Rune hit the ground like dead weight, the sickening thud demanding the attention of the two girls.
Intense firelight continuing to surround them, Säde immediately rushed over and dropped to her knees beside him, brushing stray hair behind her ear with a shaking hand. "Rune?" She tried, her voice betraying far more fear than she'd intended. Moving with rigid motions, she jerked her hand forward and brushed his hair aside before pressing a hand to his face. The temperature of his skin was dropping at an alarming rate. "Eirian," she managed to squeak.
Without taking her eyes away, she could hear the reluctant footsteps of the brunette approach before plopping heavily down on the other side of the limp figure, remaining calm and distant though Säde could hear her breath shake. As Eirian sparked up the heat in her arms, Säde pressed her ear to Rune's chest, allowing a sigh of relief to escape her when she heard the faint beating of his heart. Closing her eyes, she turned her head and waited for the anxiety to release it's grip on her chest before sitting back up. "He's alive," she announced quietly, barely able to hold back a hysterical laugh.
"Greeaat," Eirian muttered sarcastically. "That's just the news I was hoping for."
To the pyro's surprise, Säde whipped her head up to glare at her. "You could at least pretend to care," she spat.
"Why should I?" Eirian countered with a hiss in her tone. "Is it not enough that I don't ditch your asses and let you freeze do death out here?!"
Säde only pressed her lips into a thin line and sighed. "I can't do this now," she decided, barely whispering the irritated words as she looked back down at Rune.
A bitter expression remained on Eirian's freckled face, but she said nothing more; only watched as the pale girl took Rune's hand in both of hers, her expression utterly crestfallen. Then, suddenly, she shot up, eyes wide as if she heard something, and indeed she did.
They are coming.
Unable to hear the warning herself, Eirian narrowed her eyes in befuddlement at Säde's sudden behavior. "What is it?" She asked flatly, though fear stirred in her chest.
Säde paused before taking a breath to answer, but was quickly cut off. "I-"
They are coming.
The second time sounded far more urgent and set Säde on edge. "Something's coming," she whispered, dimming the light around them as much as she dared, though she doubted it would make any difference.
"What do you mean-"
"Shh," Säde said breathlessly before turning her sights back down and gently pressing a hand to either side of Rune's face. "Rune," she whispered frantically, eyes searching the length of him for any sign of movement. "Rune, wake up," she hissed desperately. It was no use, however, and he remained perfectly still save for the shallow rise and fall of his chest.
Then, before another word could be spoken, a twig snapped and their two figures went rigid. Unable to bring themselves to move, they waited with crippling anticipation, but were only met with silence. Then, out of nowhere, their muscles seized, but this time it was not their doing.
Panic rose in the two of them as they found themselves unable to move, and Säde's light grew brighter against her will. Then, at the edge of the glow, figured began to show themselves- tall and lean with dark skin and hair adorned with anything from beads to feathers.
One particularly intimidating male halfblood eyed them with a cautious curiosity; his sights did not linger on Eirian long, quickly flickering to the boy on the ground and pausing at Säde. With a sudden movement he strode forward, using the decorated and carved spear in his hand as a walking stick. As he approached Säde, she rose to her feet at the command of a force other than her own, a squeak of surprise leaving her throat.
Even if she hadn't been under the grip of another mutant, Säde did not believe the fear that gripped her would allow her to move. As the halfblood drew closer, carelessly stepping over Rune's limp form before stopping uncomfortably close to the pale girl, leaning even closer to peer at her curiously. At such a close range, she could see the marks that riddled his skin, akin to knots in three bark. His ears were only moderately long and pointed, what seemed to be tiny spikes driven through some places. His eyes held no whites, but were a rather intimidating shade of dark red with a slit pupil that dilated as his eyes looked her up and down.
Then, with a sudden jerk, he straightened up as if taken aback by something unexpected. Meeting her now composed and steady gaze, they stared at each other a long while before he took a few steps back, eyeing her a moment longer before turning.
The second he did so, Säde's muscles fell slack and she heard Eirian off to the side make a similar gasp for breath. Chest heaving, she didn't make another move until she felt heat radiating beside her. Glancing over, she saw that Eirian had gotten to her feet, obviously ready to burn the forest to ashes.
"Eirian, don't," Säde warned in a low voice, catching the brunette off guard.
With a wide, irritated, and surprised glance, Eirian was about to make a sharp reply before a grunt ahead cut her off, both of them looking to the halfblood that had faced off with Säde. He only had to look at Säde for her to understand what he wanted and she put her light out. "What the hell are you-" Eirian began, but was cut off once more with the sound of every surrounding halfblood striking the earth with the base of their spears, causing a blue glow to illuminate the top of each.
Eirian was, surprisingly enough, at a loss for words before Säde called to her. "Help me with Rune," she asked quietly.
"What-" Eirian scoffed, "we aren't going to follow them," she insisted in disbelief.
"Yes, we are," Säde informed as the group of halfbloods began to shuffle away. "Now come help me," she repeated tautly.
Eirian hesitated, but ultimately ended up wandering over in obedience. Säde stopped her by holding up a hand then raised an eyebrow. With a groan and a roll of her eyes, Eirian completely put out the fire that lingered in her arms before each of them knelt to sling Rune's arms over their shoulders, his feet dragging lightly as they walked as a result of his taller height.
Without another word, they followed the eerie blue glow even deeper into the forest, hardly breathing for fear the sound would be too rattling. Things glinted in the glow that could not be seen by firelight, the blue spectrum of light revealing life in the forest. Footsteps raced beside them and tiny figured flung up into the trees, but the halfbloods never seemed to give anything a second thought.
At one point, long enough into the journey that the girls were beginning to struggle with Rune's weight, the group ahead of them stopped at the command of the leader, who merely rose a hand. And they simply waited.
It soon became overwhelmingly apparent why they had stopped when a deep groan rattled the trees and a green glow flickered to life. Eyes widening in sheer disbelief at what they were seeing, Eirian and Säde watched as a moose-like creature crossed their path, towering a good forty feet in the air. Though it's legs were long, it moved at a slow pace, allowing them to marvel as it swung it's head to avoid getting it's antlers, which emitted the green glow via swirls and dots, caught in the trees. A smaller one pranced aimlessly beside it- it's young, they assumed, though even the baby trumped them in height many times over.
Once they were able, the group began to move again as if nothing spectacular had just happened, casually continuing on their way. It seemed they had traveled hours before those at the head of the group began to disappear underground, into a tunnel unseen until one was as close as they could be.
"No way I'm going down there," Eirian whispered, coming to an abrupt halt.
"Just go," Säde murmured back. "Would you rather stay out here and risk the existence of some giant bird of prey?"
Growing increasingly nervous, Eirian snapped her mouth shut and the two of them descended into the tunnel, rushing to keep up with the glow before they were consumed in darkness.
"I thought we were supposed to be killing these guys," Eirian hissed as quietly as possible. "Why are we suddenly trusting them to take us to some desolate cave where we are greatly outnumbered?"
"Just... Trust me," Säde insisted. "Besides... They haven't killed us yet," she added with an air of hope that did nothing to settle Eirian's doubts.
Their conversation fell short as they were lead into a wide cavern, brightly lit with many shades of bioluminescent plants peeking from the dirt walls and bustling with halfblood bodies carrying on their normal routine. The two of them shrank back as their presence turned heads, most of the group they had arrived with disappearing into the throng of movement.
They were left with the leader of the group, who turned to face them. "You will come with me," he told Säde, his voice low and gruff.
"Wait- you can speak?!" Eirian asked impulsively, regretting her outburst when his eyes flew to her.
"You will go with Sana," he instructed, twisting his torso to gesture to a female who stepped forward an offered a nod. He then gestured in the other direction where a much smaller, thinner male stood nervously, both of them looking to Rune. "He will go with Tyan."
"You mean separate us?" Eirian scoffed sarcastically. "Now that's just a grand idea- why don't we just carve ourselves up now?"
"Eirian," Säde snapped, a warning in her voice. "Do what he says."
Eirian looked at her in disbelief. "Fine," she spat, throwing her arms in the air and releasing her grip on Rune in the process, leaving Säde scrambling to catch him before he crumpled to the ground. The brunette then stalked forward so she was face to face with the unphased halfblood woman, gesturing to the network of tunnels before crossing her arms. "Lead the way, then." The woman obeyed, though her expression was ever so slightly irritated, taking Eirian along a crowded path.
Meanwhile, the scrawny male rushed forward and slipped his head under Rune's arm, freeing Säde of his burden with a reassuring glance and the attempt at a small smile. "I got him," he said with a nod, though still, she let go hesitantly.
"Come now," the leader said, glancing between the two of them before gesturing with his head for Säde to follow. "We have much to discuss."
