Fun Ghoul was excited. He couldn't wait for the summer solstice! Longest day and shortest night! The chestnut snorted happily and tossed his head. It was his favourite time of the year as it became, officially, summer. Fun Ghoul loved this because the barn usually held a party, like a celebration of the solstice. Fun Ghoul hadn't been at The Twilight Circus Equestrian Centre for long but he had heard excited murmurings about the party. Pete was going to officiate it.
This'll be interesting. Fun Ghoul though as he poked his head over his stable and looked over to the young black stallion who returned his gaze with a cheeky glint in his eye.
Well, it's going to be lively. Knowing Pete had something planned for him! Fun Ghoul looked over to the horse next to him, a young palomino tobiano stallion, named Patrick. Patrick was Pete's mate, he had been told. The chestnut nickered to Patrick to get the young horse's attention. Ears flicked as they registered the sound. The friendly stallion walked over to see Fun Ghoul properly.
"Hey." He said, his blue eyes shining. The palomino and white was so cheerful but Fun Ghoul felt sorry for him. Patrick's white patches were a rare type of white called dominant white. This meant he had pink skin underneath, so the poor beast had to wear a thin rug 24/7, Fun Ghoul knew this because of their conversation yesterday.
"Hi," Fun Ghoul replied, pricking his ears cheerfully "Is it true that we have a party for summer solstice?"
"Yes! And winter solstice too!" Patrick replied excitedly. Fun Ghoul snorted in anticipation.
"Sounds great!"
"Every year, Rebel picks someone from the herd to officiate the party and organise it! This year she chose my Pete!" Patrick neighed.
"So are you excited for this one?!" Fun Ghoul said getting excited.
"Of course, it will be amazing. This will be the most exciting one, you know what Pete is like!"
"I've heard many stories about this guy's tricks." Fun Ghoul said while chuckling to himself.
"Yes." Patrick said quietly looking down.
"Hey, are you alright?" The chestnut asked softly, his gold eyes scanning the stallion.
"Yeah, it just, sometimes his tricks get out of hand and I don't want him getting hurt or in trouble."
"Im sure he will be fine, he is tough." Fun Ghoul said to Patrick. The palomino looked up at him and smiled.
"Hey, we will be going out in the field soon!" Fun Ghoul said whilst he half reared against his door excitedly. Patrick nodded as the man walked into the yard and started to put headcollars on the horses.
Fun Ghoul was grazing with Patrick, Frankie and Drummer, two other sweet and playful stallion that Fun Ghoul had became friendly when Drummer suddenly said
"Are you guys excited for this party?" The three other stallions looked up.
"You bet, I am!" said Frankie, a buckskin appaloosa colt.
"It's going to be lively this year!" snorted Drummer.
"From what, I've heard!" Fun Ghoul replied.
"Pete won't let us down." Patrick said, practically glowing with pride. The quartet looked around for the handsome black but there was no sign of him.
"I haven't seen him in a while.." Patrick stated anxiously. Fun Ghoul knew Patrick had anxiety and was very dependant on Pete.
"he's planning something big," Drummer said "If I know that horse, then it will be the biggest it has ever been." Fun Ghoul was practically trembling with excitement. Frankie agreed with Drummer. Then as Fun Ghoul looked over to the forest, where the solstice party was to be held, he saw glowing gold eyes and a ebony shadow with a large sack dragging behind him, which was clutched in his mouth.
"It's Pete!" Fun Ghoul nickered. Pete heard him, his golden eyes grew large as he glared at Fun Ghoul and then he quickly hurried off. Drum, Frankie and Patrick all looked over just to see the parting flick of the black tail. Patrick ears pricked at the sight of the tail and then returned to normal as it disappeared.
"He was dragging a large sack." Fun Ghoul stated.
"Oh God..." Frankie said shaking his handsome buckskin head. Drummer didn't even look surprised. The sun shone on the backs of the four stallions as they lazily swatted the flies away as they looked over to where their herd mate had been.
"C'mon guys, lets leave Pete be." Fun Ghoul said, grinning at the other stallions as they all turned around and went to graze with the main herd of the stallions. That night Fun Ghoul barely got any sleep. About 1 'o' clock, the handsome stallion, Pete. quietly clopped in. Patrick's eyes shot open as he recognised the familiar smell of his mate. Fun Ghoul watched as the black walked over to the palomino with his golden eyes shining with happiness. Pete licked Patrick's cheek, muttered something to him and then headed off to his own stable. Fun Ghoul thought it was sweet. He wanted to sleep like the others but he was too excited for the next day's celebrations. About 4 'o' clock the small chestnut finally dozed off. Little did he know that Pete had headed back out again.
"Look alive, sunshine!" came a familiar voice. Fun Ghoul's eyes shot open to see Drummer giving him an evil grin from over the aisle. "It's solstice day!" The wild bay appaloosa stallion did a little piaffe at his door in excitement. Fun Ghoul nickered to him excitedly. The whole barn livened up as the first few bars of sunlight poured into the large barn. Soon the barn was alive with loud neighing and muttering from the horses. Today would be different. Today the horses were a lot more loud, upbeat and energetic.
Today was solstice day!The horses eagerly kicked the door as some young humans came in a threw into their stables the horses' breakfast hard feed. That silenced the horses for twenty minutes but after a good meal, the horses were lively and hearty again! Fun Ghoul noticed a distinct silence from the next stable. Patrick's stable. He was quivering in the back of his stable and sweat was forming on his withers.
"What's up?" Fun Ghoul asked confused. The stallion looked up at him.
"He's gone again." In that instant Fun Ghoul knew who Patrick meant.
"B-but I heard him come in, I saw him come in?" Fun Ghoul said. If a horse could furrow it's brow, Fun Ghoul would have. "He s-said to m-me that he h-had caused something really big, l-like b-ba-bad." Patrick spluttered out. "I told him t-to leave it and get some sleep... he nodded and went to his stable. Why would he lie?" Fun Ghoul shrugged. He was concerned about the younger stallion and his missing mate.
"He'll turn up... I promise." Fun Ghoul faltered at the last few words. He couldn't promise something that he could not control or that he wasn't sure of the outcome. Patrick looked at him sympathetically, he knew Fun Ghoul had just said that to make him feel better. The chestnut stallion sighed as he snaked his head back into his own stable. He thought about the palomino and the black. He wondered what had happened.
Excitement unfolded in the field later on that day. The horses stood in their cliques neighing excitedly to each other. The four lads, Patrick, Drummer, Fun Ghoul and Frankie stood alone together
"So, you're saying Pete has got himself into trouble again?" Drum questioned Patrick after he had told them the events of the night.
"I'm sure nothing too bad has happened, after all he was just planning a party!" Frankie said jokingly. Fun Ghoul shot him an angry look. Frankie's laughing stopped abruptly. Patrick glared at him. The four horses stood in silence wondering what had happened to their herdmate. Later that night, all 35 of the horses gathered outside, where a large chimera stallion ,which Fun Ghoul had never seen before, stood beside Rebel. The seal bay and red dun chimera cleared his throat, he was quite a young stallion too but obviously, he had great authority.
"Tonight, we will celebrate the coming of the summer hosted by the troublemaker, Peter!" said the chimera stallion.
"Tonight, Peter has chosen has chosen to host the celebration in the forest." said Rebel, stepping up beside the chimera. There came loud whoops from the crowd. Then, Rebel turned and led the herd into the woods.
"His name is Raven." Frankie whispered to Fun Ghoul. Fun Ghoul nodded and looked at the chimera known as Raven. After a few minutes of trekking, the herd came to a huge clearing in the middle of the woods. The stars illuminated the sky and gasps were audible from the herd as they looked at the beautiful night sky.
"He may be an idiot, but he sure knows what beauty is!" came a whisper from a palomino mare with unique markings.
Fun Ghoul felt someone slide by him, he looked over to see Patrick.
"Where is he?" He whispered to Fun Ghoul, his soulful blue eyes bore into his heart.
"He's probably tweaking a few things!" Then Fun Ghoul noticed some huge speakers, he was confused. How had Pete got them?
"The owners help out with the celebrations you know!" said Drummer practically reading his mind. Fun Ghoul NoddedSuddenly, some hidden lights illuminated the sky. Purples, greens and blues. Excited mutters buzzed around. Then, the speakers came to life with some rock music. All the horses knew Pete liked rock music so they weren't spooked when it came on as they were used to it. One song came on and it fitted Patrick's mood perfectly. The first lyrics were 'where is your boy tonight?' when Patrick heard them his ears flicked and he looked at Fun Ghoul who shrugged. Then the horses noticed some food had been laid out at one side and the owners were attending to it. The horse split up into their groups. Drummer said to Patrick
"He's fine, have yourself a good time and stop worrying!" Patrick nodded. The worry left his eyes as he tried to have fun with the others. This lasted through the night and Pete still hadn't made an appearance. Nobody except Drum, Frank, Ghoul and Patrick had noticed though. Suddenly, the music was turned down as the horses turned to watch the sun rise. They all huddled together and the owner put their arm around one of the mares. The purple, green and blue lights shut off. The music shut off. Then, the sun made a clear shadow of something in the clearing. A lone horse. Gasps of shock as they looked at this eerie shadow. Suddenly, a loud neigh was heard.
"My name is Pete and I am your host for the summer solstice party 2015!"
Everyone saw the glowing gold eyes before the horse. Patrick couldn't believe it. The black horse stepped out of the shadow. He was sweaty, out of breath and blood dripped down his side. He heaved and then collapsed. "Hey Pete, what happened?" said a chestnut that Pete didn't know the name of.
"Oh, Im Fun Ghoul by the way." Fun Ghoul shook his mane. The poor stallion had been in the vets for three days having to undergo various operations after a punctured lung, a broken rib and severe wounds. Pete sighed weakly and then grinned.
"Well, story time guys." He croaked. Drummer called Patrick over, who hadn't noticed Pete had returned, and Frankie. Patrick galloped over and inspected his mate. He licked his face and stayed quiet to listen to the injured horse's story.
"Well, after I greeted Patrick that night, I went back to my stable and I overheard Uma and Shirley gossiping about me, they said id never pull the party off and i'd ruin it. So, I couldn't leave it at that, I had to show them, you know me," he grinned weakly, then continued. "So I went back out a few hours later, then I realised my mistake. The first time during the day I was out, I ran into wolves. I had disturbed them and they threatened me. If I came back out they said they'd attack me. I was scared, I didn't want any of the horses getting eaten. But anyway, when I heard Uma and Shirley gossiping about me, they new I had been confronted by the wolves and they said that they wished i'd get attacked. I went back out there, set the party up and I was coming over at Raven's speech when the wolves found me. They attacked me and I lost my sense of bearings, I got lost looking for the party. Then I heard the music and I followed it..." the black stallion groaned and then laid down on his side. Patrick rushed over and licked his neck.
"Im alright, just tired." The black stallion said his eyes fluttering a bit. "I just want to sleep." Patrick, Fun Ghoul, Drummer and Frankie left Pete to sleep it off. They joined the horses in the field and they were discussing on how well the party went and how it was really good and the best one ever. Fun Ghoul smiled and looked over to Patrick who was receiving congratulations for Pete. He was beaming with pride.
