Anakin awoke the next day to a beam of sunlight pouring in from the hospital window. Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Padme were sitting on the couch again. “Hello.” He said cautiously.
Ahsoka smiled. “Hello. How are you doing today?” What she really meant was, “Do you remember anything?”
“Still in pain.” Anakin wasn't as cheerful as he normally was, but at least he didn't seem as lost and confused as he was yesterday. “I...I think I found a memory last night. From when I was younger.”
Ahsoka and Padme both leaned forward expectantly. “Do you remember what you saw? Any important names or places?” Padme asked hopefully.
“A…..A desert. Lots of coarse, rough, irritating sand. And a race. A pod race. I won it. People were congratulating me. And then I met you.” He pointed to Obi-Wan. “And a beautiful woman with long brown hair.”
Padme smiled softly. Coarse, rough, and irritating. That was how Anakin had described sand to her before they had been married. “You were the best pod racer Anakin. You built it yourself. You were always good at fixing things.” Padme used a quote of his, hoping he would recognize it.
He didn't. “Was I?” Anakin inquired, trying to remember ever fixing anything. It all came back blank. He began to grow frustrated, frowning impatiently. “I..I don't remember fixing anything.”
“It's alright Anakin.” Obi-Wan said patiently. “You'll remember soon enough. Let's not push him Senator Amidala. You too Ahsoka.”
“I'm sorry Anakin.” Padme apologized. “I guess I had just hoped that it would bring something back.”
“Don't apologize Senator Amidala. It's not your fault. Have I always been this impatient?” He asked Obi-Wan.
“As a young child, no. As a teenager, most definitely yes.” Obi-Wan said fondly. “I've often had to remind you to be patient, but it was almost always in vain.”
There was a knock at the door, and a medic came in. “Just a routine check, and master Obi-Wan, there's someone downstairs who wants to talk to you. Another Jedi I think.”
Obi-Wan said good-bye to Anakin, then stepped out, Ahsoka following close behind. “Why didn't Anakin ever tell me he was a pod racer?”
Obi-Wan stopped and looked Ahsoka in the eye. “Ahsoka, there were many parts of Anakin's history that he'd very much rather forget. Especially in his younger years, before his time as a Jedi.”
“You mean Anakin wasn't a Jedi from birth?” Ahsoka was surprised. Most Jedi were at the temple by the time they were about two years old.
“No. Anakin was much older than most. He was about nine. You see Ahsoka...” Obi-Wan stopped explaining, since they had come across the Jedi that had been waiting for them.
“Obi-Wan, Padawan Tano, how is young Skywalker, hm?”
“Anakin is fine, Master Yoda, but he won't be going anywhere for a while. The hospital wants to keep him in medical custody until he's fully recovered.”
“Then recover quickly, he must. Needed in the temple, young Skywalker is.” Yoda spoke in his own special syntax, which everyone around him had grown to love and easily understand.
“Yes Master Yoda, although there is one slight….complication. Anakin seems to have….developed amnesia.” Obi-Wan said carefully.
Yoda didn't seem surprised, and somehow Obi-Wan wondered if maybe he already knew. “Troubling, this new development is. On Skywalker, keep a close eye, you must.”
“Yes Master Yoda.” Obi-Wan bowed respectfully, Ahsoka following suit, then turned around to go back to Anakin's room.
Anakin had watched Obi-Wan and Ahsoka leave, wishing they would stay. He felt like a helpless child. The medic had finished the routine check and left as well. “Senator Amidala…..What do I look like?”
Padme felt like crying, but she couldn't. Not in front of Anakin. Not when she needed to be strong for him. “You're….You're beautiful. I'll get you a mirror tomorrow so you can see for yourself. Dark blond hair, beautiful blue eyes, a strong proud smile…..” Padme faltered. Should she tell him about the scar? Or would that raise more questions?
“Thank you...Padme.” Anakin smiled. That name felt more natural. “How….How well did we know each other? You seem so familiar, but I just can't place why.”
Padme fought back a fresh wave of tears. “We….knew each other very well Anakin. You were….You are, my best friend.” She decided to not tell him they were married, not yet. It may be too much of a shock.
Anakin pondered a question, and voiced it aloud after building up his courage. “Padme….can you tell me…...How did we meet? I want to know.”
Padme took a calming breath before answering. “We...we met at a shop on Tatooine. You were working there. I was looking for parts for my ship.” It was the truth, but only half of it.
“Tatooine.” Anakin said the planet's name with a sort of disdain, as if it were the worst thing he could think of. “I remember the sand, and the heat, and the noise of a crowd. I didn't like that planet, did I?”
A sharp knock sounded at the door, and Ahsoka and Obi-Wan came inside. “Hey Anakin, feeling any better?” Ahsoka sat next to Padme on Anakin's bed.
“A little. Padme told me what I look like. She's going to bring me a mirror tomorrow. She told me how we met.” Anakin smiled with a sort of childish joy, like he was enjoying re-discovering his friends.
Padme stood up, still smiling from their brief exchange. “I'll see you later Anakin. I have some business to attend to in the senate.” She started towards the door.
“Good-bye Padme.” Anakin called after her. “I'll see you tomorrow.” He seemed disappointed that Padme had to leave, but being confined to his bed, could do nothing about it.
Obi-Wan followed Padme outside. “What all did you tell Anakin?” He kept his voice tone calm and even, but Padme could tell he was worried.
“Relax, I didn't tell him everything. Just….half of it. I told him he worked at a ship dealer and that I met him looking for parts for my ship. Nothing more. You two came back before he could ask any real questions.”
“Good. Hopefully Anakin will begin to recover his memories on his own, without us having to prompt him, although I fear if he recovers them too quickly it may leave a traumatic imprint on his life.”
Later that night, after Ahsoka had left, Anakin decided he didn't want to sit around helplessly anymore. He had been given medicine for his pain, and therefore didn't feel like anything was wrong. Slowly, he managed to ease out of the bed, took one step….and promptly fell down. “Ow.” He muttered quietly. “Okay, not such a good idea.” To top it off, the nurse was back with a dinner tray.
“Mister Skywalker, what on Coruscant are you doing?” She scolded, bending down to help him back onto the bed.
“Trying to walk.” Anakin blushed profusely. He felt like a child caught in the act of sneaking a sweet, embarrassed and sheepish.
“As injured as you are? Honestly, I leave a patient alone for one second and then he decides he's better? Of all the luck. Mister Skywalker I'm sorry but you're going to have to be a little more patient than that.”
“I'm sorry….” Anakin read the nurse's name badge, “Shakira.” He settled back in bed, sighing quietly. “I'll try.”
“You'd better.” She teased good-naturedly, setting down the tray and leaving the room.
After Anakin had finished dinner, with little else to do and getting increasingly bored, he slowly drifted off to sleep.
His dream started quickly, a yellow speeder rushing through the busy traffic of Coruscant. It This time Anakin couldn't see himself, it was like watching a holo-recording. The speeder was chasing after another, much farther ahead. Anakin saw someone leap from the yellow speeder and recognized the person as himself. Another memory! After forcing the other speeder to the ground, Dream-Anakin ran after the fleeing woman, chasing her towards a club. The scene faded out slowly, switching to another, this time a grand looking palace. “Anakin, stay in that fighter” It was the man from his dream last night. Qui-Gon. The Anakin in this memory was young, about nine. He flipped a few controls, accidentally causing the fighter's engine to burst to life, racing outside the hanger and taking off towards the stars. Real-Anakin got a rush of adrenalin as he watched the fighter be maneuvered by this young child, by him. A few moments later, and a space station had exploded, destroyed by a couple of well-placed yet accidental shots to their main power supply. “Now this is podracing!” The child yelled excitedly, heading back for the surface of the planet. It faded out again, coming into focus on a small shop on the planet with sand that Anakin recalled was named Tatooine. He saw the beautiful girl with her back turned, and young him sitting on a counter. He looked at the girl and said, “Are you an angel?” The girl started to turn around, but sunlight blocked her face, and the dream disappeared.
