Silas was always different from the other kids.
He never actually enjoyed the games they played at recess; he
never understood why the game of 'tag' was even appealing.
While the other nagalines played, Silas would think of the many
ways he could manipulate the other nagalines to give him some
of their candy, or what tricks he could play to make a girl fall in
love with him. Long story short, Silas was a thinker who wanted
to use his skills to try and get people to do things for him. Did it
ever work? Unfortunately no. For some reason, all the other kids
avoided him... Silas never understood why when he was younger.
It all started with a little plant project in school...

"Okay everyone! As we all know, you all have been
working very hard to learn how plants grow.
So today, I have a surprise! Whoever gets
the answer correct will get a special prize!
So... Can someone tell me what part
of the plant is used to exchange gases?"
Mrs. Frowiss asks the class. I just transferred
to this elementary school last month.

I eagerly raise my paw. I studied so hard last
night; I have an upcoming test and I am so
ready! Other kid's hands start to
shoot up as well, but I know I will be
picked. Some kids are standing on the edge
of their seats, desperate to be chosen. I
patiently sit in my chair, trying to show
Mrs. Frowiss what a good
student I am.

Mrs. Frowiss questions

An eruption of "yes, yes,

screamed throughout

chuckles a bit, "I choose..."

"...Silas."

stops a moment. "Alright, Liam, do you know

glances at me. "It's the stigma," I whisper with

He pauses, and I give him a subtle nod.
"Its the stigma, right?" Liam says a bit more

NOT STUPID
1:50 PM
I confidently look at Mrs. Frowiss.
I start to unintentionally smirk, "The part of the
plant that is used for gas exchange is...
The stomata." I can feel Liam fuming next to me.
It felt like a black pit in my stomach formed. I
wiped the smirk off my face a couple of seconds
after and felt instant regret and guilt. I looked
away from Liam, hoping he wasn't too angry.
"Congratulations, Silas! You're correct!"
Mrs. Frowiss cheered. I sheepishly smiled,
feeling the anger of the people behind me.
I just had to sit in the front.

JUST AFRAID
1:52 PM
"Okay, Silas, I want you to close your eyes
and stick out your paws. No peeking!" The teacher
sing-songs. I reluctantly nod, and slowly stick out
my paws in front of me. I close my eyes timidly,
scared. Part of me hates lying to Liam, but part
of me is proud for winning the prize. My heart
beats with euphoria, but also with guilt.
I hear Frowiss walk somewhere. A couple of
minutes later, she is back walking towards me.
The class is, somehow, in total silence.
I feel her put something in my paws, and I open
my eyes. It's a flowerpot with a marigold in it.

OF MYSELF
1:55 PM
"You're going to plant that flower today!"
Mrs. Frowiss says. I stare at the flower. Don't touch
it.
Its a very strong shade of orange. Don't do it.
I hear a kid snicker from the back of the class. I
clench my jaw. "It looks so cool, doesn't it? You can
touch it, if you'd like," Mrs. Frowiss smiles. My ears
flatten and I am paralyzed in my spot. I have no
where to hide, no where to run. "Silas?" Frowiss looks
at me. I look up at her. "Its okay. You can touch it,
really," she says gently."Hey, look! Emo boy is scared
of flowers!" Someone shouts from the back.
In that moment, anger seeps into my veins.
I furrow my brows and I shout, "NO I
AM NOT

like a river; it felt like it would never end.
"...Silas? I'll... Uh.. C-call your mom, o-okay?"

I angrily push the flower pot

present
I'll never forget the day I killed that flower in front of my class. I was a stupid, ignorant child- did I really have to give in to their taunting? Now I'm just a story to them. "I went to school with a nagaline that would kill anything he touched," they'll probably say to their children, family, lovers, friends- anyone they know. I'm just a sad story- a mistake brought by the universe. I've always tried to act strong, but I always failed. I'm too weak. I softly sigh, leaning on the railing of my balcony. A gentle breeze flows through my hair, as if to say, "its okay. Don't worry." Unfortunately for me, I can't stop worrying. I never changed since I was younger. I'm still stupid, thinking one day someone won't be afraid of me. There's always someone who is afraid. I look down to the street below, watching numerous cars stop and go. I take a deep breath in and clench my paws. I can't live like this anymore.

I walk along the crowded sidewalk. I keep my head down for majority of the time; its not like anyone would notice, anyway. I look at my watch- I have only seven minutes left. I pick up my pace. I stuff my paws in my pockets and keep moving. If I walk a bit faster I could probably make it in five minutes, but its still unlikely. I look up at the cloudy sky, some large birds flying overhead. I replay the words over and over in my head again. I can almost feel the warmth of sun beat down on me like; I still have hope. I can change. I can have a good life- I'll prove the universe wrong.

I stop in front of a large glass building. I start to breathe more rapidly. My paws shake a bit- am I really ready for this? I take a slow steps and then touch the handle of the door in front of me. Its very cold, reminding me of winter. I pull the door open and shut my eyes. I briskly step inside again and open my eyes...

Jingle. I look around. Its a flower shop. I think I went in the wrong buildi-
"Hello," A nagaline about my age says. I look around the shop, confused.
"How may I help you?" She asks with a soft smile.
"Uhh...I don't know if I am in the right place..." I responded. I took a few more steps in the place. Flowers covered every single place in the shop. There were millions of roses, poppies, dahlias, peonies, hydrangeas... I couldn't count. I have never seen so much colour in one place before.
"Oh, you're probably looking for that weird coffee shop upstairs, aren't you?" She sighed, "Looking for a new job, eh? Well, I could use a hand over here. I'll hire you right on the spot if you say yes." I stop and look at her. Is she crazy? Just hiring someone without even knowing them? My mouth hangs open, unable to form words.
"My parents forced me to work here. I get long hours and little pay. They keep nagging me to find someone to work here. I don't really have an option, okay? You wanted a job, right?" She raises an eyebrow, looking unimpressed.
"Uh... Sure...?" I feel my face go pale. I didn't mean to say that.
"Alright. You'll work Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Got it? I'll teach you the basics."
    I'm screwed.

After hours and hours of learning everything, I finally go home. I'm so stupid. I'm so stupid. I'm so stupid. Luckily, I didn't touch a single flower today. I breathe in and out slowly. She'll freak like anyone else will when she finds out what I am capable of.

I come back the next day. I learnt that her name is Iris, and she hands me some gloves.
"Don't forget to make sure that they all get fertilizer and the appropriate amount of water they need, okay? I am going to go out front and put some flowers outside so that people don't think this is that stupid coffee place," Iris murmurs the last part. I nod, scared of what I am getting in to. I go to the 'employees only area' and grab a watering can. I fill it up with water and pour a packet of fertilizer in it. I'll be honest- every single plant I've ever taken care of has died. I either touched it or failed forgotten to give it water, so I'm expecting that I'll be fired in about two weeks or so when the plants start dying off. Then I could go and get a better job where I may not risk scaring people. I heave the heavy watering can towards the plants. I look at all the numerous tags and look at how much water and sunlight they need. I tilt the watering can and give the daises some water. I watch Iris through the window putting big pots of flowers outside.

I wipe the sweat off from my brow and look around. Iris comes back into the shop, eyeing every flower's soil to make sure they are moist enough.
"Not bad, newbie. All you need now is a uniform," Iris smiles, and for some reason my face begins to heat up. The way Iris smiled made me feel oddly fluffy inside, but I suspect it was nothing. Iris goes back to her small office and returns with an apron. She holds it up and shows it to me. The apron is a light blue with a large red sunflower-looking plant on it.
"Every employee gets a different flower on their apron. For example, I have an iris on mine, because, well..." She chuckles a bit, "I'm named after the flower of course!" I smile, and I don't know why.
"Is that flower..." I pause, remembering my lecture yesterday about all the flowers they sold, "A red wave sunflower?" Iris nods, and my smile widens. Maybe this job won't be so bad after all...

"Rule number one," Iris starts slowly, "You cannot go upstairs and purchase a coffee, latte or anything that coffee shop sells upstairs." I listen intently.
"Rule number two, you may not go up to the third floor and purchase clothes from the store on the third floor," Iris says.
Rule number three, you may not go to the other floors and purchase whatever they're selling because we're all sworn enemies. Got it?"
"Yeah, I think I got it," I state. In reality, I have no idea why the stores and shops in this building hate each other. Iris goes to the counter and waits patiently for any customers. I go back to watering the flowers. I am incredibly thankful I am wearing gloves. Jingle. I look over to the door and see two female nagalines. They giggle, talking about something.
    "Hello!" Iris greeted cheerfully.
"Hey," I chimed in. One of the girls gave me a flirty look, one that I am not used to.
"Is there anything you are looking for in particular?" Iris questions.
"I was looking all over for a bouquet of some pink, white and blue flowers, but I couldn't find any that I liked at other shops!" The first one said. I looked around, and I saw some pre-made bouquets in one corner of the store. The first nagaline gasped.
"That's the perfect bouquet!" She pointed at one of the bouquets, and I brought it to her. It was a mixture of daisies, pink roses, and forget-me-nots.

For a couple of hours later, very few people came in to the shop. honestly, it was quite relaxing. Yesterday, I wanted a more interesting job, but Iris told me that they never updated their website and had moved away from this building years ago. I guess I really can't run away from the universe's tricks.

2 weeks later
┌───────────────────┐

Iris has become the friend I never
got to have. She is everything to me. My
friendships never lasted long when I was
younger. I happily enter the flower shop and put
on my apron. I look around for my gloves, but
I can't find them. "I threw out our old gloves.
My parents are getting new ones, but they forgot
to give it to me today. Hope that's alright with
you," Iris nonchalantly says. I freeze up. This
is the time I'll get fired.
I give a solemn nod
and grab the watering can. I start watering the
plants, but I keep my paws far away from
the flowers. Iris tilts her head and gives me
a weird look. "Uhh... Silas... everything is fine,
right?" Iris queried. "Mm-hmm," I hummed, looking
away from Iris so she wouldn't see the fear in my
eyes. I could tell she didn't believe me at all. She
walked towards me. She raised one eyebrow and my
heart started pounding. "Listen," I started, "I kill
every living thing I touch." I breathed out, thinking
my honesty would help me in some way. Iris started
laughing. "Sure you do," She said, not believing me.
I furrowed my brows. I leaned in and gently touched
the flower I was watering. Irises. The purple flowers
shriveled at my touch, loosing their cheery colour
and dying. I looked at Iris. She looked back at me.
"How did you do that?" She asked. I felt all the
blood in my face disappear. What? No one
has ever asked me that before. "I... I was born
like this... My mother always called it a special
gift..." I quietly responded. Iris grabbed my paw,
but let it go immediately after. She hissed in pain.
I looked up at her, waiting for her to scream at me
or something. But she never did. "T-thats...
Weird..." She was still cringing from the pain.
From what I recall, when people touch me,
they get a burning sensation that lasts a few
minutes. I awkwardly stare at her, unsure of
what to think. "I'll... N-never touch you
again..." Iris quaked. My heart sank and I
frowned. My paws dropped to my side.
I looked at floor.

    Iris looked up at me.
"You're g-going to need gloves," Iris stammered. I looked back up at her in
disbelief. She chuckled softly. "I'm guessing you didn't have the greatest
experience in school, then," Iris grinned. The corners of my mouth
twitched upwards. "Yep... Everyone hated me..." I awkwardly said.
"Well, I don't. It's pretty cool that you can do that... Just don't kill
all the flowers, please," Iris said. I happily nodded. "I think I can
do that. All I need is some gloves," I chirped. Is it really
happening? I'm not the bad guy? I'm not scary? Someone doesn't
care what is wrong with me? Am I dreaming? I couldn't focus.
Has the universe finally given me mercy?

So as soon as I saw this adopt, I knew I wanted it. The hair, the colours, the moon on it's tail- it all seemed so perfect. I never knew I would want an adopt so badly... So, prospecte, I thank you for making such a wonderful adopt. I have recently been struggling with writer's block, but for some reason writing a bit of this naga's history seemed to help. Not only that, but it was so fun to do some coding! I honestly don't know what to say. I had such an enjoyable time, but can I just state how much of a great artist you are?! Every adopt I see you make I am in awe. You're such a great artist, prospecte! Again, thanks for the opportunity.

Okay, so of course I needed an idea to make this 'lil guy different in some sort of way. I look at the other people who marked the thread and posted their ideas. They all seemed interesting, but I wanted mine to be more interesting, if that makes sense? So, I thought that maybe I could make this naga mute. Then, I realized, I already have a mute character and the idea would be very boring. So after that I decided that maybe I could make Silas (who, at the time was named 'Edom') have complete colourblindness. I stuck with the idea a bit, but after that I just couldn't find myself writing anything. All of a sudden, I get this idea that maybe Silas would kill/injure anything he touches. I knew I found the perfect idea after that- except for the fact that I wanted it to be in a modern setting. Originally I thought Silas would be in a medieval AU (which would also be very fun!) but I scrapped that idea afterwards. I wanted to test myself to see how Silas would act in a world like today. I wrote a bit about Silas' struggles in school (see "More About Silas" below) and about his life. I really thought about how many people struggled with some sort of illness or disease today, especially in their youth. I actually had trichotillomania when I was younger, and people avoided me for that. They didn't want to hang out with someone because I would pull my eyelashes- so, in a way, I felt obligated to have a piece of myself in the story. I felt the need that no one really wanted to hang out near Silas because they felt scared of him, probably coming up with rumors like 'one touch could kill you' or something. Anyway, I also thought that it would be cool for Silas to end up working in a flower store which reminded him about his most hated memory in school. Its sort of the 'to get rid of fear, you must live it and overcome it' idea. Yes- Silas did have a fear of flowers. He tried to conceal it from Iris, and eventually he didn't fear them anymore. You might be wondering 'who is iris?' well, honestly, I have no idea yet. Maybe when I see a purple nagaline or something and I get it, it will be Iris.

    summary of his past
When he first started kindergarten, he was very, very excited. He wanted tons of friends. Did he get tons of friends? No. He maybe had a few every year, until they found someone more interesting and more fun to play with. Silas was always hesitant with touching others in general, so he never, ever played tag or enjoyed sports. He would constantly transfer to different schools because he told his mother everything. One day in fourth grade, he was super excited to start fresh again, he thought all the nagalines at the school were super cool. He'd joke around with them, and they might laugh along too. It was until what everyone calls "The Marigold Incident" where he scared every single person away. From that moment on, Silas realized he wouldn't have a very easy life. His mother would comfort him, saying his 'ability' was a gift. She'd say that if he'd ever got into a fight, he'd win. She'd go on and on about how amazing it was, but she would also say that every man in his family also had the 'gift'. She'd tell Silas stories about his father. When Silas listened to these stories, he wasn't sure why everyone hated him. He felt lost. Things didn't go well in middle school or high school, either. High school was just too dramatic for him- tons of girls spreading rumors, and guys trying to pick fights with him. He'd win every single fight, but the rumors would spread. Angry girlfirends listened to their boyfriends who lost the fight and tell what would happen to every single person they knew. Only a few girls would have a crush on him, until they looked into his stoic eyes and see how cold-hearted he was. Long story short- Silas was scary in high school. He was tired of everyone running away from him. He never looked very happy, and it was like he'd given up. He had a couple of friends... Those friends moved away, of course. After he graduated, he decided he didn't want to go to college and screw up everything again. He was a part-time author afterwards and was content with his fans. One day he realized he didn't want to hide anymore. He wanted to see people- so he looked online and saw an advertisement for a job that needs someone, someone like him. He went to the building and met Iris. Iris thought he wanted to work as a barista in the coffee shop on the floor above him. He started working at the flower store and met his best friend. From working at the shop, he had a blast. More people decided to work there, and he made more friends. Silas realized you needed to work hard for what you wanted.
