"Caspian, you know I don't think this is worth it," Idris said. Their brave, fearless leader, Caspian Faustus, commander of the flying circus, was leaning out of their hot air balloon, dangling a sign off the side.
. "My good man! We're advertising! Look," Cap grinned, waving the sign around and - almost impossibly - leaning further out. And indeed, Idris looked, to see some crude, hand-drawn lettering drawn on with black marker - 'CASPIAN'S FLYING CIRCUS! COMING TO YOU SOON!'
Idris frowned down at it, and at the excited lion who was currently risking his life. Again. "Yes, it's very nice, but you're going to fall out."
. "Oh, don't worry yourself so much, lad! This is simply superfluous wonder!" There he went again, rambling about words he didn't even know how to use properly.
. "You do know that doesn't mean what you think it does?" Idris asked, quirking a nonexistent eyebrow.
. Caspian grinned a toothy grin. "Indubitably!"
Idris simply sighed and closed his eyes. He was so busy shaking his head in frustration that he didn't realize that Cap was starting to lose his balance. The slightly smaller lion made a small noise of alarm as he began to topple out of the hot air balloon...
. And then Idris heard, and he caught him. He grabbed Caspian with both front paws and dragged him back to safety. The sign was dropped in the commotion, but frankly Idris didn’t care at all. “You nearly died!” he shouted in the face of his friend, who he had pinned to the ground to stop him from trying to recover his sign. Cap was dazed, eyes looking everywhere at once, everywhere but the viscet’s glare looming above him.
. “Yeah, but -“
. “Don’t you think you’re getting out of this! I don’t know what I’d do without you, and I nearly had to figure that out just now! I warned you that you were being too risky and what did you do about it? Absolutely nothing! You idiot...” Idris was furious. And scared. More scared than anything.
. Caspian had the nerve to ask about the sign.
Idris sighed. His friend could be so ridiculous at times. “Cap. You almost fell into the abyss and you’re worried about a sign that took you five minutes to make?”
. The lion was at least able to look apologetic. "I guess you're right? I don't know. I've just always loved the thrill of danger... and I've gotten used to being risky for the sake of it."
. Idris's anger and fear had subsided by now. "I know you enjoy living on the edge. But seeking a thrill isn't worth your life. We'd all be lost without you to lead us, you know."
. "Sorry, old chap," Cap said at last, closing his eyes. "I guess I can remake the sign. And there's probably a better way to get people to see it."
. Idris finally let Caspian go - he was sure by now that his friend wasn't going to jump out the balloon to get his sign back. The two of them stood at the edge of the balloon, looking down at the world below. The others were coming up from below deck now, curious as to what the commotion was.
They were fine by the next day, of course. Caspian and Idris always had their arguments, and they always had those times where Cap walked a bit too close to the edge, but truly... they were family. And they would always be there for each other.
