the day that orvomask's patrol brought rainpaw to hazelclan, milo learned something that rosestar hated about leadership. the molly had greeted the new cat with grace, and promptly made him a roughpaw, giving him the name rainpaw, and assigned him mintwave as a mentor.

as the sunset later that day, rosestar groaned as she curled up in their nest. milo looked at his mate in concerns, and rosestar groaned again. "i don't know if you saw," she started. "but whitefox asked to speak with me after rainpaw's ceremony. he demanded to know why he wasn't given an apprentice, and i promised if he did very well in the next few moons, i would give him an apprentice. this is the cat who failed to teach his previous apprentice any skills, and now pinepaw has to wait for another moon or so and can't take his assessment with his sister. i'm sick of entitled cats thinking they deserve a roughpaw." rosestar complained. "as much as i love seeing hazelclan grow, i hate choosing mentors. someone is always upset."

milo made a mental note to talk to whitefox about patroling later. "he has been improving recently, but his attitude concerns me.if he looks like he's becoming a better protector and a better cat, i'll let you know. for now, lets get some rest." he mewed, nudging his mate.

rostestar nodded and the two cuddled up, quickly falling alseep.

milo sat outside of camp, staring off into the distance. he couldn't come to terms with the fact that he lost his kits, and he almost lost his mate. if rosestar was a normal cat like us, i would have lost all four of them.

milo jumped as someone sat next to him, and looked over to see shadedstag. "hey," the tom said, staring at the ground. "how are rosestar and the kits?" he asked.

milo dug his claws into the ground. "rosestar lost a life. the kits.." he trailed off, his eyes watering.

shadedstag looked shocked. "she lost a life? that's terrible... are the kits okay?"

milo let out a quiet hiss, and shadedstag made a questioning noise.

"they're dead okay? gone. rosestar was too stressed, and the kits passed away, and she lost a life." he snapped, lashing his tail.

shadedstag gasped and pressed himself against the deputy. "i'm sorry. i'm so sorry. i-i didn't know." he said quickly. "i-i don't know if you know, but my father was rosestar's brother. rosestar helped raise me, so her expecting kits kinda felt like i was going to get siblings," shadedstag mewed. "di-did you name them?"

milo nodded, calming down a bit. "hopekit, rabbitkit & thrushkit," he paused. "we had a daughter and two sons. and she blamed herself. it wasn't her fault. it was life, but for some reason, i can't seem to accept it."

cliffclaw sat in the middle of camp, the warriors and hunters around him. "stoneglare, take whiskerwing and do some patroling, then help him carry and prey you find on the way back. blazetail, take the apprentices down to the shore to train, and don't come back til sundown. got it?" he asked, and the cats looked at each, confused, then shocked.

cliffclaw whirled around as a paw swiped at his backside. "excuse me, but you're not actually in charge," dragon purred. "since my lovely mate is in the nursery, i'm taking care of the warriors, and, since i am leader, i tell you all when it's okay to train your understudies, remember?" he continued, a sinister smirk on his face.

cliffclaw hesitated for a moment, then nodded, bowing his head. "let's go hunt, blazetail." the tom mewed, embarrassed.
