- "There were once two sisters
who were not afriad of the dark
because the dark was full of the other's voice
across the room,
because even when the night was thick
and starless
they walked home together from the river
seeing who could last the longest
without turning on her flashlight,
not afraid
because sometimes in the pitch of night
they'd lie on their backs
in the middle of the path
and look up until the stars came back
and when they did,
they'd reach their arms up to touch them
and did."

- xxOne bed in the room was occupied, the other lay barren and empty. The princess lay sleeping in the taken bed, breath being inhaled and exhaled slowly, chest rising and falling with each of these simple actions. The dog lay at the foot of her magnificent bed alert and aware, cautious of everything that dared make a sound. The other bed belonged to the princess's sister. Her sister had been missing for years, and it seemed inevitable that she would never be found, at least not alive, but the princess refused to have the bed taken away as she kept clinging onto shreds of desperate hope. Unfortunately, the straws she was grasping at would never yield any results. The dog had been placed in the room after this unfortunate incident, picked by the princess herself out of a handful of others. She was a female, a fine German Shepard, and her coat consisted of long and course black fur. Her eyes were the colour of recently ripened hazelnuts. She knew her job was to protect the princess to the best of her ability - no, even better than the best of her abilities.
Her large ears twitched in recognition of a sound, head turning towards the window, acknowledging it. Eyes fixes solely on that window, her heart filled with dread as there was a click, and then the sight of the window sliding open with silent ease. Paws moved quickly, and she was standing, fur bristling, teeth bared at the intruder, warning him without words. He only ignored her warnings, and advanced farther into the room, approaching the bed, laying hands on the princess, pulling her from her down sheets roughly. Growls erupted from her throat, a sharp bark as the princess was yanked from her bed and slumber. Although the princess began to struggle, it was to no avail - the man had a tight grip on her nightclothing.
