Dia's Warriors World

Postby Dia. » Mon Apr 10, 2017 6:09 pm

Welcome to my dysfunctional corner of the writing board! I've recently been sucked violently back into the Warriors fandom after abandoning one of the biggest parts of my childhood for a solid few years. Oh what a ride it's been!
I've decided to embark on a journey into the wild of my own warrior's world. I'm going to build it all. Not everything is going to be canon; things are going to seem different. That's okay, because I'm stretching the creativity muscles I've been neglecting since I became a scientist-in-training.
I've never really done this before, so this should be a disaster fun.

Feel free to post, just please don't spam my thread with "marking". There is a bookmark button for that... If you're going to post, please post a comment at least somewhat related to my project such as critique, ideas, or whatever! I'll also help you develop your world, if you like! This is meant to be a pretty casual topic for those of us dabbling in adding depth to our obsessions.
I'll make a table of contents so that all the bits and pieces can fit together as they get posted!

    "We're here!"
    "Um, where exactly is... here?"

The clans live in an area heavily inspired by my memories of where I lived for the first half of my childhood(east coast). Of course I don't remember much, so I've just taken bits and pieces and mashed them together.

Information

Four clans, Riverclan, Forestclan, Skyclan, and Marshclan, have divided the land into their four territories. The territories are separated from the twoleg places by a wide river, known to the clans as the Great River. While the land seems relatively untouched by twolegs, it was actually largely affected by them. The land went through a process of "rewilding," so most of the ecosystem was recreated by the twolegs many seasons ago.
The area has a pretty moderate climate, but the winters are cold and the summers are warm and humid. Precipitation(rain/snow) is common in all seasons. Because they are on the coast, the clans have learned to cope with severe weather such as hurricanes. However, they are inland enough that they do not feel the full force of the storms.
The clan territories are home to a variety of plant life including both evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs, and smaller plants.
They share their territories with larger animals such as deer and foxes. Chipmunks, squirrels, other assorted rodents, and many kinds of birds are plentiful. The clan cats need to also be aware of raccoons, skunks, and snakes.

The clans live in close proximity to two-legs, so they are familiar with their pets (dogs and cats alike) as well as their fishing and boating habits. They call boats and cars by name, as they were taught the proper terms.

Animal Life (Prey/Small): chipmunks, squirrels, mice, voles, shrews, rabbits, blackbird, robin, woodpecker, snakes, bluebird, lark, cardinal, starling, rats, moles, misc birds, misc fish, misc frogs, ducks, gopher, lizards, salamander
Animal Life (Neutral): groundhog, skunks, deer, turkey, bats, possum, raccoon, geese, turtles,
Animal Life (Predator): fox, coyote, snakes, eagle, owl, hawk, dogs, twolegs

Trees: maple, alder, birch, dogwood, cedar, hickory, walnut, holly, beech, persimmon, hawthorn, pine, mulberry, magnolia, poplar, cherry, aspen, plum, sycamore, chokecherry, oak, cypress, willow, hemlock, spruce, elm,
Bushes/Vines: serviceberry, hazlenut, fern, witch hazel, huckleberry, laurel, myrtle, azalea, sumac, arrowwood, blueberry, elderberry, rose, wisteria, grape, cranberry,
Small Plants/Herbs/flowers: milkweed, indigo, tickseed, marigold, daisy, geranium, aster, coneflower, violet, lily, mallow, sunflower, false sunflower, frostweed, bluebells, honeysuckle, lupine, lavender, foxglove, primrose, horsemint, beebalm, goldenrod, blackeyed susan, strawberry, vervain, sedge, fern, grass, heather, rush, dandelion, catnip, goldenseal, catmint, alfalfa, chamomile, echinacea, feverfew, thistle, basil, chervil, dill, mint, parsley, rosemary, sage

*Some plants do not occur naturally, but have been brought in by animals from twoleg gardens

Marshclan's camp is situated on high ground, which provides a dry space to create nests. For reasons unknown to the clans, the soil quality is very poor on Marshclan territory. The vegetation is mostly low-lying shrubs and grass. The larger plants grow near the river. Marshclan has a landmark known as Twisted Tree, an old, very dead tree used for training and activities. The western part of their territory is rather hilly, so it is usually dry, while the eastern part closer to the river is wet. Marshclan's territory seems to retain water while Riverclan's territory seems to release its excess water into the great river.
Riverclan's camp is situated just off the beach in the north portion of the territory. They use large boulders, shoreline grasses, and low-lying shrubs to create their dens.
Their territory is mostly open space with shorter vegetation like grasses and shrubs. However, there are clumps of larger trees in the territory, especially closer to Forestclan. They hunt mostly in the rivers and on the shores, but they also know how to hunt in open spaces.
Forestclan's territory is an expansive forest. It is rather dense and populated with numerous old, sturdy trees. Their forest thins out as you approach either border. Forestclan has its own small lake, where they do some hunting. However, it's mostly used for recreation and the medicine cats tend to many herbs there. Forestclan cats mostly hunt on land. Their camp is in a clearing surrounded by dense bushes and trees. Split Tree marks the border between Forestclan and Skyclan with an exciting legend. (continuous border skirmish, starclan struck the tree with lightning and split it in half, one side for each clan)
Skyclan's territory is wide open. They have a few trees here and there, but it mostly has low-lying shrubs and grasses. It's a little hilly, especially to the south, but for the most part, it is flat. Most of the diverse vegetation is near the river. Skyclan's camp is in a hollow in the ground where they have dug dens into the ground. Skyclan has the Sun Rocks on their territory, a source of jealousy from all the other clans, as it provides lovely warmth and basking during all seasons.
Star Pool is on Riverclan territory, right on the beach of the river. When the tide rises the slightest, the shallow pools in the rocks are refreshed. This is where leaders come to receive their nine lives and where the medicine cats communicate with Starclan.
High Peak is on Riverclan's border. This is where the clans gather during the full moon. The gathering location consists of a jagged rock with four ledges, a sandy beach, and a clear pool that reflects the night sky. The leaders perch on the rock, known was High Peak. They address the clans, who sit below them on the sand between High Peak and the pool. The leaders address the clans this direction, despite there being more space on the other side, because they don't want to turn their backs on their ancestors who have joined the gathering in the pool.

    Origins of the Clans

Overarching Origin

Riverclan was the first clan to form and from it stemmed the rest of the clans. It all started with a very small group of strays who lived in the city across the river. Their leader, Harvey, was as fearless as he was curious about the new world he saw growing on the opposite bank. His brother, Sunny, refused to humor him so he set off one night alone to explore. It was simple enough due to the twoleg bridges providing a dry crossing.
Once he was on the other side, he found land undisturbed by twolegs for as far as he could see. There was prey and no competition with other cats. Harvey didn't explore farther the lowlands right off the beach, but he could see the forest and trees in the distance. He wanted to stay and make his home here.
The tom wasted no time in hurrying back across the river to tell his brother and friends his news. Eventually, his stories of his grand adventure tempted a clowder to follow him to the new world, including his brother.
While some of the cats he lead quickly decided to return to the city, a few stayed. They made their camp just off the riverbed where there was a collection of large boulders, fashioning dens out of low lying grasses, branches, and shrubs. Even though they lived together and considered Harvey to be their leader, the cats did not work as a team. Each fended for his or herself, only interacting during times of rest. This system worked for a few moons, but it soon became clear that structure was needed as their story spread and more cats made the journey across the river.... and not all of the newcomers would prove to be friendly.
A rather aggressive tom by the name of Shark soon joined the cats by the river. He quickly began stirring up unrest, making others question their system and their leader who had only gained his position by default. He gained followers and plotted to attack Harvey, effectively overthrowing the first leader of the cats by the river. Sunny, distraught over the loss of his brother, returned to the city.
Shark's plan was a success and Harvey was killed, signifying the end of a peaceful existence by the river. The thing he hated most about the way they lived before his leadership was the lack of structure, and that was the first thing he fixed. For the first time, the group started working as a team. He assigned guard and patrol duties to the larger, stronger toms while she-cats and the smaller toms were assigned to hunting, scouting, and work on the camp. They started to refine fighting and hunting strategies. He picked a cat known as Toad to be his second in command.
He started calling his clowder the River Cats, but they were also known as the Cats of the River. Newcomers were still welcomed, as Shark knew that they needed numbers to grow and be successful in the wild new world. However, they were put through a rigorous probation period of training and hard work. The River Cats gained quite the reputation in the city due to rejects and those who were scared off returning to their old homes.
Shark's rule lasted for many moons and he built an image of himself as the most powerful cat by the river. He was considered a god; Kits and newcomers were told he would live forever while those who knew better were forced to keep their mouths shut. Even the strongest of guards were too afraid to challenge him.
However, this was about to change. By this point, the River Cats had explored most of their modern territory as well as beyond the modern borders. A young she-cat by the name of Moon was scouting one night when she was drawn to rocks in the shallows of the river. The full moon and stars reflected perfectly in the clear, refreshed water. As soon as she touched the water, she was thrown into visions, the words "The moon always rises" echoed in her mind. Moon had discovered the Star Pool.
When she awoke, she was surrounded by the faded, starry forms of cats--the warrior ancestors of the clans who had made this land their home countless moons earlier before twolegs destroyed it. She was shown the ways of the old clans.
Harvey was among the starry forms, and along with six other notable old ancestors, he gave Moon her nine lives. Harvey was the first to welcome her by her new name, Moonstar, and advised her to use her new lives to lead the River Cats.
Moonstar returned to camp, feeling energized and fearless to challenge Shark. Every cat was surprised and some mocked her, but the young she-cat didn't back down. The battle was poorly matched and Shark killed Moonstar quickly, much to the horror of the others. However, during his boast, Moonstar's chest heaved as she regained consciousness and got to her paws.
"The stars declared I will lead these cats to greatness. The moon always rises!" She yowled as she launched herself at the much larger tom. This time, with the strength of hundreds of warriors by her side, she defeated Shark.
Moonstar told her story of the Star Pool over Shark's body. She told the tales of the old clans. Finally, she announced her new name and declared that they would be known as Riverclan and each member would earn his or her title as a warrior.

Shark's follower's chose to flee to the marshy land to the west. They tried to continue the life that Shark created in his honor, but the clowder quickly failed while Riverclan thrived. Defeated, they sought guidance. Moonstar wouldn't let them join Riverclan, but assisted them in creating their own clan. In the end, Toad became Marshclan's first leader. Moonstar led him to the Starpool where he received his nine lives, his new name, and saw glimpses of the old clans.

Riverclan and Marshclan lived together for seasons while newcomers continued to move across the river.

Forestclan was founded by a she-cat named Bird. She worked hard to become a Riverclan warrior, but did not feel comfortable in the river. She was drawn to the trees to the south. Starclan urged Moonstar to "guide the bird to the trees," and she took this as a sign to help Bird explore the forest. The two she-cats created territory boundaries for Bird to start maintaining, and the Riverclan leader started to turn the newcomers to the newly founded Forestclan.

The three clans thrived, but there was still a section of the land that remained empty. Moonstar was determined to recreate the four clans that once lived on their territories, just as Starclan had urged her to do. However, no opportunities presented themselves as the three clans were feeling content in their territories. She began to worry until Starclan showed her a vision of weary cats completing a long journey. At the next gathering, she learned from Birdstar and Toadstar that they had seen the same vision. They eagerly awaited the arrival of the fourth new clan.

Finally, clan scouts spotted the group of cats and the leaders traveled to meet them. The travelers were grateful for the help and the leaders showed them their territory and where they could make camp. They warned them of the borders and gave them an overview of their code. However, when the leaders invited the newcomers' leader, Thundering Call, to the Starpool to receive his nine lives, he scoffed and dismissed them. He was adamant that his colony of Sky Watchers would not yield to the ways of the clans.
Moonstar was horrified that allowing them to stay was a mistake, but the leaders left respectfully to see how things would play out.
While the Sky Watchers recovered, they were a peaceful group and didn't cause any trouble. However, once they regained their strength they started to torment their neighboring clans. In particular, they had their sights set on Forestclan's territory. For the first time since Moonstar challenged Shark, the clans were not at peace.
Multiple battles ensued on the border between the Sky Watchers and Forestclan and the hostility went on for moons. The leaders began to regret their decision to let them stay. Perhaps there wasn't meant to be four clans on the land anymore?
There was a particularly bloody battle at Split Tree, but this battle marks the end of the hostility. (See "The Battle of Split Tree" in legends) When Starclan struck the tree, it split into two. Each half fell, fatally wounding the leaders of the Sky Watchers and Forestclan. Of course, Birdstar had her nine lives, and soon recovered. Thundering Call stayed dead. His second-in-command, Scattered Leaves, was distraught but agreed with the clan cats when they argued that the falling tree was an obvious omen. While her Sky Watchers returned to their camp with Thundering Call, Birdstar escorted Scattered Leaves to the Starpool where she accepted Starclan and received her new name, Leafstar, and her nine lives. Upon her return to her camp, she announced the changes they would be making to follow the clans' code. This marked the beginning of Skyclan.

    Clan Structure

Basic

Leader - The clan leader receives nine lives from the Star Pool to lead their clan. They receive messages from Starclan, lead the clan with the help of the elders, their deputy, and medicine cats, and often hunt and patrol with their clan mates. The leader is the voice of the clan and will report at gatherings.
Elders - The elders of the clan have earned a highly respected position due to their experience over their seasons in the clan. They often provide insight and aid the clan's leader in making decisions. They are also responsible for helping the leader choose the clan's deputy. While they have retired from warrior duties, they still aid their clan through their insight and watching kits and young apprentices. Elders have an important role in honoring fallen clan members.
Deputy - The clan's deputy is chosen by the leader. They serve as the leader's second-in-command and successor if the leader loses his or her ninth life. The deputy organizes patrols and day to day clan life.
Medicine Cats - Medicine cats serve the clan through healing rather than as a warrior. They are trained in using herbs to treat illnesses and wounds. Medicine cats speak to Starclan regularly and receive and decipher messages. While each medicine cat is trained and proficient in all areas of their job, some of them choose to specialize.
Medicine Cat Apprentices(4-16 moons) - From the age of 4 moons old, medicine cat apprentices train with the other medicine cats. They receive their full name at a meeting with Starclan after about 12 moons of training, or when their mentors believe that they are ready. A medicine cat always receives his or her full name at the Star Pool.
Warriors - The warriors make up the body of the clan. They are trained to hunt and fight in order to best serve their clans. They also train future warriors and newcomers. Warriors are given their full name after they complete their training.
Apprentices(4-12 moons) - Kits move out of the nursery at 4 moons (months) old. They are given their -paw name and a mentor, but will stay in camp for nearly two more months. From 4 to about 6 moons, apprentices will perform in-camp duties such as caring for the elders and queens, helping the medicine cats, and rebuilding dens. They may also leave camp with a warrior to collect moss. During this time, they are also learning the warrior code and the ways of the clan. At about 6 moons, their mentors begin hunting and battle training. Apprentices are usually finished with their training around the age of 12 moons when they undergo an assessment. Sometimes, they may earn their full warrior names due to performing highly in a significant event.
Newcomers welcomed into the clan also spend time as an apprentice learning the ways of the clan. They are given a clan -paw name and must complete the same duties as the other apprentices, no matter their age.
All apprentices must attend at least one gathering and visit the Star Pool once before or immediately after receiving their Warrior name.
Queens - Queens are she-cats expecting or caring for kits. They stay in the nursery until their kits are 4 moons old, when they return to their warrior duties.

Newcomers

Newcomers are welcome in the clans because of the strong memory of the clans' history. They believe that the newcomers can bring valuable new information to the clans. They have to go through rigorous training to prove themselves to the warriors. Those who can't make it give up and return to the twoleg place. Some newcomers bring herbs to the clans and are welcomed as medicine cats.

Special

Due to Skyclan's history, open territory, and very little cover, the fastest warriors with the best eyesight and senses are given the special responsibility to serve as scouts. They guard camp and join patrols to watch for birds of prey and foxes. Skyclan also digs and tunnels to create their camp.

Riverclan and Marshclan cats are excellent swimmers and are not bothered by getting their paws wet due to their territory.

Riverclan warriors usually specialize in either hunting on land or in water. Riverclan warriors have special battle tactics for use on shores and in water.

Forestclan cats are excellent climbers. They know how to hunt and travel in the trees. They have special battle tactics that use the trees to their advantage.

Marshclan warriors receive special training to hunt and fight potentially dangerous reptiles.

    Naming

Kits

Under normal circumstances, a queen will give her kits single part names based on their appearance or notable traits.
When they are a moon old and have started moving around, the leader will give them their two-part -kit name. The leader may name them based on:
1. The name chosen for them by their mother based on appearance/traits
2. Another name based on appearance/traits
3. A notable event around their birth
4. A notable family member
This occurs during a special ceremony, celebrating the kits' lives and excitement for the future of the clan. It is during this ceremony that the kits are presented and properly introduced to the rest of the clan. Before this point, only the parents, medicine cats, leader, and other queens have met the kits and know them by their single-part name.

If a kit is stillborn or very sickly where the medicine cats advise pre-naming, the leader will give him or her their two-part -kit name early so that they will be welcomed into Starclan.

Apprentices

Apprentices are given their -paw name at 4 moons of age. They usually keep their -kit prefix. Under special circumstances, however, the leader may decide to change their prefix.

Warriors

A warrior is given his or her full two-part warrior name after they complete their training. They typically keep their prefix and are given a suffix to replace -paw.
The leader may choose a suffix based on:
1. Something that describes them
2. A generic suffix
3. A notable event
4. A notable family member

Name Changes

Under special circumstances, a cat's name may be changed after they receive their full name. It is usually changed due to it not suiting the cat's appearance or personality.

    Ceremonies

Kit Ceremony

Apprentice Ceremony
The leader discusses who will mentor the kit first with the elder council, and then approaches the chosen mentor as a formality. It is rare that a mentor decline the chance to have an apprentice, but it has happened. The leader calls a clan meeting and stands level with the clan with his/her deputy and the kit's mentor beside him/her. The kits sit with their family until the leader calls them forward.
Leader: [kit], Starclan has watched you grow for four moons, and as it has been for generations before you, it is time for you to start your training to become a warrior. From this moment on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as [paw].
The leader touches his/her nose between the new apprentice's ears
Your mentor will be [warrior]. I am confident that (s)he will pass down all of his/her knowledge of what it means to be a warrior to you.
The mentor steps forward and touches his/her nose between the apprentice's ears. Then, the clan welcomes the new apprentice by their new name.

Warrior Ceremony
After a courageous act or an assessment, the leader, elders, and the apprentice's mentor meet to decide if the apprentice is ready to become a warrior. If they determine that the apprentice is ready, the leader calls a meeting and stands level with the clan. The clan's deputy and elders sit alongside the leader. The apprentice and his/her mentor sit with the clan until the apprentice is called forward.
Leader: I, [leader], leader of [clan], present [paw] to my warrior ancestors. (S)he has worked hard to learn the ways of our clan and our code, and I commend him/her to you as a warrior in his/her turn.
Leader: [paw], do you promise to uphold the warrior code and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?
Apprentice: I do.
Leader: Then by the powers of Starclan, I give you the name [warrior], for your [traits]. Your clan and your ancestors honor your [virtues], and welcome you as a full warrior of [clan].
The leader rests his/her muzzle on top of the new warrior's head, and the warrior bows in return. The clan welcomes the new warrior by their full name.

Elder Ceremony

Deputy Ceremony
When the previous deputy dies, retires, becomes leader, or is exiled, the new deputy must be chosen in time to sit with the leader at the next gathering. After the elder council decides on a small (2-4) selection of warriors, they bring the final choice to the leader. When the leader makes his/her decision, (s)he calls a meeting that night and stands above the clan with the elders backing him/her.
Leader: It is time to announce the new deputy of [clan]. I say these words under the stars so that Starclan (and the spirit of [old deputy] depending) may hear and approve my choice. [New deputy] has been a [trait] warrior of [clan], and I am proud to commend them to you as my new deputy.
The new deputy steps forward and bows to the leader and elders, and then to the clan as they welcome him/her to their new role by calling their name.
Deputy: Thank you. I will not let you, my clan, nor our ancestors down.

Name Change Ceremony

Leader Ceremony

Medicine Cat Apprentice Ceremony
The medicine cats and leader discuss the possibility of a kit becoming a medicine cat apprentice. If a kit chooses this path, the leaders and medicine cats decide who will be the kit's primary mentor. The leader calls a clan meeting and stands level with the clan with his/her deputy and the medicine cats beside him/her. The kits sit with their family until the leader calls them forward.
Leader: [kit], Starclan has watched you grow for four moons, and have invited you to tread among the stars. It is time to begin your training to become a medicine cat. From this moment on, until you receive your full name name, you will be known as [paw].
The leader touches nose between the new apprentice's ears
You will be trained by our medicine cats, but your primary mentor will be [medicine cat]. I am confident that (s)he will pass down all of his/her knowledge of what it means to be the clan's healer to you.
The mentor steps forward and touches his/her nose between the apprentice's ears. Then, the clan welcomes the new apprentice by their new name.

The new apprentice is presented to Starclan at the Star Pool at the next medicine cat gathering. The primary mentor stands next to a pool while the rest of the medicine cats stand behind the new apprentice.
Mentor: [paw], is it your will to accept Starclan's invitation to tread among the stars and live a life beyond what your clan can imagine?
Apprentice: It is.
The mentor beckons the apprentice forward with his/her tail.
Mentor: Then I present you to our ancestors. You have chosen the noble path of a medicine cat. May Starclan guide you and provide you with all of the wisdom you need to guide and heal your clan. It is time for you to take your first walk among the stars tonight.
The other medicine cats encourage the new apprentice until the new (s)he touches the pool with his/her nose and falls asleep before joining him/her at the pool.
