Occupation:
White witch; good at healing with herbal medicines and some basic spell work. Is hidden by family because she is both revered in the community and also feared. They do not wish for the community to turn against and target her. She helps mother and sister with her medicine.

Other ideas:
She died around 5 years ago, at the age of 11... from unseen internal issues.

A concept:
what if Bart began stealing because Acantha was really sick and the family needed the money to treat her? But then it later became a habit/something that he enjoyed beyond just helping his sister. For Acantha, I'm thinking that she maybe had some health problems when she was younger as an invisible side-effect of her mutations, and those health problems eventually lead her to her death. Perhaps Bart used the money to pay a wiccan/witch who practices dark magic or whatever to perform a ritual to bring his sister back, and it worked but she came back just a little different/kind of off? Because of her health problems, she could become the apprentice to the wiccan/witch so that she can learn to treat her own symptoms and help others the way that she was helped. But she just uses herbal medicines and prayers and such because she doesn't have actual magical abilities like the witch she studies under does.

Actually, since her mother is an alchemist and her sister Rita is a nurse of sorts, I can't imagine they'd be too against Acantha being treated by or an apprentice for a witch/wiccan? So maybe what happened is the whole family made a deal with the witch? Bart could still have stolen money in the beginning to help her, but once no conventional methods were working, the family could have made a deal with the witch that said that if she treated Acantha, then Acantha would have to stay with her and become an apprentice to work off the debt. And though the family knew she was really sick, they were unaware that she died just before they arrived at the witch's home, and the witch had to bring her back to life with a ritual??? Because she is "unnatural" in the eyes of society both because of her mutations and her revival, she hides from the world for fear of persecution only to find that once she is older she is revered by the community for being a phenomenal healer. Her family often tries to visit but she doesn't always want to see them.

Bartholomew and Acantha get along extremely well. Though they are the same age, Bart acts like an older brother and is in turn very protective of her. If anyone were to ever be cruel to Acantha, Bartholomew would step in immediately to defend his sister. When the kits were younger, these two were inseparable. Acantha was often sick, and because their family was rather poor, they couldn't always afford to pay for treatment. Bart hated seeing her unhealthy, so he started stealing whenever he went into town with their mother, Valkyrie. He told no one of this, and with time became very skilled at pick-pocketing. He used the money to purchase medicine for Acantha in secret, and managed to keep it hidden from the family for quite a while. Out of the blue, Acantha would suddenly begin to regain strength, and the family would rejoice. But once Valkyrie and opal found out what Bart had been doing, they were furious. There was no way they would ever condone stealing from others in order to better ones own situation. Once Bart stopped stealing, she went a long time without medicine, and Acantha's situation worsened and worsened until it was too late.

Bartholomew and Acantha get along extremely well. Though they are the same age, Bart acts like an older brother and is in turn very protective of her. They did everything together: they chased fireflies all over the hills surrounding their home, they caught frogs in the marshes by the river, and they even play fought together (the last one was an activity they especially loved to include Kibasha in). However, that all changed when Acantha's health began to decline. She no longer had the energy to play with her brother and sisters, and it broke her to not be able to do the things that her siblings could. Her mothers kept her inside and constantly resting in hopes that she would heal eith time.

General Family Info
- Own a modest house in a moderately poor medieval town, with farmland surrounding the outskirts
- Consists of moms Opal and Valkyrie, as well as children Rita (f) and Kibasha (f) ((and the two UFA kits))
- Usually only Opal is at home, as Valkyrie travels (more info below)
- Make a decent living, but don't have much money to spare
- Live very close to the marketplace

Opal

Opal could be considered the mom mom. Formerly a worker at a local bakery, she settled into the home life when she became pregnant and has stayed at home with the kits ever since. A quiet and gentle-natured young woman, she is loving and doting but will be firm with her children when needed. She's got strong motherly instincts and is usually very aware of much of what is going on around the house, especially since she runs things herself. In order to make a living, she's taken up portrait painting, although she's worked hard to keep her identity as a painter moderately secret. She's rather talented, but still wants her children to be her primary focus. She and Valkyrie get along wonderfully, but it isn't unusual for Opal to get a bit distant when Valkyrie has been away for a long time.

Valkyrie

The much more eccentric parent, Valkyrie is a practicing alchemist who specializes in fireworks and smoke effects. She travels often, constantly moving from town to town every couple of days to put on shows and sell her elixirs to the townspeople to make her modest living. Due to the nature of her traveling show, it's difficult for her to spend more than a few weeks at a time at home. Most often she'll be at home for a week or two, then gone for two or three before returning again. She loves her children dearly and takes much more of a crazy aunt role than a motherly role at times, getting the children to help her experiment with her alchemic creations and teaching them how to make some of her most exciting brews. She always brings a light and cheery attitude to the household, and makes it hard not to smile and laugh (although Opal has to occasionally scold her for getting the children's fur singed in their experiments). She'd like to someday settle down, but for now the road is a kind of necessity to keep her business going.

Rita (bottom right)

A gentle young kalon, Rita takes in many ways after Opal in her kindheartedness and motherly nature. She's unlikely to speak an unkind word even to her least favorite people, and has been fascinated by the art of healing. She spends her afternoons picking up the practice of midwifery, and loves to experiment with Valkyrie to create healing drafts and tonics that can prevent and cure disease. She's never phased by even the most gruesome of injuries, and often tries to assist the other doctors and midwives whenever she has the chance. If she isn't hanging around the medicinal workers or at home, she can be found in the marketplace browsing for new things to experiment with, and has a penchant for silver jewelry that occasionally leads to a bit of irrational spending. She does have a rather impressive collection, though. She gets along well with her sister Kibasha, but prefers to spend more quiet time alone, generally. The two can sometimes be seen at the market together, but more often they interact in their time spent at home with their mothers, particularly when Valkyrie is home.

Much more of a free spirit than Opal or her sister Rita, Kibasha (or Basha for short) considers her self to be a serious young adventurer. Much to Opal's unease, Kibasha is obsessed with the art of swordplay, and while her mother won't allow for anything more serious than fencing, she takes it very seriously. Someday, she hopes to become her own kind of vigilante, and it's far from unusual to see her writing or drawing pictures of her imagined adventures. She's also an avid reader, of course preferring poems and more artistic means of expression. Without a whole lot of access to adventure stories, she makes them up herself and will read them to Opal anytime she's made significant progress. Opal supports her writing and artistic endeavors wholeheartedly, but still tries to limit her actual adventures that have landed her in a bit of trouble from time to time. Kibasha has snuck off to the more elite parts of their town and tried to get into fencing matches with much older opponents, which don't always go very well for her. She's gotten into trouble more than once for sneaking into closed shops or homes just because she wants to practice her abilities. Opal feels much more comfortable when Rita agrees to go into town with Kibasha, as she can trust Rita to keep her in line. Valkyrie is much more supportive of her adventurous ideas, but sometimes it does take a talk with her to get Kibasha to calm down and think a bit more about the consequences of her actions.
