The sound of hospital socks skid across glossy tiles, patients moaned out for their morning meals. A short girl strode forward, one foot in front of the other as if she were in front of a circus crowd, walking a thin tightrope. But said tightrope was just a string of mishandled pills and a bandaged hand. The girl had pale, icy skin and obsidian-grey hair that framed her oval face and curled at her midsection. She opened the door to the cafeteria, the cold air pricking at her skin, causing goosebumps to rise across her collarbone. She swiped one finger across the hair that covered her freckled forehead so that she could see properly. She tucked the black hair behind her ear before continuing her journey for mini pancakes and over-sugared syrup, her favorite breakfast - and only breakfast served - since she was a child. She strode over to the buffet-like bar, full of fruits, veggies and pancakes. She questioned her slim choices, quietly placing a bandaged finger on her hollowed cheek and tapping it as if she were in deep thought. She shrugged and spooned some raspberries and oranges onto her plate, alongside at least five pancakes and a half a cup of maple syrup. She shakily took her pale green tray and lumbered over to a table against the white walls. She sat on the seat closest to the wall and leaned against it, letting a deep breath escape from her rosy lips.
A lanky boy sauntered over to the girl’s table, sitting down across from her. His dark hair framed his face as did hers, his wintry blue gaze attempting to catch the girl’s. A crooked smile painted itself across her face as she traced her fingernail across her tray. He eyed her suspiciously, rubbing the palm of his hand across his jawline.
“Laurenne, did you take your pills?” He questions anxiously, tapping his fingers against the table. The tapping stopped as the girl receded her hand from the tray and piled them in her lap before staring at them. He cleared his throat before deciding to speak again.
“Laurenne..” He commented sternly. She let out a small sigh before barely shaking her head. She ripped a piece of paper from a poster that had been taped to the wall.
“Medication Advice, room 194, at 7 pm this Wednesday! Dr. True and Dr. Harris!” It had read. Now, the only thing showing was “Medication Advice, Room 194!” She scribbled something on the pastel green paper with a dull pencil tip. She faced it to the boy.
‘ ‘ you arnt my boss , greyson ‘ ‘ It read. He motioned for the girl to give him the pencil and erased the E in his name and replaced it with an A.
“You’re right, i’m not, but i’m also very worried about everyone in this damn facility, silly.” He snickered, cocking his head. He focused his attention on a patient farther down in the cafeteria. Said patient had short, blonde bobbed hair and red-rimmed glasses.
“That’s Gale.” He commented. “She has depression and anxiety, just like you. Don’t you want to meet her?” He quipped. You could hear the smile in his voice. She looked up and opened one eye. Her eyes were a deep cobalt blue, the color that only the depths of the Pacific Ocean held. She noiselessly shook her head as she locked her gaze with Grayson, as if she were challenging him.
He groaned as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms in his lap. "Then I am bringing her over here, Laurie. You know that, don't you?" He paraded away and Laurenne trailed after him like a lost child. She prodded at his hand as they approached Gale. The lanky girl turned, her glasses just barely leaning off of her nose.
"Oh- Hi, Grayson." She smiled at him and then fixed her focus to the short girl next to him. "..And this is? I haven't seen you before. You were just added to the roll call, right?" Gale shot questions at Laurenne, making her flinch. Grayson held his arm in front of Laurenne so she could hold it. She gripped it and started tapping her fingernails against his skin, a nervous habit of hers. Gale eyed the girl with ebony hair. Grayson wasn't very irritated by her act, as he was used to it by now. Laurenne shared a hospital room with another patient, but said patient had only been added to roll-call this morning and they were still roaming the hospital halls. Because of this, Laurenne often snuck into Grayson’s room and slept in the chair - the staff didn’t seem to care at that point.
"This is Laurenne. You guys have the same mental illnesses. Shocker, huh?" He nudged her forward towards Gale. Gale looked at her and then to Grayson.
"..Do you expect me to feel sympathy?" She croaked, her tone foul by now. Grayson shrugged.
"I mean, Alexithymia.. You don't feel emotions, right? Something like that." He questioned with a cocked head. The blonde's expression fell flat as she pretended to be a robot.
"Yessss.. I am a robot.." She moaned out before standing upright again. She patted Laurenne's head and waved to Grayson before trailing away. Grayson looked to the girl quietly scratching at his arm and lead her out of the cafeteria as well.
"Time to take your pills, then."
