--------I was born into this job; a family business which claimed the lives of all who had received even a trickle of the blood that ran through my ancestors's veins. It didn't just trickle through my veins, though, it had flooded through my lineage for centuries. I was of noble birth and righteous name. The duties of all those who came before fell onto my shoulders now, and their responsibilities, as well as their burdens, became my own. I had never wondered what it might be like to live a life of my choosing; there simply was no time to day dream. I had a duty to those who came before, to my country, and to the royal family that I was bred to protect and serve.
--------I awoke to the echoing sounds of a terrible battle, and all evidence of sleep was immediately rushed from my body and mind. There was a light rustling of fabrics as I shot up from where I previously lay on the marble floors outside of the royal chambers. I knew precisely what I was to do in a situation like this, but there was a pause just now, a moment when I felt my bones weld themselves to the floor. It was a fear that gripped me tightly and fed my hesitation. I stood, unmoving, listening to the clatter and clang of light sword and sturdy shield; prolonged, gentle screech ringing in my ears as more swords were drawn from their shieths. The heavy armor of guards rang furiously thoughout the grand halls as they tried desperately to make it to the scene of the upheaval. I watched on as shadows battled one another on the wall of the corridor that lead to the Princess' chambers. A low growl began to work its way from my throat as the reality of the chaos was finally processed within my thoughts.
--------I was suddenly yanked from my frozen state, turning on my heels just in time to see a dark figure in an obscure black cloak hurriedly shuffling behind me, coming the opposite direction of the struggle. He had somehow managed to sneak past the guards, and over his shoulders was slung a feminine figure. Her hair was disheveled and her usual regal attire was exchanged for a loose-fitting night dress. A thin cloth had been forcibly tied around her mouth so as to keep her from making any noise, and her hands were bound in an effort to keep her from struggling. She appeared to be unconcious as she lulled about the cloaked man's broud shoulders, but her eyes shot open wide and immediately fell on my gaze. She began to thrash about violently, and the man had to tighten his grip to ensure his hold of the young woman.
--------The violent wielding of weaponry had begun to slow, until there was a final stroke of a blade through flesh and a thud that followed shortly after. Another figure, also in a dark cloak, though more feminine in appearance, rushed from the now silent corner. The loud thundering of more guards could be heard in the background, but I knew that they would not reach the princess in time. I bit out at the leg of the feminine figure as it passed, ripping a corner of fabric from her pants, as well as removing a rather sizeable chunck of skin. She wailed as she swiftly drew her blade from its shieth, and buried it deep into my ear. The tip had been sliced so that it dangled only from a thin strip of skin and bloodied fur. I whined but still ran after the two criminals and the princess. The two of them ran down a ladder they had built from sturdy wood, and immediately after they reach the bottom, Princess in hand, they felled the ladder with a swift kick to its base. And with that, they fled into the cover of the pitch black night.
