Breaking Under

Postby FluffyBirdie » Fri Dec 22, 2017 8:18 pm

Imagehere was once a youthful goddess in the land of the gods, a goddess known for her wisdom, generosity and her constant love for peace. She had appeared to detest violence and war, and had always stayed neutral during mortal wars and godly conflicts, watching the chaos transpire as her prophecies foretold. Nevertheless, upon the day of a conflict destined to tear apart the heavens, the goddess unveiled her true face, and sowed spite among the gods for her own selfish gain, seeking to rule the skies and claim the throne in the midst of war. And so mortal she became, her place in the heavens destroyed and her name forgotten, a fitting punishment for her greed as the gods ordained.

But in a villain’s mind, they are the hero, and for every action made a justification is behind it, and thus this tale is told from the goddess’ past, her justifications and reasoning laid bare for the world to judge.

***

In the beginning, there were only gods. Primordial gods, the creators, destroyers, and rulers of their world. As time passed, more gods came into existence, either born or formed as the world was made. With time, balance was found between these gods, and peace was to be had, even as accidental misunderstandings led to minor skirmishes. It was during this reign of peace that a prophecy was issued to its goddess, one that warned of a war that would tear creation and harm and perhaps even kill the gods themselves, and yet they the gods had little care, for they had a more pressing concern. In those countless peaceful years, unhappiness had developed among the ranks of the younger gods, for jealousy had grown and festered in their heart, and angry and vengeful thoughts clouded their mind. They envied the primordial gods, they who held great power and was, indeed, the kings and queens of the godly domain. And as this thirst for power grew, so did thoughts of an uprising against the primordial gods, until, numerous years later, something snapped, and the little annoyances the younger deities implemented to harass the primordial gods escalated into spats and upfront arrogance and disdain. The younger gods, though much, much weaker, outnumbered the primordial deities and had a greater variety of powers among them, to the extent where if a war was to occur, it would be one that lasts a millennia with no clear winning side and with the world in ruins before a victor is found.

Thus in this way the prophecy’s warning was answered.

Nevertheless, the goddess of prophecy knew that fate was not set in stone, and sought a solution in that could rectify the world. Even as she weighed the consequences of her actions, a constant thought worried at her: how much was she willing to yeild? Yet on seeing the hatred between the gods, the answer was already determined – There was no way of healing the thousand-year long rift between the gods, not with threats of war so close to the present, and so the anger had to be redirected.

Everything had to be given, so she would give everything.

So tell me, where should I go?

Or to the right, where nothing is left... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Weight of The World

Imagehe goddess was formed early into the creation of the world, allowing her to be close to the rank of the primordial gods, and yet her eternal youth relaxed the younger deities, and allowed her to gain acceptance among them. This was used to her advantage, as she became a ‘spy’ for both the primordial gods and the newer generation of gods, when in reality she was working to use their information for her own gain. Her plan was simple: Betrayal of the gods was and always is an infallible method of receiving the gods’ wrath, as they believe that a single act of treachery against one god is equivalent to an act against them all. Thus the goddess made it her aim to become the overlord of the gods, the king of kings, for she knew that the primordial and younger gods would gather to overthrow and punish such a traitor. It was not a perfect plan, and she had fears that, once she was overthrown, they would resume the war, but time refused to allow her greater freedom, and thus she accepted her role as a villain.

With knowledge gained from the primordial and youthful gods as they plotted war, and with knowledge gained over her many centuries of existence, she worked in the dark, implementing plans that would allow her to become the ruler and overlord. These plans were doomed to fail, for one had to have great power to rule over all the gods, but it fulfilled its true purpose, for they were discovered and its maker punished.

In spite, the gathered gods deemed that she would be banished, sent to the earth to wander as a mortal, powerless, and the land made cursed so that no soil allowed her to settle and its peoples reject her as the gods have rightly done.

And the young goddess stood bold on the face of such wrath, knowing her purpose was fulfilled for the gods, primordial and recent, worked to perfect her banishment so that all that identified her as goddess was stripped away. But on hearing all that would be taken away from her: her wings, her powers, her eternal youth, her home – the face she had raised cracked, briefly, and she spoke out of character, asking quietly for a favour, perhaps for her past self: she wished for her wings to be kept.

In a fleeting moment of pity the gathered gods agreed, reasoning that her wings would make the world’s peoples shun her further, and with a touch of something that, in another world, might resemble regret, they banished her, and made complete her judgement.

Omoikane, the goddess of prophecy, now goddess no more.

Thence the world cursed her existence, even as it continued to exist because of her sacrifice. She became the hated wanderer, a curse inflicted by the gods, and her wings which once identified her as a goddess became another reason for the worlds’ peoples’ to reject her further. Even so, she held the hope that someday, the gods might realise her true intentions, and come to accept her name, even if by then she was no longer on earth, her body fading away on a wide plain. And if they never came to discover or accept her, then at least she knew the truth, one that would likely die with her, yet she did not mind such, for her purpose was completed, and the world safe, and for her, nothing was more important than peace. Thus she would soar over the land freely with her cursed wings, the action a fond pastime of her past and a freeing song in the present.

Well, I think there are no villains in this world. There are just misunderstood heroes.
