Mack's memories of Riley on the plane. I didn't cry, but this one always gets me.
Riley had been her best friend since they were born. They were never apart; if you saw Mack, then you saw Riley right by her side. Some people thought they were twins, brother and sister, because of how they acted. But they didn't look alike at all: Mack was tall, with incredibly short blonde hair and light green eyes; Riley had been a bit shorter than Mack, with spiked red hair and his eyes were darker green.
She could picture him in perfect clarity; the lopsided smile, joyful laugh. They'd never been romantic in any way. They had loved each other like siblings, and now she was left broken hearted by the man she'd considered her brother.
Riley Donovan was dead. Riley Donovan was dead.
The bomb had killed him instead of her. She was wounded, yes, that was why she was being sent home. Riley was being sent home too. But he'd never open his eyes again, or laugh, or even cry. He was being sent home, but not in the way he should've been.
Mack now had PTSD, a shoulder that might become paralyzed, and recently had emergency surgery on her leg and shoulder because of shrapnel. She was better off than Riley, some said. She didn't believe that. She would have to bury her best friend and brother, and had absolutely no one. What was life if you were alone?
Whelp geez, thanks so much Moriarty for now making me cry. Made me think of my cousin. But, it was beautifully written!! <3
