Chapter 1:
The knock came loud and clear. "What is it now?" roared Mr Thompson, clenching his fists with fury. Pulling open the door, all his anger seemed to fall away. The red colour in his face had drained and was now replaced with a serene smile. My mouth gaped open, I had never seen him like this. Most of the time, Mr Thompson would either stare solidly for thirty minutes out of the window or spend the same amount of time yelling and complaining about pupils. I looked around, realising no one else had picked up his unusual behaviour and were still locked onto their computer screens.
- I was yet to know that the boy standing at the door, held open by my Computer Science teacher, would change my life forever.
"Who are you?" Unexpectedly my voice sounded rough and unstable so I jerked my head up in order to regain my dignity.
"My name's Morris, Zachary Morris." He said solemnly. My laughed echoed in the wide corridor.
"Does someone force you to say that?" I giggled, continuing, "The name's Morris Zachary Morris." I mocked him, imitating James Bond's voice and finding myself coming to a Scottish accent. Out of the corner of my eye, I could've sworn I saw a smile curl up at the side's of his mouth but it might have been a trick of the light.
"I got you out of that lesson and this isn't the time to be laughing." He turned serious as he stopped and faced me. I couldn't help noticing that he was startlingly handsome. Zach's brown hair was curled over into a slightly neat, slightly messy quiff. The colour of his eyes also matched his hair; they were a deep hazel. Either side of his nose were freckles and although they weren't conspicuous I knew that was one of the reasons I would remember him. Not only was he obviously very hot, he was also smart. "Need a little longer?" He smirked, letting his humorous side get the better of him. I was jolted out of my lulled observation by his sweet, silky voice.
"Wha..what? No!" I felt the blood rush to my face. I was blushing. Hard.
"Oh, it's okay...your time's up anyway!" Zach reached a hand up to the side of my cheek for a brief moment then slid it back down to beside a door. I didn't feel anything. I didn't understand. The door held a handle which he pulled open for me. He gestured with both hands to go into room so I did as I was told and left the cute boy out in the corridor.
I couldn't remember the last time I had been in the room. It's walls were high, and the expanse of space made me apprehensive. On one of the walls, at the front, was a projector. There was almost always one in all of my lessons but this board looked more...high-tec. It was a completely back screen until a presentation flicked on revealing two words. Get Ready. I shivered. I was in the building I had been in for most of my life and yet here I was scared of the emptiness of the room. "Silence is a useful gift." Said a voice from the shadows. I decided not to say anything. "But today, your voice will be needed the most." He finished walking into the light of the projector. He was a tall man, wearing a smart suit and a tie. He was the sort of guy who would slip past your attention on the street; if someone asked you to recite who you saw today, he wouldn't be on the list. He could've been a shadow for all I knew. "My name is Mr Jones and I am here to give you a little test," He waltzed over to a computer and pressed a few keys.
"We are testing everyone in your class don't worry!" He smiled and I could tell instantly it was a forced smile. Fake.
"There have been a few people missing." I uttered, keeping my eyes on the so called Mr Jones in the corner. My eyes soon adverted to the board again. This time it held a word. Zach.
"Tell me, what do you know about him? Obviously, you have only just met him, so his personality is irrelevant as you wouldn't be able to gauge that. But," He paused, taking a careful breath, "tell me about his appearance." I was starting to get comfortable with the man and my surroundings but I didn't push it. I still forced myself to be aware, to be focused.
"He has dull hazel eyes, although somehow they twinkle in the light. They don't give anything away. He must have secrets" I took a break to picture Zach, then I wondered if I should give away that he is incredibly gorgeous. "His brown hair is curled into a quiff. Untidy but still smart. His tie was loose, so I guessed he had recently changed. He had freckles. Something almost unnoticeable but still...adorable. Zach is, of course, perfect." I sighed, looking over at Mr Jones, who had been intently listening and still was by the looks of it.
"Very interesting," He exclaimed, smiling. Except this time, the smile was pure and genuine.
"I suspect you say that to everyone." My voice still staying serious.
"No. Not at all. Many of the girls plainly noticed that he was handsome and only said they would date him." He began to laugh and I joined in. "And yes you did say he is perfect but you picked up certain other things."
"This was setup though, wasn't it? He was supposed to be cute and he was supposed to reach his hand to my face." I finished, annoyed that I had fallen for the clear trap.
"Well," Mr Jones' tone changed to more dramatic, "for all of the other girls he had leaned in and kissed them ever so lightly on the cheek as I had asked him too, but for you I suppose he didn't want to fool you as much." My eyebrows furrowed and felt even more confused as I had about the test. "Your classmates had walked away feeling as if they had fallen in love with a boy and he had fallen in love with them but Zach seemed to not wanted to force you into the trap. He just simply wanted to play fair." I was thankful for the explanation but in my head, I still dwelled over Zach. Play fair?
"Anyway, you've showed the true skills of an agent. If you wouldn't mind, I would like to meet again for another type of assessment. next Thursday?" Mr Jones handed me a slip of paper but I didn't read it. I just walked out of the classroom with his last words ringing in my ears. "Ever wanted to be a spy Ellen?"
Chapter 2:
I guessed I wasn't the only newbie. They must haul children into the school from everywhere right? I was waiting outside my old school gates, as I had been told to do in the letter, for some unknown vehicle to pick me up. After a long 10 minutes, a posh black land rover smoothly glided with elegance up over the hill. I automatically realised I hardly looked like the person to be picked up but that car. That car looked more graceful than me, it must be picking up someone else. I was here waiting for a little smart car to stop in front of me no that sophisticated vehicle. It pulled in a few feet away from me but I turned my head and gazed at the fields behind me. The window rolled down silently and a slender man dressed all in black could be seen glancing nervously at me. I smiled awkwardly. "You called and said you needed a taxi to take you to the airport." The man was obviously and agent. He showed no signs that he had just spoken the words which on my letter said were the code words to get in the car. He was a professional and I got straight in without hesitation.
The car journey was long and boring except from the fact that I was able to choose my own music from any album I liked. "You know your the first person who hasn't asked for sweets or candy. You must be a new!" The driver laughed, looking momentarily into the rearview mirror from where he could see me. "I try to keep to myself" I answered simply.
"Like a proper spy." He complemented my stillness then returned to focus on driving. When I woke up from an uncomfortable, dis-jointed sleep, the car was just parking. "Here's your uniform ma'am and I hope to see you at the end of this semester/term!" He smiled handing me a red and black jumper, a tie in the same colours and black tights and skirt. After saying goodbye and thank you, I headed for the main entrance with a map in my hand. When I neared the black spiked gates my stomach flipped over. What if they didn't open? But luckily, there was no need for me to worry because in an instant the gates were slowly but surely opening inwards. Inviting me into the massive mansion I was now staring at...open-mouthed! It was so extravagant and beautiful that I wasted no time in rushing towards the black door in sight.
Once inside, the noise hit me. Girls dashed over to their friends and boys rushed off in the direction of the buffet. It took me a minute to gauge where I was supposed to go. Fortunately, I spotted the teacher who had given me the test, Mr Jones. I marched up to him, "Sir?" He flung around and smiled when he recognised me. "Ah Ellen you're here!" he blurted out and almost reached for a hug before his brain re-engaged with the rest of his body and he held out his hand. I took and shook it a few times until I noticed who stood beside Mr Jones. It was two girls who looked genuinely excited about me. "Perfect timing!" Mr Jones noticed my curiosity and turned back to speak to all of us. "These are your new roommates, Isabelle and Lola!" The girls grinned and nudged me away from the crowds. We were nearing the buffet at the corner of the large lobby when they began to speak. "Hey there, you can call me Bella!" The first girl hugged me whilst introducing herself. She had large brown eyes and similar colour hair. She was pretty but most of all she was confident and I liked her for that. "And I'm Lola!" The other girl squealed and she lifted me off my feet to hug me. I was shocked but found myself laughing. Lola had blonde hair which looked like she'd just walked out of bed. Although some how she managed to flaunt that. "Hi, I'm Ellen!" I laughed hugging both of them. After a while we began to walk to our dorm. Lola and Bella have already been here for a few years so they knew much more than I did. On our way up we met a familiar person. It was Zach. The person who had seemed to let me off in the test and given me a break compared to the rest of the girls. "Hey Zachy!" Lola teased tugging at his arm. He pushed her off and she laughed, assuming he was playing hard to get. "Oh hey Ellen, nice to see you again!" He smiled sauntering closer to me.
"Hi Zach," I replied, nodding towards him, "I didn't realise you went here."
"Oh yeah, I've been here a few years now!" He smirked before Lola interrupted.
"With me and Bella!" She finished giggling. I rolled my eyes and edged further away.
"Well I guess I'll be on my way." Then he was off down the corridor, eagerly being followed by Lola who was hot on his trail. Me and Bella just stood there and watched her until she was out of sight and around the corridor. We burst into laughter.
"Yep," Bella started, opening the door, "she likes Zach!" And with that I turned the handle and walked in.
