Chapter 1
It was night. Red and blue lights were flashing through the rain, the sirens wailing as they sped down the street. A girl was running with a boy, they were both soaked from the rain, their clothes were grimy, and you could tell they've been living on the streets their whole lives.
"Go ahead Jax, deliver the package to the boss." The girl said urgently to the blonde haired boy named Jax, as she shoved a poorly wrapped bundle into his arms.
"No Katie, I'm not leaving you here to get caught." Jax said quickly as he grabbed Katie's arm.
"Jax, I've been running from the police my whole life. I'm sure I can get out of this." Katie said as she grabbed Jax's face and kissed his forehead. "I'll be back I promise." She spun him around and pushed him forward.
"Katie don't go-" Before Jax could continue Katie was already halfway down the street. Without thinking Jax bolted after her. He followed Katie into an alley where she was cornered by a couple policemen.
"Let her go!" Jax shouted.
"Jax what are you doing here I told you to go!"
"Katie I'm not leaving you."
Jax charged forwards but it was too late, the police had already cuffed Katie's hands together and we're now turning on Jax. Jax ran out of the alley and hid behind a trash can. The police gave up searching for him and shoved Katie into the car, they sped off the red and blue lights still flashing.
Jax felt a drop of water slide down his face, he couldn't tell if it was tears or the rain. He looked down at the soaked package in his hands. He tore at the wet paper to reaveal a black box, carefully he opened it. Inside was a necklace decorated with purple gems, Jax didn't know what she needed this. He picked up the necklace and shoved it into his pocket, before dumping the package and running down the street into the night.

Katie was now in a hospital room, she had gone to court and took full responsibility of stealing that necklace. She was sentenced 3 months in juvenile detention, but that was a lie. Somehow she ended up on this bed strapped down, awaiting her fate.
Suddenly the door swung open a the doctor came in. He was holding a needle, and Katie began to panic, she had a huge fear of needles.
"Ah, no need to panic. It will hurt less if your calm." He walked over to the side of the bed.
"What are you going to do?" Katie asked her eyes wild with panic.
"That's none of your concern, now sit back and relax it will only take a second."
Katie opened her mouth to respond, but before she could say anything he stuck the needle in her arm. She could feel the cold liquid moving through her veins, then it began to burn. Like lava was going through her body. Katie opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out, her arm began twitching and soon the pain became unbearable. Blackness began to cloud her vision and soon she was engulfed in never ending darkness.
Katie jolted awake, she looked around. Sunlight was flooding through the barred window of her cell.
"It was all just a bad dream." Katie said to herself. Although it wasn't, all of that happened, but she still liked to believe it didn't.
Katie rolled off the cot she was sleeping on, it creaked as her weight left the side. She smoothed out her short purple hair and pulled on her black leather jacket, to cover the gross brown t shirt she and the other inmates were forced to wear. The jacket was a gift from Jax, he gave it to her a few weeks before she was taken. It still smelled of the rain from that night, giving her bad memories, but she still wore it.
Katie sat down on the cold gray concrete floor, and stared out of her cell door, waiting for breakfast. She soon grew bored and began tapping on the metal bars of the door.
"Would you stop?" A feminine voice yelled.
"What if I don't want to?" Katie responded smartly.
"I swear I'll choke you."
Katie rolled her eyes. "Sure you are."
"I've choked someone before and I'll do it again."
Katie raised her hands up. "Oh wow I'm so scared!"
The girl didn't respond so Katie leaned back against the wall. Before she heard metal scrape against the concrete floor. It was a metal try holding a stale piece of bread and gross tasteless eggs. Katie knew this breakfast all too well, in fact she's being eating very day of her life for the past year.
"Finally some food." The girl next door said.
"I honestly don't know how you can eat this." Katie replied as she took a bite of the eggs, they felt dry and hard in her mouth.
"I've been eating trash from trash cans for almost my whole life. This is like a feast."
Katie nodded her head, she knew that street life all too well. Finally when she finished eating, she pushed the tray back out of the cell, and the door slid open. Katie stood up and walked into the hallway that was also crowded with people around her age. She looked behind her too see that girl she was talking too. She had short green hair and blue eyes, she was pretty well built for a girl but then again. Everyone here had a nice set of muscles.
Katie flinched when a guard in a black suit cuffed her arms together. Suddenly as if all the life was sucked out of her she became tired.
"What are these things." The girl said halfway through a yawn.
"There cuffs, they suck up our power so we won't be able to use them against the guards."
"Powers?"
"Yeah everyone here has one, including you." Katie said as the guard pushed her forwards out of the building.
"Where are they taking us?"
"Would you stop asking questions? It's kind of getting annoying." Katie snapped.
"Sorry." The girl mumbled.
Katie and the girl, along with several other teens were packed into a truck. Katie chose a seat across from the girl, then the truck lurched forward and began to move.
"I'm Katie."
The girl looked at her. "Um, I'm Alex."
"Nice to meet you, Alex." Katie said with a smile.
"So where are we going?"
"To the training facility, I'm guessing your getting categorized today."
"Categorized?" Alex asked raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah there going to determine wether your a Strong, Speeder, or Unnatural."
"What are you?"
"I'm an Unnatural." Katie pursed her lips, "I can control shadows and stuff."
Alex nodded her head. "Cool. I wonder what my power is."
Katie examined her. "I'm guessing your a Strong, judging by your how your body is built. Strongs usually have more muscle than the rest of us."
Alex looked at her hands, as if she was wondering what she could do with them. "Why do we have to train?"
Katie looked at Alex like she was stupid or something, "Honestly that shot did a real number on you." She paused, "Well we are training for World War Three obviously, and the government thought that maybe our armies would win. If we, you know had super soldiers of some sort. Which leads us right to where we are now."
The truck jumped up as it ran over a speed bump, "So you telling me, we are going to be sent out to battle."
Katie nodded her head, "Yeah something like that, well not until we are in stage two of our training. But some of us don't even make it out."
Alex opened her mouth to respond but was interrupted by the doors to the truck swinging open, the guards grabbed them and pulled them to the front of a tall gray building with the number 63 on the side of it.
They were brought to a gate, where another person clipped a watch like thing around their wrists. Katie winced as a needle shot out of the watch piercing her skin, the watch blinked and a hologram of her face projected out of it.
"Katie Norton, age 18, gender female, power Unnatural." The watch said befor the hologram retreated back into the watch. The guard pushed her forward waiting for Alex to finish.
"Alex Howlter, age 18, gender male, power unnatural."
Katie gasped, Alex was a dude? She swore he looked and sounded like a girl, part of her was also shocked that Alex had unnatural powers.
Alex and Katie began walking side by side into the building.
"So your a man?" Katie asked looking at Alex.
"Not exactly."
"Ok then." Katie looked straight ahead, as they turned a corner heading straight towards the Lab. "Hey why are we."
"Shut your mouth." The guard said, as he used his own watch to open the Lab doors. The guard later gave Katie and Alex to a doctor.
"Wait here." She said gently as she walked off.
Katie leaned against a wall and Alex sat down beside her. Katie stood up straight when she heard a high pitched shrill.
"Katie!"
