(This is Bruneydog's sister -- I don't have an account on CS but I wanted to make a post here. I usually go by Rolf on the internet.)
So, I have this story that I'm working on which involves these three U.S. government files, code-named File X, File Y, and File Z. These files contain important information that the government would NOT want getting out to opposing parties (like, terrorists). The whole story kinda revolves around the files; the main character gets recruited to a science organization to build/research this technology/these files for the government. Earlier, one of the government agents themselves stole copies of one of these files for a terrorist group.
The way I'm thinking, is that the government had these files but kinda put them on the back-burner for a while, but after the copy of the file was stolen, they get worried and want to complete the research/information in these files before the terrorist group/anyone else does. Also, another opposing organization is working to get a hold of these files as well.
The main character eventually realizes that something about these files/information/technology is immoral or dangerous, so he tries to convince everybody to stop developing them.
Basically the whole story is just stopping the baddies from getting these files.
The problem is, I don't know what kind of information/research should even be in these files. Is it research for a weapon? Some type of classified information? A scientific formula of some sort? Some type of supercomputer or other technology? A sustainable energy thing? (I kinda thought of something like the flippin' Tesseract, but I don't want a Captain America/Avengers rip-off, so I may not go in that sustainable energy direction.)
Really, I just need some type of information that would be contained in these files, which the government would not want let out, and that they would hire a scientist to do research on it. Also, the files have to have something about them that the Main Character finds immoral/dangerous eventually.
Also, this story is most likely going to take place in the 1980s-1990s. But it'll be a sort of alternate reality, so they can have more advance technology for their time, if necessary. Even "Science-fiction" technology, if you may.
Summary (TL;DR):
-Hoping for it to feel like a spy-story. There's gonna be lots of espionage here. (Just to help you get the feel for the story.)
-Main character is set in USA, (but he is German by heritage.)
-Main character is a university science professor that gets recruited by the government to do further research on the information found in the XYZ Files.
-1980s-1990s timeset, but can have science-fiction technology. (Alternate reality)
-Centers around three US government files (X, Y, and Z) containing important classified information.
-The XYZ Files must have something immoral/dangerous about them that the Main Character eventually discovers.
-They also must have something that terrorist groups/other countries would desire.
-Btw, I don't want any "superheros" or "superenhanced humans" in this story, it's not about that. I don't want it to be a Marvel comic xD
----I need to figure out what exactly these XYZ Files contain. (A weapon, classified information, a scientific formula, a supercomputer/other technology, a sustainable energy thing?)
So basically, can any of you help me out with a few ideas? Advice? It would be much appreciated.
