*May never finish*
I hear a crack of thunder and quickly sit up from my bed of leaves. "Oh," I whisper to myself as I see the lightning withdraw back into the dark sky. A scarring memory from my kittenhood tries surface, but I swallow it down and rest my head between my paws and close my eyes.
I cannot sleep though. The sound thunder echoes in my head, slowly morphing itself into a gunshot and I am taken back in time to when I was young.
I see my mother, a beautiful calico named Mercy. I see her prowling in the woods, with me and my siblings bouncing noisily behind her. A young human male, probably about 15 years old, is hidden well against the forest backdrop, wearing camouflage. We don't notice him. I see a deer nearby, and so does the human. He lifts his gun as we tumble near him, still oblivious of his existence. He holds his breath and is about to pull the trigger when I meow loudly. The deer takes flight as the human tries to get a clear shot. It is too late though, the deer is gone.
My mother was the nearest to him, just a couple yards away. The human notices my mother, and, trembling in anger, points his gun at her and takes a shot at her stomach. As she falls, her screams are cut short by the blood she coughs up. We foolish kittens just stare in disbelief. It takes another gunshot and a fallen sister for us to snap back into reality and run for our lives. One by one we drop until there is only me and two brothers left. The human is far behind us now, but we keep running,
The wind is knocked out of me and I wake up with my Prowl jumping on me.
