five moons later
The morning sunlight filtered into the den shining through the thickly woven bramble stems of the nursery. The thick wall of brambles only let small shafts of light through into the cozy nursery. Echokit was sleeping soundly, her black pelt rising and falling rhythmically and her tail twitching every so often. The sunlight wasn't what woke the tiny kit up, she was woken as soft paws of her siblings scrambled over her. Echokit's head shot up and her fur bushed out, she stared around with wide, fearful eyes until she realized that it was only her sisters, Heatherkit and Sweetkit, playing. She shook her soft downy fur and passed her small tongue along her back to smooth down her fluffed up fur. Her black pelt blended in with the dark nursery unlike her family's coats. Honeydew, her mother, had a beautiful cream coat with dark brown on her muzzle, paws and her tail, her eyes were a beautiful shade of gold. Her biggest sister, Heatherkit, had darker cream fur with brown stripes and she had very lovely violet coloured eyes. Echokit glanced at Sweetkit, her other sister, she had a beautiful caramel coloured coat with darker marking all along her pelt and she had lovely crisp blue eyes. Finally, Echokit's father, Grasspelt, also the Riverclan deputy, had a pure white coat, dark brown stripes along his back clashed with the snowy white and his eyes were a deep shade of green.
Echokit often wondered why she looked different from her family, but everytime she asked her mother she would change the subject quickly. She never dared to ask Grasspelt, he seemed to believe that she wasn't fit to be a warrior, or at least that's what she heard him say to Webclaw once. This one day he had snarled at her when he caught her playing with Sweetkit and later that night she heard Honeydew arguing with him. Their voices had been muffled and she had been tired so Echokit hadn't picked up many words. But she still felt terrible and she had a nightmare that night.
She sighed softly and stared at her small white toes, and just to make it all worse she was tiny, she looked more like a one moon old kit, not a five moon old one. Honeydew never had trouble answering her questions about her size and everytime she asked Honeydew would lick her head and reply with the same soft words, "You're just different, Echokit, but that's good... Be yourself, even if others don't like the real you, if you like who you are then you have to show it, don't be ashamed."
Echokit had learnt to not think too much about her size and she was rarely picked on about it, but she was picked on about other things. Some of the warriors and apprentices didn't seem to like her very much and she often heard them talk about her and call her loner, kittypet or rouge. She never understood what they meant, she was clan born! Orange-eyes, the friendly, bright eyed warrior whom had come to be a very positive influence for Echokit always got upset with the other warriors for calling her names. Orange-eyes and Echokit had a unique bond and she often looked up to Orange-eyes for support and advice. In some ways the warrior was a motherly figure for Echokit, but in other ways she was a best friend.
Echokit heard excited meows as the two oldest kits, Sunkit and Firekit, burst into the nursery. Their eyes were bright and their paws twitched as if they couldn't stop them from moving. Sunkit, the large orange tabby kit, spotted her and bounded over, his bright green eyes glistening, "It's set!" He said, excitement radiating off of his pelt in waves, it made Echokit feel excited as well, "Jaystar has set the day! Tomorrow Firekt and I will become apprentices!" He finally blurted out.
Echokit felt envy rush through her like the river bursting it's banks after a long rain. But it was quickly replaced with excitement as she saw Sunkit's warm eyes shining as he stared at her. He was too caught up in his excitement that he didn't notice her moment of envy towards him and his brother anyways.
Echokit quickly shook those thoughts away and let a purr escape her maw, "That's great, Sunkit!" She said. The dark-pelted she kit glanced at Firekit and dipped her head, ensuring that she meant the same for him as well, but it didn't matter anyways, he wasn't looking at her. The bright orange kit's eyes were fixed on Whisperdawn as she padded into the nursery and glanced at her kits.
Echokit shrunk down in her fur as the stubborn queen padded closer to her kits. She didn't know why, but Whisperdawn frightened her. She was harsh and unforgiving, but her mate was the kindest Tom in the clan, Jaystar. Echokit shook her head, she was never exactly sure why Jaystar chose the white and ginger she cat as his mate.
But to be fair she had herd many stories an gossip about them from the two elder, Bluewave and Willowtail. They were kind and they never failed to brighten up her day with one of thier tales.
As these thoughts raced through her mind Whisperdawn had padded closer and was now brushing her kits closer to her with her tail. Echokit watched them go and Sunkit caught her eye, disappointment shone in his emerald gaze. Echokit flattened her ears We didn't even get any time to play! She thought with a small sigh.
Her sadness turned to shock as she was barrelled over. She swirmed underneath the weight of the other kit. Thier paws pressed down on her chest and she swore that she could feel the sharp pinpricks of kitten claws on her skin. Echokit looked up at her attacker to find Heatherkit staring down at her with an amused glint in her blue-purple eyes.
When her dark cream sister saw her frightened different coloured eyes she let out a yowl of laughter. Echokit stumbled to her paws when Heatherkit fell back in a fit of laughter and she crouched low to the ground with her fur fluffed up, "Ha! Sweetkit, you should've seen her face!" She crowed.
"No I was-" Echokit tried to protest.
"Don't lie Echokit! You were scared!" Heatherkit growled. All the laughter was gone from her eyes and she was back on all fours. Her eyes shone defiantly as if waiting for Echokit to argue. But she didn't, instead the small kit turned and padded out of the nursery, "I'm going to find Sweetkit," she said, she tried to act strong, but she was still shaking and her heart thumped unevenly.
The sun was shining brightly and it stung her eyes, which were used to the dark nursery. She looked around for her sister, but all she could see were warriors padding around camp. Sweetkit was no where to be found. Echokit padded back towards the nursery and poked her head through, "Sweetkit?" She called, but she only saw Heatherkit talking to Firekit and Sunkit.
When green eyes found her's, Sunkit bounded away, leaving Heatherkit and Firekit looking disgruntled, "Who are you looking for, Echokit?" The Tom kit asked her, his head tilted slightly to the side while his tail swayed back and forth playfully.
"Sweetkit, do you know where she is?" Echokit asked as she peered around the larger kit. Her eyes then spotted the familiar light brown pelt of her sister padding in circles around Grasspelt, who was trying to speak with Yellowstrike without tripping over his daughter. The black she kit watched as Sweetkit jumped up and swatted her paw and Grasspelt's ear, the lean deputy purred and flicked his tail around for her to chase.
"Let sneak up on them," Sunkit's voice sounded close to her ear and she could feel his warm breath stir the fur inside of her ear. Echokit flicked her small ear and looked over at him, he was staring intently at a pile of dried bracken behind the white and brown-pelted deputy. All of her earlier fear dropped away and she grinned happily.
"Lead the way," she purred, her voice dropping to a whisper, "Sunstar."
Sunkit smiled and flicked his tail over her shoulder, "Keep close behind me Echofur," the older kit whispered, his eyes gleaming as he spoke her "warrior name". The young black she kit smiled and followed behind her friend as they snuck up on her father. He didn't know what was happening as the two kits snuck past him and hid in the bracken.
"You're shaking like a leaf, Echofur," Sunkit said, his voice sounding more worried than annoyed.
"I'm just cold," Echokit quickly replied, but she was actually frightened, she did want Grasspelt to get mad at her.
But, there was no more time to be worried because Sunkit had flicked his tail and was now charging towards the deputy's tail, Echokit bounded after him and watched as he swiped a paw at the warrior's flicking tail. She felt relief loosen her chest as Grasspelt looked at Sunkit and smiled.
Three... Two... One.... Jump!
Echokit jumped, but her paw caught on a pebble and she stumbled. She landed and rolled in a pile of black fur. Suddenly she stopped and she could feel fur pressing against her face. Grasspelt shuddered and Echokit wandered what he was doing, but before she could wonder any longer Grasspelt turned to her with a snarl and she fell down onto her back.
"What do you think you're doing you mouse-brained kit?" The large Tom growled and he fluffed up his fur.
Echokit stared up at him, her eyes wide with terror. She tried to speak, but her mouth could not open to say the words. She glanced at Sweetkit and Sunkit for help, but they both looked as terrified as her. All the while Grasspelt had gotten even more furious, "We're you even thinking before you decided to dig you claws into my back?" He snapped.
"I-I didn't mean to, I-I f-fell," she hiccuped, her body trembled, causing her to stutter.
"Grasspelt, stop you're scaring her!" An outraged voice sounded behind Echokit and she tilted her head back to see Orange-eyes standing over the black and white she kit. Echokit scrambled to her paws and clung to the warrior's leg.
"Orange-eyes, she's not your kit, step away from her," Grasspelt's voice was quiet and venomous.
"No, Grasspelt, I won't leave her out in the cold," Orange-eyes said, trying to keep her cool, but Echokit blinked in surprise, her words seemed to hold a deeper meaning, "hopefully Honeydew will have more compassion." Orange-eyes' voice was icy and Echokit watched as Grasspelt flicked his tail angrily before stalking towards the warrior's den.
Echokit watched Orange-eyes sigh and she felt her pick her up by her scruff, "I'm sorry-" Echokit tried to apologize, but the warrior just shook her head,
"Don't, Echokit, all of that could have been avoided if Grasspelt hadn't gotten angry," she said calmly and she placed Echokit down by the nursery entrance, "Don't worry little one, toms are mouse brains."
Echokit shook her head, "Sunkit isn't and neither is Jaystar or Bluewave."
Orange-eyes smiled sadly, "You're too kind for your own good. Now run along, your mother must be worried where you are, it's getting late," she murmured.
Echokit smiled and touched her nose to the warrior's cheek, "I'll see your tomorrow," she whispered, her small meow almost cut off by a yawn. The kit turned and began padding into the nursery, but she turned at the last minute to see glowing green eyes staring at her from across the camp in the warrior's den, fear pricked at her skin and she scampered inside.
I'll prove to you, Grasspelt, that I am just as loyal and strong as Heatherkit. One day you'll regret disliking me, because I'll prove that I am worthy of yours and everyone else's time...
