ottomanspire cringed away from her.
He knew his sister had a temper, but he loved that about her. Her temper especially would appear when she was defending any of her family. Except for Horizonstar. She hadn't particularly forgiven their mother over Reniflerpaw. The name in Ottomanspire's mind seem to make the young molly appear, and she trotted across camp before smiling at her older half-siblings. Viperinepurr growled deep in her throat, so Ottomanspire reached over and rested his tail on her spine to calm her. "Do not blame her for our mother's mistake," Ottomanspire whispered, and Viperinepurr whirled around with eyes that shone from tears.
"Don't blame her? Don't blame her! Of course not! I'm not going to blame the last of Horizonstar's kits to ever see her alive! I'm not going to blame the molly whose father is the reason our parents are dead! No, Ottomanspire, I'm not going to blame her," Viperinepurr spat, and Ottomanspire pressed his entire side against her. "Get off of me," she snarled, stepping away and bushing her pelt out. Viperinepurr swallowed back another retort before looking at Ottomanspire. "Flamingonose and his daughter are no more a part of our family than these nests are," Viperinepurr finally said before starting to walk away.
"Maybe we should give her a chance," Otomanspire called. Viperinepurr froze, and her body tensed up. "She was orphaned, just like we were. Maybe she needs a guiding paw in these times," he offered, and Viperinepurr whirled around with a snarl.
"She was not orphaned just like we were. We were raised by two loving parents. She never even met them. She doesn't feel the pain we feel, missing our parents every day of our lives. Ottomanspire, try thinking before you speak," she snorted before her eyes raked across the camp to where Ramurepaw was struggling to pick what prey she wanted to eat.
"If you don't clean up your attitude before we fully introduce ourselves to her, I'll make sure Richterscreech puts you on dirtplace duty for a full moon," Ottomanspire snapped, all warmth leaving his voice before he began dragging the two old nests towards the camp entrance.

"I think I'm ready to meet Oiseaukit," Violindapple whispered, smiling at Threeleg who was laying in the nursery. The dilute tortoiseshell molly had encouraged her best friend to finally meet her younger brother. Sopranocavern looked up from her meal and smiled warmly. "I'm sorry I never did before," Violindapple apologized, and Sopranocavern tilted her head to the side and nuzzled her daughter lovingly.
"Don't apologize, Violindapple. I know you must be scared to meet a sibling you didn't even know existed let alone ever meet," Sopranocavern soothed before looking up and across the camp. "He's currently playing with Canarikit and Lapinkit, should I call him over?" she asked, and Violindapple nodded. "Good call. Oiseaukit!" Sopranocavern raised her voice, and the young tom charged over before looking up at Violindapple curiously. "Oiseaukit, this is your sister, Violindapple," Sopranocavern introduced her young son to her older daughter with a soft smile. Oiseaukit furrowed his brow and frowned before padding forward and placing his forehead lovingly against Violindapple's leg.
"He definitely took after dad," Violindapple purred, and Sopranocavern nodded happily. "I won't ignore you anymore," Violindapple whispered before curling tightly around her brother. Oiseaukit purred happily, butting his forehead against Violindapple's chin happily. "He's so cute," Violindapple purred before rising to her paws. Sopranocavern watched happily as two of her kits raced around the camp and played together. Ever since the family was separated, she'd dreamed of seeing two of her kits getting along happily, and now her dream seemed to be coming true.

"Why did you want me to patrol with you?" Foudrewhisker groaned as his paws ached. He'd already gone hunting earlier, so he wasn't fully pleased when Soleilstripes, Crécerelleflight, and Tachesplotch had approached him and asked him to be the fourth cat on their border patrol. Soleilstripes and Crécerelleflight had their heads close together while they talked, so Tachesplotch turned her attention to Foudrewhisker and rolled her eyes. "I doubt you know either. I saw these two fur-for-brains approach you and ask you before they came and got me," Foudrewhisker chuckled lightly, and Tachesplotch actually smiled.
"I think this might get their attention," Tachesplotch whispered, and before Foudrewhisker could ask, she dashed to the nearest tree. He watched as she sank her claws deep into the bark and hauled herself up the tree trunk and out onto a dangerously thin limb. Without a second thought, she let out a scream and flung herself from the tree and towards the ground. Foudrewhisker gasped, eyes wide as Soleilstripes and Crécerelleflight turned their terrified gazes towards the falling molly. Yet, as she twisted in the air, she looked like she knew was she was doing. She pulled her legs close to her body and plummeted towards the ground. Foudrewhisker rushed to help her after she landed, but she bounced onto her paws with a grin. "Now that I have your attention, why did you invite Foudrewhisker and me on this patrol?" she asked.
"Well, Soleilstripes and I thought it was about time to let some more cats into our friend circle. You two are around our age and we've enjoyed patrols with you in the past, so we thought you two would be a nice addition," Crécerelleflight explained, and Foudrewhisker snorted. "Now, Tachepslotch, how did you do that?" Crécerelleflight asked excitedly.
"I used to be a kittypet, and I loved to climb things. I constantly sat on my twoleg's shoulder, and so they named me Polly. I fell a lot, and so I learned how to protect myself when I fell," she explained, and Foudrewhisker looked at her with newfound respect. "I will allow you three, and you three only, to call me Polly. If I hear any other cats in ChessClan calling me that, I'm coming for you," she threatened, and Soleilstripes took a step back with a worried glance.
"You said you thought it was about time to expand, so that means you didn't want other cats in earlier. What changed?" Foudrewhisker asked, and Soleilstripes drew in a shaky breath.
"There used to be three of us. My brother, Cow, used to be a part of our little group. When he died, it broke something inside of me and I told Crécerelleflight that I didn't want any more friends," Soleilstripes explained, and Crécerelleflight pressed himself against the now trembling tom's side. "It didn't feel right without him, you know?" he added, and Foudrewhisker frowned.
"Hey, we're here now. We're not leaving," Tachesplotch whispered as she and Foudrewhisker padded closer to Soleilstripes and Crécerelleflight. Foudrewhisker stayed silent, but he rested his chin on top of his newfound friend's head and sighed. He just wanted to make every cat's worries disappear.

Suiecloud watched the camp around him with a shiver. He'd never made many friends as an apprenti, and he could tell he'd made a mistake by that. Every cat had their little group except him, and he wished he'd been brave enough to open up. He spotted two newer members of ChessClan, Hérissonnespine and Noisetteblossom, chatting over by one of the cavalier dens, and he swallowed his fear before approaching them. "Hi," he said awkwardly, and Noisetteblossom looked up with a grin. She shifted to the side, and the hairless tom slid in between the two mollies. "What have you two been talking about?" he asked casually, hoping to not overstep any boundaries.
"Just the fact that Hérissonnespine here has a major crush on Archipelagoislands," Noisetteblossom chuckled, and the other molly scoffed.
"As if I'd like that feather-brained tom!" she defended, but her eyes betrayed her as they traveled over to the chocolate and white tom. Suiecloud tipped his head to the side and thought for a second before realizing he knew how to make a molly seem perfect in Archipelagoislands's eyes.
"You realize all he did was goof off as an apprenti, right?" he asked, and Hérissonnespine let out a dreamy sigh. Noisetteblossom stuck her tongue out and rolled her eyes, but Suiecloud just suppressed a laugh. "I can help him notice you, if you'd like," he offered, and Hérissonnespine smiled massively.
"I don't like any cat, but would you be willing to help when I do?" Noisetteblossom asked, and Suiecloud sighed.
"Am I just a matchmaker?" Suiecloud asked.
"Yep," Hérissonnespine and Noisetteblossom said in unison.
"Welcome to the group, Suiecloud. I can tell we're going to have a wonderful friendship," Noisetteblossom laughed.

Tritonpaw nudged Scinquepaw as the two approached the three newest apprenti. "Would you three like to spar with us?" Tritonpaw asked, and Lionceaupaw nodded eagerly. Faonpaw and Reniflerpaw seemed more hesitant, but Scinquepaw looked at them and eventually they both nodded slowly. Tritonpaw grinned before charging from the camp, his muscles screaming as he flew across the ground. He knew exactly where he wanted to go, so he pushed himself without wondering if the others were following him. He skidded to a halt, side slamming into a tree and knocking the wind right out of him. He hadn't fully perfect stopping just yet. Scinquepaw slid to a stop and panted as Lionceaupaw, Faonpaw, and Reniflerpaw all arrived. "Lionceaupaw, you're with me!" Tritonpaw called, and he immediately dropped into a crouch.
"You've trained in this. I haven't," Lionceaupaw protested, but Tritonpaw just rolled his eyes. Lionceaupaw sprang, paws wide, and Tritonpaw expertly dropped to his belly and rolled to the side to dodge. "That was smart! Can you teach me to do that?" he asked as he prowled a circle around Tritonpaw.
"Nah, let your mentor teach you," Tritonpaw grinned, realizing the advantage he held. He thought back to all his mentor had taught him, and then he jumped for Lionceaupaw. Yet, the other tom was bigger than him and was easily able to use his weight and pin Tritonpaw down. "Nice touch," Tritonpaw meowed, slightly annoyed that a less experienced apprenti had beaten him. As he turned his attention to the left, he saw Scinquepaw standing victoriously over a panting Reniflerpaw. Faonpaw cheered from the sidelines, and so Tritonpaw approached her. "Spar with me," he offered.
"Oh, no I couldn't. I'm not ready," she protested, but Tritonpaw pushed her into the makeshift training hollow. Faonpaw started to protest, but Lionceaupaw let out a cheer as Tritonpaw dropped into a hunter's crouch. Remembering the crouch, she copied and drew her body forward slowly. Without thinking, she slipped beneath Tritonpaw's belly and pushed her small body upwards. Tritonpaw was flung off-balance and tipped to the side, so she rolled to try and pin him. Reniflerpaw cheered for her, and Lionceaupaw shoved Scinquepaw from behind until she started cheering too. Tritonpaw stood triumphantly over her as she fell over, but she swept his paws out from under him and flung herself over him rather sloppily. Tritonpaw, tired from his spar with Lionceaupaw, simply went limp and let Faonpaw win.
Lionceaupaw charged over to his littermate and cried, "You did it!" Faonpaw ducked her head, and Reniflerpaw gave her a friendly lick between the ears. "We should do this again sometime," he said as he turned to Tritonpaw and Scinquepaw.
"I really enjoyed training with you three. Maybe we should talk to our mentors," Scinquepaw smiled as the five apprenti began to head back towards camp.

Bélier peered down into the valley, his long, curly fur fluttering in the wind. He could see tiny dots moving around a creek, and so he suspected a gathering of cats. He could still practically see the blood that stained his paws, and he shuddered at the thought of a settlement in which another executioner might live. "I can't. Agneau's sacrifice would mean nothing if I just became an executioner again," he whispered. He spotted a patrol coming along the edge of the mountain he was nearly at the bottom of, so he tried to duck behind a bush but a cat called out to him. Realizing he would probably become a part of this group, he sighed and revealed himself. Just because he was going to live here didn't mean he was going to have to reveal his past. It was the best for every cat if he hid all of the innocent lives he had destroyed.

Valleyrunner missed the ChessClan camp. He longed to be surrounded by his family. He yearned to hold Martinetkit, Bouvreuilkit, and Moineaukit close. Quickcough hadn't returned, but Wolfwhiskers had expressed fear for Valleyrunner's health due to his compromised immune system. Therefore, Orangeray had helped Valleyrunner move his nest to a bush in a stand of trees clear on the opposite side of the territory. Valleyrunner saw Orangeray once a day when he delivered a large piece of prey for Valleyrunner to eat on throughout the day. Soft crunching of leaves caught his attention, so Valleyrunner twisted his blind eyes towards the source of the sound. "Orangeray?" he called softly, wishing he could stand and run to see his mate. Loud pants of exhaustion reached Valleyrunner's ears, so he pushed his front paws underneath himself and pushed the front half of his body upwards. "Pipistrellecave? Where's Orangeray?" he asked, terror edging his mew.
"Dad, you're coming home," Pipistrellecave answered, and Valleyrunner's heart leaped into his throat. He could spend time with his moon old pions and be a true father to them. He grinned and began the slow process of dragging himself back to camp. He hated not being able to run and feel the wind in his fur anymore. He longed for the days when he and Orangeray had been able to leave camp behind and walk along the edge of the stream. He missed being able to stare at Orangeray's ginger and white fur, admiring the way it seemed to sparkle in the sunlight. He smiled as he felt the breeze drift across his fur, ruffling his whiskers ever so slightly. He turned his muzzle towards the sound of Pipistrellecave's pawsteps and beamed at her. He'd rarely been genuinely happy since the accident, but being able to return and see his mate and pions had lifted his spirits astronomically.
"Isn't it such a beautiful day?" he sighed, pausing to let the muscles in his front legs rest. "If you don't mind, could we stop for a second? You know how easily I get tired nowadays," he called after hearing his daughter keep walking. He stretched himself forward and rested his chin on his paws, ears swiveling as he tried to assess how close to camp they were. "Could you describe my pions to me one more time? I want to be able to see them as clearly as if I weren't blind," he smiled at the rough idea he had for each of them. He heard Pipistrellecave so she was facing him, and then her tongue rasped across his cheek. He leaned into her touch, remembering when he had been the one to take care of her.
"Well, Martinetkit is a small brown tabby bicolor. His stripes aren't straight, really, they have a bit of a wave to them. It's rather cute. White climbs his legs about halfway up and ends in a sloppy squiggle. His belly and chest are white, and so is his muzzle. Connected to his muzzle is a tiny splash of white that reaches up above his left eye. Oh! His eyes are also a beautiful yellow-green," she murmured, her voice soothing to Valleyrunner as he imagined his son. "Now, little Bouvreuilkit is definitely my favorite. She's mostly white, but the top of her head and ears are a light orange wither darker tabby stripes. On her back is one large brown tabby spot that make it seem as if she has wings. I love the way it looks, if I'm being fully honest. She's also smaller than her brothers, but she and her yellow eyes seem to be able to make them do anything she wants," Pipistrellecave's voice trailed off. Valleyrunner shifted to be closer to her and sighed. "Finally, little Moineaukit is also mostly white. The top of his head and ears are ginger with stripes, but split in half with a white stripe. His shoulders and back are also ginger and striped. He has bright green eyes and was the largest of the litter."
Valleyrunner smiled as he imagined what he thought his three pions looked like. Sighing, he pulled himself up and began making his way towards camp. "Hurry up, slowpoke. We'll never get back to camp at this rate," Valleyrunner called, his voice oddly cheery. Pipistrellecave's voice now seemed to be strained as she followed along behind his father until they entered camp. The sounds of coughing and cries of pain assaulted them from all sides, and Valleyrunner paused. "Why did you bring me back when cats are starting to get sick?" he hissed, pinning his ears back and trying to back out of camp.
"Dad, stop. It's... it's Orangeray," Pipistrellecave's voice broke, and Valleyrunner quit breathing.
"What do you mean 'it's Orangeray'?" he snarled, sightless eyes rolling in his head as he tried to scent or hear his mate. "He's fine! I know he is! Orangeray! Orangeray, I'm home!" he cried, voice already beginning to grow hoarse. He dragged himself to the middle of camp and his cries began to grow more frantic. "Orangeray! Orangeray, please! It's me, Valleyrunner! I've come to see you!" he wailed, gasping for breath as he began to grasp the severity of the situation. "Orangeray," he whimpered, slowly sinking to his belly and lashing his tail anxiously. "Pipistrellecave! Where is he?" he called to his daughter, utterly distraught. He heard her pad over to him and collapse, to weak to keep standing.
"He's in Wolfwhiskers's den," she whispered, and Valleyrunner could hear the tears in her voice. He pulled himself towards the entrance, not caring about the thorns and twigs that ripped at his fur. He just needed to get to Orangeray. The scent of sickness and death was overwhelming, but he ignored it and began sniffing at each nest. The familiar scent of Orangeray was faint, but he found him in a back corner.
"You're just in time. He doesn't have long," a soft voice whispered, and Valleyrunner jumped as he recognized the voice to belong to Wolfwhiskers. "Say your goodbyes. In his final moments he won't be able to hear you," the fou advised, and Valleyrunner felt his stomach began to tumble. He turned his attention back to the barely breathing Orangeray, and the first of the tears began to fall. Pipistrellecave was soon by his side, alongside Serotineecho. The three new pions were too young to be allowed anywhere near the medicine den, and Valleyrunner knew they would never even remember Orangeray. Making up his mind, he turned to Pipistrellecave with a watery smile.
"He's going to get better!" he declared, nearly choking on his words. His chest heaved as he gasped for breath, the tears threatening to spill like when a beaver's dam broke. Pipistrellecave stroked her tail along Valleyrunner's back in an attempt to soothe him, but his mouth twisted and he began to sob. "He's going to be fine! He's got to help me raise our pions! He's got to meet his grand-pions! I don't know how I can live without him. I thought my life was over when I joined this Clan, I never wanted to be here. He... He made me want to stay. He made me begin to enjoy my time here. When you and your littermates were born, it was the happiest day of our lives. Then Twilightpounce and her mate had their litter and we became granddads. Now we've got three tiny pions and you, Pipistrellecave, are pregnant as well as Twilightpounce having another litter of pions. I can't raise this family myself! He grounded me. I need him to be able to be there for you. I can't raise those three on my own let alone be a granddad to both you and Twilightpounce's litters. He's going to be fine!" Valleyrunner sobbed, pushing his muzzle deep into the fur that had pressed against his side in their nest every night.
"Dad, he's gone," Serotineecho whispered as Pipistrellecave let out a loud cry. Valleyrunner lifted his head and pressed his muzzle against Orangeray's dry nose, not feeling any breath stirring his whiskers. Valleyrunner couldn't stop thinking about all the times they'd given badger rides to their pions or pulled thorns from tender paws or told stories to scared apprenti to help them sleep. Orangeray had always been his better half, his best friend, and now he was gone. The tears stopping flowing, and Valleyrunner raised his wet muzzle to the sky. He knew Orangeray was up there watching him, smiling down at him and hoping he would feel better soon. Barely able to think, Valleyrunner began dragging Orangeray into the middle of camp.
"Every cat, please gather," he called weakly. Cats murmured sadly amongst themselves and approached the grieving family, but they kept their distance because they all feared the deadly Quickcough. "Orangeray was my mate. He was also my best friend. He died surrounded by his family, but I wish he could've survived long enough to be able to say something to us before he left. I don't know how... how I can carry on without him," Valleyrunner's voice grew thin, and he quickly buried his nose into his mate's fur one last time. "I'm going to miss him more than any cat could ever know. It may be time for me to continue my original plan after leaving TwistedClan to become a loner," he announced weakly, and small protests arose from the crowd.
"You can't! You promised!" Twilightpounce screamed, forcing her way to the front of the crowd as she looked at her father with pure rage. "You promised me that you would make your decision one moon after we originally joined. You chose to stay, and so we stayed. You can't go back on your word now!" her voice was raw and scratchy, but she screamed anyway. Raventalon joined her, looking at her father with utmost betrayal. "I respected that you left Crowtalon and Mountainpaw behind, and I even came to love Orangeray like he was a third father! I can't forgive you for this, dad," her voice dropped into a whisper as she turned to bury her muzzle in Juncoflight's thick chest fur. Her body trembled as she sobbed, and Valleyrunner let out a soft whimper.
"How can I stay? Tell me, Twilightpounce, how can I? Everything here will remind me of him," he protested, but he knew he didn't have the strength to leave his family behind. Twilightpounce, Raventalon, Nimbuspaw, Pipistrellecave, Serotineecho, and Gadwallkit needed him. He slid down and let his chin hit the ground as he began to truly mourn for his former mate. "Orangeray," he whimpered, body shaking as the grief rolled over him in waves. His children gathered around him, crowding him and pressing themselves against him as they all grieved for their lost family member. "Orangeray," Valleyrunner whispered once last time.

Rookstar's eyes were half-closed with every step he took. He was completely and utterly exhausted, having not slept in days because running the Clan alone while a plague had killed over twenty-five cats in three days was hard. He groaned as he entered the medicine den and sat in one corner to look over the many patients. "Has anything worked?" he asked softly, already feeling himself start to fall asleep just by sitting down. Wolfwhiskers looked up from his pile of herbs and shook his head sadly, gaze crossing the room and landing on a nest with an unmoving cat. "I'll fetch Pamplemousseeyes and Mosquitobuzz. They haven't gone on a patrol today," Rookstar called over his shoulder, but Wolfwhiskers quickly joined him outside the den. "What's wrong?" the roi asked, but Wolfwhiskers hissed.
"Not here! Too many cats could overhear. Follow me," he whispered, and then ducked out behind the dirtplace. "I was visited by Massasaugaeye in a dream last night. He said we can't let her have pions, but I have no clue what he means. So many cats have died, Rookstar. We can't stand to lose anymore cavalier," Wolfwhiskers explained, and Rookstar sucked in a sharp breath. "How many mollies are pregnant, Rookstar? It's come to the point where exiling them and their future pions could be our only option," the fou whispered, and Rookstar took a step back while angrily shaking his head.
"We can't exile a pregnant molly about to have kits! Whimbreleyes, Pipistrellecave, and Mericibubble all have mates inside the Clan that would mutiny if we tried to send them away. Wolfwhiskers, how could you suggest such a thing?! Think of Rocherpebble!" Rookstar seethed, furious at his fou's suggestion. "Imagine how you would've felt if I tried to exile Morningwhisper while she was pregnant with him, even if you weren't mates?" he snarled, and Wolfwhiskers frowned and rolled his eyes.
"That's different! This is three mollies and potentially three toms for the price of an entire Clan! It's an easy decision," the fou snapped. "I'm trying to protect my family and yours, Rookstar. I know what's going on between you and Chasmstar, but think of the pions. Think about how many families were shattered? Eclaircream and Croquembouchepuff lost their mother and siblings, leaving them completely alone. Tonnerredance lost yet another one of her kits. Valleyrunner lost the love of his life, and his pions lost their father. How many more hearts are you willing to let shatter before you do what is necessary?" the leaves around them rustled as the wind began to pick up. It was almost as if ÉtoileClan was agreeing with the angry fou.
"Wolfwhiskers! Maybe it's your own fault for not finding a cure. Maybe you're the reason so many families are now broken. Have you thought about it that way?" Rookstar hissed, the stress itching beneath his pelt.
"My fault? You think I haven't thought about it that way? You think I don't beat myself up everyday abut how I haven't tried enough options? Well, thanks, Rookstar, for having such little faith in me. If you want to doom ChessClan with your ignorance, then be my guest. You have lost all of my respect," Wolfwhiskers hissed before whirling around and stalking off.

Coatiheart smiled as he tried to hide the pain inside. Loonfrost was curled on a nest inside the nursery, keeping Magnoliakit and Balbuzardkit as close as possible during their final moons as pions. "I'm sorry," he whispered to no cat in particular before he hunched over and began coughing. His legs trembled as ears around him perked up, and he looked around him with somber eyes. "I know. I'm on my way to his den," he sighed shakily and started walking towards the opening in the ground. His legs trembled and he nearly collapsed several times until he slowly sank into a nest and wheezed. "I'm so thirsty," he whispered, mew scratchy and dry. Wolfwhiskers padded over with a balled clump of moss that was dripping, and Coatiheart lapped thirstily from it. As he closed his eyes to rest, a longhaired molly burst into the den and towered over him.
"Coatihert? Wolfwhiskers! How long does he have?" she hissed, eyes wild and terrified. The fou padded forward and said it was still early on, so he suspected Coatiheart could live for up to a quarter moon. The words sent a shudder down the ticked tabby's spine. He knew this was a death sentence, but he hadn't thought out the fact that he would no longer be a true member of ChessClan in just a few short sunrises. "That... that can't be. He's so strong!" Loonfrost cried, but Coatiheart just lifted his muzzle and looked at her. "He looks so lost," she whispered, and then she fully turned to him.
"I'm so tired, Loonfrost, so tired. Just let me go peacefully," he pleaded, but the molly shook her head furiously.
"I let one tom go and it still haunts me. I still love him and dream of him still being by my side. I'm not making that mistake again," she growled and padded back into the stores. Wolfwhiskers protested loudly, but she returned with a heavy dose of catmint. "Eat this. Now. I know it can hurt in large doses but this should be just below the mark," she explained as she pushed it forward with a paw. "I've got to try to save you. Not only will it break my heart when you die, it would utterly destroy me to know I didn't even try to save you," she hissed. "ÉtoileClan can protest for all they want, but I'm going to try and heal just one more cat."
Coatiheart began to cry as he unwillingly ate the catmint. "There's no point, Loonfrost. I'm a dead cat walking," he whispered, and she shook her head so violently that her ears quivered.
"Stop it! Just stop it! I need this, Coatiheart! At least let me try to help! Can't you tell how much this hurts? Being helpless and watching one of the toms I love die right in front of me?" she screamed, furious. "You're not dead yet, right? Right! Let's run away! We can spend your final sunrises together, away from all this sickness. Doesn't that sound nice?" she wailed, tears streaming down her face in a zig-zag position. Coatiheart reached up with a paw and flicked a tear away from her nose with a shaky purr.
"You know we can't do that, Loonfrost. I told you I wasn't going to love you until you let go of Greypeak, but I just can't help myself," he paused to draw in a breath as snot began to form at nose. He was on the verge of tears, but he was trying to hold them back. "Will you stay with me? Until it... until it happens?" he said, beginning to choke on his words. Loonfrost sniffled and nodded, quickly curling herself around him. Wolfwhiskers walked forward and shook his head, but Coatiheart bared his teeth. "Please, Wolfwhiskers. It seems like we're all going to die from this quickcough so what's the harm?" he sighed, head trembling and words barely just noise added to a breath. He was just so tired, and he let his eyes close.
As his eyes opened, all tiredness and sickness was gone, and he stepped away from his body. He had been so willing to go that ÉtoileClan had saved him from the terrible ending most cats with quickcough received. He watched Loonfrost pushed her muzzle against his neck and sobbed. "I'm right here!" he cried, but of course Loonfrost couldn't hear him. He watched as she screamed, pinning her ears back and letting all her frustration and grief out in one long howl of pure agony. "Please, Loonfrost, you don't have to do this!" he cried as she stormed from the medicine den. She was bent on her rage, and she exploded into the main section of camp. Coatiheart gasped for breath as she barreled head-first into the stream.
She sat in the middle and her head fell forward, shoulders hunching, as she watched the water rush over her paws. "Loonfrost, please," he called weakly, and she let out another scream. She screamed and she screamed, each one quieter than the last until she was trembling and whimpering in the stream. "Please don't cry," he whispered, shocked by Loonfrost's reaction to his death. Mouflonpeak stood helplessly on the bank of the stream, and Rookstar and Juncoflight stood protectively behind him. Behind Rookstar was Freuxfreckle and behind Juncoflight was Twilightpounce, Raventalon, and Nimbuspaw. "All these cats love you, dear. Turn to them and not your grief," he whispered directly into her ear, and she turned to see the cats watching her.
Rookstar led the charge into the stream and pushed himself against her while murmuring words of condolences. Juncoflight wrapped herself around her and Mouflonpeak nuzzled his mother affectionately. "They love you, my dear. More than I ever could have. I am so sorry I was so stuck on your memories of Greypeak that I didn't realize just how much we needed each other. If only I could tell you," he sighed and lifted his muzzle.
"Coatiheart?" Loonfrost called softly, and he turned to see her staring directly at him. "You... you really mean that?" she asked, teary eyes full of hope.
"Oh, of course," he said with a sob. He rushed forward and tried to lean his forehead against hers but he fell right through her. "Loonfrost, I can't leave you. I can't go to ÉtoileClan," he breathed heavily, jaw hanging open as he watched the family. A tail brushed against his flank and Patisseriedew stepped up beside him. He turned to see all the cats who had died from quickcough gathered on the bank of the stream, and Patisseriedew pressed her nose to his shoulder. He could see Macaroncrumb, Croissantcrunch, Morningwhisper, Brouillardheart, Lunestorm, all of them. There were just so many.
"It's time, Coatiheart. You have to leave her behind," Patisseriedew soothed, but Coatiheart just turned away from her.
"Leave me here. I want to watch her, make sure she's okay. I want to watch Magnoliakit and Balbuzardkit grow up and start families of their own. I'll come when she joins me," he mewed, and Patisseriedew just nodded.
"Are you sure?" she asked, waiting for confirmation before leaving.
    "Yes. I'm staying behind."

Pluvierkit wandered among the mounds of dirt, tears rolling down his face as he came to grasp the term that was death. "They're never coming back? Like mama?" he asked, lifting his tiny muzzle and looking at Freuxfreckle. His father stood rigid and stared at the graves, eyes haunted. "Dada? Are you okay?" Pluvierkit squeaked. Freuxfreckle snapped back to reality and looked down at his son and nodded. He scooped Pluvierkit closer with a paw and nuzzled him affectionately. "Am I going to be okay?" Pluvierkit asked, eyes wide as he looked deep into Freuxfreckle's eyes. The cavalier looked down and hugged the pion close, a small tear rolling down his nose and falling onto Pluvierkit's head.
"I don't know," Freuxfreckle whispered. "I'm not sure if either of us will be okay, Pluvierkit. You're old enough to know the truth, so here it is. A disease is killing cats. We don't know how to treat it, and any symptoms are a death sentence. You have to stay away from sick cats, son. You have to promise me you'll stay away from sick cats," he whispered, and Pluvierkit nodded before nuzzling his father's leg. The truth sank into Pluvierkit's mind and he shuddered. He didn't want Freuxfreckle to leave like Goosenose had, and he realized a sickness could just as easily take him.
"We need to move away," Pluvierkit announced, but Freuxfreckle shook his head.
"I'm healthy, thank ÉtoileClan, so I'm needed. We have to stay in camp," the tom explained, so Pluvierkit pouted.
"Promise me you'll be safe?" the kit asked, and Freuxfreckle nodded.
    "I promise, son."

Dusk light was just settling across the camp like a blanket and the crickets were beginning their cacophonous melody as a small black and white tom crossed the stand of trees and disappeared into a hole in the ground. Mere moments later, he reemerged with a large black and white tom that he favored at his side. They ducked their heads close together and whispered as they casually strolled along the bank of the stream and away from camp. Crickets chorused around them, masking their soft voices until they were far enough away to be able to speak without being heard. Both toms sat facing each other, and the smaller flicked his ear and cleared his throat as he prepared to speak.
"Dad, I need help with a molly," Rocherpebble admitted sheepishly, and Wolfwhiskers chuckled breathily. "It's... well... it's Viperinepurr. She's so bristly and protective and I don't what to do to approach her. I've never even spoken to her!" Rocherpebble barked out a laugh as if he couldn't believe he was admitting his crush to his father in the middle of the night. Wolfwhiskers rolled his eyes and then looked over his shoulder in the direction of camp. "I think it started when we were apprenti. She was older than me, but something about her was so captivating. Now that we're both cavalier, becoming mates is a real possibility but I don't know how to become her friend first," the cavalier sighed and looked up at his father.
"Well, invite her on a patrol. That's always the start of a lovely friendship. Listen, by starting as friends, you can still have gained a friend even if she rejects you when you eventually ask her," Wolfwhiskers advised, and Rocherpebble nodded silently. "I wish you the best, son. I can't wait until I can be a grandfather. I promise I'll be there," he chuckled, and Rocherpebble stiffened at the soft joke about his father having avoided him through most of his time as a pion and apprenti. "Now that we've discussed your crush, can we talk about me for a few minutes?"
"Of course, dad. I'd never withhold that from you," Rocherpebble soothed before leaning forward and nuzzling his father affectionately. They may have only recently got to know each other, but they had become almost best friends in the past few moons.
Wolfwhiskers drew in a shaky breath and let his eyes fall to the ground before the words tumbled from his mouth. "I can't stand being the fou and not being able to help. It hurts so much, Rocherpebble, watching my clanmates die. I can name every single cat that has passed from quickcough because their names and faces are engrained on my brain. I see their unseeing eyes and hear their howls for water in my sleep, and I'm so afraid to close my eyes. I want to run but I know it would just make everything worse," Wolfwhiskers hunched over, but Rocherpebble scooted closer and draped his fluffy tail across his father's tail.
"I can't imagine what you're going through, dad, but you need to know I'm here for you. We have only recently found each other, and we don't need to lose sight of that. You can come to me with anything, okay? I'm here for you," he purred and pushed his head underneath his father's chin. Wolfwhiskers sniffled softly before leaning against his son.
"I didn't think losing your mother would be so hard, even if we weren't mates and hated each other's guts. Her death hurt more than the others, even if I know I don't love her. Something about having pions together binds cats in a way you don't understand," Wolfwhiskers admitted, and Rocherpebble sucked in a sharp breath.
"I miss her too, dad. Promise me something," Rocherpebble leaned away from Wolfwhiskers and stared him in the eye. "Promise me that you're not going to shut me out again. I need you and you need me, it's clear to see," Rocherpebble paused, and Wolfwhiskers nodded as he blinked away tears of joy.
"I'm sorry I ever ignored you. I was a stupid young tom who was too caught up in the fact that he didn't really love the molly he had pions with," the fou admitted, and then he turned his muzzle to the stream. "I'd better be getting back to camp for my moon-high rounds. You coming?" he asked.
"I think I'm going to stay here and talk to mom for a bit," Rocherpebble whispered, eyes locking on the rippling reflection of the moon in the stream. Wolfwhiskers nodded and padded off, leaving his son as he heard a soft, "Morningwhisper?"

Faonpaw, Lionceaupaw, Reniflerpaw, Tritonpaw, and Scinquepaw splashed through the stream with cries of laughter. Faonpaw collapsed on her side, and Tritonpaw pushed his muzzle beneath the younger molly's side and helped her back to her paws. Scinquepaw and Reniflerpaw snickered as they watched him stare after Faonpaw after she bounced up to wade alongside her littermate. "Some tom's got a crush," Scinquepaw sang as she trotted in a circle around her own littermate. Reniflerpaw giggled as she looked between Faonpaw and Tritonpaw. "Why don't you go ask her out so you can go be a couple?" Scinquepaw teased, and the ginger ticked tabby tom ducked his head to hide his reddening face.
Faonpaw paused and turned around before innocently wading up to Tritonpaw and looking at him. "Are you okay?" she asked simply, and Tritonpaw looked up at her with wide eyes. He nodded awkwardly, and so Faonpaw offered him a smile before swiping her paw across the surface of the stream and splashing him with cold water. He straightened with a shriek before charging forward and knocking her fully into the water. Lionceaupaw turned around to defend his sister, but Reniflerpaw pushed him back and leaned up to whisper in his ear.
"Tritonpaw has a crush on your sister," she murmured, and Lionceaupaw narrowed his eyes. He shouldered Reniflerpaw aside and pushed his muzzle into Tritonpaw's face. He snarled and then dunked the older tom beneath the water without a single word. Tritonpaw crashed to the surface spluttering, glaring as his pelt hung from his sides and dripped cold water back into the stream. Scinquepaw let out a battle cry before latching herself onto Lionceaupaw's back and dragging him into the water with her. Reniflerpaw laughed, but Faonpaw surged up from beneath her and knocked her off her paws. All five apprenti were soaking wet, and they all sat up and laughed. Tritonpaw scooted closer to Faonpaw and began grooming her ears, murmuring something about catching a cold.
Lionceaupaw snorted as he led Faonpaw out of the stream and began licking her fur the wrong way. "Thank you!" she purred sweetly, and Lionceaupaw simply grunted as he shivered. Faonpaw pulled away from him and began warming her larger brother up, smiling the entire time. "You don't have to be so rude to Tritonpaw. He's such a great friend," Faonpaw murmured, and the tom flinched at the word. Tritonpaw let out a hiss and stalked over to his own sister while muttering something about friendship. Lionceaupaw thanked ÉtoileClan for Faonpaw's obliviousness and turned back to his sister.
"I'm worried about Sweethen," she whispered. Lionceaupaw tipped his head to the side, and the other three apprenti padded up behind him. "She took it rather hard when Coatiheart passed because Loonfrost is her friend. She's refusing to leave Loonfrost's side, and Loonfrost is refusing to leave Coatiheart's grave. I don't want her to get sick," Faonpaw's voice trailed off as the fact that her reaction would be worse than Loonfrost's if Sweethen died. Lionceaupaw leaned forward and pressed his nose to her ear and purred.
"Sweethen is strong, we know this. She won't get sick, Faonapaw, I promise," he whispered, and Tritonpaw padded up to sit beside her.
"Even if she did, we'd all be right here for you," Tritonpaw murmured, and Faonpaw flinched away from him. He realized he hadn't said the right thing, so he stepped away and shook his head angrily. Faonpaw blinked and smiled at him.
"Thanks. I mean it. I don't know how I'd be right now if it weren't for you four," she whispered as the five cats huddled together before heading back to camp.

Ciguëpaw crested the hill over camp, and she gasped when she saw how many cats were lying in nests in the middle of camp. She padded through the entrance, but Rookstar pushed her right back out. "By the power invested in me by ÉtoileClan, I name you Ciguëblizzard," he said in a hurry, and the molly was then given her cavalier name. "I'm sorry for the informality, but a terrible sickness has gripped ChessClan in its claws and I have something I need you to see," he whispered, leading the way to where Ciguëblizzard could see so many freshly dug graves. Rookstar padded up between two and sat down, hanging his head in shame. "These are Fauconflight and Blaireauface's," he whispered, and Ciguëblizzard flattened her ears. "Fauconflight led a pack of dogs away from a patrol with Ravioliose and bravely died to save his clanmates. Blaireauface recently passed from quickcough," the roi explained and then padded away to let the young molly have time to grieve.
Ciguëblizzard gasped for breath as she realized she was alone again. After being separated from them mere moons after birth, and then being reunited inside ChessClan, she had lost them again. "No," she whispered, pinning her ears back and gasping for breath. She recognized the scent of Canetonwaddle, and she watched as two toms padded up with him draped across their backs. Her best friend since she was a pion was now being buried beside her parents, and she could barely breathe. She needed to get away from there, as far from there as she could possibly be. Without thinking, she ran to the familiar border and collapsed as she reached the edge of the cove that Twigsnap had taken her to last time. She gasped as tears rushed down her face, memories and images of her family and friend rushing across her eyes as she tried to push them out.
"Out!" she cried. "Out! Out! Out!" she pawed at her head, trying to force the images away to deny the fact that they were really dead. As she tried to curl into a ball and block the memories with her tail, a branch cracked as another cat entered the cove.
"Ciguëpaw? I thought I heard you in here. What's wrong?" Twigsnap whispered as she rushed to Ciguëblizzard's side. Not caring to correct her, Ciguëblizzard rolled over and buried her face into Twigsnap's chest and let out a loud sob. "What happened?" Twigsnap asked again as she looked down at Ciguëblizzard.
"They're gone. My parents. Canetonwaddle. All dead," Ciguëblizzard choked out, and Twigsnap gasped before holding the other molly close. "I came back from my final assessment and Rookstar was acting all weird. He named me Ciguëblizzard and took me to my parents' graves. While I was sitting there, they buried Canetonwaddle right beside me," she whispered, eyes haunted as she remembered returning and expecting a glorious celebration of her accomplishments only to be greeted with death.
"Hush, Ciguëblizzard. Let's not talk about that any more," Twigsnap whispered and then laid down on her back beside her. Ciguëblizzard twisted and felt her pelt brush against Twigsnap's, but she didn't bother to move away. The touch felt nice as they stared at the sky in silence.
"I'm sorry you had to see me like this," Ciguëblizzard muttered sadly.
"Nonsense. Every cat grieves, and every cat grieves differently. Yours just happens to be violent," Twigsnap said with a light chuckle. Ciguëblizzard felt a small smile creep across her lips, but the effort to hold it was just too much so she let a frown fall across her muzzle. She simply continued staring at the sky while she felt Twigsnap pressed against her side and breathed in her comforting scent.

Richterscreech stood stiffly as he watched Tremortremble be buried. His entire family stood around the grave, and he breathed through clenched teeth as he tried to remain strong for his son. "Tremortremble was the best of us," he began, and he heard Butterflyleap dissolve into whimpering sobs. He curled his tail around his mate and held her close as he took a deep breath before continuing. "He was kind, he was strong, he was loyal, he was everything I ever wanted to be in a cat. It may have been ÉtoileClan's wish that he join their ranks so early, but it surely wasn't mine. He will be missed more than her could ever know," Richterscreec finished, and he stepped aside to comfort his mate while Tectonicmarch and Seismicwhisper stepped forward. Tear stains marked both their faces, but neither were still crying.
"Tremortremble was our brother. He was our littermate. He always gave me the gossip from Seismicwhisper's life, and then he would badger the gossip of my own life out of me for his and Seismicwhisper's entertainment. I don't know what life is going to be like without him. We were three peas in a pod, and now we're missing one of the three. It won't ever be the same, and I don't know how long it will take to heal," Tectonicmarch paused as Seismicwhisper pressed himself against her. Her lip trembled, and she breathed deeply through her nose to calm herself. "I... I can't do this," Tectonicmarch whispered as she ducked her head and fled the scene, Seismicwhisper running after her to soothe her. Richterscreech looked at Tritonpaw and Scinquepaw, who both barely knew their older brother, and then at Poirekit and Éterneumentkit. They were both barely a moon old, so of course they wouldn't know Tremortremble.
He wished Nuitpaw and Tacheterpaw were here, but they were both on their final assessment and would have to return to find their half-brother dead. Richterscreech curled himself around Butterflyleap and nuzzled her as she whimpered. "My baby. My baby," she cried softly, distraught as she stared at the freshly dug grave. Richterscreech helped her to her paws and led the way back to camp. There would be time to grieve later, time he needed worse than any cat he suspected, but first he had tour duties that needed doing. He left all four of his kits with Butterflyleap as he assigned patrols, eyes constantly flicking back to his mate. She needed him, so he left Freuxfreckle in charge and left to be with her.

Acaipaw rested his head on Quinoapaw’s shoulder as they stood at the mouth of the Northern Pass. “These next steps will change our lives forever,” he whispered to his sister, and she shuddered. “I don’t even want to think about the fact that we could easily die in the next few moons,” his voice was merely a breath being forced from his mouth as fear gripped him fiercely in its talons. He opened his mouth to say something else, but Quinoapaw quickly pushed her paw in front of his nose to quieten him. She was trembling, and it wasn’t from the cold. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled, knowing his habit of speaking his mind even when it harmed others. Taking a deep breath, he stepped forward and let out a scream as something cracked beneath his paw. He didn’t have time to look down before his eyes were watching cliff walls rush past him as he hurtled downwards. His mouth was open in a silent scream, and he could see Quinoapaw leaning over the newly opened chasm.
“Acaipaw!” she shrieked, but the sound was like a whisper compared to the noise of wind in his ears. He twisted and turned, legs splayed as he tried to position himself to land with as little damage as possible. Seconds lengthened into minutes, and minutes lengthened into hours as the ground grew closer and closer. Acaipaw squeezed his eyes shut and felt his entire soul leaving his body as he slammed into the ground. His vision went dark as sharp, blinding pain flashed through his leg and then left it feeling numb. His vision swam, and he tried to pull his eyelids apart, but the darkness was crushing him fast. Gasping one last time, his grip on consciousness left him as quickly as the snow beneath his paws had.

Rookstar could feel the breeze swelling as he peered across the hills in the direction of a patrol. Chasmstar was still holed up in the nursery, refusing to leave in fear of Quickcough. Shuddering, he watched as Richterscreech inspected the prey the hunting patrol had brought back. It was meager, but it was enough to keep the fresh-kill pile full. Richterscrech had been an admirable tour the past three moons, certainly performing as well as Freuxfreckle had, but Rookstar couldn’t shake the feeling of wrongness in seeing his former mate on patrols with other cavalier instead of organizing them. Stunned by the direction of his thoughts, the roi approached Richterscreech with a frown. “I’m not so sure I made the right choice three moons ago,” he whispered, and Richterscreech let out a soft sigh before turning away from the patrol.
“No, Rookstar, you didn’t. Freuxfreckle didn’t want to lie to Chasmstar anymore, and he tried to convince you to reveal the truth. Your selfishness blinded you from the right thing to do, so you tried to keep your two mates separate when you needed to bring them together and talk about everything. You were heartbroken by Chasmstar’s statement of never allowing you to see your pions, and that was replaced by rage at the tom who you thought caused it. Yet, Freuxfreckle wasn’t the reason Chasmstar did what she did. You were. So, demote me back to cavalier and bring Freuxfreckle back up. It’s what he deserves,” Richterscreech explained, though Rookstar could see his eyes bouncing around the camp as he kept track of his numerous family members. Biting his tongue, Rookstar shook his head and stared at the ground.
“I’m not ready to admit I made a mistake, yet, Richterscreech. I will be soon, but not yet. Can you stay as my tour until then?” he asked, voice trembling, and Richterscreech stepped forward and placed a paw beneath the young roi’s chin.
“It would be my honor, Rookstar. It’s the least I owe to your father since he allowed me to join JaggedClan, and it’s the least I owe to you since you were the best apprenti I could ever have,” Richterscreech purred with a smile, and Rookstar nuzzled his former mentor affectionately. It was times like these that it was evident that the bond between mentor and apprenti was never really broken, just changed over time.

The cold dawn washed over the camp, causing many tired cats to pull themselves out of their warm nests and into the frosty camp. Juncoflight was like the others, slowly stretching each limb before grooming her pelt and then reporting to the High Stump. Richterscreech licked his chest, smoothing down his sleep ruffled fur and looking out among the crowd of cats that had gathered around him for the day’s patrol assignments. Juncoflight’s limbs were stiff, but she simply sat with her head bowed and her fur fluffed out. “Juncoflight,” Richterscreech called, but the molly didn’t even move. “I want you to stay in camp today,” he said, leaping down from the High Stump and padding across to her.
“Why? I can patrol and hunt just as good as any other cat, especially in Leafbare,” she hissed, tail thrashing as she dug her claws into the frozen ground.
“You brought back a feather yesterday, Juncoflight. You’re too distracted by your grief,” Richterscreech whispered, eyes shining with tears. She could tell his thoughts had wandered to his own son’s death. “I know how hard it is, losing two of your pions and then watching your other leave the Clan, but Nimbuspaw should be home any day now. Besides, Twilightpounce needs your help with Gadwallkit,” Richterscreech’s voice was kind and soft, gentle against Juncoflight’s ears as she tracked pebbles across the ground. She scratched absentmindedly at her side before rising to her paws and walking slowly across camp.
The nursery was warm as she entered it, but her eyes still stayed down until she sat in a mossy nest next to her mate. “This is a welcome surprise,” Twilightpounce purred, leaning up and rubbing her cheek on Juncoflight’s chest. Gadwallkit lay curled at her belly, not moving except for the faint rise and fall of his chest. “I could use the company, you know,” Twilightpounce tried again, and Juncoflight let her gaze drift to her new son.
“How is he doing? I know Wolfwhiskers wasn’t too pleased with his progress yesterday,” she said, her voice thick with sorrow.
“Not much better, I’m afraid. Wolfwhiskers did manage to find some feverfew and catmint the other day, and he says it’s going to be the turning point for his health,” Twilightpounce forced her voice to sound cheery for Juncoflight’s sake, but she quickly let the charade drop when she saw her mate’s face. “Hey, listen. Cumuluspaw and Cirruspaw are in ÉtoileClan watching over you, my sweet. Altocumuluspaw is off in another Clan, living the kind of life she never could have here. Nimbuspaw is returning any day now, and we’ll have our first pion as a cavalier. Can’t you be excited for his sake?” Twilightpounce watched as Juncoflight slumped to her belly and rested her chin on her paws.
“I don’t want any more pions,” Juncoflight whispered, and Twilightpounce shook her head before looking at Gadwallkit’s weak body. “I can’t take the grief, Twilightpounce. It hurts so much, I don’t know how I can carry on without them,” her voice shook as she buried her nose in Twilightpounce’s pelt. Twilightpounce swallowed before draping her tail across Juncoflight’s flank and pushed Gadwallkit towards her.
“He needs you, Juncoflight. He needs his other mother. It doesn’t matter if we don’t have any more after him, but he’s here right in front of you. Please?” Twilightpounce’s voice grew higher pitched as she pleaded with the black striped molly. “Think about when Nimbuspaw is going to have pions of his own. Then we’ll be grandmothers, and wouldn’t that be nice?” she purred softly, and Juncoflight shook her head rather quickly.
“I don’t want him to ever have pions. I don’t want him to ever feel what I’m feeling, and I can at least keep this from him,” Juncoflight spat before her face softened and she licked her sick son’s forehead. “Have you been keeping him cool? Maybe letting him lay outside the stuffy nursery could help with his fever,” she mused softly, and Twilightpounce’s face brightened as she saw the grief slowly begin to leave Juncoflight. The two mollies rose, one carrying Gadwallkit, and they curled into a pile right outside the nursery entrance. Gadwallkit wasn’t tucked as tightly between them so that he could receive his fair share of the cool air in an attempt to cool his temperature.
“See, this is why I need you. I would never have thought to bring him out here and let nature cool his temperature instead of relying solely on herbs,” Twilightpounce’s face was radiant with her joy, yet Juncoflight’s was still shrouded with sadness.
“How can you be so happy?” she asked, her mood souring.
“Gadwallkit is getting better, so that’s a reason to celebrate. Nimbuspaw is going to receive his cavalier name soon, so that’s another reason. Cumuluspaw and Cirruspaw are spending their days playing, and Altocumuluspaw is off doing what is best for her. I know it’s not the best circumstances, but there are bright sides that you have failed to see,” Twilightpounce explained, gently setting her smaller paw on top of Juncoflight’s.
“I don’t know,” Juncoflight whispered, her thick fur beginning to flutter.
“You know how beautiful I think you are when the breeze and lighting are just right,” Twilightpounce sighed, her head tilting to the side as she stared at her mate. “I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for this moment,” she added, and Juncoflight peered at her out of the tops of her eyes. “It’s true! These small moments where I am astounded by your beauty are some of my favorites,” she purred, and Juncoflight snorted in amusement.
“I doubt it, but I’ll let it slide,” she chucked, and Twilightpounce placed her forehead gently against hers. She let out a soft sigh, watching her breath curl up in a cloud and circle around Juncoflight’s ears before disappearing into the air around them.

Butterflyleap trembled as she draped herself across the patch of earth underneath which laid Tremortremble. Small shoots of grass were sprouting, giving a patchy covering to the fresh grave. “Sweetheart, you’re going to catch a cold,” came a gentle voice from behind. Butterflyleap turned her head to see Richterscreech sitting to the side with his tail wrapped neatly around his paws. “Come on, let’s go before the sun finishes going down,” he sighed, turning his gaze to the brilliant sunset. The sky burned with hues of golden, orange, coral, and violet, a soft gradient mixing the colors nicely towards the horizon.
“I think I’ll stay out here tonight,” Butterflyleap’s mouth gaped open in a yawn, her small yet sharp teeth glinting in the dying sunlight. She stood, bringing the center of her back straight up in a tight curve before she settled into a sitting position with her front paws on the edge of Tremortremble’s final resting place.
“Butterflyleap, you know you can’t. Wolfwhiskers is on my tail about making you sleep in your nest after the past three nights you spent out here. We don’t want you to catch a cold,” Richterscreech draped his tail across hers, leaning his shoulder against hers. Butterflyleap drew in a shaky breath before she turned her eyes towards Richterscreech.
“Can we have another litter?” she whispered, eyes bright and hopeful and pleading.
“You’re grieving for Tremortremble, my sweet, and you think another litter will replace the hole his death left in your heart. You’re wrong, it’ll just make it worse. I don’t think we should have a litter for a few moons,” he mumbled, and Butterflyleap jerked away from him like he had hurt her.
“Our first litter are warriors, and the only pions we’re raising are Raviolinose’s. By the time I have another litter, even they’ll be old enough to be nearly apprenti. I want to be a mother again,” she cried, pinning her ears to her head and glaring at Richterscreech. “It is not the grief talking! Trust me! I’ve been thinking about this since before Tremortremble died, and yes, his death solidified it that I wanted another litter with you!” she snarled, the fur along her spine spiking.
“My word is final, Butterflyleap!” Richterscreech snapped, eyes blazing with rage. “I don’t want our other pions to feel like we’re trying to replace Tremortremble! No matter how much we say it isn’t, it will always feel like we did just that unless we wait! You’re still grieving your mother, and now I’ve got to take news to Celestial Beings that Feathereyes’s mother is dead as well! I need time to think, Butterflyleap. I lost cats too!” he screeched, panting for breath after he finished. Butterflyleap’s expression was hurt, and she turned away from him.
“I’m staying out here for the night, Richterscreech. I will see you at the High Stump for assignments tomorrow,” she snapped coldly, eyes trained on her own paws. Richterscreech opened his mouth as if to say something, but he just turned around and stalked away before he could dig himself deeper into the hole.

Valleyrunner stretched his upper body, reaching as far forward with his front paws as he could before bringing himself into a semi-sitting position. He felt the gritty dust beneath his paws, and he yawned as he shivered from the cold. “Valleyrunner! Valleyrunner, Pipistrellecave’s gone into labor!” Wolfwhiskers called as he hurried past, and the tom stiffened. His daughter was about to kit in the middle of Leafbare, and he wasn’t pleased. He pulled himself across the clearing and stopped himself at the nursery entrance.
“I’m sorry, Valleyrunner, but you can’t go in,” Whimbreleyes murmured sweetly, and he spat at her paws aggressively.
“I’m going in to be with my daughter!” he hissed, pushing Whimbreleyes aside with a paw. He could tell she had angled her own muzzle towards him from the breath he could feel on his shoulder. “Pipistrellecave! I’m not leaving your side,” he whispered as he reached her nest and settledin beside her. “I want to be the first to meet my grand-pions since ÉtoileClan decided to take their father into their ranks too early.”

“You are officially healed, Gannetsong!” Wolfwhiskers announced, and Bébéecho cheered from the edge of the den. It was still filled with the thick scent of sickness and death, but the joyous news destroyed any thoughts Gannetsong had about the past few moons. “Why don’t you give your daughter a celebratory badger ride around camp?” the fou purred, clearly pleased with his healing expertise. Gannetsong stretched his formerly broken limb experimentally, not surprised at the stiffness from minimal movement for several moons. However, there was no pain lingering, and he could practically leap with joy.
He stood up and nearly stumbled, his muscles weak from disuse, but he made his way over Bébéecho and nuzzled her lovingly. “I can’t wait to show Neigekit my leg without the stick and bindweed all over it,” he chuckled, and Bébéecho purred fiercely as she licked his cheek. Gannetsong led the charge to the nursery, bursting in and circled around a bouncing Neigekit. “Look! Dad finally got his stick and bindweed off!” he purred, and Neigekit sniffed his leg curiously. She wrinkled her nose as the herby smell, but then she beamed up at her father.
“Badger ride time!” she cried, bouncing on her small paws and nearly hitting the top of her head on Gannetsong’s chin. Bébéecho chuckled as she led the family into the main section of camp, watching Gannetsong crouch down and let his identical daughter climb excitedly on his back. He stumbled a few times, but he stomped theatrically around the camp before collapsing on his side and nearly crushing Neigekit beneath him. She giggled loudly, her laughter infectious to Bébéecho as the mother crossed the clearing and groomed the dirt from her daughter’s formerly pristine white pelt.
“That was so much fun,” Gannetsong sighed, continuing to stretch his leg without really noticing it. “I remember the day I broke it, and I’m not sure I really want to. There was so much pain,” his voice trailed off as he looked up at the sky and watched the clouds march across the sky. “Let’s not talk about that day. How about we give Neigekit her first swimming lesson?” his blue eyes sparkled as he rolled over and nuzzled his small daughter affectionately. Bébéecho opened her mouth to protest, the water was far too cold for her tastes, but Gannetsong just laughed.
“Are you absolutely sure?” she stretched her claws, worried about Neigekit catching a cold.
“She’ll be fine, because I’m getting in with her,” Gannetsong promised, and the father-daughter duo padded over to the side of the lazy stream. He set one paw in, and immediately jerked it back out. “I can feel icicles growing on my claws! ÉtoileClan, that’s cold!” he hissed, and Bébéecho laughed. “Don’t say it,” he warned, but Bébéecho stuck her small pink tongue out at him.
“I told you so,” she wrinkled her nose, and Gannetsong swiped his paw across the top of the stream. Droplets of cold water landed on Bébéecho’s muzzle and whiskers, and she shook her head and laughed as Neigekit shivered from the droplets that sprayed her. “Let’s go back in, now. It’s time for Neigekit’s nap,” she sighed, watching as her daughter frowned and protested. “No ifs, ands, or buts, little molly. Get your tail into our nest,” she laughed as Neigekit stuck her tongue out much like Bébéecho had done earlier.
“She’s your daughter,” Gannetsong whispered, and Bébéecho rammed her shoulder against his.

Archipelagoislands paused as he entered the nursery, the realization that he hadn’t been in here since he was a pion himself hitting him. Mistysoul was curled around her daughter, cooing at her grandpions and dangling her tail over their heads like it was a toy she was allowing them to bat at. He cleared his throat, and Mistysoul nuzzled her daughter before dipping her head to her son and leaving. “Archi, is that you?” Whimbreleyes called, and he sat down at the edge of her nest.
“It’s me, Whimbreleyes,” he mumbled, shuffling his paws awkwardly as he stared at the five tiny pions. They stared up at him with large eyes, small toothy grins, and fluffed out pelts. “Would you introduce them to me?” he asked softly, and Whimbreleyes chuckled.
“Of course. This is Lumièrekit. She’s named after Lumièreblink,” she paused to sniff her pions before placing her paw gently in front of the one she recognized as Lumièrekit. She did the same process for each and named them off as Minuitkit, Cygnekit, Cygognekit, and Gruekit. “Minuitkit was named after Minuitpelt. Both cats weren’t well known, but they deserve some recognition, since no cat seems to be mourning them,” Whimbreleyes explained, and Archipelagoislands.
“Only my sister would be so kind as to name her pions after cats other than their father,” he chuckled, gently placing the tip of his claw on Cygnekit’s nose. “I’ll be the best uncle ever,” he quickly mewed before turning to leave as if embarrassed.
“Would you really?” Whimbreleyes called. “They need a father figure since Araignéepounce can’t be here for them, and it would be amazing if you would be it,” her voice was watery with tears, and Archipelagoislands turned to see his sister crying. “I miss him so much, she whimpered, and Archipelagoislands quickly nuzzled his sister as she started to sob.
“I can’t imagine what it’s like, losing your mate. I know Twilightpounce has been nursing your litter for you, leaving you more time to think. I’m not going to leave your side until these pions are apprenti,” he promised. “I don’t have a mate to distract me,” he added with a laugh, and Whimbreleyes’s shoulders shook with her giggle.
“It might not be too long before you have a mate to distract you, as you call it,” she whispered, and Archipelagoislands scoffed. “No! I see the way Hérissonnespine looks at you,” she whispered, pointing her muzzle towards the mention she-cat’s nest.
“No! She’s in love with whoever the father of her pions is,” Archipelagoislands protested.
“Yeah right! Every other minute she says it was a mistake that she met with him in the first place. Rumor has it, it was a loner tom she met at the Gathering,” Archipelagoislands laughed at his sister’s nose for gossip. Shaking his head, he batted gently at one of his nephews and watched as his nieces charged to protect him. “I couldn’t ask for a better litter,” Whimbreleyes sighed softly.

Ramurepaw burst out of the Northern Pass and threw back her head and yowled with joy. Her heart was racing as Nimbuspaw reached one side and Nuitpaw reached the other. “We’re almost home!” she panted, her excitement stealing her breath. Her paws itched to run, and she could feel the wind beckoning her to follow the wish of her paws. “Last one back to camp is the last one to get their name!” she cried, suddenly bolting forward. Her slender yet muscular legs stretched farther and farther apart, her paws barely touching the ground as she skimmed across the grass.
She lifted her muzzle into the wind and her muscles began to burn. Not ready to slow down, she pushed herself harder and felt her pull another whisker ahead of the toms. Nimbuspaw was right on her tail, and Nuitpaw lagging slightly behind the curly furred tom. As she peered across the territory, she spotted the familiar stand of trees and felt her heart fling itself into her throat. She was almost home, almost back to her normal life. Nimbuspaw’s shoulder was now equal with hers, Nuitpaw even farther behind than before. One last burst of energy sent her barreling into camp and rolling onto her side with a laugh.
Her spine slammed into the nursery, and the squeals of new pions filled her ears as they screamed about foxes, badgers, and rogues. She rolled onto her back, laughing as her tongue rolled out of her mouth like a dog. “We did it!” she cried towards the sky, grinning as Nimbuspaw stood over her and stared down at her. Ramurepaw pulled herself to her paws and saw Nuitpaw rushing to Tacheterpaw’s side and then towards Richterscreech. Nimbuspaw gasped and charged for Juncoflight, Twilightpounce, and a new pion between them.
Ramurepaw realized she didn’t have anybody to congratulate her about returning, and her eyes fell to the ground as she slumped into a sitting position. “Ramurepaw! You’re back!” Zéphyrpaw flung herself at the older apprenti she had always idolized. Ramurepaw laughed and rubbed her pawpad on Zéphyrpaw’s head before turning to where Rookstar was standing on top of the High Stump. He nodded to her, and she joined Nimbuspaw and Nuitpaw at the base.
“We gather here today for the naming of new cavalier. These three apprenti have completed the customary journey through the Northern Pass, and we raise them to ÉtoileClan to receive their cavalier name as a gift for their bravery and skill. Nimbuspaw, from this day forward you will be known as Nimbusrain for your cool yet refreshing personality. ChessClan congratulates you on becoming a full cavalier,” Rookstar leaned down and pressed his nose to Nimbusrain’s smiling at his nephew. Juncoflight called his name once before catching a look from Rookstar that told her to wait.
“Nuitpaw, from this day forward you will be known as Nuitpelt in honor of your other father. Richterscreech knows about his bravery, as do you. I know you will live up to the name. ChessClan congratulates you on become a full cavalier,” Rookstar leaned down and pressed his nose to Nuitpelt’s. Richterscreech rushed forward and guided his son towards the crowd, but he held back to stand beside Nimbusrain and Ramurepaw. Dipping his head in understanding, Richterscreech returned to his seat and raised his gaze to Rookstar’s.
“Ramurepaw, from this day forward you will be known as Ramurefrost for your swiftness and strength. Quinoapaw and Acaipaw may not be here to congratulate you like your other two friends are, but know they will be returning in a few short moons and you can watch them in their own naming ceremony. ChessClan congratulates you on becoming a full cavalier,” he reached down and pressed his nose to Ramurefrost’s with a wink. With that, the cries went up among the Clan.
    “Nimbusrain! Nuitpelt! Ramurefrost!”
Tachesplotch snuck a glance out of the side of her eye as she creeped across the border that separated BearClan from ChessClan. She could smell the herby scent of Bumbleflight on the edge of the border, so she leaped from bush to bush until she spotted his ginger and grey striped pelt hunched over a patch of frost-covered plants. Grinning, Tachesplotch sunk her claws deep into the bark of the tree next to her and pulled herself up paw-step by paw-step. She stepped out gently along a branch directly over Bumbleflight, sinking her claws in deep before she took a deep breath.
Her body spun around, her claws and paw pads digging deep into the sturdy branch. Her muzzle was a mouse-length from Bumbleflight’s as he looked up in surprise. “Boo!” she laughed, slithering down off of the branch and onto the ground. Bumbleflight shook his head at her, eyes full os surprise. “I know, I know, I’m like a squirrel!” Tachesplotch chirped happily. His mouth gaped, and he didn’t seem to have any words for Tachesplotch’s extraordinary entrance.
“How?” he asked, and Tachesplotch picked a small leaf off of her shoulder with her teeth.
“Practice, strong claws, and a lot of failed attempts,” she admitted, remembering the many times she’d fallen from the tree in her old twoleg’s yard. “How’s life treating you?” she asked, eyes bright as she spotted several movements across the ground.
“Well enough as leafbare can, I guess,” Bumbleflight said, still slightly stunned. Tachesplotch looked up through the branches and wrinkled her upper lip.
“Looks like I’ve got to go early. I promised Foudrewhisker and Crécerelleflight I’d go on the sundown patrol with them,” she began walking off and then looked over her shoulder. She winked at Bumbleflight before dashing off towards her own Clan.

Freuxfreckle puffed out his chest as he led Pluvierkit, Cendrekit, Grebèkit, and Collerettekit towards the High Stump. “ChessClan, we are gathered today to celebrate the beginning of four young pions’ training,” Rookstar called, and the four cats previously chosen to mentor the pions stepped forward. “Mistysoul, your kindness is a match for Cendrekit’s quietness. I trust that you will be gentle and patient and coax the skill out of Cendrepaw,” Rookstar purred as the grey and white molly touched her nose to her new apprenti’s forehead.
“Raventalon, your determination is what is needed to tame the lively Grebèkit. I trust that you will be able to calm the young molly and teach her using your excellent mind,” Rookstar paused as Raventalon led Grebèpaw from the circle towards the camp entrance.
“Butterflyleap, I know you are grieving, but your gentle nature is perfect for Collerettekit’s fiery personality. He has a harsh tongue, but I know you can cool his temper and turn him into an excellent cavalier,” Butterflyleap nodded before pressing her nose quickly to Collerettepaw, who shot a glare at the roi. Butterflyleap whispered something, and the two followed the direction Mistysoul and Raventalon had taken.
“No matter how much it pains me to say so, Freuxfreckle, your brilliant mind is a match for Pluvierkit’s eagerness to learn. I trust that despite your fatherly relationship, you will be impartial and fair for Pluvierpaw’s training,” Rookstar grimaced and turned away, Freuxfreckle’s heart breaking as he saw just how clear Rookstar was making it that he hadn’t forgiven him. Freuxfreckle quickly pressed his nose to Pluvierpaw’s forehead and sighed.
“Come on, kit. It’s time I show you the territory,” he sighed, Pluvierpaw bouncing happily at his paws.

Rookstar could feel eyes staring into his back, and he whirled around to land nose-to-nose with Freuxfreckle. “What do you want,” he spat, curling his lip back in disgust. “Shouldn’t you be out training your apprenti like a good little cavalier?” the roi taunted, and Freuxfreckle shied away from him, pinning his ears back and staring down at the ground. Rookstar struggled to keep his rage-filled face up and not let the swarming sympathy and sadness overflow. “Well? Spit it out!” he growled, raking his claws across the ground and pushing his muzzle into Freuxfreckle’s face rudely.
“I’m sorry!” Freuxfreckle cried out, his rear falling to the ground as he hung his head in shame. “I’m sorry, alright? I shouldn’t have told Chasmstar,” he whispered, shoulders hunched as tears spilled down his muzzle. They gathered on his nose and then dropped silently to the ground below, forming a small puddle in the dust. “I miss you, Rookstar,” he gasped, looking up with eyes full of anguish. “I need you, more than I ever thought I did. What I did was stupid and ignorant, and I shouldn’t have done it,” his voice shook with tears and emotion, and Rookstar could feel his fur beginning to lie flat.
“I’m not mad anymore,” he whispered, sliding his paw beneath Freuxfreckle’s chin and lifting it to look him in the eyes. “I mean, I was. I was furious because Chasmstar still won’t let me see my pions. But you were right, okay? You were right. I shouldn’t have hidden it from her, and it just hurt me in the end,” Rookstar whispered, nuzzling Freuxfreckle as tears bubbled in his own eyes. “Is there any way you can ever love me again?” the roi whispered, his voice raw and begging.
“I never stopped loving you, Rookstar,” Freuxfreckle forced out, his throat blocked with emotion. The two toms stood with their cheeks together, breathing in each others scents as they remembered their time together before the feud. “I don’t want to be your tour anymore. I want to stay as a cavalier until I’m done training Pluvierpaw. He deserves my full attention, not half of my mind while the other half is still stuck on the Clan,” Freuxfreckle explained, and Rookstar nodded.
“Richterscreech agreed to stay as tour until you were ready to return,” Rookstar looked down at the ground and ran a paw across the spattering of teardrops in the dust. “Does this mean you want to be mates again?” he asked, voice barely audible above the wind that had picked up.
“Of course, featherbrain. Maybe we can even have pions of our own since your foxhearted former mate won’t let you see yours,” Freuxfreckle offered, but Rookstar shook his head violently.
“I don’t want any more pions. I don’t want my current ones to think I replaced them once they figure out I’m their father. It would break their hearts, trust me, I know. It broke my heart to see my father choose Loonfrost over my mother,” Rookstar chuckled, and Freuxfreckle looked at him in confusion. “My father was Jaggedstar of SummitClan. My mother was Addersong, the deputy of the Clan. Loonfrost was our medicine cat. Well, my father always loved Loonfrost, but he took my mother as his mate because Loonfrost was the medicine cat. When the Clan broke apart, I chose to follow Loonfrost and Juncoflight because my mother and father were in a fight. I sometimes regret it, you know?”
“Of course I know. Every cat regrets decisions they’ve made,” Freuxfreckle whispered, resting his chin atop Rookstar’s head.
“Well, soon I found out that Loonfrost was pregnant with my father’s pions. Mouflonpeak was one of them, and she also had another who unfortunately drowned a long time ago. Juncoflight turned to Loonfrost, declaring she should have been the mother we never had. You see, we were raised by Loonfrost because dad always wished she was our mother and forced Addersong back into her deputy duties rather early on. I don’t know who my mother is at this point, because dad did love Loonfrost, but Addersong gave birth to me,” Rookstar drew in a shaky breath before finishing. “I don’t want my own pions to feel that way.”
Freuxfreckle draped his tail across Rookstar’s flank and nuzzled him. “I understand. Maybe in the future, after you’ve patched things with them, we can revisit the topic. Besides, I don’t need pions right now anyway. I’ve got my paws full with Pluvierpaw,” he chuckled and stood to greet his apprenti. Rookstar pressed his nose to Freuxfreckle’s in a farewell, and then turned back to his nest.
“Crowfood-eating fox-heart!” Chasmstar spat under her breath as her pions tumbled around her paws in an excited bundle. Chênekit and Castorkit had been in ÉtoileClan for nearly two moons, and Rookstar hadn’t come to her to apologize. “How could he not want part in his pions lives?” she whispered, making sure Bouekit, Ourskit, and Loutrekit were all fine as one let out a wail. “He’ll pay for his stupidity,” she growled, digging her claws into the soft dirt beneath her.

Mistysoul was curled tightly around Whimbreleyes, her pions, and Archipelagoislands. The family wasn’t small anymore, and she suspected it would grow with Hérissonnespine’s own pions soon. Mistysoul knew the molly had had a small fling with a tom at the Gathering, but she could see the looks she and Archipelagoislands gave when they thought no other cat was looking. Sighing, Mistysoul let her tongue rasp across Whimbreleyes’s forehead and purred, laughing as Lumièrekit stumbled over one of her brothers. “She’s half blind, mother. You know she can’t always see all of them,” Whimbreleyes purred, pulling her daughter close.
“I know, I know. It was still funny because Gruekit’s little tongue popped out when she fell over him,” Mistysoul’s whiskers twitched at the sight, heart yearning for Hurricanepaw and Aloekit. She remembered the horror at hearing the snapping branches and seeing a familiar pelt falling through the tree as soon as she realized where he was. Her eyes glazed over, and Archipelagoislands reached out with a paw and rested it on hers. “I’m sorry,” she muttered with a shake of her head. “I just wish Hurricanepaw and Aloekit were here to see this. I still can’t believe I have grandpions, and another litter coming soon,” she said with a purr.
“I-I’m not having pions!” Archipelagoislands’s cheeks burned and he stuttered in embarrassment. Mistysoul rolled her eyes and nuzzled her son before looking around the nursery.
“Have either of you noticed Eclaircream in here? I said she was welcome to come visit, since she grew up with you two and just lost her family,” Mistysoul’s voice was filled with concern as she realized she hadn’t seen Eclaircream in days. “The patrol swore she would return in a few days after she was captured. They said cats always do,” she whispered, but Archipelagoislands shook his head.
“I wouldn’t expect her to come back, mother,” he soothed. “She probably became a kittypet. You know how heartbroken she was to lose her four family members, especially Croquembouchepuff. The change of scenery will do her some good,” he said with a soft smile, but Mistysoul frowned. “Trust me, mother. She’s better off in the care of a twoleg than being surrounded by haunting memories in camp,” he tried again, and Whimbreleyes leaned against her mother’s thick gray fur.
“She didn’t deserve what she got. I hope she has a good life, no matter how much I despise kittypets,” Mistysoul murmured before turning back to her grandpions. “Now, lets take these little monsters outside and let them run around,” she stood up and stretched her legs before herding the five pions towards the entrance. “Eclaircream will be missed,” she smiled weakly before padding out after Whimbreleyes and Archipelagoislands.

“Fourmisplash, care to join me on a patrol?” Pamplemousseeyes called from across the camp. The longhaired tom pricked his ears and tore his eyes away from the camp entrance and nodded slowly. He padded up to his friend and frowned, gaze drifting back towards the edge of the camp. “Stop worrying about Acaipaw, Fourmisplash. It’s not even leafbare yet, so he’ll be fine. I promise,” Pamplemousseeyes meowed as they began walking along the stream.
“I just can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong. He could be hurt and need my help. Can I please go to the Northern Pass and try to find him?” Fourmisplash’s eyes were wide and he looked up at the taller tom. Pamplemousseeyes shook his head and frowned.
“You know that’s not allowed, Fourmisplash. You think I’m not terrified about sending my own daughter into the mountains in just a few moons? If you promise to stay home, then I’ll promise to not sneak off and keep Aloèspaw safe,” Pamplemousseeyes sighed, stretching his long legs and looking across the stream. Fourmisplash hung his head, but he still stared at the northern border.
“Cover for me, I can’t stand it,” he spat, stalking off. Pamplemousseeyes caught up to him and opened his mouth, but Fourmisplash pushed his tail into his mouth. “Don’t even try to talk me out of it, Pamplemousseeyes. I’m going, and you can’t stop me,” he snarled, his steps harsh and loud as he stormed towards the Northern Pass.
“I was going to say that I’m not letting you go alone,” Pamplemousseeyes snapped. “But, if you don’t want my help,” he moved to turn around.
“Please!” Fourmisplash cried out. “Come with me. I may need your help if he’s hurt,” he mumbled, as if angry at having to need help from his friend. Pamplemousseeyes smirked, and the two toms turned back towards the large, towering mountain.

Loonfrost’s soft cries filled the cavalier den, where she had moved after Balbuzardpaw and Magnoliapaw’s apprenti ceremonies. She kept her snotty muzzled buried under her paw, but her teary eyes watched every cat who entered and exited the den with hatred. “Why do they get happiness when all I get is grief,” she whimpered, tearing up again and letting out another wail. The soft sound of pawsteps alerted her, and she turned her head to see Versaillesheart storming into the den with a scowl.
“Get your tail out of that nest. We’re going on a patrol,” she snapped, and then left the den with a flick of her tail. Loonfrost sniffed and followed her, paw and tail dragging. “Loonfrost! Hurry up! We haven’t got all day for your sorry tail,” Versaillesheart snarled, her lip curling in disgust as she looked at the molly’s ungroomed fur. “I get that you’re grieving, but it’s time you snap out of it. You’re an asset to this Clan, and we need you,” Versaillesheart’s voice softened as the two mollies exited the camp.
“I can’t go on without him,” Loonfrost murmured. “I see him everywhere, and I still hear his voice. It’s as bad as it was leaving Greypeak behind,” her eyes frosted over as her thoughts traveled to the fateful day on the mountain. “I’ve lost both the toms I’ve loved and one of my sons. Balbuzardpaw, Magnoliapaw, and Mouflonpeak don’t need me anymore,” she whispered, and a soft breeze whipped up aruond her. Versaillesheart slammed her paw into the ground and scowled.
“You don’t need a tom to live! You need friends, and it’s your lucky day in that department. Versaillesheart, your new best friend,” she saw, holding out her paw in a mimic of what she saw twolegs do when they first started talking. “I know Horizonstar and Sweethen have always been who you’re closest to, but Horizonstar is dead and Sweethen is still mooning over that tom. So here I am,” Versaillesheart finished simply, but Loonfrost shook her head.
“Accept it, Loonfrost,” came a gentle voice, and the molly whirled around with a cry to see Coatiheart smiling at her. She rushed at him with a cry, but her muzzle passed right through his form. She gasped at the icy cold feeling inside of her, but Coatiheart just smiled. “I’m still watching you, my love. I chose to stay behind until you join me. I’ll always be by your side, but you need to move past this grief. Take Versaillesheart’s offer. I can see she’ll take care of you,” he murmured, eyes soft and full of love.
“I can’t just forget you that easily,” Loonfrost choked out, but Coatiheart took a step back.
“I’m not asking you to! Please, don’t forget me Loonfrost. What I’m asking is that you stop mourning me and instead return to caring for your family and friends,” he smiled before beginning to disappear. “It takes too much strength to stay visible for long. I’ll see you in your dreams,” he whispered, pressing his icy cold nose to Loonfrost’s forehead before he was gone.
    “So?” Versaillesheart prompted.
“Thank you,” Loonfrost murmured, stretching out to press her cheek to Versaillesheart’s. “So, may I ask why you’ve never taken a mate or had pions?” she asked as the two she-cats began walking again.
“I’ve never been interested in any cat that way, and I was taken to the cutter as a young kitten and they took my ability to have pions. I’ve never really wanted a family, anyway,” she said with a shrug, and Loonfrost gasped.
“You’ve never known true love until you look down at tiny bundles that need you for everything,” Loonfrost protested lightly, but Versaillesheart shook her head.
“It’s moments like these that I feel true love, Loonfrost. The moments I share in simple conversation with my friends are my favorite,” she smiled, and then reached back and pressed her nose to a back leg. “I’ve always been called special for this heart on my leg, cats saying I trust and love to easily. Sometimes I think it’s true, but it’s not the type of love they know of. You only recognize the love of friendship once a cat brings your attention to it. Mericibubble did that for me many moons ago, and now it’s my turn to show it to you,” she offered. Loonfrost smiled and then looked at the sky.
“It’s not too close to sundown, so let’s keep walking?” she ended her statement more like a question, and Versaillesheart just nodded. As they strolled towards the border, Versaillesheart brought up a story about meeting dogs while leaving the twolegplace she once lived in.

“They’re so perfect,” Flûtesong breathed as he stood over the three tiny bundles. Little Clarinettekit had been buried just hours ago, but all grief and sadness over losing his son escaped the tom as he watched his two daughters and other son fight to eat. “Piccolokit’s pelt is unlike any I’ve ever seen,” he whispered, not wanting to wake any of the sleeping méres and pions. Mericibubble turned her tired muzzle up to her mate and then glanced back down at the three little ones wrestling at her belly.
“Ocarinakit and Pianokit seem to be as thick as thieves, but Piccolokit looks like she’s already trying to make friends,” she chuckled, reaching out with a gentle paw and pulling her adventurous daughter away from the edge of the nest. Piccolokit let out a wail, but it was quickly stifled with a yawn. “Looks like miss adventure is already tired,” Mericibubble sighed, resting her chin on her paws and refusing to look away.
“Will they always be this small?” Flûtesong asked, and Mericibubble had to muffle a laugh.
“Of course not! They’ll grow as big as Pluiedrop’s pions in no time,” she reminded her mate, and Flûtesong shook his head. “No, there isn’t a way you can keep them this little forever, no matter how much you may want to,” she smiled, as if reading his mind. Flûtesong dangled a paw over Ocarinakit and nearly giggled as she reached up with her tiny paws and latched on to one of his toes with her tiny claws. “A little hunter in the making,” Mericibubble noted, and then jumped as she felt something at her neck.
She twisted her head and saw Pianokit curled in a tight little ball in the curve where her neck met her chest. The tiny tom let out a sigh and quickly fell asleep, and she smiled. “I think I might just do the same,” she whispered, curling her neck around him and letting her eyes flutter closed. Flûtesong knew she was exhausted, but he didn’t dare lay down and sleep next to her. He sat straight and stiff, only bending down to nudge one of his daughters the other way when they traveled too far from their mother.
Flûtesong was not about to let any of his pions get hurt, so he stood watch over them throughout the night until his own eyes began to feel heavy. Worried of their wandering, he draped himself around the other edge of the nest and trapped Piccolokit, Ocarinakit, and Pianokit between his and Mericibubble’s bellies. He let out a content sigh as Piccolokit draped herself across one of his front paws, and then he let his eyes flutter shut.

Wolfwhiskers searched anxiously through his herb store, frantic in search of what he needed. Cielkit was barely hanging on by a thread in the nursery, Pipistrellecave screaming in terror at the thought of losing her son. He flattened his ears and swarmed from the medicine den, nearly tackling Rocherpebble in his frenzy. “Dad! I can’t find any in the territory, except these,” he whispered, and small crumbles of frostbitten leaves fluttered to the ground at his paws.
“What do you mean you can’t find the leaves?” Pipistrellecave whimpered softly from the nursery entrance. Cielkit lay at her paws, gasping for air but not really succeeding. His chest rose and fell quickly, but it wasn’t as high as it should. He let out a tiny cough and then lay still, but Rocherpebble pushed Pipistrellecave away from the pion before she could realize what had happened. Wolfwhiskers crouched over the tiny pion and tried to push tansy at his tiny muzzle, knowing it wouldn’t do any good.
“I’m sorry, Pipistrellecave, but Cielkit is dead.”
Pipistrellecave’s legs gave a weak wobble and then she collapsed onto her belly. She dragged herself ungracefully across the ground and buried her nose into her son’s thin kit fluff. She lifted her eyes, and Wolfwhiskers immediately saw the intense rage all méres who lost a pion had. He took a step back, and Rocherpebble placed himself between the molly and his father. Pipistrellecave rose to her paws and curled her lip back in a snarl before flinging herself at Rocherpebble. “Let me shred him! Let me feel his pelt come apart at my claws! Let him feel what my son felt in his final moments! You deserve the same fate!” she shrieked, snarling and biting at Rocherpebble. The tom may have been small, but he was muscular from moons of hard training.
“She’s right, Rocherpebble. I lost another cat,” Wolfwhiskers hung his head in shame. His son whirled around and held Pipistrellecave to the ground with a hind paw.
“Don’t do this again! I need you, dad. I can’t lose you again,” Rocherpebble gasped, barely able to control his emotions. “You’re all I have left. One kit that was too sickly to survive doesn’t define you, and neither does the other cats. You have no control over life and death, because we all know the stars decide our fates before we’re even born,” Rocherpebble forced his muzzle into the fou’s face. Pipistrellecave had gone limp under his pw and was whimpering as she held Cielkit close.
“I need to comfort a grieving mother, now. Will you take Cielkit?” Wolfwhiskers’s asked with a shaky breath. Rocherpebble nodded and watched his father guide Pipistrellecave towards the nursery.

Suiecloud frowned as he padded up to Archipelagoislands, watching the tom stare at Hérissonnespine as she crossed to the medicine den for her daily check in. “Boo,” Suiecloud laughed as Archipelagoislands shot straight into the air with fluffed out fur. The chocolate and white tom whirled around and glared at the hairless tom, but he soon relaxed and his gaze returned to Hérissonnespine who was making her way back to the nursery. “Can you not stare at her for, like, ten seconds?” Suiecloud groaned.
“Sorry,” Archipelagoislands apologized, having to tear his eyes away from the molly to look at Suiecloud. “She’s just so pretty, but I know that she probably is head over paws for whoever the father of her pions are,” he sighed, sinking into a sitting position. Suiecloud scoffed, and then he looked around the camp and noted that Noisetteblossom was heading to talk to Hérissonnespine in the nursery.
“I’ll give it to you plain and simple. Hérissonnespine doesn’t love the father of her pions, she loves you. She’s asked me to try and help her get you to love her back, but I’m tired of seeing you both give each other moon eyes. So get your tail into the nursery and confess your love in some grand gesture or whatever,” Suiecloud licked the back of his paw and drew it over one of his ears.
“She loves me?” Archipelagoislands repeated, as if he couldn’t quite believe it. Suiecloud gave him one short nod and then watched as the chocolate and white tome leaped to his paws and galloped across the camp. He pushed Noisetteblossom out of his way, who quickly walked over to Suiecloud and sat down beside her friend.
“You told him?” she asked, and Suiecloud just nodded. Noisetteblossom chuckled as Archipelagoislands flung himself into the main section of camp and threw his head back and yowled. “I take it it went well,” she noted, beginning to groom her fur. Suiecloud chuckled softly as he watched the tom disappear back into the nursery to protect Hérissonnespine until she had her pions. “I still don’t like any cat, but I don’t exactly think it’s a bad thing. I know Raventalon and Versaillesheart both are aroace, and I’ve been talking with them,” Noisetteblossom remarked.
“That’s a good move. I’m not so sure about a mate myself, but it’s not so much that I don’t like any cats more than I’m just not ready to take that step just yet,” Suiecloud said as he lifted his muzzle to stare at the clouds. Noisetteblossom nodded, and then let out a sigh.
“Every cat seems to just be so in love right now that I feel out of place,” she whispered, and Suiecloud turned to look at her.
“You’re not. You’ve got me, and you’ve also got Hérissonnespine. We won’t let the fact that you aren’t going to take a mate make you any different than any other cat. You’re my friend, and that’s all that matters,” he said with a smile, and Noisetteblossom ducked her head.
“I really needed that,” she whispered.

Richterscreech crested the hill and smelled the strong border scent of the Celestial Beings. Respectfully, he stood on his side until a patrol found him. “I need to speak with Feathereyes. It’s about her mother,” he said somberly, and the patrol quickly directed him towards the camp. As he entered, the molly got to her paws and rushed towards him.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered, head hanging. “There was an attack and Acaciapaw didn’t make it through. I can take you to her grave, if you’d like,” she trembled as she relayed the message, and Richterscreech sucked in a sharp breath. How could he deliver the news of her mother’s death when she was obviously still grieving over her daughter? Before he could open his mouth to reply, Feathereyes pulled a tom over. “Will you fetch Birchpaw, Hickorypaw, and Willowpaw? I’d like for them to meet their father,” she asked, and the tom nodded before disappearing. “They’ll be so excited to see you, trust me,” she said with a weak smile.
“I’m not here for just a casual visit, I’m afraid,” Richterscreech whispered, and Feathereyes looked at him with confusion. “There was disease in ChessClan. We lost many members, and one of those members happened to be Thistleheart. I’m so sorry,” Richterscreech watched as horror filled Feathereyes’s expression. He turned to see what she was staring at, and he saw three apprentice-aged cats frozen in their walk towards him.
“Grandma’s dead?” one whispered, and Feathereyes nodded.
“Richterscreech, I’d like you to meet Birchpaw, Hickorypaw, and Willowpaw,” Feathereyes choked out, barely able to think past the news that her mother was really gone this time. Richterscreech turned to greet his kits, and had to hide the sorrow in his face.
“It’s very nice to meet you three. I wish it could have been under better circumstances,” he whispered, and the three nodded. Two of them leaned their heads close together as they began to cry, but the other just stood stiffly. “You can cry if you want,” Richterscreech offered, knowing how good it felt to cry when you lost a cat in your family.
“I’m not that sad,” she said simply, her expression steely. Richterscreech looked between Feathereyes and Willowpaw, confused, but he could see the bristling of her pelt.
“You actually got to meet Thistleheart, right?” he asked softly, and Willowpaw nodded sharply. “She was such a mean old she-cat, you know? She hated me,” he said, offering a light smile.
“She was not mean!” Willowpaw spat, her voice beginning to break. “She was sweet and kind and I actually really enjoyed meeting her!” she then stalked off with her tail high. Richterscreech turned to Feathereyes, and then felt a tear roll down his cheek.
“I think I’d like to see Acaciapaw’s grave now,” he whispered.

Béliercurl stalked across the camp, as silent as stone. He sat in the back corner and quickly groomed his curly fur, hating how dust clumped in it so easily. Spitting the dirt from his mouth, he lifted his head to nearly bump his nose into Tourbillonpelt’s. “What do you want?” he asked shortly, voice sharp and choppy. Tourbillonpelt shrugged and sat down beside Béliercurl before grooming his own pelt. “I suggest leaving,” the curly-furred tom said coldly, but Tourbillonpelt shook his head.
“I wanted to ask about your eyes,” he asked, and Béliercurl lifted his upper lip in anger. His teeth shone in the dying light of day, but Tourbillonpelt didn’t seem unsettled. “Don’t, it won’t work on me. I’ve been around Grincheuxsnarl and Grognoneyes for long enough that your sour attitude won’t hurt me,” the munchkin tom laughed before lifting his muzzle to look at Béliercurl again. “So, what about your eyes?” he asked again.
“I was owned by a twoleg who liked to breed for rare genetics, but I escaped when I was very young. That’s the most of my past you’ll ever get from me,” he clamped his teeth together to emphasize that he was done talking about the topic. Tourbillonpelt just nodded along and then smiled.
“My twoleg was like that too. Why else do you think I’ve got these short legs?” he laughed at his joke, but quietened as he realized that Béliercurl wasn’t laughing. “So, why did you leave the group of cats you were with before?” he asked, and Béliercurl’s jaw dropped. “You think I’m feather-brained enough to not smell the faint scent of lots of cats on you when you first arrived? Was it a Clan?” he prompted, but Béliercurl kept his muzzle sealed.
“I don’t like to talk about my past. I came to ChessClan for a new start, so that chapter of my life is sealed to all eyes and ears. Yes, including my own. Now can you please stop bringing it up?” Béliercurl snapped, and Tourbillonpelt didn’t even flinch.
“It was nice talking to you!” he called as he padded away, but Béliercurl just snarled.
    “No it wasn’t.”
