"We Could Be Heroes." - [flo's challenge]

Postby munchqueen » Sat Jan 21, 2017 5:10 am

Her pale green eyes were blank as she stared out at the rain-soaked street. Every once in a while, a car would drive past, spraying water as it went; aside from this, however, the only sound heard was the soft drumming of rain against the window pane.

"Hey," a man's gentle voice interrupted the soft pattering of the water against the window.

Involuntarily, Blaire turned to look, even though she knew who it was.

"Hey, Koda," she said quietly. She had tried to put more interest into it, but it came out as half-hearted as she felt, and it hurt her even more when she saw his face fall. It was a combination of understanding, sympathy, and concern; Koda would know that something was bothering her, he always knew.

"What's wrong?" He asked quietly, his brow furrowed slightly.

But Blaire just shook her head, turning back to the window. Her shoulders sagged, and her elbows rested on her knees; one hand was reached up to her face, and she rested her chin in her palm, staring forwards blankly. "You know what's wrong," she answered, her voice almost a whisper.

Blaire felt the bench sag, and she knew that he had sat down beside her. "Mom," he confirmed simply, staring forwards. Out of the corner of her eye, Blaire saw him look down, his jaw clenched. It was a tough subject for both of them; and yet, every year, they are reminded of the day she died. She never found clarity, never found peace, not even in the moments before she took her last breath. Blaire remembered standing there, wishing that she had never been born; if she and Koda had never been brought into he picture, her mother would have had the chance to live her life. She would have had a chance at happiness.

"She did love us, you know," Koda said, looking up at the ceiling, a deep breath vibrating in his chest. "She didn't regret keeping us. She told you, she told me."

Blaire did not move. "But if she had given us up, or if she had never even made the mistake of dating that man in the beginning, she would have been happy. She would have been alive." She looked over at Koda, and though he met her gaze steadily, she could tell that he was unsure. He stared for a few moments before finally turning away, looking down, his jaw clenching again, but only for a brief moment.

"Remember when we got lost in that field?" He asked, though he was obviously not expecting an answer. "It was the middle of winter. We would have frozen to death if we were out there any longer." Koda said, beginning to recite the story. "Mom had just taken her medications, like she did at the same time every evening. She probably just wanted to sleep, you know how they made her; tired, disoriented. She hardly knew where she was going when she took those, so she stayed in bed." A brief pause; it may have seemed like it was to let his words sink in, but Blaire knew that it was probably because he was trying not to cry. "But she still went out to find us. She probably saved our lives, Blaire. She wouldn't have done that if she didn't love us."

Blaire looked over at Koda for a brief moment, then out the window, then at the ground. "Maybe," she said. "But it just... It makes me feel awful. She worked so hard, she helped us. She was our hero that night, and she still is. She's the reason we're alive, and who we are today. I've never done anything like that."

"But you can," Koda insisted, his voice sincere. "You will. You might already be someone's hero, you just don't know it. Anyone could be a hero. We could be heroes."

Blaire nodded, lifting her head to stare out at the street once again. "I know," she told him. "But we can also be villains."

@Munch : That's so sad... ): I think you wrote this one really well, it definitely made me get a little teary. I think the last line Blaire spoke is so true and that it had a big impact on this one-shot with such a strong and kind of dark sentence.

Your writing is so good, I can't wait to read more!

Ahh, I'm glad I made you tear up. I take that back, it sounds strange. xD
Really, I was thinking about this last night, imagining if it had been a live-action scene; Blaire, sitting there, the rain pattering against the window. At the beginning, it would be the only noise, so it would be kind of loud. A car would pass, then a few more moments of rain. And then Koda would walk in, leaning against the door frame.

Anyway, it makes me sad. But it was interesting to write! ;-;

@Munch : I can totally imagine that scene with your descriptive writing. I'm the same too, I get all sad when I write sad things.

"We Should Be Lovers..." - [flo's challenge]

Postby munchqueen » Sun Jan 22, 2017 2:08 pm

"Blaire!" Angela scolded, her voice disbelieving. "That is an awful, evil dare!"

"Are you kidding?" Blaire asked, cackling madly. "It's a brilliant idea! Come on, Koda, give her a kiss!"

The dark-haired woman looked to her brother, eyes bright with mischievousness. Angela was busy trying to hide her eyes, and Koda stared, avoiding looking to his right at all costs; this was because Rosie sat there. Rosie, however, seemed to agree with Blaire, and made a purring noise - or as close to one as a human could get - as she scooted closer to Koda.

"Aw, come on, Koda!" She urged, staring at the side of his face as she waited for him to look over; he wouldn't be able to stay like that forever. "It's not a big deal, is it?"

But Koda just stared, bringing his hand up to his face for a brief moment. "We are too old to be playing this, I don't know why I agreed!" He exclaimed. "And you!" He said, pointing an accusing finger at Blaire. "You didn't tell me that she -" a quick thumb jab in Rosie's direction, "- was going to be here!"

At this, Rosie pouted, leaning back. "Oh, come on, Koda!" She whined. "I'm not that bad, am I? Plus, it's only one kiss! Don't be a chicken." She stuck out her chin, making puppy-dog eyes as he finally glanced over, his eyes showing slight annoyance. He had never wanted to play the game, everyone knew that, but Blaire had somehow convinced him.

"Fine," he said eventually, after several seconds of contemplation. He had already used his only 'chicken out' when Spirit had asked him who he had a crush on (a very juvenile question, he had pointed out), after which Blaire had begun prancing around and clucking madly. He stood, and so did Rosie, who threw her arms out, giggling her signature 'you're not the first, and certainly not the last', giggle. He didn't even have time to sigh before she reached up, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and planting a kiss on his lips.

Koda heard Angela let out a little shriek; he could only assume that she had hidden her face, as if it was wrong for her to watch, while Blaire was uncharacteristically silent. It was odd; the whole time, the only thing that he could think about was the fact that it didn't feel wrong, like he had expected it to. Then again, nothing about Rosie ever felt wrong; that was what made her so irresistible, and so toxic. However, when she pulled away, that is when it felt wrong. It felt wrong that it was over. He didn't go back, and he didn't step away; of course, the latter was because he didn't really have a choice, as Rosie still had her arms wrapped around his neck.

"We should be lovers," she suggested quietly, but Koda just let out a short scoff.

"That didn't work out so well last time," he said. "I doubt that it would this time."

Rosie nodded, looking down and letting go of her hold on his shoulders before stepping back. At first, she almost seemed disappointed, but as she looked back up, Koda realized that this assumption was quite wrong; her face had returned to the same, playfully seductive expression that she always wore. Her signature style. Koda cleared his throat, stepping back and looking away, only for his eyes to land on his sister, whose face wore a look of realization, amusement, and wonder, all at the same time. She let out a little, cough-like noise, but it sounded oddly choked, like she was holding back something else. Koda stared a moment, and their eyes met; he was the one to break the shared gaze, so he would never know what Blaire had been thinking.

"Right, then," he said, an awkward silence in the room. "Let's do something else."

________________________________________________________________________

Starring;
Blaire, who, if you've read the last few prompts, you might already know about. Turns out, she is a trickster as well as everything else; what a personality!
Koda, Blaire's twin brother, was introduced in the last prompt, "We Could Be Heroes", a scene with a deeper, more solemn meaning than this. In both, you see him for exactly who he is; a serious, no time wasted kind of guy. For the most part, anyway.
Angela, or Spirit, a character owned by Ultimatefangirling, was also introduced in a previous prompt. In this prompt, she's mostly just been taken along for the ride, but an interesting ride at that...
Rosie, a new addition to this writing challenge, is a character created by MyFairLady. She is a player and a flirt, and she and Koda share some interesting history... Maybe you'll find out, someday. Until then, however, Rosie seems keen on staying on the path that she already follows.

@Munch : Ahh, I'm liking Koda even more. Can you give him to me? This is cute but serious at the same time and I love Rosie's personality. I think she's a nice addition to the group of characters you have and I can't wait to read more! Amazing one-shot as usual!

@200765
Ahh, Koda is my baby, I ruv him. <3
I love Rosie too, her personality is brilliant; on the outside, she makes herself seem so simple, but on the inside, she is infinitely complex. You will certainly be seeing her around more often. c;
I'm so glad that you like these one-shots. I'm trying to write one every day, keep the creative juices flowing. xD
