Cole and Orion walked down the dirty, dimly lit roads, the few streetlights illuminating their features. The girl's fists were clenched and her eyes were determined, probably resisting the urge to go back and beg for forgiveness. A gebtle rain was falling, more of a drizzle, pooling beside the sidewalk where the drains couldn't reach. Miles away, the moon shone brightly, not having anything to worry about.
"Here." Orion's cold voice split the cold air. She was punting down a dark alley that reached into the night, ending in velvety darkness. Cole nodded and followed after her, switching on the beam on his wrist light. A scares cat hissed at them and dove into a trash can, and far away, the mournful howl of a dog pierced the atmosphere. Its like a horror movie, thought Cole, shivering as a raindrop penetrated his oversized jacket. The two had grabbed fallen coats from fleeing observers, using the dark material to slip silently through the night.
"Cold?" Asked Cole, watching Orion wrap her arms around herself.
"N-no," she said, the tremble in her voice giving her away. He pulled off his dark hoodie and wrapped it around her, feet splashing in puddles of muddy water. For once, she didn't resist, instead walked closer to the dark-haired boy. He held up one hand, transforming it into a small fire. They couldn't risk giving themselves away, but he could at least warm them.
"Turn it off," said Orion in barely a whisper. "You'll attract attention. You can have your jacket back if you're cold." Cole shook his head.
"I'm more concerned about you, you've been shivering for ages." The two neared the back of the alley, which led to a dead end. It didn't register that they could easily be trapped, instead Cole pulled over a cardboard box. He managed his trademark smile.
"Welcome to the five-star hotel," he said, opening the flap of the large cube. Orion smiled and curled up at the back of it. The rain drummed on the roof, a few drops leaking in from cracks. Cole crouched down in front of her.
"Orion, I'm going to go get some food. Stay here, and if anyone comes that we should be worried about, shoot me a signal. If I see it, I'll reply with my own. Ok?" Orion nodded, eyes closing, wet lashes brushing her cheeks. Bright blue eyes penetrated the darkness as Cole began walking out of the alley, shivering with cold. He walked in and out of the pools of light, appearing and disappearing like some sort of angel. Head down and feet shuffling, he made his way to a dimly lit shop, loud music leaking out the rustic door. It didn't exactly seem like a friendly place, but he was determined to bring back food and maybe warm up. The door closed behind him with a loud jangle as he slipped, unnoticed, to the counter.
"Excuse me." His soft yet menacing voice caused a hush to fall over the crowd, busy with their loud chatting littered with obscenities. A waitress approached him, fluttering her eyelashes, adorned with too much mascara.
"Hey, gorgeous," she crooned. "Can I help you?" He smiled, making the waitress edge back, a flicker of uncertainty in her green eyes.
"I'm not interested in a date with a girl who'll leave me for someone else," he said clearly. "But I'd like some warm food." The girl flicked her red tresses, flirty demeanor gone.
"Right away." She disappeared into a room at the back and returned, carrying a paper bag smelling faintly of hot dogs. Cole payed the little money he had and edged out the door, racing back the way he'd come.
