We were outside with other people, enjoying food from a restaurant. In a moment of self-awareness, I looked at her and forgot about our surroundings, as though we were the only two people in the universe. I forgot about my problems and worries, and everything wrong with us. I'd keep this moment of content to remember. I smiled, and she paused mid-bite; "What?" and i thought it was cute but i didn't feel as though i could point that out, so i sighed softly and said "nothing."

rain pitter-pattered against the new york apartment windows, city noises and people could be vaguely heard outside, as usual. it was 2 am, and he laid there, phone and small tv playing adult swim were the only things dully illuminating the room. thumbing through Instagram, tired eyes observed pictures of his friends and family, risqué material and advertisements coupled with people showing off luxurious things. same old same old, he muttered in a low tone that reminded him of how sleepy he was. then he came to a picture of her. the sight made him inhale and his heart feel big. she was posing and smiling upon a hill the acropolis of athens in the backdrop. bitter-sweetly, he smiled, because she seemed happy.

he began to type in the comment but couldn't find the words to say. maybe that her new short haircut looked good on her, or perhaps something funny. still, his fingers couldn't just hit enter so he deleted it. he couldn't even bring himself to like the picture. all he could do is adjust his pillow as the memories came flooding back and he, in response, lost himself even further in instagram. even as his eyes burned, he simply couldn't fall asleep, or maybe he didn't want to.

"come with me tomorrow,"

"i can't."
