Echo's Destiny

Chapter One - Part 1

A pale moon lit up Starwood Strand, spilling silver light onto the ground. Echo stirred in her den, looking up at the millions of sparkling flowers that seemed to float in the velvet black sky. Follow your dreams…. Her parents’ last words to her before sending her away resonated in her mind. Echo stretched her wings, causing some blossoms to wink out and gently drift down. Suddenly, a flash of black feathers caught her eye. A raven had alighted on a branch before the moon, cocking its head as it held her gaze for a moment. Wait… a raven? How? Weren’t they extinct a long time ago…? My parents named me after that bird… It crouched down and spread its wings, lifting off into the night, a dark speck beneath the moon. The wind snatched up its fallen feathers and whisked them away, while Echo stared in silence. Was this an… omen? Superstition was one of Echo’s favorite knowledge. Raven was my name before I started using my nickname… didn’t my parents say they named me that because a raven came to the nest? It was the same raven wasn’t it? And it came back… just like an echo…

Chapter One - Part Two

What did this mean? Echo stood up and tried to look at the vanishing bird, but it was gone, far out of her sight. Am I destined to leave? Why? She stepped out of her den, peered up at the twinkling stars. Involuntarily Echo scanned the night sky, looking for familiar constellations. There’s Sagitta the Centaur… and Tide the Maren to her right… Wait, what’s that? Echo flapped in wings, trying to get closer to the stars that tied together the Universe. A single, shining star lit upon the tip of Sagitta’s arrow. I’ve never seen that before. Craning her neck, and trying to get a good viewpoint, Echo realized too late that she was off-balance, and higher than she had ever flown before. The cave that she had nested in was a little more than a mere prick on the flower-strewn ground, and as she tried to adjust her weight, a powerful gust of wind sent her tumbling through her sky. Echo frantically tried to adjust and willed herself not to scream, but now the ground was spinning closer and closer.
