Prologue

A young man, maybe 18, ducked behind a hedge, shadowed by the night. Tree branches rustled softly, drowning out the almost-silent padding of his feet as he crept towards the power station, where the towns electricity was generated. Not exactly a town, Arteméa was a very large city, to be honest. Black hair waving gently, he crept up to the fenced off place, clambering over it with ease. He hesitated, then pulled off his black glove, revealing a startlingly pale hand. He lifted a finger, a tiny flame dancing on the end. Grinning, he whispered to the flame soothingly, watching in glee as it expanded into a large ball of flame, engulfing his hand.

A siren disrupted the show. Lights on and sirens blaring, five police cruisers pulled up to the scene.

"Put your hands where you can see them!" The leader shouted into a microphone. "We will shoot!" The boy grinned in a way that would make one expect vampire fangs to sprout from his gums. He stood up on the roof of the power station, the moon illuminating his pale features. He held out both his hands, engulfed in flame. The cops glanced at each other in worry as the flames grew to a dazzling intensity, lighting up the whole city. Or a good portion of it, at least. With that, the boy slammed his blazing fists against the roof. People screamed and cops ducked for cover as the entire thing exploded, sending sparks flying.

"Get down! Retreat!" The cops fled in terror, as did the people who were watching. The power station continued to burn. I'm unison, the entire city's lights flickered once, then every street lamp, roof light, and flashlight went out. Grinning, the boy used the cover of darkness to run to safety.

Prologue (cont.)

A young girl stood in a shadow, leaning against the wall. Casually she sharpened a knife, the scraping noises echoing the vast chamber.

"Why did you want me, sir?" She asked, comment dripping with sarcasm. The middle-aged man ignored her rudeness and interlaced his fingers, leaning forwards.

"A new villain is threatening the safety of Artemèa," he explained, sitting in his high-backed chair. The girl rolled her brown eyes.

"You know it's nothing I can't handle," she said, tossing her knife into the air and catching it by the blade. The man sighed and placed his elbows on the desk.

"Probably so, Orion. But I still would like you to have some backup." She knew where this was going. She shook her head, black hair tossing.

"I'm not taking Alex," she snapped. "Give me Mia or Shane." The man sighed.

"Orion, Mia and Shane don't need training. Alex does. You're going to take him, ok?" The girl, Orion, signed but stood up.

"Orion? Don't fail me." She grinned.

"Don't worry. I won't."

Cole lay in the shadows of his cave, head resting on his 'pillow.' The hard, jagged rock wasn't exactly comfortable, but, hey, if you were going to live the life of a super villain, you had to be tough. He closed his eyes, the flames from earlier dancing in his vision. That had been fun. Arteméa was without electricity, which gave him an advantage. No electricity meant their searching for him would be delayed, however. What was the fun of being a villain if people weren't around to scare? Oh well, he'd live.

"Hey! Hands, now!" Cole sat up, squinting as light from an intensely bright something fell into his eyes. How did they have power so fast? And more importantly, how had they found him? The beam clicked off. A young girl walked into the cave, followed by a shrimpy boy with a shock of red hair. Cole clambered to his feet, glaring at the two.

"Hands up! Now!" Ordered the girl, gesturing with a small dagger. Cole rolled his eyes. The girl had short, feathery black hair with the tips died bright red. She was wearing... Interesting clothes to say the least. Black pants, black jacket, and some sort of black and red armour over her top. The boy was dressed almost exactly the same, only his was black and blue.

"Orion... Careful.." He warned. Cole snorted.

"Orion? Who calls their kid Orion?" The girl glared at him and flicked her knife. Before he could move, the blade sunk deep into the wall. Not pausing to wonder how a simple knife could go into a rock wall, he bolted for the entrance. With a lightning fast movement, a shadowy tendril wrapped around his leg, tripping him. Shocked, Cole lay on the ground for a moment. He always thought only he had powers... But clearly the girl did, maybe the boy as well. Which made them dangerous. He scrambled to his feet, barely getting anywhere before a similar shadow plunged into the wall in front of him, sending rock chips flying. Like a snake, it reared up and dove towards him. Cole barely managed to roll out of the way before a watery chain of barbed wire curled around his waist.

"Good job, Alex!" Cole lay on the ground, the crystal-blue barbs digging into his skin. The boy snapped his fingers and the barbed wire fell to the ground like rain. Cole clambered to his feet only to be pushed back by a shadow which he guessed was generated by the girl, Orion. The black, whispy material settled in strands over his chest, pinning him down and covering everything except his head. Grunting, Cole struggled to lift his hand, shooting a bolt of flame at the shadows pinning him down. They separated, then rejoined, swarming over his body.

"No!" Cole twisted furiously, attempting to free himself. Orion leaned over him, eyes flashing.

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way," she warned. "I'll free your hands if you agree to let us handcuff you." Cole glared at her defiantly.

"Never!" He rasped, eyes shooting darts. Orion smirked.

"Fine. Hard way it is." Cole barely had time to protest before a bolt of shadow slammed into his head, and consciousness left.

Chap 2

Postby WolvesOfFire » Sat May 02, 2015 11:11 am

Cole woke to a searing pain in his head. He cracked open his eyes, then instantly regretted it as bright light flooded into his brain. Rubbing his head, he pushed himself up. His arms gave way, and he flopped back into something soft. Soft? Where was he? All other thoughts vanishing, he forced himself up and gazed around his surroundings. A medium sized room, white walls, a large open window, and, of all things, a bed, which he was on. He pulled off the blanket that had carelessly been thrown over him and got to his feet, head throbbing.

"Hello?" He asked, wobbling on unsteady legs. A scraping sound from the far corner interrupted him.

"I thought maybe we killed you," came a cool voice. "It's about time you woke up." Cole glared at the girl, sharpening her knife. Orion.

"What did you do?" He snapped. She rolled her eyes and got to her feet, sticking her knife into a sheath around her waist.

"I knocked you out, duh," she retorted. Cole growled slightly. She raised an eyebrow.

"Don't go rabid mutt on me, kid. I could take you down in a heartbeat." Cole snorted.

"I doubt it. I could take you on." He hesitated. "Don't call me kid, I'm probably older than you." She snickered.

"Trust me, I know everything about you. However, I'm in charge, so I'll call you whatever I want, kid." She said. He glared at her and blew a lock of black hair out of his eyes.

"So explain yourself."

"What?"

"Fine. I'll wait until Shae comes to question you." Cole opened his mouth.

"Shae? Is she your leader?" She grinned at his words.

"Shae's a guy, dummy." A commotion from outside distracted them both. The door rattled, then a boy with messy brown hair jumped in, wearing, yup, the same outfit as Orion and Alex, only red. He grabbed Cole's hand and gave it an energetic shake.

"I'm the leader! This guy, right here!" He pointed to himself. Cole glared at him and clenched the fist he'd shaken, wishing he could punch him. Chances were, however, he had powers too. Orion rolled her eyes and gave the boy in red a hard shove, throwing him against the wall.

"You're not the leader, Shane, y-"

"I'm the leader." Cole spun around to see a man in his late thirties walk through the door, closing it firmly behind him. He found it impossible to look into his blazing grey eyes, instead focused on his shoes.

"Cole, right?" He asked. Cole finally looked up.

"Yeah. Why does it matter?" He asked hotly.

"Not seeming to notice his rudeness, the man- Shae- smiled slightly.

"Quite the villain, eh? Over thirty crimes in half a year. Powers too." Cole glared at him and rubbed his wrists, where it was evident he's worn handcuffs.

"I've got powers. Maybe I should show you them, using your face." He retorted. Shae's gaze hardened.

"I recommend respecting me, Cole," he said, turning to leave.

Cole paced the room he was in, wishing he knew how to get out. Not even his fire could penetrate these walls. Of course, there was the window. Why hasn't he noticed that before? He walked over to the window and placed his hands on this sill. He shuddered. Far below, waves crashed and roiled. Anyone else would probably jump out and swim...but...

"Scared of water?" Heart beating, Cole whirled around to see Orion leaning against the wall. How on earth did she do that?

"No!" Snapped Cole, glaring at her. "Of course not!" She shrugged and smirked.

"Shae wants to see you. Now." She held out a pair of handcuffs. Cole rolled his eyes and said,

"You don't seriously expect me to willingly put my hands in those, do you?" Orion grinned. Before he could say another word, a shadow snaked out of her hand and plastered him to the wall. Within seconds, his hands were clipped in front of him. Defeated for the moment, Cole let himself be led down a winding hallway. It'd be good to know what their leader had to say, after all. Cole worked at memorizing the path they were following, but after seven turns, five stairways, and several drop offs where he had to jump down, he gave up. After a lot of walking, they neared a steep door. Orion turned to him, smirked slightly and held open the door for him.

"Ladies first." She said. Growling, Cole let loose a blast of flame, charring the wall beside her. Then he walked in and seated himself on the chair across from Shae, who was sitting at a wooden desk. He looked over his glasses. Behind him, Orion joined Alex, Shane, and a girl with wavy blonde hair and blue eyes.

"So. Cole." The man shuffled a stack of papers, then turned to a high-tech computer, typing something using the laser keyboard.

"Yeah? Hurry up, I don't have all day," snapped Cole. Shae ran a hand through his salt and pepper hair.

"Hear me out, before you go all snappy, ok?" He asked in exasperation. Cole rolled his blue eyes but remained quiet.

"Thank you. Recently, we've had reports of a new super villain. Doesn't do more damage than you, obviously, but he's still a threat to society." He pressed a button, projecting a holograph of a tall man into the air. Cole shrugged.

"Why should I care?" He asked. "On the other hand, why do you?" Shae smiled slightly, giving the holograph a spin.

"We fight villains, here. That's what our organization does. We found kids with powers, geared them up, and they fight." Cole fidgeted. He was a villain, after all.

"But," he continued. "I worry that this fellow is two dangerous for my gang." Cole knew where this was going, but didn't say anything.

"That's why I called you here. You have powers. Interested in joining us?" Cole jumped to his feet.

"Woah, whoah, old man. Let's think this through, ok? Maybe you've forgotten, I'm a villain, not a superhero. What if I agree then stab them all in the back when they need me most?" He crossed his arms. Shae grinned.

"Then I gaurantee you'll regret it. So what is it? Are you in or not? I'll give you time to think about it." He began to stand up.

"Wait!" Said Cole. He took a deep breath. "I'm in."

"Yeah, I don't see how dodgeball is going to make me a better 'superhero.'" Snapped Cole. He was with Orion, Mia,(the blonde one) Shane, and Alex in the gym for training. But dodgeball? Shae reached out and ruffled Cole's scruffy black hair. He flinched and duck away, but wanting to be touched. Creep.

"Just go with it," said Shae. "You'll see." Cole sighed and slouched to the far end of the gym.

"All right, let's train." He snapped. No sooner had he said the words than something whizzed past his ear, smashing with incredible force.

"Dude!" He turned to see Orion wielding another ball, a smirk evident on her pretty face.

"Ready at all times," she instructed. "Watch the ball closely, then move." She flicked her arm and sent the small sphere whirling towards him at lightning speed. Cole flinched to the side, but received a burst of pain. Rubbing his arm, he scowled at Orion.

"Throw me one," he commanded. Mia smiled.

"The suits are what gives us the power to throw so hard," she explained. "For now, just dodge." To ward off any complaints, she picked up a ball and tossed it at him at lightning speed. Cole ducked and instinctively held his hands out, setting them ablaze. The ball sizzled as it reached his hands and burnt to a small pile of scattered ashes on the ground. Grinning, Cole raised an overconfident eyebrow.

"Bring it." He smirked. Big mistake. At once, all four of them threw the balls they were holding.

"Ow! Ok, break!" Commanded Cole, flopping to the ground, breathing hard. Orion came and stood over him.

"Get up, lazy butt. In combat, if you get hit, you're dead, got that? And I seriously don't recommend egging them on, either." He groaned, but got to his feet.

"Fine, Your Majesty." He said. Then she punched him in the shoulder. Hard. Scowling, he clambered to his feet.

"All right, again. One at a time." Readying himself, he reignited his hands. By the end of training, he was covered in bruises, but had also stopped a few. Orion came over and punched him again.

"You just might be worth the training," she said, resulting in a punch from Cole. Hard.

It's really interesting. I like how they have powers, but they're simple, they aren't over-powered. I like Cole's personality... almost every book I read has a some kind of snarky character like that lol. Also, you don't have many grammar mistakes.

Thank you! I personally love Cole... If he was real he'd be my boyfriend. And I try my best not to make mistakes, but I'm on an iPod so I mess up quite a bit. Stay in touch, I update fairly often depending on my mood:P

Chap 5

Postby WolvesOfFire » Sun May 03, 2015 9:44 am

"Hurry up!" Snapped Orion, hands on her hips. "Do you want that armour or not?" Cole followed more slowly.

"Give me a break, I just got whacked by dodgeball flying at two hundred miles an hour," he grumbled. She rolled her eyes.

"Come on, I barely threw them!" Behind them, the other three exchanged glances. Shane spoke up first.

"Orion, hate to break it to you, but you threw those balls pretty hard. Give him a break." Mia tossed her blonde hair and jogged up to Cole.

"How do you feel?" She asked, concerned. Cole raised an eyebrow.

"Like I got hit by a maniac girl gone nuts." Orion glared at him and probably would have thrown a shadow at him if Mia hadn't intervened.

"So what basic colors would you like your armour to be?" She asked. Cole smirked.

"What armour? I don't need any, I could destroy you all without it." Orion snorted.

"You mean like how you destroyed us at dodgeball?" She asked sassily, narrowly dodging the bolt of flame Cole shot at her. Cole thought.

"Black... All black." He said. Alex grinned. The skinny, quiet kid rarely spoke, but he was ok. Orion grinned and gave him a thumbs up, only slightly sarcastic. Yeah, his favorite color was black, so what? Mia sighed in consent.

"I suppose you will be more stealthy," she admitted, pushing open a door. Inside was a large station of sorts, with dials, knobs, and a screen. Orion stepped up to it, blew back a lock of feathery black and red hair, and pressed a large button. Cole stepped back as a neon green holograph filled the room. She twisted a knob, and the image cleared up to reveal the chest, arm, and leg armour they all wore. Orion gave the holograph a spin, then tapped a button. A laser keyboard appeared in the air.

"Sweet tech," muttered Cole. Ignoring him, she pressed a button in the corner, revealing an array of colors. She reached out and tapped the black one, and the holograph armour turned the same velvety black.

"Create," said Shane in a clear voice. The screen blinked. Processing Data appeared across it.

"This might take a few moments," said Orion, tapping her leg impatiently. There was a loud buzz, and the holograph swirled like dense green clouds, then dissipated. In its place stood a holograph of a man his own age, shimmering slightly, wearing the armour.

"How do you do that?" Asked Cole. Everything in here was almost unbelievable, if it hadn't just happened. Instead of answering, Orion waved a hand, the holograph person disappeared and the armour falling to the floor. Cole picked it up and fingered the material. He was ready for another round of dodgeball.
