The Beginning

The men were everywhere.
The nurses ran around, helping the injured, even the enemy nurses helped their foe, for they were still humans, and nothing more.
One patient, a nurse's older lover, whom she fought for before he left for war, was her last patient of the day.
"Do you need anything?" She asked after she finished bandaging his wounds. They were bad, but she didn't want to think about his protruding bones.
"You."
"Pardon?"
"I need you. You fought. I refused. Oh, I'm so stupid... I just never thought you of all people... would fight."
She realized he was slipping into the abyss of death.
"No!" She cried, tears streaming her face as she grasped his hands and he took his last shattering breaths.
"I loved you. I still do. Please know that my very last wish was to be your man, loyally and fully, living to protect you. But here we are, in this shattered world, still piecing ourselves together. You will find another half of your self eventually. Fate just decided what our hearts could not."
The nurse cursed loudly as his hands slowly went limp.
"Goodbye."
