He wrote it down before the first page of his book. It would be the only promise he wouldn't break.

    They would celebrate in separate.

♛ - an eternal conundrum - ♛ // pg 172

    Why was it so hot?
The summer heat was making her aggravated. At first she simply rolled around the bed in frustration but a few seconds of that quickly sapped what strength she had left. Her weak fan did little to cool her body down, so she resigned herself to simply laying there. "Maybe I'll call-" well, actually who could she call to escape this heat with? New city new her, she didn't stick around to make many friends. It was getting too late to go to the pool anyway. So Instagram for now was her companion and means to forget the weather; watching random cooking videos that tempted her out of bed and towards the fridge.

Then she saw his page...Which was largely still the same aside from a new picture of his dog. He rarely updated, but she saw he was online right above their last short exchange and the 45 weeks next to it. Hey maybe she would send him that jazz song she found earlier. She never liked jazz but she remembered he did, plus she was curious what he was up to these days. Oh well what was the point, he'd probably just thank her for the song recommendation and she'd have to pry more conversation out him. Why was he awake right now anyway? It had to be early morning where he was, did he not sleep? Maybe she could mention that. Why do you even care? She imagined his response, though she knew he'd never actually say that.

"I'll just send the song and leave it alone."

So how you? I'm still the same, I can't sleep as usual.

    I do care, I shouldn't but I do. I'm sorry.

There were thousands of stars in the sky that night, but it was one star in particular that caught his eye.

His attention was drawn away from the night and back down to earth at the call of someone else. Inside everyone was talking and enjoying themselves; it was after all supposed to be a good time.

But he would have rather been alone with someone special.

And he wrote her many unsent letters that contained sentiments she couldn't feel or requite

He spent countless days sketching her likeness with an expression that would never look at him how he wanted

Penned her love songs that she would never know the words to, that she would never hear sung

He left his heart in paper, and perhaps he would cut a small part off and leave it for her

Still where he was found, where he was left, and where he would remain. Every attempt to leave found him walking in an ever-expanding hallway. So he would settle in one of the rooms which contained the phantoms of slain fantasies. People would come and go, even she would sometimes visit, but no matter who came or where he went, he was always alone, in that room.

    One of many.

    A star and a satellite.

Smaller than a planet, and so far away that little radiance could touch it.

    One of many.

Their voices gradually got more faint as he continued onward, eventually fading away into the background of his mind, and then they were no more. Of the many things he could outrun, the sound of his footsteps weren't among them.

She feared losing him, but more than that; she feared becoming accustomed to his absence
