C h a p t e r O n e

February 11, Year 50.

I was sleeping peacefully when my mother woke me, i turn against her and murmured an sleepy "Go'way" she shook me again, that woman was persistent, "Mira, there hatching!" i shot up, yanking the thick bedspread of my body, "Ill be right there" i said, and she left, hurrying down the stairs. The eggs were hatching, finally, it had been six months since they were laid, and two since the first egg hatched, we were hoping for a mutation, seeing as these remaining eggs had taken longer to incubate.
I hastily pulled my nightgown over my head, and rummaging through a few messy piles of clothes, found a shirt and a skirt, i dressed, and headed down stairs, grabbing a heavy shawl on the way out.
Even though i had seen dragons hatch a hundred times or more, i still always loved to see them emerge from there shells, small and vulnerable, the miracle of life, of course, seeing what colors and variant's we got each year was also good fun.
I tried to be quite going down the long flight of stairs to the kitchen, my siblings rooms were all situated haphazardly along the stair case, mine was one of the highest, (it was also the coldest i might add) and my younger brothers was situated directly across the hallway from mine, (i don't know how, but his is always warm, despite being as high up as mine, is not really fair) and i didn't want to wake any of them, for a new they would get on my case about it later if i did.
Thankfully my thick socks helped quell the noise, though the creaking was still rather loud.
I reached the base of the stairs and darted towards the kitchen, banging myself into a corner of the large wooden table that sat in the dining room, reaching the kitchen, i glanced at the clock, 5:23 it read, much earlier than i would normally be awake, i then hastened towards the door that stood to the left of the counter, it was open, my mother had forgotten to shut it, and it was now frigidly cold.
I rummaged through the assembly of shoes that were lined at the side of the door, and finding my boots i tugged them on, i then realized that they were not mine, but my brothers. Swearing, i pulled them off, and found my own.
Finally ready, i hurried out the door, carful to shut it behind me, and headed towards the barn, pulling my shawl closer to my body, it was much too cold to hatch dragons, especially if any of the fire eggs were hatching, Mum, hadn't told which eggs were hatching, and i could wait to see, i didn't want to miss it.
It was a long way out to the nursery barn, all the dragon barns were built well away from the house, my father had learned this the hard way, when an adolescent inferno dragon burn down the house in an innocent play fight, we had to live in the sheep barn whilst it was being rebuilt, a good long distance from the dragon barn.
I picked up a fast trot, hoping to get there faster, and also warm myself up, i past the horse barn, and zoomed past the lake, as i went past it, a pale pinkish head popped out, followed by several others, the water dragons stared at me as i hurried past, most likely hoping for a treat, there was no time now, looked at them apologetically before continuing on, there heads disappearing into the water as i left.
I reached the nursery barn, and bypassing the enormous double doors a the front, i took the side entrance, a heavy door with a sturdy lock and an iron handle, seeing as it was unlocked i assumed my mother must have had gone this way too.
Entering, i inhaled, the smell of clean straw and dusty rafters was overwhelming, the barn was not as big as the other dragon barns, but was still quite large, i passed through a hallway, two stalls on either side of me, each one contained a adolescent wind dragon, all about the size of a horse, they would need to be moved to the adult barn soon, so they could stretch their wings in the aviary.
I passed the stalls, making sure not to wake the inhabitants, and made my way to the incubator, checking each dragon was sleeping, young dragons could be very loud, and the baby's needed a warm quite environment in order to hatch properly, the exception being ice dragons, who could hatch at any temperature and in any amount of chaos.
I reached the incubator, a insulated room of to one corner of the barn, and entered it, discarding my shawl at the door.
A wave of heat hit me in the face as i went in, my mother was there, sweating, she had hiked her skirt up, and tied it above her knees, in an attempt to relieve the heat, she beckoned me with her hand, pressing a finger to her lips, warning me to be silent.
She stood in front of a large tank, which contained several eggs, all varying slightly in color, but all some shade of blue, it was hard to tell there exact shape in the water, but i had put these eggs in the water when they had been laid, the waters were hatching, i knew exactly which one Mum had locked her eyes on, a smallish egg with a purplish hue, it had a fine crack running though it. Turning to me Mum whispered "I think this one might be an Equus" she rose, and pulled a bucket from the side of the room, placing a towel from the shelves against the wall over it, she patted it invitingly, i sat.
"Its quite small" i whispered back, a small egg was not good, it could mean that the baby inside had not had enough room to grow, resulting in either, a smaller dragon, or a deformity, neither were good.
"I know" she said, "Its not to bad though, i think it'll be fine" i hoped so.
Our attention was brought back to the tank when a slight cracking noise resounded through the water and into the air, the crack had grown, and we could see a small nose poking through the shell, all that was visible was the bump of an egg horn.
Another crack, we could see most of the face now, eyes tightly shut, the little dragon stilled. The light was not very could, so i could tell the color quite yet, but it appeared to be some shade of pink, it would make sense, considering its mother was a pale pink and purple striped water equus my father had named stripe, (not very original i know, my father was never been good with names) in fact, she was the dragon that had popped her head out of the lake and watched me, perhaps she had known her baby was hatching.
Finally, with one last loud crack, the baby emerged, a small pink equus, shaped like a seahorse with pale blueish fins, and small straight horns, that were cover in the same scales as the rest of the body ,about the size of a small pekinese dog, a female, you could tell by the horn shape, the males had curly horns at birth, while females were straight. as she grew the horns would get longer, reaching the back of her equine neck, if she had been a male, they would curl several time, resembling a ram.
My mother jumped up and hugged me, i hugged her back, an equus was good news, see mutations like ice's, and equus' were more valuable than the ancient variety's, they were less common, and harder to get, in fact, my family's farm is the only one in Apivion that breeds mutaions.
As my mother released me, and began to prepare an individual tank for the baby, we heard another crack, turning around, we saw another egg crack open.
