The Dogs: (1) The story of Goldenstar

Postby vampirebanquet » Wed Feb 10, 2016 4:19 pm

This is a story based highly off of warriors. It's about dogs that live in clans. I wrote this about a year or two ago, so it's not that good. On with the story!

1:
Hunnie was just your normal pet golden retriever. She loved her Family and dog life.So there she sat, alone in her backyard. The Twolegs put her out there so she could do her business. She pawed at the ground. Excitement needed to happen fast. Suddenly, A whir of brown swished in front of her. She twitched her whiskers. She sniffed the air. Rats. She thought. The brown blur came to a stop and two rats were standing in front of Hunnie. Hunnie held out her paw. The two rats sniffed the paw and climbed up Hunnie’s arm. They stood on her shoulder. Then, Hunnie saw a flash of black and white. She looked around and sniffed the air. The black and white blur came to a stop and bit at Hunnie’s shoulder. Hunnie yowled with pain.
“Sorry!” The black and white thing said.
Hunnie opened her eyes. She saw a big black and white Bernese mountain dog. “Why’dya do that!” Hunnie exclaimed.
“Again, I'm really sorry.” The dog said. He held out his paw. “My name is Patches. What’s your’s?” Patches asked.
“Oh, uh- Hunnie.” Hunnie said nervously as she licked her wound clean.
“Ah, Honey. One of my favorite foods.” Patches said.
“Oh, no… It’s spelt H-u-n-n-i-e. Not like the food the yellow buzzys make.” Hunnie pawed at the ground.
“Oh.” Said Patches. He then looked at the two rats on Hunnie’s shoulder. He snapped at the two rats and held them in his mouth. Hunnie gasped. With one big crunch, the two rats were killed in his mouth.
“Mmm…” He said. He spit one out of his mouth. “Try it.” He said.
“Why should I?” Hunnie asked.
“You were descended off of wolves.” Patches started. “They ate rats and other small creatures. You should live like them.” Patches said, spitting out bones. “They’re my role models.”
Hunnie sat in shock. Slowly, she bent down to the rat and held it in her mouth. She crunched down on the rat. Sweet, wild flavors filled her mouth. “I see what you mean.” Hunnie said. “The flavors all mixed together. The wilderness, the feeling of being so wild! The-”
But Hunnie didn’t get to finnish. Something in the distance called “LET GO OF THAT RAT!”

2:
Hunnie and Patches both looked up and sniffed the air. It smelt like a dog was nearby. Suddenly, a small corgi jumped out of a bush.
“FREEZE!” He said. Hunnie and Patches looked at the tiny corgi, about the size of a backpack.
“Who’s gonna make us?” Asked Patches.
“I AM!” shouted the corgi.
“Why can't we eat our rats?” asked Hunnie.
The Corgi sighed as if to say “Noobs. Pure Noobs.”
“Look.” He said. “You puppy-pets just hunt for fun. I actually hunt for life.” Said the corgi.
“Puppy-pets?” Asked Hunnie.
“Yes. Puppy-pets. That means the twolegs care for you. I am a wild dog. I hunt for food. You hunt for fun. You know what that means?”
“What?” Hunnie asked the corgi.
“YOUR STEALING MA FOOD!” The corgi yelled.
“Look, Who ARE you anyway?” Asked Patches.
“My name is Benji. Let go of the rat.”
“Why?”
Suddenly, Benji jumped on top of Patches. Benji was very strong. How could Hunnie tell? Because Benji was winning a fight against someone about 3 times bigger than him.
“STOP!” A dog Yelled in the distance. Hunnie whirled around trying to figure out where the voice came from.
A white lab stood on top of the fence in Hunnie’s yard.
“Yasmine?” Asked Benji. Yasmine stared at Benji for a second then looked at Hunnie. “I’m sorry. Was Benji bothering you?” She said in a wise tone.
“Um, Sure. Yeah.” Said Hunnie.
“Come back with me to the forest, Benji.” Said Yasmine.
“Wait, You're a wild dog too!” Asked Patches.
“Yes. Why?” Asked Yasmine.
“MY ROLE MODEL!” Said Patches. He ran up to Yasmine and hugged her. Yasmine elegantly shoved him off.
“Why do you guys live in the forest?” Asked Hunnie.
“We don't think that life should be spent all cozy and comfy.” Said Benji. “We think life should be lived to it’s fullest.”
“So we became wild dogs. Living in the forest.” Said Yasmine.
“Can i join you guys?” Asked Patches.
“If you want.” Said Yasmine.
“I'M IN!” Said Patches.
“What about you Hunnie?” Asked Yasmine.
“Um…” Hunnie looked at her house. “Okay…” Said Hunnie.
“You can stay if you want.” Offered Yasmine.
“No, I’ll go.” Said Hunnie, Trotting into the forest.
“Let’s go then!” Said Benji, and the four dogs ran into the forest without looking back.

3:
“So now what?” Asked Hunnie.
We make a clan.” Said Benji.
“A clan?” Asked Patches.
“Yasmine and I have agreed that when we find more dogs to live in the forest, We will make a big clan. We need a name, a leader, a deputy, and two warriors.” Said Benji.
“Warriors?” Asked Patches.
“We need some dogs to fight other dogs and do missions.” Said Yasmine. “Also, we all should get new names in honor of our new clan, dog clan. The leader’s name should end with the word star.” Said Yasmine.
“Who will be the leader?” Asked Patches.
“I will because I am fiercest.” Said Benji.
“I will because I am wisest” Said Yasmine.
“I will because I am fastest.” Said Patches.
“I will because I was the one who started this book.” Said Hunnie.
“Let’s Let SkyClan decide.” Said Yasmine.
“SkyClan! There’s another clan?! Asked Patches.
“No, It means to let god and heaven decide.” Said Yasmine.
“Eenie meanie miney moe…” Started Benji. “Catch a tiger by the toe, if he hollers let him go, Eenie meanie miney moe.”
And his paw landed on…
“ME!” shouted Patches.
Benji sighed. “Yes, you are the leader.” Said Benji.
“Who will be deputy?” Asked Hunnie.
“I will” Said Yasmine.
“Then we will be warriors.” Said Benji and Hunnie.
“Now we need names.” said Patches. “I am fast, so I am Swiftstar.”
“Okay Swiftstar…” Said Yasmine. “I am Brightleaf.”
“Then I will be Goldenheart.” Said Hunnie. “And Benji… You should be Smallpaw.”
“HEY!” Said Benji.
“Well it does suit you…” Said Brightleaf.
“FINE” said Smallpaw.
“Great. Now all we need is to set up camp and get shelter.” Said Brightleaf.
“Well, there is a big clearing right here. Lets start here.” Said Goldenheart.
“Good. Now what?” Asked Brightleaf.
“We should hunt and get some food.” Said Swiftstar.
“I think we should go and explore.” Said Smallpaw.
“That sounds like a good idea.” Said Goldenheart.
“I think we should set up camp.” Said Brightleaf.
Swiftstar growled a deep growl. “None of us can agree anymore!” He said.
“You know what?” Smallpaw said. “I don't need losers like you. I can survive out here in the wild all by myself, and I can prove it!”
Swiftstar,Brightleaf and Goldenheart gasped. Then Swiftstar got an angry look on his face. “Get out of our territory. We don't want you anymore.”
“Who’s gonna make me?” Smallpaw asked.
“Your leader.” Swiftstar growled.
“Not anymore.” Said Smallpaw. “I'm going to make my own clan. I’ll find dogs and get them to join. I’ll get girl dogs, then we can have a litter, then the litter will have a litter, and we will live FOREVER!” Then, he dashed out of the forest.
Brightleaf sighed. “He is right. We all have different opinions. Maybe it’s best if we lived our separate ways.” Then, She walked out of the clan territory.
Swiftstar and Goldenheart looked at each other. Then, Swiftstar ran out of the clearing, and Goldenheart was left alone in her own clan, feeling as weak as her old puppy-pet self.

4:
“I’ll find dogs and get them to join!” Smallpaw’s words echoed in Goldenheart’s head. I need more dogs in my clan. Goldenheart thought. We will have a leader, a deputy, some warriors, some apprentices, about to become warriors, a medicine dog and some elders, to pass time with random boring stories.
Goldenheart decided that since this was her clan, and she was the one who made it and started it, she should be the leader. Goldenstar. It sounded nice in her head. Then, Goldenstar thought that her clan needed a name. It couldn't be dog clan because they all were dogs.
Suddenly, Smallpaw, Brightleaf and Swiftstar jumped out behind the bushes and trees and into Goldenstar’s territory. Goldenstar growled. “We come in peace.” Said Brightleaf. What, Is this Star wars of something? Goldenstar thought.
“We can't just leave so quickly. We need to settle this.” Said Smallpaw. The four dogs all gathered in the middle of the clearing and sat down in a circle.
“What are the names of our clans?” Asked Swiftstar.
“I want to have my territory be near the pond all the way over there.” Said Smallpaw, trying to point through the trees to a big marshy pond. “So we will be WaterClan.”
“I want to be in that meadow.” Said Brightleaf, pointing to a big, wide, grassy meadow. “We will be EarthClan, known for our flowers and grass in our territory.” She said.
Then, A big burst of wind blew past the four dogs, blowing in the direction of some tall mountains. Not many, though. just three or four. Goldenstar watched Swiftstar look to the mountains. “AirClan!” Swiftstar blurted out as he pointed to the mountains.
“Okay…” Goldenstar woofed. “Then FireClan will be here. And, I am now known as Goldenstar. Not Goldenheart.”
“I am Smallstar of WaterClan!” Smallstar yowled.
“And I am Brightstar, of EarthClan.” Brightstar said.
“Great.” Goldenstar barked. “Now that we know our names and territories, lets find us some dog pals! We will meet at that big oak tree tonight.” She said, Pointing at a big, old, mossy oak tree that was in the middle of the four territories. “At that time, there is no fighting or arguing. Bye!” She woofed. She watched as Swiftstar,Brightstar and Smallstar walked back to their new homes. Time to get some clan mates! The new Fireclan leader thought.

5:

A dog howled in the distance and Goldenstar’s ears pricked up. He howled again and Goldenstar followed the sound. The sound lead her in between two large birch trees and in front of her was…
“Hello” A tall chocolate lab with big paws said.
Goldenstar gasped and quickly tore off her bright pink collar the twolegs put on her. She buried it behind her and quickly turned back around. “Er- Hi” Goldenstar stammered. “What’s your name?”
“My name’s Bailey. What’s your’s?” Bailey asked.
“Goldenstar.” Goldenstar said proudly.
“Golden...Star? That’s not a very normal dog name.” Bailey asked questionably.
“I’m a wild dog. I get a new name.”
“Really!” Bailey asked. “Can I join you!”
“Sure!” Goldenstar woofed. She now had her first clan mate! Oh, joy! “Follow me back to the Clan territory!”
“Clan? Okay!” Bailey barked as he followed Goldenstar back to the camp.

“Here it is!” Goldenstar said happily as she showed Bailey FireClan camp. She was very proud that she was the leader of this clan, which would grow so big and strong. She was so proud of herself.
“It’s kind of empty…” Bailey said nervously, worried if this was some weird trick.
“It needs some work done to it.” Goldenstar admitted. “That’s why I need you in my clan.”
“Can you quickly tell me about these clans and stuff?” The tall brown dog asked.
“Fine. There are four clans. They are WaterClan, EarthClan, AirClan and FireClan. They’re leaders are Smallstar, Brightstar, Swiftstar and me, Goldenstar. What else… We are trying to get lots of dogs in our clans. We have a leader, now we need a deputy, some warriors, some apprentices, a medicine dog and some elders maybe?”
“Okay. Can I be the deputy?” Bailey asked.
“Sure. But first you need a name. The leaders name ends with star. Maybe… The warriors, elders and medicine dogs names all end differently, but the pups end with the word pup.”
“What about apprentices?” Asked Bailey.
“Fur.” Said Goldenstar. “They will end with Fur. You should be named…” Goldenstar examined Bailey. “You have big paws… and are tall and brown.. You should be named Lionfoot. You can be the deputy.” She said.
“Loinfoot!” Loinfoot exclaimed proudly.
“Let’s get started on camp.” Goldenstar said. She walked over to a big rock with a caved in side behind it. “This is the high rock.” She said. “I will call the clan over for meetings here. Behind it, there is a little shelter-place. That is the leaders den. I will sleep there.” Goldenstar walked over to a big bush. “This will be the warriors den, but you will sleep in it too.”
“Okay.” Loinfoot said.
“And this…” Goldenstar said, pointing to a smaller bush. “Is the apprentices den.” Then she walked over towards a big hole in the ground. “This would make a perfect Medicine dogs den.” She said. Then she ran over towards a BIG rock with a HUGE crack in it. “The elders can fit in this crack and sleep there.” She said.
“Okay…” Loinfoot said, starting to get a bit confused.
“Now, we need dogs for our clan. Let’s split up. You search over there, and I’ll search over there.” She said. Then, the two dogs ran to find more.

6:
“Any luck?” Goldenstar asked Lionfoot when they came back from finding more dogs.
“Well, I found this…” Said Lionfoot. A big black lab with torn ears and battle scars came out from the shadows.
“Hello. What’s your name?” Goldenstar asked the black lab.
“Killer.” He answered.
“K-Killer?” Goldenstar asked.
“Yes. Lionfoot here told me about your clan. I would like to be part of it.”
“Okay Killer. You need a new name.” I don't want to insult him with his name. He’ll get mad. Goldenstar thought. “Y-you can choose it.” She stammered.
“I’d prefer to be called Blackheart.” He said.
“B-Blackheart! okay… You can be a warrior! You can sleep over there in that bi-”
“Lionfoot told me. I will sleep in that big bush. I’m not dumb.” He growled, trotting away towards the warriors den.
“He doesn’t look nice…” Lionfoot admitted. “But he could make a decent fighter.”
Goldenstar sighed. “The more the merrier.” She said.
“More?” Asked Lionfoot.
“Yes.More.” Goldenstar said.
The three dogs spent all afternoon trying to find dogs. They ended up with a small pink poodle named Belle, a german shepard with no name who had only three legs, an old sheepdog named Bud, an old samoyed named Casey, and their daughter, Frosty, who was a mix of the two.
“What will our jobs be?” Belle asked.
“What do you want to be, you pink coated coward.” Blackheart growled. Lionfoot nipped him in the neck. “Yow!” Blackheart cried.
“Pinkcoat!” Goldenstar jumped. “It’s the perfect name! What do you want to be, Pinkcoat? You can be a warrior or a medicine dog.”
“I would like to be a medicine dog.” Pinkcoat yipped.
“Okay. What about you?” Goldenstar said, pointing to the German shepherd.
“I will be a warrior, and I will be named Threeleg.” Threeleg said.
Kinda harsh to himself. Goldenstar thought.
“Warrior! Under that condition! I don't think so.” Growled Blackheart.
“Well I think so, and I am the leader.” Goldenstar woofed. “What about you three?” She asked Bud, Casey and Frosty.
“What did ya say?” Asked Bud.
Goldenstar saw Frosty walk up to her. “He’s quite deaf.” She whispered. “Also, my mom is blind in one eye.” Goldenstar saw Frosty glance at her mom, who was petting Pinkcoat and saying “Aww, aren’t you a cute little basset hound!”
“Would they mind if I put them in the elders section?” Goldenstar asked.
“Not at all.” Frosty answered.
Goldenstar walked over to Bud and Casey. “Your new names are Halfeye and Halfear. Follow me to the elders den.” She said, Leading the two old dogs to the elders rock.
After Halfeye and Halfear were in their dens, she asked Frosty “What should your name be? Should you be an apprentice or a warrior?”
“Chill. I’m not that young.” Frosty said. “Just call me Frostball.” Frostball said.
“Okay.” Goldenstar said. She looked up at the sky, which was now already turning orange. “Everybody follow me to the old oak!” She said.

7:
“Hello.” Goldenstar said as she led the clan under the tree.
“Hi.” Said Swiftstar.
There were lots of dogs here. All of them were in a circle next to the tree.
“Okay. Who wants to share who they met to us?” Brightstar asked.
“I will!” Swiftstar answered. “This is the deputy, Nightstripe.” He said pointing to a friendly, small black lab. “These are the warriors.” Swiftstar continued. “Brownwish, Twistedtail and Bluecloud.” He said, pointing to a pug, a basset hound and a husky. “This is the medicine dog, Spottedflower…” Said Swiftstar, pointing to a dalmation. “And this is one of our apprentices, Ravenfur.” He said, pointing to a young border collie.
After EarthClan and WaterClan shared, It was time for FireClan to share.
“This is Lionfoot and Blackheart and Threeleg and Pinkcoat and Frostball and Halfeye and Halfear.” Goldenstar barked, trying to get it to be over soon.
“Okay.” Said Brightstar. “Tomorrow night, we will come back with different dogs. these dogs will stay and rest at home. We will share our new dogs, but that is it. By then, we all should have enough dogs to have a full clan. When dogs die we will have litters and Then the new pups will live in the nursery. Once the pups are old enough to start training, they get a mentor and become apprentices. Once they are ready they will be warriors. Once warriors, they could either be selected deputy, then leader. Or, the warriors have pups and then become elders. Or, They live a long warrior life, then become elders. Make sense?”Brightstar asked.
“Yes.” All of the dogs said.
“Okay. Lets go.” Said Smallstar, and all four clans walked back to their territory to get some sleep.

8:
Goldenstar woke up with a jolt. Where was she, though? This wasn’t the leaders den. This wasn’t anywhere in the camp. She was stranded in the middle of the forest. Then, she saw Smallstar,Swiftstar and Brightstar jump out of some bushes. “Hello” She said. The three dogs said nothing. They just silently walked towards her. “What’s going on?” Goldenstar said. The dogs said nothing. They just got closer to Goldenstar. And then, they pounced.

“Goldenstar” She heard a voice. “Goldenstar, wake up.” This voice was highly familiar. Suddenly, she realised that she was sleeping, and she slowly opened her eyes.
“Are you feeling okay, Goldenstar?” It was Frostball. Sitting next to her was Lionfoot.
“Just a little… confused… that’s all.” Goldenstar answered slowly.
“About what?” Lionfoot asked.
Goldenstar turned towards Frostball. “Can I speak to my deputy… alone?” Goldenstar asked. She saw Frostball give a small nod then walk out of the leaders den.
“Are you sure you're okay?” Lionfoot asked.
Goldenstar took a deep breath. “Last night I had a dream. Smallstar, Swiftstar and Brightstar were in it. They- They attacked me.” She said.
Lionfoot gasped. “Do you think it means something?” He asked.
“I don't know.” Goldenstar admitted. “But that doesn’t matter. We should be getting more dogs. It’s our last day to get more.”
“More what?” A voice asked. Lionfoot and Goldenstar gasped. In front of them stood a Bernese mountain dog with three young dogs behind him. A Dalmatian, a red setter and a pug. “My name is Buddy!” The Bernese mountain dog barked. “I had a brother named Buddy…” The young pug said, staring into the distance, lost in her own thoughts.
“I lost my brother.” Buddy said, hanging his head low. “He ran off into the forest without telling me. That’s why I ran into the forest. To find him. I made a searching team and we found you guys.” Buddy said. “What are you doing, anyway?” Buddy asked.
“Making a clan.” Lionfoot simply answered.
“A clan!!!” The dalmatian jumped. “Can we join!?!”
“Not with that attitude” The pug murmured.
“Of course you can join!” Goldenstar answered. The pug’s face turned from grumpy to excited.
“You need names. You can choose.” Lionfoot said.
“Patchstripe!” Buddy said.
“Okay. You three can be apprentices.” Goldenstar said. “Choose the beginning of your name. The end will be the word fur.
“Spottedfur!” The dalmatian said.
“Redfur?” The red setter suggested to himself.
“Maybe… Twistedfur…” The pug said.
“Great!” Said Goldenstar. She climbed on top of the high rock and said “All dogs old enough to catch their own prey please come for a meeting underneath the high rock.”
All of the dogs in the clan looked quizzically at Goldenstar. Goldenstar sighed. “Everybody come over here for a meeting.” She said. All of the dogs gathered below the rock and looked up at Goldenstar. “Today, we gather for these three apprentices. They will need mentors to help them train to become a warrior. I will not guide you in training them. It is your responsibility. I will give you the mentors. Spottedfur, can you please come up here?”
Spottedfur ran to the top of the rock next to Goldenstar. He sat up there with pride.
“Spottedfur’s Mentor will be Lionfoot.” Goldenstar continued.
Lionfoot walked up the rock next to his new apprentice, Spottedfur.
“Lionfoot, I have chose you as Spottedfur’s mentor for your loyalties as deputy. I hope you pass your loyalty to this young apprentice.” Goldenstar woofed.
Lionfoot touched his nose with Spottedfur’s, Then they both walked down the rock, side by side.
“Redfur, can you come up here?” Goldenstar asked.
Redfur walked slowly up the rock next to Goldenstar.
“Redfur, your mentor will be Blackheart.” She said. Blackheart walked up the rock with a smug smile on his face.
“I chose you as Redfur’s mentor because you are a sturdy and tough warrior, with great muscle and power. I hope you pass your strength on to this apprentice.”
Redfur leaned closer to Blackheart to touch noses, but Blackheart backed away, and bolted down the rock, leaving his apprentice to walk by himself down the steep, slippery rock. He slipped and fell on the ground, head first. Blackheart didn’t seem to notice, so Lionfoot walked up to care for the hurt apprentice.
“Twistedfur, Frostball, come up here.” Goldenstar said. Twistedfur and Frostball climbed up the rock cautiously. “Frostball, I have chose you as Twistedfur’s mentor because you have shown you are a warrior with great care. I hope you pass your care and love down to this apprentice.” Frostball dipped her head gratefully, then touched her nose with Twistedfur’s, then they both climbed down the rock.
“It is almost sunset. We must get going to the old oak.” Goldenstar said.

9:
“How much longer…” Patchstripe complained.
“Almost there.” Goldenstar said.
“Can’t we get there faster?” Asked Spottedfur.
“Fine. Lets run.” Goldenstar suggested.
“Goldenstar!Lookout!” It was Frostball.
Goldenstar looked forward but was too late. “Ow!” She heard another dog cry. Before she knew it, Goldenstar and a stray beagle were rolling down a hill.
‘Woah…!” The beagle cried as she struggled to get out of Goldenstar’s paws. She must have thought Goldenstar was attacking her, because then the beagle threw a clumsy paw at Goldenstar’s chest. Goldenstar let go of the beagle, who kept rolling down the hill. Goldenstar chased after her. The beagle got to her legs. “Leave me alone!” She cried, dashing down the hill.
“No!” Goldenstar yelped, looking at the cliff that hang over the edge of the mountain. The beagle was heading right for it. If Goldenstar wasn't quick enough, then the beagle would fall of the edge. Goldenstar ran as fast as her furry legs could take her. When she caught up to the beagle, they were only a couple of feet away from the edge. She picked the beagle up by the scruff and carried her up the mountain. The beagle struggled to get out of Goldenstar’s mouth. “Let me go!” The dog cried. Goldenstar dropped her at the top of the mountain.
“You have to be more careful.” She said. “I don't want to harm you. Whats your name?”
“Skyler.” The beagle answered.
“Well now you will be known as Wildfur.” She said.
“She’s way too old to be an apprentice.” Blackheart said.
“It doesn’t matter how old they are. What matters is how skilled they are. No offence.” Lionfoot said.
“Your mentor will be Patchstripe.” Goldenstar said. “Lets get to the old oak.”
10:
“So this is the old oak…” Wildfur said.
“Yup!” Goldenstar answered.
“Hello dogs!” Swiftstar said.
Goldenstar noticed that Patchstripe was staring at Swiftstar. His eyes were clouded with sorrow. “Patchstripe” Goldenstar said, waving her paw in front of Patchstripe’s face. “Huh?” Patchstripe asked. “Are you okay?” Goldenstar asked. “Er-yeah.” Patchstripe said.
After the clans shared their new dogs, they left back to their own clan camps. They settled down in their dens and went to sleep.

Goldenstar woke up the next morning. The sunlight gleamed inside her dark den. She padded out of her den and stretched. She decided she would check on how the warriors were doing. The ones without apprentices. There was only one warrior without an apprentice. Threeleg. She went to check on him. He was sleeping in the corner of the warriors bush. She didn't want to wake him because he looked so peaceful, but there was work to be done. She walked over to Threeleg and pawed him in the chest. “Wake up.” She said. Threeleg slowly opened his eyes. “Yes, Goldenstar?” He asked.
“You are the only warrior at camp. We all might starve to death soon. I need you to go out hunting in the forest. Remember do not go into other clan territory.” Goldenstar said strictly.
“Yes Goldenstar.” Threeleg said, walking out of the den. Goldenstar walked out of the warriors den to check on the elders. Halfeye and Halfear slept in silence, their sides heaving as they breathed. Goldenstar left quietly and went to check on the warriors and apprentices.
“Do it like this…” Frostball said to Twistedfur. Frostball crept up on a dead leaf and then pounced on it. Twistedfur followed, and she caught the leaf with great expertise. “Good work!” Goldenstar said. “Thank you, Goldenstar!” Twistedfur replied.
Goldenstar looked at Blackheart and Redfur. “You're doing it wrong!” Blackheart growled. They were practicing fighting techniques. Blackheart, A big strong black lab, was swift and meant to fight. Redfur, on the other hand, was a large red setter who was not the fighting type.
Lionfoot and Spottedfur were practicing their hunting, like Frostball and Twistedfur. Spottedfur caught a rock quickly and quietly. “I am going to be the best warrior there is! I will hunt and fight! Catch and Kill! I will be the best warrior when I grow up! You’ll see!” He said proudly.
“Thats not what being a warrior is about!” Said Wildfur, who sat next to Lionfoot with Patchstripe. “Being a warrior is about being loyal to your clan. Brave and fierce, sacrificing your life if you must.”
Wildfur’s words shined in Goldenstar’s heart. But then her tummy growled, and she thought of all of the dogs. This was her clan. She was the leader. She had to take care of these dogs. “Frostball. Twistedfur. I need you to go out and hunt for our camp. Be back by sun set.” She said. “Sure!” Frostball said as she trotted into the forest.
“Lionfoot, Spottedfur, you too.”
“Sure!” Said Spottedfur as he darted into the forest.
Lionfoot sighed as he chased Spottedfur out of the camp.
Goldenstar now didn't know what to do, so she trotted around camp. She decided she would go out and hunt. She let Patchstripe and Wildfur come with her.
She walked around the forest until the scent of a mouse flew into her nose. She sat in a crouch, and stalked up on the scrap of food. The mouse caught sight of Goldenstar and ran away. Goldenstar wasn’t fast enough to chase it, so she let the mouse run free.
Then, Wildfur dashed in front of Goldenstar and ran after the prey. She caught it swiftly, and chomped on it. “Wait!” Goldenstar said. A quarter of the mouse was already gone. “Save it and bring it back to camp.” Goldenstar said. “Bury it for now. We’ll come back and pick it up.”
Goldenstar watched as Wildfur sadly dropped the juicy mouse and dug a hole for it. She placed the mouse in the hole, then threw the dirt back on to it. The three dogs kept walking to find more prey.
*****

“I think she should be made a warrior soon.” Patchstripe suggested as he glanced at Wildfur who held lots of prey in her mouth. Goldenstar walked until she got back to camp. Lionfoot and Spottedfur bounded towards her.
“Goldenstar!” Barked Spottedfur. “You won’t believe what just happened! It’s HORRIBLE!”
Lionfoot trotted over. “Bring Pinkcoat and some more dogs. This is a big problem. Follow us.” Lionfoot looked very serious, which was unlike himself.
Goldenstar got Pinkcoat,Blackheart and Redfur. She left Halfeye and Halfear in charge of the camp. By now,Frostball and Twistedfur were back at camp. They went with the dogs. Goldenstar and the other dogs dashed off after Lionfoot and Spottedfur.
“How far away is it?” Asked Wildfur.
“Not far.” answered Spottedfur.
Goldenstar stopped behind Lionfoot as he stopped.
“Look.” He said.
All of the dogs looked in front of Lionfoot’s paws, and there lay Threeleg, motionless.
11:
Goldenstar could barely hear her own voice above all of the other dogs. “This is all my fault.” She said to Lionfoot. “I made him go hunt. What was I thinking? Letting him hunt?”
“It’s not your fault.” The tall brown deputy reassured his leader. “It could have happened to any of us!”
Goldenstar nodded, then turned to Pinkcoat, who was trying to feed Threeleg some berries. “What are those?” Goldenstar asked.
“These are poppy seeds. They ease pain.” Then Pinkcoat grabbed another… thing… and then she stuffed it in Threelegs mouth. “Chew...chew..and swallow.” Pinkcoat said as she tried to get a gasping Threeleg to eat the seeds. He only had a few minutes left.
“Threeleg! What happened!” Goldenstar asked.
“Badger…” Threeleg only spoke the words he needed to say. “Rabbit. Badger’s den. Me. Kill rabbit. Me go into Badger’s den. Badger bite…” He rasped. “Leg hurt. Blood gone. Heart dieing.”
Pinkcoat rushed to find the right herbs and berries. Time was running out.
“I didn’t get to know you well.” Goldenstar started. “But I knew even though you had disabilities, you would become a great warrior. I’m sorry it had to end like this, Threeleg. FireClan and SkyClan honor your determination.”
“Thank you, Goldenstar.” Threeleg rasped. “But I hunt with Skyclan now…” He said. Slowly, his heart stopped beating. Threeleg was dead.
During this silence, Spottedfur blurt out “What is Skyclan?”
“Skyclan,” Lionfoot began. “Is the tribe of heavenly warriors. Those who die go to Skyclan after they die. Threeleg’s soul is there right now. His soul will be up in the sky tonight, as a bright star.”
Goldenstar and Lionfoot held Threeleg in their mouths(they were going to bury him back at the camp) and went back to camp.
When they got back to the clearing, Goldenstar and Lionfoot dropped Threeleg in surprise. Pinkcoat let out a wail of distress as she tried to keep all her herbs and berries organised and be in on all the action. Patchstripe and Wildfur howled in anger and charged at the WaterClan dogs that were attacking the camp.
12:
Goldenstar didn’t know what to do. All of the dogs seemed to have a job. Warriors fought with other warriors, apprentices with other apprentices, and the elders sat in the rock they lived in, knowing that they were too old to fight. Goldenstar looked at Smallstar. He was fighting with all of the dogs. Goldenstar looked around to see who was having trouble. All of the dogs seemed to fight good, But Redfur was having some trouble fighting against a big Samoyed.
Goldenstar leaped into battle, her claws stretched out, ready to tear apart the dogs face. She gripped the dogs tail and bit hard on it. The dog yowled in pain.
“Clawfeather! I’m coming!” Goldenstar heard in the distance. It sounded like Smallstar. Goldenstar was right. Smallstar leaped away from fighting with Frostball and dragged his claws into Goldenstar’s forehead.
For a moment, all Goldenstar saw was red liquid streaming down her face. She wanted to scream in pain and anger, but she decided to blindly swish her claws in the air.
She heard Redfur bark “Take that!”
Goldenstar heard Smallstar yowl in pain. Her vision was blurred, but she got to see that Smallstar had a deep cut in his belly. Smallstar winced, and ran out of the camp.
Seeing that their leader left, all of the WaterClan dogs left. The last to leave was a small gray puppy.
“Wait!” Goldenstar called to the young dog. Nervously, the dog slowed to a stop.
“W-what do you want…” He asked.
“What’s your name?” Goldenstar asked.
“S-Smoke-p-p-pup.” Smokepup was nervously shaking.
“Smokepup, do you know why Waterclan attacked our camp?” Goldenstar kindly asked the smoky gray pup.
“I- no. All Smallstar told me and the other pups was that you guys did something wrong. He said that we needed to attack, and he didn’t say anything else.”
“Smokepup!” A voice coming from the forest called. Smokepup slowly backed away from Goldenstar.
“Goodbye, Smokepup.” Goldenstar called to the pup.
“See you next gathering!” Lionfoot called.
“G’bye FireClan.” Smokepup said as he dashed through the trees to catch up with his clan.

“All dogs old enough to catch their own prey please join underneath the high rock for a clan meeting.” Goldenstar called on top of the high rock. This time, all the dogs came without hesitating. They sat underneath the large smooth rock. “As you know, Threeleg has died and-”
“wait… Threeleg is DEAD?!” Called out Halfeye. Goldenstar remembered that Halfeye and Halfear didn’t know what happened to Threeleg.
“Yes. Threeleg was killed by a badger. Frostball and Lionfoot have buried him outside the warriors den. Anyway, we don’t have any warriors without apprentices. That means that we won’t have that many dogs to stick around camp to guard, hunt, and help out. We need warriors with no apprentices, and right now, I can make two.” Goldenstar glanced at Wildfur and Patchstripe.
“Wildfur, please step forward.”
Wildfur-shocked at becoming a warrior so early- slowly stepped forward.
“I, Goldenstar, leader of Fireclan, Call upon my dog ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn.” Goldenstar turned to Wildfur, who was gleaming with happiness.
“Wildfur, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?” Goldenstar asked.
“I do.” Wildfur answered.
“Then by the powers of SkyClan, I give you your warrior name. Wildfur, from this moment you will be known as Wildflower. Skyclan honors your determination and skill, and we welcome you as a full warrior of FireClan.”
“Wildflower! Wildflower!” The dogs of FireClan chanted.
“Congratulations, Wildflower!” Patchstipe leaped over to Wildflower and they touched noses.
“The meeting isn’t over yet.” Goldenstar barked as the dogs walked away from the highrock. They came back to where they sat.
“Patchstripe,” Goldenstar started. “I expect that now that you have no apprentice, you will work very hard around camp. Keep watch. Help others.”
“I know, Goldenstar!” Patchstipe exclaimed.
“Good. Clan dismissed.”
All of the dogs walked away to do their clan duties.
Wildflower trotted up to Goldenstar. “Thank you, Goldenstar. I promise I will be the best warrior you will ever meet!”
“No, Wildflower. Thank you for being such a great apprentice. I’m sure you’ll be a great warrior.”
“I’m sure I will too!”
Goldenstar thought. “In honor of you becoming a warrior, I want you to sit vigil tonight.”
“No problem!” Wildflower barked.
Goldenstar walked away. Then, she sat and thought. “See you next gathering!” She remembered Lionfoot say. The gathering was every full moon. Some of the dogs from each clan met at the old oak. But then she realised.
The gathering was tonight.
13
Goldenstar climbed on top of the highrock once more. “Dogs. Gather here so we can discuss the gathering.” The dogs walked towards the big gray rock. “I am only allowed to bring a certain number of dogs. The ones that don't come will come next time. I promise. Now, the dogs coming are Lionfoot, Pinkcoat, Wildflower, Patchstripe, Redfur and Twistedfur. It is only Sunhigh,” Goldenstar pointed up to the sky with her tail. The sun was halfway in the sky. “So we still have a bit of time. During that time, you can hunt and train. Clan dismissed.”
The dogs walked away from the highrock. Lionfoot walked up to Goldenstar. “What now?” He asked.
“I guess we could just sit and talk…”

*****

“Okay dogs!” Goldenstar barked. “It’s time for the gathering. Follow me.”
The dogs followed Goldenstar through the forest.
“There it is!”
“The old oak!”
“Wow!”
All of the dogs were so happy to see the old oak. Some warriors from Earthclan,Waterclan and Airclan were talking in a circle. Brightstar and Swiftstar were talking on a large rock. Smallstar stared in front of himself, lost in his own thoughts. Some apprentices from the clans(Goldenstar recognised Ravenfur, Cloudpup and Smokepup) were playing with each other.
The dogs from Fireclan joined the other clans and talked. Lionfoot followed Goldenstar up the great big rock. “I think only leaders should come up here…” Goldenstar mumbled to Lionfoot.
“Okay. I’ll just stand down there.” The tall brown deputy said as he gestured to a spot on the ground. He trotted down to the ground.
“Well look who it is…” Smallstar growled at Goldenstar. “Nice to see you again.”
“Back atcha…” Goldenstar mumbled.
“Leader of Fireclan.”
“what do you mea-”
“You call yourself a leader?”
“You have a problem with me being a leader?”
“You can't even protect your own clan!”
“Yes I can!”
“Stop! Both of you!” Barked Brightstar. “We don’t need anyone fighting here!”
“This could get physical!” Woofed Swiftstar.
“Fine.” Goldenstar mumbled.
“Now that all the clans are here,” Brightstar said. “We can start the meeting on this big boulder.”
“THE BIG BOULDER!” Smallstar barked, so loud that all the dogs in the clearing turned to look at him. “That’s it! This rock should be called the big boulder! We stand here and talk to the clans!”
“That’s a good idea, Smallstar!” Brightstar woofed. She barked a big loud RRRRWOOORF! And all the dogs gathered around her. “Let the gathering begin.” She said.
“I shall speak first.” Growled Smallstar. “Waterclan is doing well. We have met some new dogs. Cloudpup,Smokepup and Dustypup are now Apprentices, Cloudfur and Smokefur and Dustyfur.” Smallstar gestured to the three dogs with his tail.
So that’s why they're here Goldenstar thought. They would be too young to come if they were just pups.
“Our prey is going well. We have lots to eat.” He added shortly. “Swiftstar? Would you like to go?”
“Sure!” Swiftstar woofed. “Airclan is doing great! Midnightpup is now an apprentice! She is now called Midnightfur!” Goldenstar glanced at the young apprentice talking to her older sister Ravenfur. “Brightstar, would you like to go?” She asked.
“Thank you, Goldenstar. Earthclan is doing great. We have lots of rabbits and mice to eat. Goldenstar?”
“FireClan is also doing well. One of our Apprentices, Wildfur, Is now a warrior.” Goldenstar saw Wildflower stand proudly underneath the big boulder. “She is now known as Wildflower.” Goldenstar saw Lionfoot give her a glance that said More. More. There is more to say.
“That is great, Goldenstar.” Brightstar said. “Is that it?”
“Well, no.” Goldenstar continued.
“What else?” Swiftstar asked.
Goldenstar looked from Smallstar, to Lionfoot, then back to Smallstar. She gulped, ready for a roar of barks and whimpers to wash over her like a wave.
“Threeleg…Threeleg is dead!”

14
“Huh?”
“What?”
“It can’t be!”
“He’s dead?”
“Yes.” Goldenstar answered. “He is dead. He got attacked by a badger.”
“speaking of attack…” She heard Lionfoot mumble.
“Also,” She added. “WaterClan has attacked us!”
Gasps and yips sounded around the clearing. All dogs looked at Smallstar, who didn’t look feared. In fact, he looked proud.
“Indeed. We did attack Fireclan.”
“Well why?” Asked Swiftstar.
“Because they stole our food!”
“No we didn’t!” Goldenstar barked, defending her clan.
“Yes you did!”
“No. We. DIDN’T!” Goldenstar roared.
“Stop!” Brightstar barked. “Bengi-erm-Smallstar. Tell us your proof.”
“Fine. I saw Goldenstar’s pesky little three legged warrior out on a hunting patrol. He caught prey on our side of the border.”
“That must have been Threeleg!” Lionfoot called.
“Yes.” Said Smallstar. “I told him the other day if I saw him again I would rip off his other leg!”
“You wouldn’t!” Goldenstar barked. “You already ripped off one, so why rip off the other?”
The dogs in the clearing gasped.
“Huh?” Smallstar asked.
“You’re the reason Threeleg had only Three legs! You tore off the other one! Don’t think I would forget! I remember that you and Threeleg were at the same adoption center as me! You bullied Threeleg! When He got you back, you said that he would pay one day! Threeleg must have tried to join Waterclan, but you tore off his leg before he could join! Then he went to join Fireclan. He must have recognised me and known that it was save! You’re the reason Threeleg is dead! If he had four legs, he wouldn’t be killed by a badger!”
“I knew you’d figure out eventually, Goldenstar. Your smart. And yes, I did rip off Threelegs leg, and I also attacked your camp.”
“It’s just a scrap of food! Why would you need to attack us?”
“Just a scrap of food? JUST a scrap of FOOD?!?”
“Yeah. What’s the biggie?”
“Oh, Goldenstar.” Smallstar chuckled. “You don't understand. Now that we don't have little bowls of puppy-pet slop in front of us at all times, food is gonna be rough.”
“He’s right. Food is harder to get now.” Said Swiftstar.
“I’m not gonna let you just take food from my clan!” Smallstar barked loudly.
“Fine. Then let’s make a border. Everyone should send dogs on patrols to check and see if you can smell a dog from another clan on your territory. deal?”
“Deal.” Said Swiftstar and Brightstar.
“Fine.” Smallstar mumbled.
“Good. Now, I think that the gathering is over.” Goldenstar pointed her tail to the sky. The full moon was covered by a large, gray rain cloud.
“Skyclan is angry.” Brightstar mumbled. “Let’s go.”
And saying that, all the dogs went back to camp.

15

“Stop stealing our food!” Goldenstar barked to Smallstar. It was a moon later and the dogs were at the gathering.
“And my food!” Swiftstar growled.
“And ours!” Brightstar usually never got angry.
“I didn’t st-” Smallstar started.
“don't pretend you didn’t! Earthclan smelt Waterclan scent everywhere!” Brightstar’s sharp pearly white teeth gleamed in the sunlight, as if to say “get prepared! we will bite!”
“well you just….well…” Smallstar stumbled for words.
Suddenly, a deafening roar crashed over head.
Wildflower sniffed the air. “rain.” She said.
Goldenstar looked up in the sky to see lightning lighting up the sky. Thunder roared, and dark storm clouds covered the sky like a dark, thick, fluffy blanket. Cold, wet rain fell from the sky.
“Skyclan is angry! Look at the sky!” Brightstar barked. The moon was being shielded by the dark clouds.
“We should probably go…” Lionfoot said nervously.
“Yes.” Goldenstar replied “We shall finish this gathering tomorrow night at moonhigh. Agreed?”
“Agreed.” The other three leaders barked.
“Great. Now, I say we should go back to our camps and rest.”
The clans went back to their camps.

*****
“Goldenstar, what’s wrong?” Lionfoot walked up to the leader, who sat outside in the rain alone while the other dogs huddled close to each other in their dens.
“What if…” Goldenstar started. She stared into Lionfoot’s warm light brown stare. “What if I wasn’t meant to be a leader!”
“What?!?!” Lionfoot asked cunfuzzled. “What are you talking about! Your the best dog of them all! What makes you say you wern’t meant to be a leader?!?!”
Lionfoot’s words shined in Goldenstar’s heart. “Your the best dog of them all!”
“It’s just… Waterclan...er...mainly just Smallstar...says I’m not fit to be a leader! Do you think he’s right?”
“No.” Goldenstar was surprised by the tone of Lionfoot’s voice. “Smallstar is a mousebrain. He doesnt know what he’s talking about.”
“Mice do have very small brains…” Goldenstar mumbled.
“Exactly!” Lionfoot exclaimed. “Smallstar is just dumb, and stupid. Don't listen to him. All of the other dogs know that you are the best dog. Don't let Smallstar’s words hurt you!”
“Thanks Lionfoot… It really helps to know that you think i'm able to be a leader. It really makes my day. Even if its raining and its midnight….”
“Your welcome. Now. Lets get you nice and dry inside your den.”
Goldenstar and Lionfoot walked side by side to the leaders den, tails locked.

16
“Welp, Goldenstar, the fresh-kill pile is full, the apprentices have been taught their battle moves, and the elders are all clear from ticks. Is there anything else you would like us to do?” Frostball would do anything for her leader, no matter how hard it was. Her icy blue eyes stared deep into Goldenstar’s amber eyes, trying to make out the golden retrievers expression.
“No, Frostball. You’ve done enough for today. You can rest. But...can you send Twistedfur and Spottedfur to help Pinkcoat gather herbs?” Goldenstar knew that times were tough now, and the clan needed to be prepared for anything.
“Ok, Goldenstar.” Frostball yawned. “Your right. I am a bit tired...but that won’t stop me from gathering a few apprentices!” Frostball dashed toward the apprentices den.
3 moons have passed. Gatherings have been more calm, because Smallstar has stopped stealing prey. Goldenstar sat remembering the gathering. Not much has happened, except for that the Airclan medicine dog apprentice-Stonefur- and the Earthclan medicine dog -Cherryfur- have gotten their warrior names, but they are still medicine dog apprentices. Their new names were Stoneberry and Cherryblossom. Also, 2 Waterclan apprentices -Heavyfur and Largefur- have become warriors, Heavyfang and Largeclaw.
Smallstar, and all the dogs, have accepted that even though life as a wild dog may be tough, you have to accept it. You can't live for power, or fame, or anything like that. Smallstar also said that life will not be the same. We will still have arguments, and battles. But always remember that while it may be tough, living in the wild is one of the best things a dog could ask for.
And Goldenstar
Smallstar
Swiftstar
Brightstar
and all the dogs in the clans
couldn’t have asked for anything else.

The end
